    As a fair-weather-only dinghy sailor I have huge admiration for you Roger!

    another brilliant glimpse into a world I'll probably never see for myself, it's awesome to live vicariously through you for a short while Roger, thanks for for that. you might consider turning off the auto focus on your camera (if possible) for shots through the rain spattered windows :)

    have been very inspired (having read your books, website and watched your videos) by your considered approach and confidence in modifying and building your pocket ocean boats, thank you to your sharing of it all too. Since acquiring 3 years ago, "Chuckle" (1954) a wooden clinker folkboat build interestingly by the same hands that built "Jester" in 1953. having bought her for a song as an uncompleted restoration project we have had loads of fun as a family fixing her and sail cruising with her for 3 summers now, our last trip was 27 day round the firth of the forth, i know you could go along way in that time, but as you are only too aware coastal sailing is all about not getting upset with the weather and we have two small children now 7 and 9 who are in charge, we love the sense of adventure and the intimacy we make with our local waters, every year increasing our horizons step by step.
    I thought you might be entertained by our adventure video. link: th-cam.com/video/VHRdcyVNaJk/w-d-xo.html

    Maybe for your next boat, you can Mingming II a Westsail 32 or similar. A few more creature comforts / room for provisions and an engine. Do you have a SSB radio on board? Weather Fax? Thanks for the videos.

      No SSB radio, no weather fax. 32' would be too big for my taste. Small, simple and easily manageable is my preference. The Mingmings will take 100 days of provisions, which seems enough for most voyages.

    fantastic, thanks for sharing this Roger. Curious to know why your wind pilot gear looks to have a lashing on it?

    Passage making in fog can be a right strain on the eyes and you will have a routine for keeping watch, having a good scan round every so often perhaps every 10 mins in areas of shipping around shetland but as you go further north do you relax this some what Rodger?

    A fabulous voyage, boat going well. How do you obtain weather information?

    • @junkming
      @junkming  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Without being facetious - I look out of the hatch. Don't even have a barometer on Mingming II - waste of time and weight. In a small slow boat on a wide ocean you are going to get what you are going to get. If you can't handle it then better not be there in the first place. So-called 'weather routing' for such small boats is a nonsense. Close to the UK I can get the Shipping Forecast, but generally don't bother - too inaccurate. I refer here strictly to ocean sailing - for coastal sailing weather information is of course important.

      Thank you, Roger, that is very interesting. By the way, I copied your copper tubing idea for my dinghy spray hood.

    You can probably switch the camera to manual focus at infinity when filming through the windows and it'll do a reasonable job of blurring out the droplets.

    Roger, I have a couple of questions. Awesome adventures btw. Thanks for sharing.
    1. How many panels do you have up in these videos? Are you typically reefed with two in?
    2. Are those large yellow and red bins recycled from something. They look sturdy and of a good size for provisions.
    Thanks, again.

    • @junkming
      @junkming  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 So far the panels vary between 1.5 and 6. 3 to 4 panels is fairly normal in brisk conditions
      2. The yellow bins are recycled flare containers, so sturdy and watertight.

      As for the lashing, what you can probably see is the red line that is used to raise the pendulum blade out of the water when necessary.

    Cool ! I just looked up almost exactly where you are, to the minute, on satsig.net, when I tried to Google 66 degrees 33 minutes North, handy URL to have as I follow your journey.

    What kind of camera do u recommend, ur voice is nice and clear but i can hardly hear the water rushing past or many other boat noises , and do u use 32 gb SD cards or something differnt and do u have a laptop and inverter or not?
    Are u saying 6 or 7 beaufort?

    Hi Roger,
    What sort of chain clamp do you have on the tiller for the self steering? Where did you get it?

    • @Aasn9
      @Aasn9 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Windpilot from Germany. I invested in one myself after hearing Roger praise them in one of his earlier adventures in Mingming. They come with all the accessories including tiller attachments you can see in the vid.

    Any desire to go through the Canadian NorthWest Passage?
    Good job mate!

      I did sail up the Davis Strait a few years ago but had to turn back after breaking a rib. The NW Passage itself is not really feasible for a singlehanded sailor in an engineless boat - I like plenty of sea room.

    not to get too hippy with you sir, yet the day didn't change, your attitute or manner of looking upon 'the day' was altered.. not by the pilot whales per say . yet by your joy for hearing,seeing and accompaning each other . Before them you could of welcome the weather with more welcome,tweaking your outlook just a bit = presto,beautiful day !
