This was more a function of Subway's greed opening franchise on top of franchise cannibalizing and ripping off it's own franchisees. It soon after began retracting.
My master remembers the DQ and A&W days in the late 60s. A&W had the drive-ins with the order speakers with hostesses coming out. it was a real hang out for kids/teens back then, and some trouble as well.
A&W was probably the last of the great “Drive-in” restaurants, where high school age girls on roller skates would take your order and attach a tray to your car door. It’s not surprising the restaurant lost ground like crazy after the 60’s.
I remember going to the Dairy Queen as a child in the early 1950s. All they served was soft-served ice cream, nothing else. They were closed during the winter here in Minnesota. I assume they were open year round in the South.
Of any fast-food franchise, I think A&W has one of the most socially responsible business models, at least where I live. I never went there as a child, but I purposely look for them now when in the mood for fast food. Their food is no worse than any other fast-food joint, there is just nothing that makes them standout within a crowded industry. That is to say, they just never had the marketing strategy to compete with the larger companies.

This graph is not right, by the mid 90's subways already had way more locations than any other restaurant and Taco Bell almost had just as many as Mc D's I did a presentation for mt class and was surprised subways was the biggest chain in the world.

The phrase "biggest fast food chains" probably should be talking about gross profit, not the number of outlets. If you measured by profits rather than number of stores, McDonald's would currently be 5 times larger than Subway, in 2024.
I know Tims is limited to Canada and some US locations but I find it hard to believe there are so few when some streets here have like 4, one on each corner. Unless they dont count all the little stalls in malls lol

Pre internet and mega corporation era places like McDonalds and Burger King etc were delicious. When I was a kid around 1975 places really started to get their shit together and the food became excellent. Chicken sandwiches were sooo good. Then around 2000 the mega corporation effect came in and quality started going down. Today chicken sandwiches at Burger King and Arby’s are crap. Big Macs and Whoppers are tasteless. Even chains like Red Lobster the fried seafood tastes like a frozen dinner. I will say Sonic still has decent burgers. And Red Robin. But overall I pass on fast food and chain places. Rather support local restaurants that at least give you some quality though expensive.
Five Guys is good - At least where I live they pile on the fries. At McDonalds they give you just enough to make the fry container look full and that is it. They also nickle and dime you for toppings.
Subway makes it that high compared to the rest is, Subway is the cheapest franchise to buy into and run, that’s why there are so many. Look at their franchise cost compared to the rest .

yeah.. the only problem is that they are so convenient that lots of people eat it all the time and it really is not healthy food. It could be worse but it definitely is very calorie dense and fattening. There are amazing amount of independent restaurants and bars and grills as well.... When you live rural in the USA it is strange because you notice everyone in suburbs and urban areas eat out constantly. Meanwhile; its a treat for rural people like myself. Because we aren't going to drive a long distance just for a fast food burger.

There are cases of people waiting 15-20 minutes for their orders at many of these establishments due to incompetence of the less skilled workers they have there now compared to in the past and more complicated menus. It's practically just as quick to order at a sit down restaurant now.
@@WoozyPolarBear My favorite is the incompetent McDonalds near me where you order your food in the drive through, pay for it, then they have you park so they can bring it out. It makes there turn around time look great but we are all still waiting. Then they screw up the order anyway.

When I lived in Canada, there was literally a Tim Hortons on every second shopping plaza. Makes it harder for franchise owners to distinguish their branch over another competing one down the road.

I would never call a pizza place, coffee shop, or donut shop a fast food restaurant. Just on the idea that with pizza, coffee, and donuts you get the items at the speed it requires to make them. Nothing fast about them. Whereas, in a fast food restaurant you're getting food items faster than if you ordered them at a family style restaurant. Claiming coffee shops and donut places serving breakfast sandwiches makes them so, would than make all convenient stores chains "fast food restaurants" as well. Just my opinion.
