I have owned a 4044m for several years now. My friends named it “The Green Turd” it fit very well and continues to keep that name. John Deere cut corners on this tractor and it shows. It is under powered for the size of the frame especially if you add rear ballast in the tires. High gear is pretty worthless, from a dead stop going up the slightest incline it throws a hydro alarm until it can catch back up. The support bar that connects the two sides of the loader is weak and a common area that breaks which makes hooking up front implements very hard. With hydro cooler it makes it almost impossible to clean the radiator. Now let’s move on to this tractor is LOUD making it hard to communicate with anyone on the ground. It also is HOT, the fan blows the hot air from the engine compartment right into the control station, not bad in the winter but miserable in the summer. At just under 200 hours it had a hydro hose start leaking and the dealer stated that is not uncommon because John Deere uses cheap materials in their hoses. Overall this tractor has been a huge disappointment and turned me completely agains ever owning another green on. It needs about 10 more horsepower to be an ok tractor. It also needs to be built like the past JD tractors that are still running farms today. I have owned this tractor going on 4 years so it’s downfalls are not something new to me. If I were able I would trade it tomorrow for a different color but Deere is the color of money and after getting hung out on this tractor I can’t afford to do anything but keep it. I hope this helps someone not make the same costly mistake I made.

Love my 4044m. So glad to see that JD has finally included the folding roll bar on this series. My M does not have this (1st year of the new 4 series) and it can be a pain. I had to install a custom door on my shed just to clear the bar.
Also, I recommend that any new prospective buyer budget for telescoping draft arms and side links. This makes implement hookup and adjustment SO much easier and faster.

I am 71 I bought a 2022 . 4044M , They make a 4044R it has a few options .The tractor is made in China ,Mexico ,?? I love the tractor right now the only issue I have is the key switch is in a bad place if you turn your body to the right to look behind your left knee can bump the key and cut it off not saying its a big deal but check it out .

I'd give almost anything to have this machine! I've got a to hell JD 870 at work that's just real tired! The 3pt quit and it was used for plowing and salting so she's real rotten, and the hydro lines are all rotten as well. The 4wd is inop and broke. This would solve all my problems at work

@@WesternEquipment The ol things had a hard life, she suffered from lack of maintenance and operator error before I got here lol but I do agree that it seems like a good fit! I'd love the front loader to supplement the backhoe for smaller jobs and to have a working 3pt hitch!
I have a 3032. The entire hood raises on the 3032 which makes radiator cleaning very very easy. I could see this tractor having a difficult to clean radiator.
And working on the battery in the 4044M must be a major pain without taking off the complete front clip.
If it were me I would pass on this Deere if I could find an easier to maintain vehicle.
I agree that it is somewhat cumbersome but the side remove very easily on the 4M which makes these two jobs easier.
in the manual it states it's 44 horsepower to 50 horsepower, the dealer said it was 50 horsepower..
Gross engine HP on the 4044M is actually just a touch below 44 HP @ 2600 RPM. That is straight from John Deere specs for this tractor.
I figured the key hold hood was to help keep people from opening the hood with the tractor running.
I would completely agree with you if the key was the only object that would open it, but it can be opened with pretty well anything that will fir in the hole.

My dad consider trade his 4200 to new 4series if they have mid mower…..

What would I need to do to get a hydraulic top link hooked up to one of these?
You would have to have a third function hydraulic added to the rear more than likely.
Since there is no def on my 4044m, then what does it mean when the dash indicator displays the word "DEF"

How difficult is it to remove the battery from the 4044M
nice tractor and cheap it up with cheap turnbuckle stabilizer arms.

@@WesternEquipment The M series tough built tractor, heavy duty, its ashame that vendors(not only John deere) will do similar things. Kubota by not putting a rubber floor mat, etc... John Deere with not a Skid Steer attachment for all models and also a non disconnect front end loader. It's hard mounted onto the tractor.
How often you change the oil and hydraulic fluid
When using John Deere oil and filters, they say you can go 400 hours on engine oil and filter and 800-1200 on hydraulic.
Yeah the front end attachments on the John deere they just wear out the whole thing just falls apart and you got to buy a whole new arms and pads for the tractor.
The tractor is four-wheel drive
There's no rear wheel lock for the rear axle so the front end four-wheel drive does all the work and if it goes out and feels like mine did you're stuck with the tractor it only has a one-wheel drive in the rear.
If you're going to get on the tractor and mope around on it and pick up hay barrels you're probably okay but if you're going to do any kind of work with it i would not go with the John deere compact tractor it just wears out too fast 1500 hrs
On a 2018 John Deere 4044m, is there a 3 point assist kit that can be added,(the 4044r normally has it)?

how will I the plastic fenders hold up in the cold? I had a tc45 which had plastic fenders that broke up easy?

For transport purposes, what open style trailer capacity and length would you recommend?
You would need at least and 18' with 2-3.5K axles, but I would recommend going with 5K axles just to be safe.

You would have to install a 3rd SCV kit.

You will either have to add a set to your mid valve stack or run hoses to the rear.
I was going to buy rear work lights but they wanted $338. Way too pricey seems to me!

can you install a baler on this tractor?? yes, I'm a rookie on this haha!! but we recently bought some acreage and my business buddy bought this nice tractor and now we need a baler...
You should be able to run an older small square baler with this tractor with no problems!

Yes, some do. But you can remove the iMatch and still have a standard 3-point hitch.
