This was released in 1968. They are considered one of pioneers of the Progressive Rock genre & founded in 1964. They are one of my favorites of that era. They have an extensive catalog of amazing songs. The lead vocalist is Justin Hayward & has been one since 1966. I saw them live (Early-90’s) at a venue by the ocean on a clear summer night. To say that it was an experience would be a glaring understatement. Never in my craziest dreams did I expect this to be on your channel. Thank you so much 😊.

This song was released in 1967 not '68. It was re-released in the '70's and really hit then. They toured with the Beatles and shared Brian Epstein as manager for a while. Mike Pindar introduced the Mellotron to the Beatles and has played on at least one recording. The song was based on some satin sheets gifted to Justin Hayward by his girlfriend. They did part ways and he soon thereafter met the woman he would marry (and is STILL married to).
This song is from one of the first concept albums called Days of Future Passed which was considered groundbreaking and created the genre of Art Rock, Symphonic Rock and helped to cement the beginnings of Prog Rock. They also invented the electric drum. Rock Hall of Fame in 2018.

This song is the last song on the album Days of Future Passed, in order to fully enjoy this fantastic work of art you really need to sit down and listen to the entire album from the start with the day's beginning to the end at the night. This album was one of the very first progressive rock concept albums. They used orchestral interludes to bind the songs together in a coherent theme about the cycles we see happening in nature and our lives. If you just want to put this song on your play list I suggest the extended version and not this radio edit. There is a spoken word poem, the Late Lament, at the end with some awesome orchestration on the studio album extended version.

The Moody Blues were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in May 1964. The band initially consisted of drummer Graeme Edge, guitarist/vocalist Denny Laine, keyboardist/vocalist Mike Pinder, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Ray Thomas, and bassist/vocalist Clint Warwick.

The orchestal sounds during this recording from 1967 were performed by Mike Pinder playing the Mellotron. He created the sound of the Moody Blues and has the moniker The Mellotron Man. The Days of Future Passed album was the second album by the Moody Blues from 1967. The album was a blend of their songs about a day in the life of any man and the orchstral segments between each song were performed by the London Festival Orchestra. The transitions between each song were written by Peter Knight the orchestra's conductor, using the themes from each song. The band and the orchestra never played together. The album was produced by Tony Clarke, the sixth Moody. The Moodies ware at the forefront of progressive rock and DoFP was one of the first concept albums. "Tuesday Afternoon" is another song from this album you should react to. The Moody Blues were active until Graeme Edge, the drummer and only original member of the band from 1964, passed away in January 2018 just 3 months before they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The song has a very nostalgic edge to it.
This band line up actually had four lead singers - and all of them were good. The mood of this song is typical of the band. This line up originally produced seven studio albums between 1967-72, all of which I'm sure you will find amazing and will also want to have on your playlist. Later, they made a comeback and have been performing until fairly recently. There were other albums to follow and have been several solo albums plus a joint one by Guitarist Justin Hayward and bassist John lodge. The latter two are now the only surviving band members.

  • @leahwarburton

A lot of the songs from this era had deeper meanings. Often anti war, criticizing the political scene, or holding a mirror up to society. Remember this was the Vietnam War era (America's last military unit left Vietnam 29 March 1973).
I've always thought this song was about a soldier, thinking about better times, and the one he loves back home.
There are lines "Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore ", "Just what I'm going through, They can't understand", "Some try to tell me, Thoughts they cannot defend", which I feel ring so true even today.
Here we are, over 50 years later, and I wonder "has the world really changed at all?" I mean, there have been a LOT of changes. What I have seen in my lifetime... Especially the late 80s... (Which reminds me - have you heard "Winds Of Change" by Scorpions? If not, you really MUST). But, fundamentally, have we changed? Have we grown? Or are we still travelling down that same path?
I know we can do better. I know there is hope. I have seen the face of it. It's shape and colour. I know we can make the world a better place. Not just with technology, but with our HEARTS. And a love for our fellow man.
Wow. Sorry. I didn't mean to go off like that. But I think that's the true power of music. It makes us THINK, it makes us SEE, it can INSPIRE, and it makes us FEEL.

You can see them perform right here on UTube & many other beautiful songs they sung. Justin Hayward was the lead singer, guitar player…Ray Thomas played the flute, tambourine & singer…John Lodge sang, played Bass guitar, Mike Pinder played piano, singer…Graeme Edge played drums & singer. Today, Justin Hayward was performing with 3 other people who play guitar, piano & flute, both women who sing beautifully. Graeme Edge & Ray Thomas have passed away.😪 Mike Pinder left the band years before, he’s still living today.

Luke, The Moody Blues have had hit after hit after hit. You're right about it sounding like it was from the 70s or 80s while also right about it being from the Beatles' era of the 60s. The band was wayyyy ahead of their time. Some say that they're the founders of Progressive Rock and it's also been said that they may have been the first band ever to release a total concept album.
Justin also shared vocal duties on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds rock opera alongside Phil Lynott, lead vocalist of Thin Lizzy. Talk about an amazing project. Justin's song Forever Autumn (from the WotW album/concert film) IMHO may be one of the most beautiful rock (w/symphonic) songs ever made.
Rock operas were more common back in the day than the are now, unfortunately, one of the best out there has been pretty much forgotten. It was a rock opera from around 1970 starring members of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Ronnie James Dio and numerous other British rockers of the time. It was called The Butterfly Ball and hosted by horror icon Vincent Price. It's must see if you get a chance to watch it since it's still available where you are most likely.
Now as for your other question, The Doors (who sang The End) had the same emotional feel as The Moody Blues but were definitely quite different in musical style. I'd say The Moody Blues were more similar to early Genesis or Pink Floyd on a musical level but you're 100% right on The Moody Blues being very similar to The Doors on an emotional level. Both Justin Hayward and Jim Morrison were poets at heart and true legends at it.

This song was written as a song of unrequited love… The lady he fell madly in love with did not love him back, and this song was written out of those emotions.

When I was a kid my uncle made me and my brother a mix tape of oldies from his record collection, and this was one of the songs on it. Listen to this song brings on a wave of nostalgia because of that. I recommend listening to Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams” or Eddie Hodges’ “(Girls, Girls, Girls) Are Made To Love”.

This is an album band. They were known for putting out albums that have a beginning, middle & end. It’s well worth listening to the whole album for the full effect. Many bands in that era were into fantasy oriented songs, Led Zeppelin referenced Lord of The Rings in a lot of their songs. Queen got into it too.
I love the bass in this song. They have several great albums….Days of Future Past would be a good start. Great reaction. I still have my originals or their albums & still love them!

There are two trains of thought re The Moody Blues 1)they’re one of the best bands of the 60s-70s 2) their music is pretentious & annoying. I’m of the first persuasion. Most of their albums were concept albums - the songs told a story when listened from beginning to end. So that’s the best way to approach their music rather than 1 song plucked from a discography. Just saying that as a point of context.
This song really brings back lots of emotions. And yes, I still listen to them nearly 60 years later.

Same. They're always on my playlists. I was only about 14 in 1968 the first time I heard them on a record my older brother had bought. I played it non-stop for hours...until my parents shut it down!

I only know their songs from the late 80's era...
But I know they been around the 60's and highly respected and part of the British invasion.
But yeah, I am going to Amazon and DL this...
They been disband for sometime now, especially with one of their dude die. In a way, like Beastie Boys.. once one guy gone, the band call it quits.

*Day 155* of recommending the *Beyblade openings* .
There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. I made playlists on my channel, so you don't need to search, cause in those compilations are a few off and not in the correct order. Thanks for checking out!
