@@moonsoon1038 yeah, or at least an entirely new setting. One if the strengths of the first couple of Resident Evil games was that they used different locations, different characters, and told different stories. The two games didn't negate the other for this reason. Resident Evil 2 may of been much better than the first, but the first was still very good and unique experience, because it was set in a creepy mansion as opposed to a creepy police station. It's different. Each game was worth playing even if you played the other.
The game might have flaws but they did a remarkable job for it. It made me return back when I was a young lad back in Resident evil 1 2 3 silent hill, Fatal frame days. I love Horror games with Puzzles which adds up tension and use your brains to get out of the situation. I kinda wish future Fatal frame will look like this. I do hope the devs will continue on creating this masterpiece of theirs and it was a very great promising project they created.
Almost at the end now, gotta say I’m really loving the atmosphere! Excellent for an indie. I already want a remake or a sequel to this with a bigger budget. Edit: beat it the other day. My advice if you want to play this game casually is to use a guide. It took me around 10 hours and the guide really helped nothing drag on too long. I don't recommend to always use the guide though. Just when you get to a hard puzzle. The puzzles are great but would take a long time to figure out on your own and that can be real exhausting. So streamline it and just focus on resource management and the experience. Absolutely love most of the camera work and the atmosphere. The monster designs are lame but the old school combat and resource management is great. Hope they get enough funds to make a bigger better game in this style. I bought 3 copies just to support them lol this kind of game is truly a rarity these days.
@@Stigmatix666 hopefully they get a chance to make a sequel or successor and improve on every we got here and if the story is good enough we could potentially have a horror classic on our hands!
@@thegreatpoo2electricboogal318 I agree. I rewatched the credit scene, and was awestruck by how small the dev team actually was. Even the "thank you" list was longer.. Sure, the game may have a few shortcomings and the story may be a bit transparent for us horror game veterans, but no-one can deny the obvious dedication here. I'd gladly buy a sequel or spiritual successor top this game.
God I really like this game but the way they designed the puzzles made them unapproachable to a number of player even for old school fans. Nevertheless it’s a solid game with Clear RE/Silent Hill inspirations.
Yea the puzzles are really challenging. I remember Silent Hill 2 having a difficulty setting for puzzles. This should really benefit from a similar feature. I feel the puzzles are like SH hard mode.
I am an old school fan of classic survival horror and the puzzles in this game are "TORMENTED", agreed, but the game gives you ALL THE TOOLS, HINTS AND INFO to solve them. I've been able to finish the game without any kind of guide. Greetings from Spain:)
Easily worth 30$ (physical game) in my book. Although it could use quite some polish I wouldn't hesitate to give the developers 40$ for their next oldschool survival-horror game.
This game is a mixture of the first two Silent Hill and and first two Resident Evil games. It resembled Silent Hill because of the camera angles and nightmare world. It resembled Resident Evil because of its main hall and having its own version of Mr X (though the chaser did not give me the same thrills that Mr X did). I did enjoy the game for being different for being a throwback to older horror games and giving you the chills. The music and environment were scary. It did suck though in some ways because it's so dark, even with your flashlight, and when combined with fixed camera angles and scarce health and ammo, it was a far more difficult game for me to beat than any other horror game I'm yet to play. This game was quite challenging for me to beat. Period.
I downloaded it when it came out Friday but wasn't feeling well so couldn't finish. Can't wait to go back in. and play again. I'm stuck at the part before you go through their mirror portal..
This game took me by surprise. Sure, it's clear it was made on a budget and it has it's issues but it's leagues better than any of the Western Silent Hill games. It's genuinely pretty unnerving and will scratch that SH itch in lieu of the real deal. I really hope this does well so the studio can stretch their wings a bit and continue with these types of games with even more polish.
Only thing I didn't enjoy was not having saves available at all times. I know it's nostalgically correct, but it was a real pain when I'd played for a few hours, died, and had to do all of it over again. Didn't make me wanna keep playing. But I'll give it another go.
Yeah that's just old school game design for ya. That's kinda why I like it though. It, and games like it, force you to know your route and really be careful with your decisions. Combat can be a literal death sentence every time. I have missed that about horror games. Even the decision to save, is a very conscious decision.
@@mattmas6628 You’re not wrong. It’s just the kind of thing that sometimes makes ne stop playing, when I really want to continue. And besides, today’s games condition you to get used to automatic saves. It’s jarring when all of a sudden, you don’t get them.

Best horror game I played all year. Updates have happened since this review. Stability it seems. Never crashed once. Like flashing map of the area you are in. I found it neat but since it tells you when you enter a room. If you don't have the memory of a orange you should be able to remember the name after 15 seconds..
I really want to see how it runs on Switch (I'll avoid puns like "keeping an eye out"). And I mostly want a new game like Eternal Darkness (with a bath scene that is actually the only memorable jump scare I ever saw) or The Thing (squad action with mutation, assimilation, fear, distrust, and mental breaking points), but this one seems good as well.
Hey man, just bought the switch physical copy. Although I’m only 20 minutes into it, it functions wonderfully. Visuals, lighting and general performance seem real good for the switch version. Obviously the detail is a tad down from consoles, but a worthwhile pickup!
i didn’t get to play this at launch due to not having next gen consoles or a pc, so i’m just now getting to play and i am hooked. i’m having so much fun my only complaint is that it crashed on me and i literally just did a big junk of the game which i’ll have to do again and hopefully i’m able to retrace every step i did 😕 but other than that i’m truly enjoying my experience it’s definitely not a triple A title, but that does not (for me) take away from it 10/10 would recommend ☺️
Don't let the negative comments from this review affect you getting this game, it's well worth it. The atmosphere alone and the cryptic puzzles and exploration along with the constant dread and spooky atmosphere makes for a great combo. The combat is more simplistic than frustrating and it's not all bad. Overall a great game and made me feel super nostalgic. Don't expect this game to hold your hand either because it definitely will not.
I have a hard time deciding on this one. I LOVE the old school games in fact I just went through so many of the classics during covid. The problem here is this doesn't look better than those games. The puzzles I hear are really hit and miss and I honestly don't like anything more involved that resident evil type. The combat looks so Shyte too. I don't even know if I like this protagonist she seems devoid of any personality. Can somebody who's played it tell me what's up? And this or song of horror. Thanks
Definitely Song of Horror. I enjoyed Tormented Souls for its old-school gameplay and atmosphere, but the game doesn't have much to offer in other aspects. On the other hand, Song of Horror is a much better horror game and experience overall.
@@big.atom37 i thought this was way better than song of horror. Song of horror is walking around and not doing much at all. I found it really boring honestly. But then Im sick of horror games where you cant do anything but run and hide.
@@jamespaul6315 Blank characters, bad voice acting, silly predictable plot, the camera angles constantly getting in the way and aiming that works only half of the time are the things you can expect from an old horror game, and they do have their charm but they don't exactly make the game better. Plus, the only scary thing in TS is running out of ammo. You might not like the run-and-hide types of games, that's fair, people have different tastes, but if you seriously claim that this game is better than SoH you are being dishonest.
@@big.atom37 nah, I thought SOH was boring as hell. You do nothing except walk around for a puzzle piece, qte a door or hiding place and rinse and repeat. The story isnt particularly compelling and neither are the characters. And the acting was pretty bad there too. I will admit its not stellar in this game, but at least this was never boring.
Maybe on sale, I've watched a few videos of this game and it hasn't impressed. I get that classic survival horror fans are extremely hungry for these kind of games. But, it definitely lacks that AAA skill and polish that the classics had. Shame we'll never get a proper sequel to Eternal Darkness...
I started out really liking this game but the more I played, the more did it annoy me and the less did I want to play it. There is not a single enemy in the game that is a challenge but some of the puzzles/riddles are just poor game design. It's either totally on the nose, super cryptic or flat-out makes no sense. The game can't decide if it wants to do easy puzzles and looking for key items like Resident Evil, block the player with cryptic shit like Silent Hill or be a point and click game from the 90's. There are instances, in which the game has a cryptic text somewhere which makes you believe you need a key item to continue, when in fact you had to stand in front of a very specific point to interact with something or click at a very small point on an object. There are also times when you find files that seemingly describe the story of the game or a character that gives you lore, only to find out you are supposed to take it as a direct hint how to continue, even when the game's previous established gameplay mechanics contradict with it. I had to look up how to continue a few times and let me say, everytime I did I was completely dumbfounded and thought that I would not have guessed the solution in a hundred years because the game keeps going against what it taught you. It also just tries too hard to come across as clever or deep. I write this out of pure frustration and as a warning to people who are interested in this game. I definitely want more classic survival horror games with fixed camera angles, but please not like this.
Agreed. Way harder and more obscure than it ever needed to be. Another thing.. The voice acting didn't bother me, but why on earth weren't they cutscenes? You had to spam the dialogue by pressing "X". Those could easily have been made into cutscenes. Not a deal-breaker, but somewhat annoying.
Just to give credits to the game, using the directional buttons and square to run on PS5 works just like the 90's game, with UP fixed to move forward. The movement with analogic joystick is a little off
Even dough it looks like a ps3 game this looks amazing. Im getting silent hill/ classic resident evil vibes. Its 2 bad they didnt take out 4 the current systems that sucks😔😔😔😔
So far I love the game my only complaint is the cash register puzzle. That puzzle might be the worst designed puzzle in survival horror history. Besides that I love the game. The hints given to u are useless and lead u to the wrong direction. I was not ashamed to look up this puzzle for its design flaw.
@@patrickraftery1815 I beat the game recently took me about 8hrs. I loved the puzzles. I just with there were more hints. Because sometimes I was completely lost. An example is the floppy disk puzzle to get the codename. I still like the concept. The puzzles seem silent hill inspired.
Are we PLEASE going to talk about how aweful her outfit is? It's like "I wanna be a real bad motocycle girl that kicks your ass" and then the designer noticed she might look too intimidating and added a flower dress with corset lacing and a gigantic bow?? Who approved this? :D EDIT: My problem is not the dress. It's the lack of character design and thought.
This review seems to imply that the disorientation caused by switching camera angles and the slow clunky combat are nostalgic features that could have done with being left behind. This isn't a valid criticism because these features serve a function. They're not just nostalgic leftovers from old games. Even in the old games they served a specific function. It makes no sense to be agile and quick-moving in a horror game that's supposed to make you feel claustrophobic and vulnerable. However, I do agree that the content of the narrative was poor and uninteresting. This was especially frustrating due to the sheer amount of notes were lying around that you were expected to read.
i mean its been a long time since i saw something and said to myself , this is for me , i love this style i need to play this But..... the absolute lack of guiddance has killed it for me, cause i play games once a week and getting back to this was a nightmare i was always lost didnt know what to do where to go
So after playing it, it's basically Code Veronica or the old Silent hills In terms of camera and movement. Fixed camera mixed with follow camera. You do get Tank or modern controls just by using the directional pad or the left stick respectively.
Enjoyed the clever puzzle mechanics, the only down sides where, the main characters costume design, the lack of mocap facial animations and the janky animations. Given another 6 months would have been the best thing for it.
The main characters original costume was completely out of place. They brought in a second choice at the start with jeans which was a million times better.
Don’t think much of your review I picked this up soon at it came out on the PS4 and as I am a fan of silent hill and resident evil loved every minute of it the music the graphics the atmosphere the story the puzzles yes the map and talking is not brilliant but as a throw back to those old games it was brilliant just what I needed and I am still enjoying it too this day I just hope there is a tormented souls 2 some day I would give this 8 of 10 any day bye
I didn't save for 2 hours, had low ammo, injured, no health, got chased by a monster trying to find health, barely survived and picked health in the last moment, it was epic. Way better than RE8.
People that complain about the puzzles arent smart enough for this game. Intelligent problem solvers need games like this. Don’t hold my hand. Throw me to the lions.
Love the concept, but was very disappointed in the gameplay. Do i imagine an indie dev company worked hard on this? Sure, but I just didn’t enjoy the gameplay or care for the story to stay invested enough to work through progressing the many tedious moments in the game. Id even go as far to say it really felt like there was nothing to forward to that made me even want to solve the puzzles. It felt BAD bad, not even like a “campy b movie” bad for me to want to finish on. 3/10 game in my book.
hate save system.. other than that seems good game. Well saves I can prolly cheat. I play limited amount of times and if i cant save and lose hours of progress, then no thanks.
I just played another game in this genre (Signalis). Then I came across this game. Even though it has so many good things going for it. But I can't help to feel that Tormented Souls is trying to fit into a genre instead of becoming it. Signalis, on the other hand feels more like a game that happens to be a fixed camera survival horror, and it is first a good game before it's a survival horror. I m talking about Signalis since it is the reason that I tried Tormented souls. But I really feel like Tormented Souls is trying soooooo hard to be a tank control game that it feels too cumbersome and disorienting to play. I didn't even think that way when I played the Original Resident Evil and Silent Hill 2. Especially the camera; it literally switches like 7 times in the generator room. I can barely control the character at all. Even in normal sized rooms like the library, the camera switches so many times it takes me out of the experience.
I'm not...really sure...I want to...comment...because...everything I...say...seems a bit...hesitant...and unsure. let me...think...about it. Just to be...sure...maybe.
Did the same thing with Blasphemous. Owned for over a year only played it a handful of times. Coincidentally, I've finished Slain and Valfaris after I purchased Blasphemous.

@@moonsoon1038 If we didn't get sequels then we wouldn't have Resident Evil 2 (the best one), Silent Hill 2 (the best one), Red Dead Redemption 2, Half Life 2 etc. Etc.
There is nothing wrong whatsoever with sequels
@@moonsoon1038 yeah, or at least an entirely new setting. One if the strengths of the first couple of Resident Evil games was that they used different locations, different characters, and told different stories. The two games didn't negate the other for this reason. Resident Evil 2 may of been much better than the first, but the first was still very good and unique experience, because it was set in a creepy mansion as opposed to a creepy police station. It's different. Each game was worth playing even if you played the other.
finally a big channel talking about this game
If you play long enough, you get a flash light you can stick on your jacket.
Just told my boy about this.
He love this type of games.
He thanks you
Almost at the end now, gotta say I’m really loving the atmosphere!
This game should have had a more useful map. As it is, the map is virtually useless.
This game screams dedication and love, not to mention knowledge, for old school survival horror.
The puzzles should clearly have had an "Easy/Normal/Hard" mode. As should the combat..
Yea the puzzles are really challenging. I remember Silent Hill 2 having a difficulty setting for puzzles. This should really benefit from a similar feature. I feel the puzzles are like SH hard mode.
@@TomAnderson7 I agree. These puzzles would absolutely have benefited from a similar feature.
I am an old school fan of classic survival horror and the puzzles in this game are "TORMENTED", agreed, but the game gives you ALL THE TOOLS, HINTS AND INFO to solve them. I've been able to finish the game without any kind of guide. Greetings from Spain:)
This game has this strong retro re games and retro silent hill vibe to it. Definitely a love letter to the fans. I would highly recommend it.
Why weren’t you feeling well?
This game took me by surprise. Sure, it's clear it was made on a budget and it has it's issues but it's leagues better than any of the Western Silent Hill games. It's genuinely pretty unnerving and will scratch that SH itch in lieu of the real deal. I really hope this does well so the studio can stretch their wings a bit and continue with these types of games with even more polish.
They put so much effort into the environment just to slap a waifu on it lol. The game looks fantastic but the main character looks so out of place.
Like Fatal Frame games
Yo mama.
That’s what makes it tense and makes you stop and think before exploring a new area. The fact that dying has consequences
@@mattmas6628 You’re not wrong. It’s just the kind of thing that sometimes makes ne stop playing, when I really want to continue. And besides, today’s games condition you to get used to automatic saves. It’s jarring when all of a sudden, you don’t get them.
@@TVAlien That's *not* old school design..
Even Silent Hill 1 had autosaves after every single cutscene, in 1999! So you didn't have to do 30 minutes of combat and puzzle solving all over again. It was for all intents and purposes done, once you'd actually done it..
Try part 1 again, you'll see I'm right.
@@Stigmatix666 There was also Resident Evil that did not autosave. Is your point that not all games are the same and that not all games are for everyone? Because you're right.

I loved Eternal Darkness and The Thing, I would love to see spiritual successors of those.
Hey man, just bought the switch physical copy. Although I’m only 20 minutes into it, it functions wonderfully. Visuals, lighting and general performance seem real good for the switch version. Obviously the detail is a tad down from consoles, but a worthwhile pickup!
I have just got this bad boy going to wait until it gets dark to play it. I love these kind of games 😈.
I kinda love the wooden voice acting...very much like the first RE
How is it on PS4? I've only seen it played on PS5.
No bugs on PS4. But every complaint relating to clunky gameplay is relevant.
@@Stigmatix666 Thanks... I forgot all about this gem. 👍🏽
I bought it today for 29$ and it's worth every penny. Every game has flaws so put your grown man on and DEAL WIT IT
i didn’t get to play this at launch due to not having next gen consoles or a pc, so i’m just now getting to play and i am hooked. i’m having so much fun my only complaint is that it crashed on me and i literally just did a big junk of the game which i’ll have to do again and hopefully i’m able to retrace every step i did 😕 but other than that i’m truly enjoying my experience it’s definitely not a triple A title, but that does not (for me) take away from it 10/10 would recommend ☺️
Is this on PS4 I don't see it on the ps store???? But I really want to buy it
It is now
This is what the resident evil remakes should of been, while I love them, this scratched an itch that I havent had scratched in a very long time.
Do I fight the enemies or run? I can pump 3k nails into one but it still moves
@@big.atom37 bro or sis thank you many times over 💪
@@big.atom37 i thought this was way better than song of horror.
I like the environments and visuals but the girl looks completely out of place, like some anime character pasted in...

Little Nightmares 1&2
RE1 Remake, The Evil Within 1&2, Daymare 1998, Amnesia and Soma if you're into fps horror
It's only 20 $ anyway!
Ohhhh man. I would smack my mother in the face for an Eternal Darkness sequel.
The movement with analogic joystick is a little off
Ok wait it should be a preview. The game hasn’t been released yet. What’s the release date of this game

I enjoy a good puzzle. Can I have an average completion time please?
@@patrickraftery1815 I beat the game recently took me about 8hrs. I loved the puzzles. I just with there were more hints. Because sometimes I was completely lost. An example is the floppy disk puzzle to get the codename. I still like the concept. The puzzles seem silent hill inspired.

Am I the only one finding it odd every time he says "fixed camera angle"?
Fixed camera is thing. Its a term in the videogame space. Why not say what it is
How is it odd? The camera literally looks like it was fixed on the ceiling in most rooms and rotated around as it follows your character.
@@Lee86THUNDER it’s a cinematic camera angle?

There’s actually plenty of of save game tapes throughout the game, got like 13 or more
This review seems to imply that the disorientation caused by switching camera angles and the slow clunky combat are nostalgic features that could have done with being left behind.

Now just to wait for the last gen versions to come out next year.
Playing this game reminds me alot of old school Resident Evil and silent Hill way back on the PlayStation 1
are the cameras fixed though?
So after playing it, it's basically Code Veronica or the old Silent hills In terms of camera and movement. Fixed camera mixed with follow camera. You do get Tank or modern controls just by using the directional pad or the left stick respectively.

The whole limited saves thing is sething that i usually stay away from...
There's no limited saves here..
