Bigkik - Dreams of Goa (Roland S-1 + J-6 + T-8)

  • Goa Trance from the mid 90s had a huge impact on me. I never had the chance to take part of psychedelic parties, but I remember clearly listening
    regularly to Patrick Rognant's "Rave Up" radio sets back in the days.
    Here is my humble take on classic Goa Trance from that period. The Roland Aira Compacts are imho perfect for that task with TB-303, SH-101 and Juno-60 emulations !
    Technical details :
    - The J-6 plays the bass line (preset 3-4),
    - The S-1 plays the randomized and arpeggiated pattern (square, saw and a little bit of sub osc),
    - The T-8 bass begins to plays in the 2nd half of the track.
    I used only these notes for all devices : C C# D# E G G# A#.
    S-1 is midi master. T-8 and J-6 are daisy chained.
    Original creation by Bigkik

    Awesome. With these three machines you basically can create a complete 4-track song, without the need for a DAW and lots of expensive stuff. Great composition.

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, 3 seems to be the minimum and I felt previously something was lacking with just the J-6 and T-8. The other strong point is that this setup plus a recording device (here a laptop) can be packed in a regular backpack and works on batteries !

    • @stofbug
      @stofbug ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigkik True. You can even take them with you on a holiday, if you want 😀. I’m curious if Roland got any other Aira Compacts planned and what kind of functionality they would add that is not in these 4 machines yet. I’m not really into sample based based stuff (yet), but something like that with granular synth functionality could be interesting. Something like the Koala Sampler app, but as a hardware device. Do you have something you would like to see?

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stofbug Personnaly I would like a sampler and a mixer. I really like the volca sample but it is a bit limited with only 16 steps per pattern. For the mixer I imagined pattern changes sending/chaining... more of a midi mixer than an audio one. FIngers crossed !
      Another great unit from Roland is the MC-101. It is cheaper than these 3 units, more powerfull but I feel less creative and spontaneous with it...

    • @stofbug
      @stofbug ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigkik Yes, a mixer also would be cool. Especially with a send effect option so I would be able to add my NTS-1 as a send effect unit.

    How did you get the extra snare variations . There’s one extra snare in sometimes but sound like it’s more than 32 beats .
    Is that from synching to the J6 or from different patterns on the s1 ?
    Hope that questions makes sense ,I’m new to this and tried to recreate the beat and baseline but had issues with that extra snare .
    Or is there a way to set the t-8 to 64 beats ?
    Anyway thanks ! Subscribed lots of cool vids !

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello,
      To do so I used probabilities in the T-8 on a few steps for snare, bass drum and hi-hats. Can't remember the steps and their values though. There is unfortunately no way to have more than 32 steps in each pattern...

    • @bigkik

      Thank you ! In this one the bassline is played by the J-6. I also did this "goa inspired" video previously without the S-1.
      If you mean how to construct the melody, i found really helpfull informations in this thread :

    facile a connecter ensemble ?

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bonjour,
      Il faut des cables mini-jack males stereo pour tranmettre les signaux audio et midi (je recommande de ne pas utiliser les E/S "sync" car le midi offre plus de fonctionnalités). Ensuite par défaut ils fonctionneront ensemble avec la synchronisation de la mise en marche, du tempo et des changements de pattern.

    How do you record the sound for a video?

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello,
      I record live while filming with my smartphone or a computer. In both case I use a beringher uca-222 interface. The audio signal comes in and is converted into USB audio. Depending on the recording device you use, you wil maybel need a program or an app that lets you configure audio options. For my android smartphone I use the "open camera" free app for nearly one year now and I am quite happy with it.

    Impressive!! How did you manage to stop the drums at 3:06? By changing the pattern on the S1?

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes exactly, I found out it was the easiest way to do so. The only drawback is to have the same exact pattern (in term of sound settings) on the other synths (here the S-1 and the J-6) to obtain a seamless transition.

    Between the S-1 and T-8, which do you prefer to use as master? I've seen you use both for this purpose.

    • @bigkik
      @bigkik  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It really depends. One thing worth considering is that if midi program changes are activated, the master will send them to the other units. If you want variations with one unit, it could be interesting to locate it at the end of the midi chain.
      For instance : if you have a melodic pattern looping with the s-1 and/or the j-6 and want drum variations, place the T-8 at the end : this way you can switch patterns on the T-8 and keep a melody looping. Only drawback is that if you have several melodic patterns you must set the same tempo on them. The T-8 is the only unit (so far) to have global tempo setting.
