A local AM radio station used to use the poem "Late Lament" as their sign off at midnight complete with final gong instead of the national anthem. You should listen to their whole album, "Days of Future Pased." Peter Knight arranged the orchestrations for the London Festival Orchestra, the 'house orchestra' for Decca Records. Knight also did one orchestration for Richard and Karen Carpenter for their song, "I Just Fall in Love Again," which is well worth listening to.

Justin Hayward, the lead singer, is in his 70s now and still has the same voice. There is a great live version from Royal Albert Hall in London and it's simply stunning.

I've also always felt it sounded more modern- ahead of its time. Amazing instrumentation. The lyrics in the late lament ( another verse) get deeper and more mystical in the long version. Love that flute.❤

It is a masterpiece, going through the course a day starting with dawn through the afternoon into the evening, then nights, thus "Nights In White Satin" If you get some time, I highly recommend it.
The Moody Blues had been active as a band for over 50 years (1964-2018). It began as a British R & B outfit led by Denny Laine (later a guitarist for Paul McCartney's Wings). Their first (and only) big hit with Denny was "Go Now" (might be worth checking out for the contrast). After Denny Laine left the band in 1966 to pursue his own career, and their bassist, Clint Warwick left for family reasons, the band recruited John Lodge (bass) and Justin Hayward (guitars). When the band realized that the R & B sound left with Denny, they worked hard to develop their own voice, and "Nights in White Satin" was one of the results. Because their career was so long, it's hard to give other suggestions. Some of their more well-known songs are: "Ride My See-Saw", "Question", "The Story in Your Eyes", "I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)", "The Voice", "Your Wildest Dreams", and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere". One song in particular that I'd suggest that's perhaps atypical would be "Legend of a Mind"; it's a psychedelic tribute to Timothy Leary.

I was too young to understand what the lyrics meant, but it's one of the reasons why I fell in love with music. I just watched a video today with Justin Hayward (the singer and writer of this song) performing it just a couple of months ago. He still sounds great for his age and it's still one of my favorite songs. "The Voice" is another of their songs that you might enjoy.

Have you ever heard "Appalchian Spring" by Modern American Classic Composer Aaron Copeland ? I reccommend it as a very large change of pace. ~ You will probably recognize parts of it. It is about 25 minutes !

The Moody Blues were ahead of their time. People weren't as ready for their music when the song came out in 1967. I would strongly recommend listening to the live performance of this song where they play with a full orchestra. It's a totally different experience.
The full version is even better and has so much more to it, including a very deep poem at the end of the song. But, you missed the best part of the orchestration reacting to the short version. It has quite an amazing and dramatic ending.

I was fortunate enough to see the live in Morgantown, WV in the mid-80s. They were visually as ethereal as the music sounds with blue & purple lighting swooping around pale baby spots in the same cool tones.

Oh, how the bands that we loved when we were teenagers have accompanied us throughout our lives. I still get chills and have a massive crush for Paul McCartney, David Gilmour and Justin Hayward (Moody Blues lead singer, lead guitar and songwriter). Almost all the Moodies' songs were written by Justin Hayward. Although I love all their songs, my favorite for deeply personal reasons is The Story In Your Eyes.

You will love this rabbit hole, The Moody Blues did have other singles hits but they created a run of classic albums and that's where their heart lies. They almost invented the prog concept album, where an album was designed and track listed to be experienced from start to finish. This album was called 'Days of future passed' and each track follows the path of a day, and they continued this idea through 7 albums where songs segue into one another. It would be worth doing what you did with 'Dark side of the moon' and doing extended reactions as A and B sides of their albums. All five members of the band were credited with bringing in their own songs, which made them a very creative and varied mix. Along with the signature mellotron sound which enabled them to simulate that big orchestral sound, the flute featured regularly, and the albums also had poems written by the drummer and read by the keyboard player.
It's really interesting to see people reacting to the first time hearing these Mega Bands that those who grew up with them take for granted. These bands were almost background music to the children of the 1970s (graduated HS in 1981). I actually saw them (or most of them) at an Arizona State Fair sometime in the 1990s. I later saw Meat Loaf at the State Fair around 2010-2012 or something like that. He had lost range and needed background vocalists to make up for it but his performance still left buckets of sweat on the stage...

Have you ever heard Dusty Springfield ? ~ From England, One of the best woman singers of the 1960s and beyond. "You don't Have to Say Youy love Me", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow ? , " Wishin and Hopin"", "I Just Don't know What to Do With Myself".
The entire album "Days of Future Past" that this comes from is one of those classic "have to listen to it in one go" albums. An early concept album, the entire thing is organized like the parts of a day.

It's really interesting to see people reacting to the first time hearing these Mega Bands that those who grew up with them take for granted. These bands were almost background music to the children of the 1970s (graduated HS in 1981).
I actually saw them (or most of them) at an Arizona State Fair sometime in the 1990s.
I later saw Meat Loaf at the State Fair around 2010-2012 or something like that. He had lost range and needed background vocalists to make up for it but his performance still left buckets of sweat on the stage...

The entire album "Days of Future Past" that this comes from is one of those classic "have to listen to it in one go" albums. An early concept album, the entire thing is organized like the parts of a day.

Long album version Definitely. This is always true with very few exceptions. The album version is the artists version, the edited version is the record corp version.

I'm 68 years old. This is my favorite song of all time. I had the honor of seeing them twice in concert. Once in the 80's & for the 50th anniversary of the Days of Future Passed album. They were great both times. However, you stopped too soon.
