Absolutely correct 👌 that's basically what i ended up with as well.
If the x0.6 beast grip is not wide enough, there is a heavier Sony x0.7 camcorder converter that's looking very nice ( but rare).
But i went the DIY C-mount route to get more light in and to lern more about cams ...the 1080 120FPS is actually super fun with a fast lens .

It seems that Beastgrip no longer sells this lens. Does anyone know if there are good alternatives to this?

Unfortunately this lens is no longer available! I tried another with identical specs I had sitting around from years ago (think I used it on a Canon HV20, before Panny GH1 was out) but the corners aren't sharp at all. Worried other cheapies will have the same issue...

some stuff i stumbled over a while ago: going with slog2 & bumping saturation to +32 also can be an option. some don't use s-gamut on 8bit sony's as it's not "the real s-gamut" & go with itu709matrix.

Have you tried beastgrips 0.75mm wide angle lens yet? They no longer offer the 0.6

what are your thoughts on this camera vs the gopro on linear mode. This might be a bit softer but more pleasing image??

The RX0ii without any wide angle mod will still have a much narrower FOV than Gopro with linear mode because it's equivalent focal length is about 24mm if I recall correctly. Too narrow for most FPV applications so that is why the 0.6X wide angle adapter is key.
To compare with Gopro 10 or 11 though, the Sony RX0ii produces a more detailed image both in terms of image resolution and color detail (even if Gopro on paper has a higher resolution). The Sony is a better cinema platform because of the better color space (gradeability) and dynamic range (even if on paper the H11 has 10-bit color), Gopro 11 still looks like digital video unless you have a professional color grader work on it, and even then not all clips will turn out great.
The RX0ii on the other hand is much easier to edit, even I an amateur color grader can produce pleasing cinematic images.
A note on sharpness, I consider that to be a separate factor from resolution because you can just turn sharpness down on both cameras.

@@strawhatsam how do you color grade? (e.g. is there a LUT available or are you using some other method) I'm using Resolve, not sure what you're using. Just got an RX0 ii from Craigslist and took it for a walk in the woods (which as you know in the PNW is pretty dang dark right now) and surprised at how good the image looks, even with ISO bumped up.

@@strawhatsamYeah the reason the GoPro footage looks terrible is the GoPro stock lens is actually VERY soft and the way they get sharpness is through digitally sharpening it

Hey man found you rchannel the other day great stuff on here i've also been using the RXo ii for a couple years nows love this camera it has its quirks yes but it looks so much better then gopro i use the moondog anamorphic and really like it il have to try out this wide angle funny i also use the the same settings as you i come from a production backround and on a daliy shoot with our red cameras and sony fs7 i wish i could use the slog 2 but the 8 bit falls apart quick in coloring so thanks for this advise id love to see your 3d print mounting setup looks cool

Yes that is what I found too! With the s-log gamma profile you have to add soo much contrast and saturation in post that the 8-bit codec falls apart so it's better to record in-camera with a bit more contrast and saturation to begin with so you don't have to add it all back in again. Even then, I am surprised by how much you can stretch the colors and gammas of this footage though, it's quite impressive! Plus the Minimum 1000 ISO with Slog2 is a real pain and introduces a lot of noise in the dark areas and requires super dark ND filters.

How good is it campare to Gopro 11?

  • @Pereezd123
