    This is a short video about Zone focussing made SIMPLE - giving a quick and practical photography tutorial to help you use zone focussing in your photography.
    It's especially good for street photography, to help you to get the shot every time, without having to refocus between each shot.

    The other way of doing this, with manual lenses, is to select an aperture, say f/8, by turning the aperture ring until the 8 is under the red indicator. Then find the two 8 markings either side of the red indicator. Turn the focus ring until the infinity symbol is over the left-hand 8 and look at the number over the right-hand 8. It will be something like 7 feet - obviously the exact figure depends on the lens and the chosen aperture, but in this case it means that everything from 7 feet away to infinity should be in focus. Of course, some old lenses have lost their calibration for some reason and aren't accurate, so always switch your camera to Manual mode, use focus peaking as Chris suggests, in order to ensure it's in focus. (EDIT: On some old lenses, the infinity symbol is on the right and needs to be over the right-hand 8.)

    Zone focus is easier on manual lenses, in my experience. Some AF lenses allow you to lock focus, many do not, they are fly-by-wire and easily knocked from their position. Remember the wider the angle of view (or smaller the sensor format) the greater the depth of field, all other factors being the same.

    Thanks for inspiring me to use manual focus more 😊

    Really cool, there is so much more you can do with Fuji’s than most people think.

    I have tried to use it in the past and could never get it to work well for me, but you are easy to follow and very easy to set it up and I can't wait to try it out tomorrow. Thank you

    Some observations in no particular order:
    With Fuji lenses (and may be some other lens which report to the body aperture, focal length, focus distance) , Fuji camera bodies can display the sharpness range as a thin blue . However, there are two options for this setting: Film and Pixel. For normal use, the "Film" mode should be used.
    For a given sharpness range, the sufficient aperture varies with the focal length. f8 is often more than sufficient.
    In manual focus mode, it is convenient to use "zone focus" in combination with "back button focus" to quickly set the focus distance.

    Awesome! Was looking for a good explanation. Going to use it for my 18 mm f2, bought it secondhand on eBay, but the autofocus is slow

    Hi Chris, I love your videos. Your way of explaining things are so easy to understand. I have a question on zone focusing. I want to make sure if my understanding is correct: If the light conditions doesn't change I will not have to change the focusing ring while walking in the street provided that I always want the same zone to be in focus. Is that so?

    Thank you for the video.
    What always helped me to estimate distances was the comparison with known things.
    I can reach 0.6m with my arm. 2m width of my car...

    Hi Chris, I took delivery of my xt1 yesterday and like with all destruction manuals I found that they create more questions than they answer. Fortunately, I've been watching some of your videos and learned stuff about the Fuji cameras but also photography in general. I'm now subscribed so see you again soon.

    You inspired me to buy a used Fuji X-E2 camera body. I have both the X-T2 and X100F. I use my Fuji cameras for street photography. I am accustomed to using both cameras in S mode, with back button AutoFocus. This works great for me - especially the X-T2. What is the secret for making the X-E2 conform to this same shooting arrangement?

    Do I understand this right that this only works well a) in bright light and b) if you know before hand how far that sudden event will be at c) your good at guessing distances?

    I used manual Pre-focus with my X-Pro1, aperture stopped around F5.6 for a Race event day, and didn't miss an action shot.
    Who says you can't shoot sports with Fuji Mirrorless cameras? (I didn't know it was called zone focusing though)!

    Nice.
    That blue line doesn't appears in fuji cameras when i use manual lenses like 7artisants. Is that right?

    • @ArrOShooter
      @ArrOShooter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats correct , there is no electronic connection on manual or vintage lenses , however mostly there is a scale on the lens what you can use.

    • @hudster1969
      @hudster1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What ArrOShooter says. However if your 7Artisans lens is like mine the distance markers are out of alignment so best to test around the house/garden before using in anger.

    Clear info. Bell way too loud😁. Zone focusing works well w/adaped lenses where you can read the depth of focus scale on the lenses themselves. Blue DoF for Fuji cams can be somewhat difficult to make out when zone is not deep. Lotta posts lately - been busy, eh? Have you ever contacted any of the photo e-mags like PetaPixel or F-Stoppers to see if they would cover any of your YT segments - especially tutorials? Not sure who makes the first contact, but it could be a good way to quickly boost subs. Cheers!

    Doesn’t particularly works very well with some third party lens.

    acceptable focus... not killer sharp on everything in that entire zone... people expect more than physics are going to deliver... good description tho
