I think my mechanic pulled one over on me. 07 4runner he said the differential was bad. I thought I heard howling, but wasn't sure it if was the AT tires or the rear dif. And… $4k later I have a new rear dif and I still hear howling. He claimed the howling was better but I feel it was the tires all along.
If the sound comes and goes at different speeds I would surmise that it was not the tires as if it were the tires the sound would be constant. Just my opinion.🤔
Mine is grinding and makes it sound kind of like an airplane taking off. I have a Chevy avalanche 2012. For some reason it mostly only does it as a turn left like slight turning left. Does that make any sense? My friend and I unfortunately already replaced the wheel bearing and the driver side half driveshaft. Neither one of the solve the problem. Help
My question is, is a used diff automatically suspect if you turn the input flange by hand, and hear it click once in each direction? This is a 2013 Durango front diff. Trying to determine if I should install it, or not. Thanks.
2003 Mercury - no leaks - changed the fluid - but still hums when making a right turn at low speeds - not left - just right- What is that??? My mechanic says - just change the fluid again- sometimes the first change may not do the trick. Anyone have any suggestions?
I only have 36000 miles on mine - and it doesn’t start to do it right away - but after driving a bit it starts doing it! Only on when turning right. Let me know if anyone has an answer!
@@gagevieu3254 May be just low and or old fluid I noticed my diff was making noises and just went and removed the diff cover and found that the fluid was low and dirty and found no metal pieces or shavings cleaned the inside and cleaned and replaced the diff cover with a new gasket and fluid and drove it 80 miles round trip and no issues. try that at first
My car is awd and spins anytime it rains I could go 5mph from a light with brand new tires and it spins out mechanic said it could be low fluid in my differential or my transfer case is this true
So my 2015 Camaro LT is having a funny clunky noise when I turn. If I turn left I can hear it on my left side, if I turn right I can hear it on my right side. What can it be?
Seems like EVERYONE has this same problem and I've been watching YT videos covering all the front end parts and still haven't found an answer by a video maker or in the comment section.
Just bought a diff from eBay , it has no oil he says he drains them all for shipping... My question is when I rotate the main shaft the 2 for the wheels turn but I am able to stop them just with my hands as the main is still rotating.... Wouldn't that mean the cars not going anywhere if it was installed? .. is this bad😮
I had a weird jerky feeling in my steering and I added some gear oil to the front differential. It helped it go away. I did it with the vehicle on the ground BTW even though it was a little bit tight to get under that way. I also added a bit of Liqui Moly MS02 additive and that may have helped too. Just make sure there are no clutches in the differential first before you do that part. It could cause them to slip if there are any. My vehicle is a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport SV with AWD (it is more like FWD most of the time really). Also don't use the MS02 if you have limited slip. MS02 is molybdenum disulfide and works as a lubricant. It can be in oil or it may be in some dry lube sprays even. I don't know who else makes a product like that additive but that product is the reason for the Liqui Moly name. It is really a German company known for making some of the best automotive products. They can be a little expensive but they work!
Well you can tell it's a differential is bad because the way that it is. It's just whenever they go bad they don't work properly anymore and no longer work correctly.😂

Me too did you figure it out? I also noticed if I give it a lot of gas from a dead stop the engine revs and nothing happens for a second until i hear and feel a grinding sound and start to move like some gears are catching all of the sudden. This is accompanying all around poor acceleration and noise from the front drivers side. I ordered a cv axle and may get a wheel hub and bearing if that doesn't work
I haven’t yet. Mine seems to accelerate ok. I have found if I give it a good amount of gas when taking off instead of starting slow it doesn’t do it as bad idk
For honda rear diffs, it's best to change them early for whatever reason. The onboard computer on modern acuras often recommends rear diff service at as early as 7k miles believe it or not

When mine wore out I just put sawdust in there it makes worn out gears run smooth as silk for a few days

Have you found the fix yet? I also replaced bearings and it didn't stop the noise. Did you try replacing the fluid as he said? Or the differential?
Its the fluid differential had to replace my whole differential due to metal shavings found inside

Never heard of anyone changing diff oil ever. You add to it if anything, shouldnt be a reason unless ofcouse youre replacing bearings.
Or a replacing a failed gasket
The heat causes it to lose viscosity. That's why it needs to be changed. You think it's "low" but it's really just used up so it's thinner
