Yes i thought the exact same thing when i saw her. She looked so together, like she was really coming into her own at the time. It must of been devastating for her family 😞 i understand Owen is a Grandmom now and she tells her grandchildren about their great grandmother ❤
ShadowX011 three years before I was born, for me. I fully agree with you - I often drift into daydreams filled with sepia toned super-8 imaging, of what it must’ve been like living in the early 70s - and even in the late 60s.
She's a lot thinner here, but that's because she was starving herself. She damaged her health terribly crash dieting for years. It's part of what would kill her.
I definitely think she could have gotten to the level of Cher and Bette Midler, singers who transitioned to successful actresses who have won Oscars and Golden Globes. Cass had way too much charisma and talent for just the music industry. She was a true old-school all around entertainer. I like to picture her, with all due respect to Kathy Bates, as Molly Brown in "Titanic" alongside Leo and Kate.
Truth: She didn’t choke. The unfortunate story of Elliot’s cause of death was started by a careless coroner called to examine her. He saw a ham sandwich and a Coke on a table next to the bed where Elliot's body lay… and he jumped to a very quick conclusion, stating that Elliot, not displaying symptoms of any other sort of trauma, must have choked while eating and drinking lying down. The story jibed with the general impression of Mrs. Elliot as gluttonous, so it stuck. But that examiner missed one pretty crucial fact: the sandwich was untouched. The investigating police officer noted that in his report, and a full autopsy showed that the actual cause of Mrs.Elliot's death was a heart attack. She hadn't choked on anything. Now that you know the truth about Cass Elliot, we hope you'll spread it around. If there's one thing that's even more fun than repeating a nasty rumor, it's proving that rumor wrong.
Katia Schwarzkopf I recall I was about 10 that I heard the news that she had passed. I was told by my aunt that she'd choked on a ham sandwich b/c it was my fave sandwich too. I found out the truth when I got older. RIP...you left us way too soon. 😔😔😔 sing your song🎵🎶
I hate the rumor too, and actually, I've heard it's a rumor within a rumor about a half eaten sandwich being found next to her. Apparently that itself is untrue as well. I know for sure she didn't choke, and not 100% certain but reasonably so about the story of how the rumor came to be being fake as well. Oddly, the "Jerry Mathers killed in Vietnam" rumor also has a false story going around about how it came to be.

I have never seen this before, thank you for posting. Tragic that Cass died exactly two weeks after this show, and just a couple hours after her sellout show in London. There are so few truly great singers, maybe one per generation, and this lady was one of them. Rest in peace Mama.
Her younger sister and brother looked like her as well. Her sister became a singer too, her name Leah Kunkel. I heard her brother Joe passed away a few years ago.
Cass was indeed slimmer and felt pretty good about herself. Since she spent most of her life struggling with her weight and was always battling it, when she died so suddenly it was naturally assumed she was eating....the truth is larger people who lose weight quickly often have a strain on their heart. Hers gave out and in a moment she was gone. The music world has never been the same. I thought she was an inspiration to all people and set the bar for other vocalists. She will always be remembered as a rare talent whose voice far outreached just about every other woman of her time.
I was just 11 on 7/29/74 ( my parents wedding day in 1962) and I remember my hip' Mother was sad at Cass' passing,, she told me then as a boy " Mama Cass will never be forgotten!" She was right!
When I view this video...and see Cass Mom in the audience--I feel so sad of the unexpected and incredible heartbreak that her Mom would experience just two short weeks after this aired on tv.
interesting and really sad that the 2 greatest female voices of that era or for that matter in ALL of pop history karen carpenter and cass elliot both passed away at 32..
Both had heart attacks due to rapid changes in weight as ..In Karens case it was in conjunction with the anorexia and all the pills she was taking affected her heart ...not sure why Cass heart gave out..
Cass died from a excessive build up of fatty plaque in her heart and vascular system and thats what caused her heart to stop beating. It was probably a genetic condition, exacerbated by a high calorie/high fat/high cholesterol diet. My mom who was very weight conscious all her life and seldom ate anything fatty or high calorie, had a natural condition of too high Cholesterol and needed meds for it. These meds did not exist when Cass was alive and people never were checked for high Cholesterol in the 1970s. Karen Carpenter's heart gave out due to years of starvation, stress and drug/med use specifically laxatives and the prescription Thyroxine which is used to treat hypothyroidism. Karen was not a hypothryroid sufferer and used the drug to push her thyroid in order to stay morbidly thin. Her hearts electrical rhythm was damaged by its use and one morning she got up and collapsed trying to get dressed. Thats how and why they died and how they became legends who will be remembered for their incredible talents and not for the sad way they left us. ❤
Cass Elliot: one of the most incredible voices in rock music history. She had such an amazing voice...and she seemed very sweet. So sad that two weeks after this interview, she would be dead...especially sad when she said "I'll be 33 in September" now knowing that she would not live to see it. Cass Elliot, thank you for sharing your amazing vocal talent with the world. Your fans are forever grateful. You are still and will always be loved and missed. Great interview! Thanks so much for posting.
Such a treat to see a true beauty who brought joy through her music. Such a shame she died so young, I was only 6 years old at the time of her passing. Rodney Allen Ripley so cute as always. Thank you for the upload
When she passed out before hosting the 'Tonight Show', it's very likely it was due to what caused her death... Kind of eerie in a way to hear her talk about passing out and brushing it off as 'low blood sugar'.....
+Kenni Kuhlmann-Clark yessss, very chilling to see this knowing she's going to die. My inner child wanted to just yell out and warn her :( beautiful lady
That was the reason she gave to the press. I suspect though after 4 days in hospital, she may have not revealed the real reason she passed out. They would have tested her for diabetes and thoroughly checked everything else, at least they should have. Diabetes sounds plausible but more likely her obesity and drug use put her heart under too much strain. She played hard and paid the price. Very sad. I absolutely adored her, still do, still listen to her music. Her voice was amazing and so was she. A beautiful and kind person. There will never be another Mama Cass
@@CovidConQuitTheCensorship She starved herself for years trying to be thin. She damaged her health severely doing that, which she was at least partially aware of, even speaks of in a 1969 Esquire interview -- the dangers of losing weight thru so-called crash diets. But the pressure to be thin was too great and she continued to starve herself. I believe she knew that was why she passed out before the Carson appearance in 1974. Tho, yes, whatever she believed or was told it was, she was, according to her daughter, terrified of it hurting her career, and, of course, down played it to the press.
Cass was such a personable entertainer. She would always include the audience when she was being interviewed & her live shows looked like fun. Judging from what Cass said on her last Carson appearance, she really needed time off from touring. All of Cass' music is now on iTunes, thank u.
It's sad that her mother Bess (who we see in the audience as the proud mama) outlived her by 20 years. Her mom appeared to also be a big-boned and heavier set lady but unfortunately the past drug use, yo-yo dieting and the stress of showbiz and her career took a toll on Cass' heart. It was just too much to take which is sad because in the figurative sense she had the biggest, best heart of anyone on the planet then and since.
A celebrity that had intelligence and literally could talk about any topic, Politics, Sport you name it. Very down to earth and real. That's what people loved about her for sure. Huge loss to the industry and society gone too young.
@cindybin2001 so did EVERYONE in Mammas and Papas, and almost all acts during the 40s - 70s. Actors and musicians of all sorts were on barbiturates and other hard drugs, as well as alcohol. Almost any group or individual you can think of during this time period was on SOMETHING.
She was so young to die….. Gone way to soon !! She seemed as though she had a lot of confidence and comfortable in her own skin. This video was sad for me to watch knowing she had only two weeks to live. Such a shame !!
absolutely loved Cass Elliot, at 53 I grew up with her LPs my mum and dad bought. a great talent, a fantastic singer. sadly missed and went way way way to soon x
Rodney was really a distraction. The powers that be should have removed him from the segment. Cass is so intelligent and interesting and having Rodney there really took away from the moment, but she handled it like the pro she is.
@@PAULLONDEN He came across a very typical kid. Nothing wrong w/ having a kid on stage. I've seen enough adults on a set who can't stand to not have the attention on them too.
I never saw Ms. Cass Elliot back then on TV. Very likeable person. Seems very outspoken too. Unlike some people today who seem to be yes yes yes answerers.
Having symptoms and dying 2 weeks before this interview. She was so happy and so hilarious I would of loved to seen her grow up. Poor thing and family.
R I P Cass Elliot we are still singing and enjoying your music into 2016 I will Dream a Little Dream of YOU tonight :) As a kid I just adored her free spirited, easy going, liberated personality. She was bigger than life. I think her heart was so over filled with love for people and joy from music that her heart couldn't take anymore Shortly before her death, Ms. Elliot had talked to her friend Michelle Phillips from the music group and told her that she was getting standing ovations from her British fans at The London Palladium where she was performing solo. She struggled so very much to make a solo career for herself and to separate herself from the music group. She did not want to be called Mama and even had a song or monologue called Dont Call Me Mama Anymore NOTE: Mama was slang for the female companion, usually wife or girlfriend of a male biker and Papa was the name of the biker boyfriend or husband to the woman that would sit behind him on a motorcycle. It took years n years to clear up that terrible Hollywood misunderstanding about how she died. Cass' only daughter Owen Elliot Kugell resembles her and made a guest appearance in the music group of Michelle William's daughter where they sang some songs that Cass had sung Owen's singing voice is a bit deeper than that of her mother's Checkout a great rare rare song that Cass sang in a children's movie called "Different" the song was so popular for kids and teens that she recorded it on one of her solo albums The song spoke to the many unloved, outcast kids, teenagers, gay closeted teens as well of the time. The song is posted on youtube under "Cass Elliot + Different + Lyrics" Cass's singing is also featured throughout a British teen coming of age movie called: Beautiful Thing
Liberated, progressive personified by the cool, articulate and engaging Cass Eliot. A modern-type of gal is what she stood for, and remains a haunting, singular figure and life force..... Q: has john waters acknowledged that Cass is the inspiration for Hairspray yet ??
So wise for 32 years old. She knew herself so well and most people leave this world not knowing what they want or much about their true selves, really. Smart, beautiful, talented, and one of a kind, she was.
What an amazing charismatic talented funny and beautiful person was she. Passed alway far to early...😢 Powerfull voice, in the group The Mama's and papa's and also solo !!! R.I.P. Cass
Cass Elliot was truly a woman ahead of her time. She was warm, funny, caring, loving and incredibly talented. I identify with her a lot. I am just very grateful that we had her for as long as we did. No doubt, she is up in Heaven spreading her love, joy, and music around, with Denny and her buddies! Thank-you Cass, for the beautiful memories. We Love You.
If she was around today she would be classified as a big beautiful woman. She was funny, smart and she could blow anyone off the stage with that big beautiful voice of her's.
@@kurziieee Well, that's your opinion! Lots of women AND men are OBESE, as society terms it, and lots of others find them HOT and drop-dead gorgeous. And lots of thin people drop dead young to old- from heart ailments too. A co-worker of mine just had a heart attack at 28 and he's thin, and fit! Being thin is no guarantee of a healthy heart. So, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Paul Rubens, who was considered one of the greatest painters of his age painted "fleshy" or fat women who he believed to be OMG gorgeous and arousing to him sexually.
@@kurziieee According to what we know today, she actually died from yo-yo dieting which is chronic weight fluctuation over years of dieting to lose weight. Only God knows if she would have lived much longer if only she had been comfortable with herself, happy, and just accepted the fact that she was never going to be thin. It's been proven by science that's it's better to be steadily and constantly overweight, than it is to be consistently losing then gaining weight over time.
So if you want to know exactly how come Cass came to be such an amazing wonderful human being, clearly you just need to look at Mrs Cohen!!! I adored this so much. So sad it was so close to her death. She's just too alive to not be here, even now.
She looks thinner here! Rest In Peace Cass! I was only 18 months old when you passed but I love you and your angelic voice! I think she’s my favorite girl singer of all time and she was beautiful!!
I can see why so many people were drawn to her. She is so charming and personable. The term down to earth gets thrown around a lot but Cass Elliot truly seemed to be the definition of. I bet the autobiography she would have written would have been something, so would seeing and hearing her reaction to the times these days.
As one given appetite suppressants off-label as a pick me up and study aid by a family GP in late 80s Britain, I see Cass had lost an enormous amount of weight and once more media have concealed the facts about her untimely death. All but one of those meds have been withdrawn precisely due to congestive heart failure now. Ironically, the heavier, the greater risk such diet pills pose. Such a terrible loss. I've loved Cass Elliot since finding her Don't Call Me Mama Anymore LP in a bargain store
I only knew Cass Elliot through her music and occasional TV appearances (and memories from those who did know her) but she really seemed like an interesting person to know. Despite never truly knowing her, I miss her. Considering she had two failed marriages I can understand her not wanting to do it again and to live in a more open relationship, although she did have a young daughter at that time and if Cass had lived to raise her, I wonder how she would have felt about such relationships. I'll have to disagree with her mother wishing she was coming up in those times rather than the generation she was a part of - the cynic in me thinks she never would have settled down and had Cass in the first place!
Delighted to see that you've enjoyed the video, Patricia. Thanks for the lovely feedback. This is what this channel is all about. Cass rarities for her many fans. Hope to add more clips in the future.
great interview with cass.. to think she would pass 2 weeks later... earlier in may she was on the johhny casron show and had told about being in the hospital from fainting. she said she was ok but i wonder the hospital didnt find anything wrong with her then. maybe its was a warning? .so sad.. i miss her soooo much. thank you for your wonderful talents and sharing them with the world.
I wonder about that too. Then again back in 1974 we probably didn't have as good as medical equipment or tests to determine a heart issue as we have now. Medical technology has advanced somewhat I'm sure but heart disease is a freaky thing and even today you hear of perfectly/seemingly healthy people in their 30s and 40s keeling over dead from heart failure. I'm sure the doctors then told her to try to take it easy since passing out suddenly is always cause for alarm concerning one's health. It could mean anything from poor circulation to low blood sugar or pressure to major cardiac issues.
Hey Tom , I think Cass was dead 2 wks. later . We lost one of the greatest voices ever!!! I don't care about her dieting habits, as long as she was happy with and within herself. We lost one of the greatest singers ever... TOO BAD FOR US !!!!

Thank you for this Eran........I loved this lady.....what a talent......be at peace Cass.....and thank you!!.
Diet pills and a past history of drug use didn't help either. Plus, she was a smoker.
I was just 11 on 7/29/74 ( my parents wedding day in 1962) and I remember my hip' Mother was sad at Cass' passing,, she told me then as a boy " Mama Cass will never be forgotten!" She was right!
Yep! God bless her soul, she was wonderful...*
Yes hers and another who left us too soon, Karen Carpenter...who was also 32 when she passed from another health issue also connected to eatting. 😞
@todd canton Yes, years of starvation diets will severely damage the health of anybody, fat or thin. It likely contributed to Cass Elliot's death.
She seemed like such a gentle, loving soul.
My absolute favorite female singer. If I could have any singing voice I wanted, it would be Cass Elliott.
Man, she was fucking smart.

Florence Ballard of The Supremes also passed away at age 32.
Both had heart attacks due to rapid changes in weight as ..In Karens case it was in conjunction with the anorexia and all the pills she was taking affected her heart ...not sure why Cass heart gave out..
The irony is that one died thin, the other died a bit thick....not that it matters.
And food related issues were at the center of both deaths 😞
She had an amazing mother, hence the reason why Cass was such a beautiful, creative, and wonderful person.
What a lovely, charismatic woman.
Such a treat to see a true beauty who brought joy through her music. Such a shame she died so young, I was only 6 years old at the time of her passing. Rodney Allen Ripley so cute as always. Thank you for the upload
It made me tear up when she said about her birthday, and how long she'd been 'in the business'...she was a beauty gone too soon.
My thoughts exactly... such an incredible loss.
@@CovidConQuitTheCensorship I'm thinking diabetes too. RIP
She was a very talented lady who would have become an even bigger success had she lived. Very sad.
She was pretty big already
@@olsmellyknuckles9653 , she got it naturally from her mother
she may have been diabetic, when blood sugar goes dangerously low or high, that person can go into "DIABETIC COMA", and they do not pull out of it!!!!
Cass was such a personable entertainer. She would always include the audience when she was being interviewed & her live shows looked like fun. Judging from what Cass said on her last Carson appearance, she really needed time off from touring. All of Cass' music is now on iTunes, thank u.
much love form Poland, you will be never forgotten
It's sad that her mother Bess (who we see in the audience as the proud mama) outlived her by 20 years. Her mom appeared to also be a big-boned and heavier set lady but unfortunately the past drug use, yo-yo dieting and the stress of showbiz and her career took a toll on Cass' heart. It was just too much to take which is sad because in the figurative sense she had the biggest, best heart of anyone on the planet then and since.
Weight issues are often genetic, sadly.
Wow outlived her by 20 years huh? I didn't know that
A celebrity that had intelligence and literally could talk about any topic, Politics, Sport you name it. Very down to earth and real. That's what people loved about her for sure. Huge loss to the industry and society gone too young.
She was so cool, smart, fun, quick, engaging, talented, and interesting. I wish today's celebrities could take a cue from people like her...

Agreed 🎶
😎
I love Mama Cass! She was so spectacular, bright, brave, beautiful woman. I could listen to her speaking forever.
I like her. She was smart and interesting.
I hope she rests in peace.
She had talent, confidence, brains, ability to communicate with intelligence, and she was a comedienne too. "Only the good die young"
@cindybin2001 oh, yes they were. They were against drugs bc they had DONE lots of drugs and didn't like were it lead them.
@cindybin2001 no actually, it doesn't.
@cindybin2001 A lot of people used then (and before and after those times).
Cass Elliot was so bright and had such an open mind and perspective. RIP Sweetie.
What a great personality. Very smart, bright, intelligent.
Huxxy
Yes she was 🍻
She was so young to die…..
Cass is so intelligent and interesting and having Rodney there really took away from the moment, but she handled it like the pro she is.
star or not, anyone with any common sense would have taken him off the stage. He's still a 5-6 year old kid.
S P True.
The ‘70s was the era of idiot loudmouth kids on TV.
*@E Z* Yeah ...it seemed he was begging for attention .....came over as a somewhat spoiled kid. Wonder what he's up to these days .
After not before
Such a sweet, personable, lovely lady with a brilliant mind and voice. Sad for us all that she left this world so soon. 😕💜
One of my all time favourites from the 60's. She had an amazing voice and the songs are timeless.
I love the way you protect people's dignity. Especially Cass Elliot. I like your guidelines! I was too young to know why I loved her when I did LOL
R I P Cass Elliot we are still singing and enjoying your music into 2016
I will Dream a Little Dream of YOU tonight :)
As a kid I just adored her free spirited, easy going, liberated personality. She was bigger than life.
I think her heart was so over filled with love for people and joy from music that her heart couldn't take anymore
Shortly before her death, Ms. Elliot had talked to her friend Michelle Phillips from the music group and told her that she was getting standing ovations from her British fans at The London Palladium where she was performing solo. She struggled so very much to make a solo career for herself and to separate herself from the music group. She did not want to be called Mama and even had a song or monologue called Dont Call Me Mama Anymore
NOTE: Mama was slang for the female companion, usually wife or girlfriend of a male biker and Papa was the name of the biker boyfriend or husband to the woman that would sit behind him on a motorcycle.
It took years n years to clear up that terrible Hollywood misunderstanding about how she died.
Cass' only daughter Owen Elliot Kugell resembles her and made a guest appearance in the music group of Michelle William's daughter where they sang some songs that Cass had sung Owen's singing voice is a bit deeper than that of her mother's
Checkout a great rare rare song that Cass sang in a children's movie called "Different"
the song was so popular for kids and teens that she recorded it on one of her solo albums The song spoke to the many unloved, outcast kids, teenagers, gay closeted teens as well of the time. The song is posted on youtube under
"Cass Elliot + Different + Lyrics" Cass's singing is also featured throughout a British teen coming of age movie called: Beautiful Thing
What a beautiful soul!❤
Lizzett ♥️💐
I can still remember listening to her sweet voice on the radio when I was a kid.
She was such a uniquely strong and brave young woman.
Sly Stone and Cass Elliot - total 60's icons seated together.
I thought that was Sly , but wasn’t sure.
Funny how some icons seemed to get dead after hanging with Sly Stone.
@thomaslord7995 Dead icons were common in the late 60's and early 70's.
Liberated, progressive personified by the cool, articulate and engaging Cass Eliot. A modern-type of gal is what she stood for, and remains a haunting, singular figure and life force.....
Q: has john waters acknowledged that Cass is the inspiration for Hairspray yet ??
+DH Saunders Really?????? Cass was his inspiration for the musical HAIR Spray based on her bad school experiences?
So wise for 32 years old. She knew herself so well and most people leave this world not knowing what they want or much about their true selves, really. Smart, beautiful, talented, and one of a kind, she was.
What an amazing charismatic talented funny and beautiful person was she. Passed alway far to early...😢 Powerfull voice, in the group The Mama's and papa's and also solo !!! R.I.P. Cass
I love watching this interview! LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU Cass! I had some Tastykakes and a ham sammy for you today! Happy Birthday!
Cass, Mike Douglas, sigh...I'm 54 this November, and I miss this, yet I'm lucky to have been born in an era where I got to see it when it aired...
Cass and her mother are way ahead of their time. RIP to both of them lovely ladies❤💐🥀
Thanks for posting this
What a lovely lady, love her music, she was one of a kind 😍RIP mama
Cass Elliot was truly a woman ahead of her time. She was warm, funny, caring, loving and incredibly talented. I identify with her a lot. I am just very grateful that we had her for as long as we did. No doubt, she is up in Heaven spreading her love, joy, and music around, with Denny and her buddies! Thank-you Cass, for the beautiful memories. We Love You.
If she was around today she would be classified as a big beautiful woman. She was funny, smart and she could blow anyone off the stage with that big beautiful voice of her's.
Nothing beautiful about obesity, in fact it's what got her killed so young.
Cass...you're still an omg...I know you're in Gods choir..
@@notsocommonsense9100 She was morbidly obese and died because of it, just facts.
The great legend would not live to the end of that month. What a loss. What a tragedy. We miss you Cass.
Man she was so witty. 👌🏽😎
Such a beautiful lady in every way. RIP sweet lady.
She was a really great mama.
I've loved Cass Elliot since finding her Don't Call Me Mama Anymore LP in a bargain store
i've watched this so many times, i never get tired of listening to her talk
Great lady, great singer, so glad she gave us her voice and music, she will always be with us musically.
dead 2 weeks later...so alive here
Beautiful, bright, clever, funny, empathetic, ahead of her time. Love to you Cass
Poor poor kid. She was so damn funny and cool. Man.
I am now 56 and loved " Mama Cass " bless her soul , she died on July 29th, my parents wedding day, just 2 weeks after this ! We never know ?
Absolutely one of the most brilliant female singers of all time ..........my fav
Delighted to see that you've enjoyed the video, Patricia. Thanks for the lovely feedback. This is what this channel is all about. Cass rarities for her many fans. Hope to add more clips in the future.
She was ahead of her time! Such a legend...
My mom used to sing dream a little dream of me when I was little.

great interview with cass.. to think she would pass 2 weeks later... earlier in may she was on the johhny casron show and had told about being in the hospital from fainting. she said she was ok but i wonder the hospital didnt find anything wrong with her then. maybe its was a warning? .so sad.. i miss her soooo much. thank you for your wonderful talents and sharing them with the world.
🥀She was so wonderful and beautiful. I loved her for being herself that was a brilliant artist she had everything going for her but when I heard that she had died in the 70s it broke my heart. Thank you for sharing this video it's priceless and unbelievable🥀🕊🥀☝️
I would have loved to just hang out with her. She is genuine, she is who she is and makes no apologies.
Two weeks later , July 29, 1974, …..the world lost a great talent, a bright 🌟…….RIP Mama Cass ❤️
sad "I,ll be 33 in september" god bless, sadly cass never made it.
Love me some Mama Cass! Bless her Soul... This was just 2 weeks before she left us for her reward.
Wish Mike would have talked about her singing and music.
Wow. Thanks for sharing this interview.
I loved her singing voice: talented she was
I have heard of this, never seen it untill now. I do believe it is the last television interview she was in before passing away.
