Green Hell Review - The Final Verdict

- Green Hell makes no bones about what it is and can’t be faulted for being a purposefully difficult game that knows how to keep your back against the wall. Even after you get your arms around everything that’s expected of you, it doesn’t really feel like it loses that edge over you, so for that, Green Hell accomplishes exactly what it seems to want. It’s a relentless test of your ability to plan, solve problems, and adapt.
What it doesn’t do is give you a user interface that facilitates your already steep uphill climb of getting the hang of things, nor does it land on the PS4 in a way that keeps the gameplay feeling smooth and responsive enough to praise this version very much as a port. Thankfully, the flaws of this version don’t ever quite stop it from being a fun challenge that manages to remain enticing despite the abuse it dishes out.
the survival mechanics is not bad, but the simple fact that predators can walk through walls in a game that's so many years in development is absolute bullshit

Its a more realistic approach but same concept, fight off natives of the land and survive
it has some simularitys but dont expect a combat based game its all about finding cures and making sure you dont die also the building is way more simple because of those reasons
I remember a friend of mine kept calling the Natives cannibals since he was experienced in The Forest. Funny since we the players were the ones cannibalizing them. Especially since we harvested them for their bones to make bone broth got our nutrients minus the sanity decrease.

The complaint about the disjointed crafting systems sounded completely off to me. The reviewer is describing how to craft and how to build, those are not the same thing. This game has a steep learning curve, but the interface does not get in the way at all IMHO.
I thought like him at first, but it makes sense if you think about what you're about to do. You can MAKE items directly from the backpack, but you BUILD structures via the notebook. For example, you make the fire starter kit, but you have to build the pyramid of sticks to get your fire going.
Make more sense as some items can be made on the go but structures are semi permanent.
Sorry but after playing the PS4 version for the last 5 days straight, I can tell you he is spot-on. The crafting and building menus are not fun to navigate at all, and it's the lag spikes and slow loading which are the worst part about it. Unless you've tried it on the PS4 you won't understand, the controls are fiddly as fuck even when you're used to them.
I've played plenty of survival games that didn't have this problem, which is a shame because it really does hold this game back from being one of the better survival experiences.

Cause I love the way you build and craft in this game. You combine your items to craft and piece together materials to build. Instead of some other games where you just click the picture of the item/building you want and it automatically takes the resources out of your inventory and makes it. Thats boring to me. And makes you lose some of your immersion.
Ive always been a PlayStation player. But Ive gotten a PC recently and I play Green Hell on the PC. I like playing survival games alot more on the PC for some reason.

I am in day 8 and it starts to get really buggy. I have to restart the game over and over because out of nowhere I can't change weapons, check my clock or interact with anything. Does this happens for anybody else? It was fine the first hours of the game. I play on PS4

i was playing multiplayer with my buddy and i died and when i came back i wasn't able to interact or pickup anything until i left the game and re joined. on pc.
I'm on ps4 and way past 100 days on survival still haven't come across any issues

Honestly green hell is the most complex real feeling survival game I’ve ever played. It’s tremendously fun with friends, don’t let this review fool you, although the game can be “tedious” it’s extremely rewarding, the story mode is good, and survival mode is replayable. The drag and drop is hardly and issue because only times you are forced to do so is when you are placing something in its respective spots. Green hell is also a slow paced game most of the time, so moving fast at all times doesn’t feel necessary; but to each their own right?
i have played the game since it came out on ps4 and got the hang of the bad menus in 2 days right now i kinda like the menus and controls so if those things bother you i advise to just keep trying
Got the hang of the menus but the constant lag spikes and slow loading made it a miserable experience for me. The gameplay itself is good though.

I need to get back into the game I found it way too easy once I understood what does what. I am hoping Green hell difficulty now truly becomes hell. I thought the game was pretty well made, sure the 2 crafting systems might seem daunting, but you use the book for structures and the crafting stone for tools. The game is a steep learning curve especially for people that arent used to plants from the Americas especially when it comes to plants.
If you watch shows like I Shouldn't Be Alive and payed attention to the stories that take place in Southern Americas you will be better armed than most players when starting.

You *DO NOT* have to be familiar whatsoever with the plants of the Americas. Especially in South America. 98% of the edible vegetation is literally labeled *unknown* because even the character who is supposed to be a survivalist or journalist doesn't even know what they are. So how can you watch a survival show and then automatically know what the plants are in game? You just have to eat everything once to immediately find out what will happen haha.
If I went off of a survival show. Then when i play green hell the last thing i would do would eat all the random mushrooms I come across lol. Even though thats what you are supposed to do in the game.
@@virginiareaper1178 Say what you want but you are dead wrong on the main character being a survivalist, he is a Doctor of Anthropology those usually go with an entourage of guides and hunters.
Also to note the game takes place on the second expedition, not really much experience to know what is necessary for survival there, that is more tourist level knowledge at best.
As for the game having flora and fauna knowledge does help in ways to deal with the situation without death, or you can play blindly.
As for me I like having survival knowledge beforehand just in case something happens so I don't get in that situation.
@@BenjiPOTF You say im dead wrong, but you proved my point. Its the characters SECOND expedition, and hes a damn anthropologist. If you are working in a field to study a rainforest tribe society. Then you definitely are going to be prepared and have *atleast* semi survivalist capabilities, to determine the landscape and what's around you. Especially if its your second time out.
You aren't listening to me, you are too focused on wanting to win an argument. What I'm saying is, if the character doesn't even know the names or effects of the plants around him, when its his job to study the cultures, tribes, and societies that live off them. AND its his second time out being there. So then how do you expect to know right off rip the names and effects yourself.
I grew up watching survival shows. And in no way shape or form would you be able to tell buy just seeing yellow, red, blue, and/or orange mushrooms. That they would be safe to eat just because of watching a tv show. Its a video game so you aren't able to even see what the mushrooms even look like other then there colors.
And again I highly doubt you are herbologist and where able to look at every in game plant. And be able to say "ohhh yeah that's such and such and these are the effects". When the damn game even labels them as *unknown*
It wants you to test them out and the side effects to learn what they are. You do not need prior knowledge or anything coming into this game. It just makes no sense to even say that.
But if you said knowing about survival tactics, like how to obtain food and hunt, certain wildlife to watch out for. Or even knowing how to craft makeshift tools. Boiling water before drinking, not sleeping on the rainforest floor, dont run through a rainforest and be slow and watchful. All that would help coming into any survival game, and you would have learned that basic stuff from survival shows, books, movies.

I played it on normal (Welcome To The Jungle) and it's very hard only just before you manage to make a shelter.
Also most plants and mushrooms are good to you. It's really not that hard to figure it out.
The character is not Bear Grylls but he's a decent survivalist: he can make a fire and build tools, things that most urbanites cannot do.

Its still worth playing. I'm half way through it now and the controls are a pain in the arse but you get used to them and it definitely shouldn't be reason to stop you playing it. If you e played the Forest, Subnautica, below zero etc.. then this is a must. It's much harder and trickier control wise but the game play is fantastic especially if you like really tough survival games and you completed the Forest on Hard Survival.
Buy a pc and never look back.

I've played the original story about 3 times now as multiple friends asked me for help with their games. Currently slowly working my way through Spirits of Amazonia.
The game is hard, but hardcore survivalists will enjoy it! I love this game and it's highly underrated!

@@nikolas3516 it's awesome. I'm really impressed with this game. The jungle really isn't that big but it feels like it is, and it's very easy to get lost in. just surviving at all feels like an accomplishment. It's very unforgiving and hell-like, but once you learn the different plants and recipes it becomes really fun.

@@forgotmyusername2 well, you do need to be sort of patient as it can take a lot of time to even have the proper food or gear to explore. I find myself spending a lot of time just surviving lol and it takes a while to build the resources to feel comfortable advancing the story

its kind of realistic, but gameplay menus or for example crafting menu needs time to get used to it. i play it on switch ( im xbox fan) , position of buttons makes me

I picked this game up today. This is right up my alley. I like getting my ass kicked. That's the fun part of the game.
For me I prefer the forest. I am on that ( after discovering it 3 months ago) and will continue until sons of the forest is out in May.

I tried stranded deep and idk if I could do it all over agin with this game, I was a huge forest player but you have to be in a real mood to play these games, like you have to want to feel trapped and be ok with everything killing you ten million times before kool stuff starts to happen... it's weird but sometimes there fun maybe for discount I'll add it to the collection and play it one day...

This review doesn't place enough emphasis on the infuriating bugs for the PS4 version, particularly with the base building. 7/10 is too high imo, it's a 5.
I've never played a survival game like this before, but got excited hearing about this game coming go VR. Would someone not into hardcore survival still enjoy this game?
the learning curve is pretty steep so as a newcomer to the genre it may be jarring idk. honestly if I were to recommend a survival sim to someone I'd go for The Long Dark, it's pretty much the gold standard for old and new survival fans.
I am a bit late, but i think so. This game was the first real survival game i played, because a friend wanted to play it with me. But i had a lot of fun, and it probably helped that he guided me through the game, but i had a good time.
This is the first survival game I've ever played, unless you count me playing about 2 hrs of Minecraft 4 years ago. I am addicted to this game its so frustrating and hard and scary and beautiful. I love this game!

Why is that a big problem for some people or even a deal breaker? As long as the game is fun and isn't stuttering to the point were you can't do anything. Then it's fine for me atleast.
Of course I would want a game to be perfectly optimized. But it's not a big deal or a deal-breaker for me if it's not at the time.
@@virginiareaper1178 In a game like green hell, screen tearing just makes the game ugly when playing it tbh.
Having screen tears also pulls you out of the immersion, but that is just my own personal opinion, even more so when there is a lot of foilage that really makes it obvious.
@@Hyrden89 Yeah, true. You are right about that. I didn't think about the immersion factor. I've always been a console gamer, primarily a Playstation player. So I always played games that were made to be played on that software. But now im new to PC gaming, since I bought a cheap refurbished PC that was upgraded for gaming by a company, which was supposed to be a starter PC for me to get started. But its just good enough software to where I can play older games on high settings like Green Hell, Witcher 3, etc. But not any AAA next gen games.
So I have had to get used to lower graphics, frame rate, and sometimes screen tear. When trying to play a newer PC game.
Im saving up now, so I can buy a $1000-$3000 gaming PC. That I can upgrade for years to come.

It's actually pretty easy once you know which plant does what. It actually becomes TOO easy. Even on the hardest difficulty, I can speed-run storymode in about 2 hours.
The narrator's voice has a funny pattern where his tone reflects upward throughout the sentence, then back downward on the next. Positive aspect to negative aspect, rinse and repeat with same exact emotion XD

@@rustyshackleford2022 awwww bless you for trying to troll, leaves don’t filter the water and yes you could use a micro rock style filter but it would be pointless and in a survival situation such as an island or rain forest you are better off catching the water then filtering it, or creating a Condensation structure using the underside of leaves and a fire source. Calm down before commenting next time as not every Situation in survival is the same, rain water isn’t healthy to drink straight.

The Xbox version also gets very choppy at points. I enjoy the H3LL out of the challenge, but the menu and crafting mechanics CAN be frustrating.

It must be console cause on PC the crafting is great.

@@kensavage7657 Yes I did, but honestly it was 4 months ago I made that comment. But what I remember was, the majority of the complaints are on the console. And most people in the comments played on console also. I personally didn't find any problems with crafting on PC. That was all I was saying. I wasn't being disrespectful..
@@virginiareaper1178 Yea, the "backpack crafting" and management seems to be maybe a little more suited for PC players but on console, you don't have to manually drag and drop everything like they showed here in the review. I play on Xbox, and when crafting, you literally get button prompts letting you add an item to your crafting "pile" so you don't have to tediously drag each piece around.

there's something really unfair with this game...Just started a new game, my axe broke....I spent the last hour looking for a stick. I must have combed like 8-10 grids, not even one...I just quit and will uninstall, I like this game for the most part, but I refuse to do these egg hunts anymore...I play games to relax, not get stressed
At the very start of the game you find a village with a bone knife once you pick it up you can use it to cut small tree down then you go from there

if you play on medium ore easy you realy dont have to worry about the diets since all different types of foods are relativly easy to find and you can only get parasites by eating food while you are dirty or if you drink unsafe water and you have to do something horribly wrong to get youre sanity on dangerous levels i might make it sound easy here but its still a hard game but i would recommend it

It's kind of like stranded deep. But in the jungle. Cool it sounds like fun hell.
Personally I prefer stranded deep, for the “relaxed” survival style, the forest was just ok as it was basically an empty map, 7 days to die is great for the tactical survival. Which leads me to green hell, a decent mix of 7 days and the forest, clunky but manageable still feels empty with few options to build outside of the narrative of the game, I like to continue building and making a “base” and test the limits of how much and how big I can build all the while defending against the npc’s and elements.

@@Ass_Raiders_OG I loved the game started with 2 other friends in the end I was the only one to finish all the content the rest quit one for good the other came back and finished it once I was a pro at it. I have to get back to it, I wonder how much the difficulty has changed but it used to be as long as you payed attention and always landed head shots on anything game was easy. I hoped they fixed than since bow hunting you usually aim for the heart

I’ve heard and seen a bit of green hell, I’m a fan of the forest and I’m looking for a game to tie me over till sons of the Forest comes out
This game is a complete waste of time. For days upon days all you do is try to make a hut, make a fire, wash your hands, eat food, drink water and then sleep and by the time you wake up you have to everything all over again and if you're lucky you can explore for like maybe 20 minutes before you have to run back to camp and do all the everyday stuff again. The jaguar is too easy to kill and always makes that growl sound before it approaches which no predator cat would ever do. The bow and arrow is worthless, no matter how high your skill level with it. I bought the game just because I saw a video late at night of a guy who said it was the hardest survival game ever made. This game is not hard at all just time expensive.

I really wanted to play this game without checking a wiki. It seems so meticulous at first to show you the recipes you need, showing you the bandages etc and giving you enough tips that hint to others.
But I have one big problem with this. If you're going to spam me this much with tooltips and plethora of construction recipes, then maybe you should include something to store some fucking water in. Excuse my French, but seriously! That pisses me off. I could create a bowl with some banana leaves and some grass. I could carve a bow out of a piece of wood. I could carve a bowl out of a rock.
For crying out loud! I just HAVE to know what your decision making process was behind this. Because you can't say "we want players to discover stuff on their own" if you're spamming the shit out of me with useless construction recipes. Holy FUCK.
oh man I feel this completely. I went in blind on purpose so I could get the full experience, but it just ended up being so goddamn frustrating because there are things you need to do that you would never think to do logically. I ended up having to check the wiki over and over to figure out how to make stuff that I think should have been less convoluted to create.
By the way you can craft a water holder with a shelled coconut and a piece of rope.

I was going to buy this game but the fact it has a narrative was a turn off for me. If I want to buy a hardcore survival game I'd rather craft my own story naturally. Through weird attempts and adventures with each attempt.
There is story mode and survival mode and s challenges mode mate I got it today
Also if you like stuff like this then farcry primal is a must
There are different game modes, you don't have to play the Story Mode. Plus, each mode has the option for Co-Op play so you can either go it alone or play with up to 3-4 other players.
Story Mode: Gives you a minimum and basic tutorial for the first 10-15 minutes of the game and sets up the narrative before kicking the training wheels off and dropping you into the game. You'll progress to get to a certain point before you are able to progress the narrative plot.
Survival Mode: It's Story Mode without the story. It just drops you at a random point in the forest and the rest is all up to you. Your only goal is to see how long you can survival. Survival Mode has different difficulty settings to make it fairly easy or insanely brutal. Though with the Survival Mode, there is an option where you can customize the settings to be as forgiving or as punishing as you want. You can turn some features like the the tribal natives off if you don't want them trashing your camp. You can make it so your stats drain faster or slower. You can even turn on a perma-death option if you so chose to.
Challenge Mode: This is like a small blend of the two modes. With Challenge Mode, you have different scenarios you can play through to test your knowledge and skills. One challenge may have you finding/crafting a raft to escape by water. Or another one may have you try to build a massive base camp or hunt a certain number of different animals...each with a time limit of only having so many in-game days to complete the scenario you picked.

Just picked this up for $2 on the Switch eShop.
Being basically a hardcore survival game, I'd say they did a great job honestly. People complaining that it's difficult but that's what it's supposed to be. I highly recommend playing on only pc if you don't have one get one, thank me later.

i played the pre-release for pc, haven't played the story mode yet, but i have trust issues about Jake's wife she sounds like a bitch, in the intro you can ear her getting annoyed to him when he says that place is dangerous, and if you play the game there is a part where she is in the bedroom, i think, in that part you go there talk to her and she tells you to go away, and if you insist in talking to her she becomes aggressive..
I was just thinking this. A couple hours in and I don't trust her

I love this game.... and frankly it's not that hard once you understand what you are doing.
In fact once you know what you are doing, things go rather smooth. You just need to be careful and prepared.
For example cougars and hostile tribe members ceased to be a huge threat once you get armor, a spear and a bow. Rather they become resources!
Frankly most of the time the game kicked my ass, it was mostly my fault for not being careful... and even then I usually can salvage the situations.

Also on the PC controls are great. Not sure why you struggle so much, it's really not complicated.
