- Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Special Thanks to Milikovic Fisico
Materano is a dialect of Neapolitan spoken in Matera, a historic city in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. It belongs to the Italo-Romance linguistic family and shares features with both Neapolitan and Apulian languages due to Matera's geographical position between these linguistic areas. Materano is characterized by distinct phonetic shifts, lexical borrowings, and grammatical structures that differentiate it from standard Italian. The dialect reflects the city's rich cultural heritage, influenced by Greek, Latin, Arabic, Norman, and Spanish historical presences. While still spoken by locals, especially the older generations, Materano-like many regional dialects-is gradually declining in use due to the dominance of Italian in education, media, and formal settings.

This is way more similar to apulian, I can’t understand it even if I know the dialect of Cilento which is closer to the one of Basilicata (as this one). I really think that for the amount of vowel modification apulian should be considered a language separately from neapulitan. They’re basically like galician and european portuguese, they started as the same then they just went their own way with phonetics
