I met Chaka Khan in early 80's when she played at New Orleans Jazz Fest at Fair Grounds - where I am from - me and my best friend were back stage - Chaka was sitting on a table - me and my buddy was taking pictures of her - she asked if we wanted to take picture together with her - LIKE REALLY!!!! So she posed with both of us and gave us each a Kiss on the Cheek - I did not wash my face for like 2 weeks.... Lol.... Love you Chaka!!!!
Beautiful woman, she said she has always been shy since childhood in a documentary I saw about her and from this video it seems to be true, the constant hand tics and movements are very common within shy people.
WHAT is wrong about this video that would make ANYONE do a thumbs down ??? People NEVER cease to amaze me. This is a awesome opportunity to see a glimpse of the past and enjoy an interview with a LEGENDARY ICON.
I'm so sad... so many of the icons I grew with are gone now. Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Dick Clark, Michael Jackson. sad. Thanks 4 the memories! Wow...
Fast forward and there are many more to add to the list. RIP to Prince,Denise Matthews,Natalie Cole,David Bowie, Nicholas Caldwell of the Whispers,Maurice White of Earth,Wind & fire,BB King,Walter Becker of Steely Dan,Chuck Berry, Billy Paul,Dennis Edwards of the Temptations,Joni Sledge of Sister Sledge, Brenda Jones of the Jones Girls. I know that there are others, but I cannot remember who they are.
Nonetheless, glad the beautiful Chaka Khan is still with us today- we are so blessed to have her! She's continually growing stronger than ever, even at 68 years young!. `°❤️💎👑
Because the fans are not voting, they nominated again this year but as of now12/21/19 they are in the last place, their fan base is black and no one is voting for them, that is why
The *"Gorilla"* reference (2:24) was a bit cringe.😲🙈🙄😯 If it was 2021 the broadcasting regulators (Ofcom & FCC) would have probably received a plethora of complaints! Nonetheless, glad it wasn't an issue ⚠️ and Chaka Khan is still growing stronger than ever, even at 68 years young! ❤️💎•👑
If Dick Clark were still doing interviews today (RIP) he would NOT have said that. He was masterful at what he did and kept up with trends. We wasn't a TV staple for decades and called America's Oldest Teenager for nothing. This is from 40 years ago... a very different time.
The irony of this video is that that was EXACTLY what was going on. Chaka wanted to leave Rufus badly by this point. The relationship was very strained. Chaka was wanting to focus more on her solo career however she was contractually obligated to return for this album and one more. The officially split in 1983 with their live concert album.
Chris Gilrath I was just gonna write what you wrote. Things were not a "family" at this point for R&CK. There were a lot of problems going on as a result of Chaka going solo and all.
Yes it did get better, many years later thou. There was talk around 1985 or 86 of them reteaming but it never happened. I believe at this point they are all ok with each other. Tony Maidien has also played some dates with Chaka in the past.
She really couldn’t. She was already accused of being the limelight. She let them shine. She knew she was about to jet and go full solo. She played her position!
Chaka! I like Stevie Nicks but I love Chaka a whole lot more. Fun fact: Chaka & Stevie had the same fashion designer who made their clothes back in the 80's.
Do u guys know how hard it is to have timing,, pace yourself, ask relevant questions, engage every member of the band, and entertain an audience under the pressure of a commercial break? Dick does all of this like he is drinking a glass of water.
I love Chaka. So it upsets me how cringey he handled this interview. Shout out to Chaka sticking up and standing up to the clearly passive undermining and offensive “jokes”
I always wondered if there were any egos involved here. (It's actually why I searched the interview.) I wanted to know more about the history of Rufus and Chaka Khan. And I wanted to see how they all interacted together.
JayTheAdviceGuy Some of the original member were mad because she started to get more attention and eventually, instead of being called Rufus, they became Rufus and Chaka Khan.
It wld be cool if Chaka Kahn and Stevie Nicks just did some kind of session together it aint to late.Plus both of them were labelmates Warner Brothers records
@@nycsongman9758 Dick Clark and Don Cornelius were major promoters of R&B music (back when it was actual music), but they were laughably poor interviewers. Dick Clark gets special credit for promoting black acts that hadn’t crossed-over, including ones that never did. I especially loved the Don Cornelius interview with Public Enemy, in which he could not contain his (well-justified) disdain for hiphop.
Oh brother. This group is not breaking up...This group is NOT breaking up. What?? RUFUS broke up ? (Dick Clark called them out on network TV! He knew because he has been in the business a long time- Even He Knew!)
Chaka is sooooo beautiful
yep she was 26 or 27
Chaka & all that HAIR! Beautiful voice; gorgeous hair.
I know, right? The hair, the voice.... she was/is on point!
CHAKA KHAN....IS SO AWESOMELY TALENTED.....AND AMAZINGLY...SO SHY, BEAUTIFUL AND "SO REAL"!!!!!
Dang, you're so right. I never realized how sizzling she was. She can sure 'nuff set my stuff on fire.
I've always admired her gorgeous mane!!!

What a Piece of art she is, good job GOD.
Beautiful woman, she said she has always been shy since childhood in a documentary I saw about her and from this video it seems to be true, the constant hand tics and movements are very common within shy people.
A I: Absolutely TRUE in Chaka's case, yet most people think she's always drunk or on drugs in every single video on TH-cam...
My eye is twitching as I read this
What are you a psycho
She’s such a beautiful woman
Great interview way back then and Chaka was beautiful then and contiues to be now!
I love the how loud she gets and how happy she sounds when singing
OMG GOD CHAKA KAHAN IS SO FINE THEN. SHE IS BEATIN UP THAT DRESS. GEUSS WHAT 2014 SHE'S STILL FINE.
David "Hawk" Wolinski: Brought that monster synth sound ("Hollywood", "Everlasting Love", "Ain't Nobody") to that already-badass Rufus sound.
It is a shame that David Hawk Wolinski doesn't get his just dues. He is seldom mentioned among the great soul writers and producers.
WHAT is wrong about this video that would make ANYONE do a thumbs down ??? People NEVER cease to amaze me. This is a awesome opportunity to see a glimpse of the past and enjoy an interview with a LEGENDARY ICON.
I didn't see any thumbs down.
That's why TH-cam quit showing the number count on Thumbs Down. . . too many assholes.
Wynette Gray all I can say is every one is not a fan simple as that.
Dick Clark talking 2 a Black Man he considers " big " & comparing him 2 a 500 hundred lb gorilla was EXTREMELY INSENSITIVE & NOT COOL AT ALL‼️

I miss them and so many others so much, when compared to the trash today.
How are they not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? (Her solo plus w/ Rufus?)
Because the fans are not voting, they nominated again this year but as of now12/21/19 they are in the last place, their fan base is black and no one is voting for them, that is why
Chaka was and still is beautiful. ❤️❤️❤️
Kevin Murphy was the only one who's played on every Rufus album....
I love how they still remained a group while doing individual things too without all of the jealous drama that breaks up a great team.
Superb band. Just absolutely hit it
Chaka was at the top of her game during this time....just like today's artists in 2014 and soon to be 2015.
Chaka ate that dress the fuck up 😍😍😍gorgeous
MASTERJAM; ...oh the parties...perfection!!!
3 years from this video Rufus and Chaka Khan would record Ain't Nobody for the 1984 movie Breakin. Greatness awaits them.
Movie Breakdance .
Chaka sounds and looks like the great late singer Vesta. So pretty.. Both sooo beautiful!!
Daaang Chaka lookin fine!
Chaka khan beautiful, Que en,élégant and iconic woman, lukres from Gabon
They appeared on AB Saturday, February 16th, 1980!!!
The great Bobby Watson on Bass... such an all around wonderful person
Bobby one of the best ever.

"That's Tony Maiden on guitar."
Camera cuts to the keyboard player.
Quincy Jones was on top in 1980. He was 4 years away from producing the best selling album of all time. Michael Jackson's Thriller!
Actually two years. Thriller came out Dec 1982.
Off the Wall being the first
Dick Clark could have done a much better job on that interview, and I wanted to hear more of what Chaka Khan had to say. A very interesting lady.
He called that black man a gorilla.

I would debate anyone who didn't believe Rufus & Chaka Khan was better than Fleetwood Mac. Chaka vs Stevie.
Chaka! I like Stevie Nicks but I love Chaka a whole lot more. Fun fact: Chaka & Stevie had the same fashion designer who made their clothes back in the 80's.
I’ve been saying the same thing!! Chaka casts spells too!

That's like saying this apple is better than that orange.... they are not comparable

It was just Rufus at first when she was with lead singer. Then they added her name to the title. Then she went solo.
Call me crazy if you want but Selena (RIP) looked like Chaka to me. They have like the same eyes. Chaka is so pretty!!!
She sure does
erubey8909 Now that you mention it, I see it...They really do, it's probably the Native blood in them.
Omg I’ve always said to myself she looks a lot like Selena but never told anyone because they would think I’m crazy lol
Tony DA Great Lol...I think it's the native blood they both share.
HoneyHoneyBaby oh yes indeed !!!! No doubt about that :)
Actually, Chaka Khan and some members used to FALL OUT in the studio. When you're under contract and in from of the camera - you have to smile
Lovely Chaka Khan

December 2021, She still can get it 😆 😆
This was around the Naughty album recording cause she looks like the album cover it was released in 1980.
Wow- that was an interview.

I've read it; sadly, Chaka doesn't seem to remember a helluva lot about Rufus' halcyon days.

The comparison to the 500 pound gorilla comments huh
Chaka kahn
Her speaking voice kind of sounds like Tina Turner
I could have not been in that band and not try to make Chaka my woman every damn day....

Dick Clark with the "Gorilla" reference to the brother on the guitar...smh... Closet bigot as they used to say back then...
That white host was rude and low key racist. Chaka was annoyed and caught his shade every time. She threw the shade back a bit as well. 💯

Does anyone know how you can watch this whole show with them on it?
