- This is the Carisma M48S Colin McRae Subaru Rally Car, and out the box is was very slow for a Brushless RC Car. I've made it Way Faster! The combo will work in most 8th & 10th scale RC Cars, just check your motor shaft size and clearance. (3650 = 540 size, 3660 = 550 size)

Blowing up your existing motor or ESC,
(In order to upgrade)
*Is highly encouraged*
F550 motors are equivalent to a normal 3650 or 540 for internals. Like F540 motors are equivalent to a 380 sized motor. The F is for finned.

Back in the day (late '90s) I used to belt tyres myself. Turn them inside out and run a strip of duct tape around the inside of the tyre. Worked remarkably well to stop tyres ballooning. Fabric surgical tape also worked well.

I love how the rear squats under hard acceleration and the new motor and esc combo has accentuated that perfectly! Looks just like the real thing! Great videography as always 👍👍
I don’t think you can ever take it too far. For me, that’s what this hobby is all about. As far as rally cars, I think the HPI WRX FLUX, is the winner.
I mean, if the car can handle it then sure. But each car has its limits, this one seems to have its limits at 4500kv on 2S, _maybe_ 3S with better tires and driveshafts and a better setup.
This a very worthwhile video. It shows how you can easily and cheaply make a car faster and more fun. I think this will encourage people to upgrade their rc's. Great job.

😆 That's quite the speed upgrade.
You could lock the front diff. That would send most of the power to the front wheels, which would help keep it straight.

In theory a faster RC is better but speed is nothing without control. But it’s always FUN when you realize an RC is simply to fast for its own good 😮

I have 60 amp surpass esc in my tamiya tt02 rally car and it takes small stones in the fan constantly. Super annoying! I clued speaker grille cloth over the fan and it helps. Also took out fan screws, so i can clean it whitout tools. Positive is, my fan looks like it went through hell with missing blades and busted bearing, but still runs and does it job!

I'm curious on if you increased the pinion on the original setup how much speed you could get. seems to be a pretty small pinion for the stock KV rating.

I use the same on my drift car sakura d4 and d3 street car ... fast and holds up
I used an 80a on a 4500kv motor, and that was wild. You are mental for going 120a. In all fairness, it is larger than the RC I used.
tbh i think its perfect no reason to go full throttle but the power and acceleration of the bigger motor is perfect for those rally style driving
If I were to use a Rocket ESC with a non Rocket motor, would it make a difference or would I be just as well served to use plane jane Surpass ESC? Thanks.

Those "ribbed" F540 motors are actually smaller 28 mm diameter inside. It would go even better if you used a full size 540. That said, it doesn't lack in power, in fact, it seems like a sweet spot for the size of the car.

No experience with the esc's but the Rocket motors are great with a Hobbywing ESC.

I've never been a Subaru fan but that body style WRX has always been one of my favorite looking cars. That Colin McRae blue and gold still looks great. This is a dumb question but, are RC motors mounting holes standardized? Everything I have is RTR and haven't swapped motors.
Oh yeah, double the fun.. until you crash into something lol. I just got the Mini T back together and put a 4800kv motor in it. More docile and controllable, but I kinda miss the 6000kv insanity, but that's what breaks parts.

I did something similar to my Tamiya Alfa GTV.
It does wheelies now but is almost uncontrollable.
Can only go 75% throttle.
Phil, could you play with the throttle rates on 3s to make it more controllable?

Good video and not a surprising result. Would be curious how the stock motor would do with the better esc or the better motor with the stock esc. Just to see if it’s the entire stock combo or one of the parts.
I think the stock motor just didn't have the RPM it needed. 3300kv - 3500kv would probably be the sweet spot
Rolling and crashing just makes it feel more like a McRae Subaru. If in doubt, flat out! 😂

All you needed to do is, change the tires and springs to low profiles/short dampers and she would coast at high speeds.

May be they’ve improved but I’ve seen a few exploded or just pop easily
@mark-1rc502 most ESC fires are bad connections. I've never had smoke come out. Only units that abruptly fail. So I would suspect a dead short in units that burn. And I feel like that is the battery connection at the solder join. Most of the time.
The funny thing about surpass escs is that they are *comically huge* in a chintzy cheap kind of way. And the fan blows like a hurricane and a tornado having a disagreement. But they're cheap and work well for me so far.
I've got a few... never had one go up. My 1/7 ZD Racing has a 150A one... good for 70+ MPH on high capacity lipos and has done multiple runs.

HAHA That was awesome! Way to bring that rig to life. Carisma really dropped the ball on this rig. Terrible electronics and basic design all the way around. By the time you upgrade and buy the 3S battery you could have got the HPI WR8 or NEW CEN Ford Puma.
I was watching the Paddlesworth video today of their rally stage, the stock slow motor is designed exactly for that, narrow twisty rally stages but, like you I'd put a faster motor in too.

I run a Mamba Max (the realy old one) mit 5400kv in my Tamiya TB-03, but only on 2S. I think on 3S the fun would not be much more, but the problems will increase.
I put the same esc in my vendetta. I run it on 4s, and that's how it should have came. Never runs hot, and hauls @ss.
