There’s our answer: Curtis has given her best performances in “genre” films and the academy still clearly has a bias against even great performances in genre films. The day she plays an abusive, alcoholic mother in a total dramatic film she’d be a nominee already. Hopefully, EEATT will break that streak and tradition.

Agreed. Original Halloween to me is the ultimate slasher and I always thought the Halloween reboot did an excellent job of exploring how trauma still affects people decades after it happens. Anthony Hopkins is the closest I've seen anyone come to winning an Oscar for a horror film as Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs and even then, they had to call it a "psychological thriller."

ANGELA was snubbed again last night. NO i love Jamie Curtis but she is not Angela Basset. They gave it to her because she was not going to ever get nominated again for anything. Jamies work is good but she is not great. Angeal Basset is great.

She kind of played a psychotic role like that, A film called Mothers Boy in the 90s... One of the rare films she's a villain in and imo one of her top 5 performances ever. But the movie gets underrated as a "Hand that rocks the craddle" knock off. But she's still marvelous in it

If the Oscars put their bias to one side they'd see Curtis has been delivering for years, her work in Freaky Friday is the equal to any dramatic suffering part that gets awarded every year.
She probably got very close with True Lies.

It's so much fun looking back at this video and hearing the sorta skepticism that she even gets nominated and knowing in hindsight that she actually won. Also that your definition of Everything Everywhere "overperform[ing] in every way" was 6, 7, or 8 nominations when it would end up getting 11 and winning 7. It truly was a phenomenon wasnt it!

I wished she had gotten a nom for Knives Out. It’s ridiculous how many times she’s been passed over. Does the Academy not like her enough to give her one single nom? Here’s hoping she finally gets one, and one day finally wins 🤞.

Any jamie Lee Curtis fan should watch her performance in Scream Queens. She has an iconic shower scene that always made a homage to her mother. It was also so funny and that scene is relatively quick.
Especially if Margot Robbie doesn't submit for Best Supporting Actress(because of Michelle Williams fiasco) than I think she should be a front runner/deserving of at least a nomination

  • @jhhone
    @jhhone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Yes, "Everything Everywhere" will be Curtis' first Oscar nomination! She's incredible in the role! I agree with you that she came close several times to be a contender! Did you know that her comedy series "Anything But Love" was the only series not to be canceled by the network but by the studio who produced the show. Hadn't happened before hasn't happened since!

Thank you for making this tribute (I think this should help to debunk the idea that she did not deserve to win her Oscar because of who her parents and God parents were; she won because of nearly 5o years of hard work ,being ignored , taken for granted, and patronized. The best reaction to the flack, that I have seen, came from Angela Bassette's co star in What's Love Got To Do with it, Laurence Fishburne. He was not angry or sanctimonious, he felt that Bassette's night will come, and equally important, he said he was happy for Jamie Lee Curtis)!

For me, she hasn't really gotten the Academy's attention because she doesn't seem to go for a lot of roles and films that the Academy would take notice of and say is worthy of a nomination. As others have said, most of the times she's really "gone there" have been in some of the horror roles she did. But even then, I wouldn't necessarily call her acting in those as "Oscar worthy". The closest I'd say to a role like that she could've been nominated for is A Fish Called Wanda (considering her co-star Kevin Kline WON for Supporting Actor that year, you could argue getting her in there too). She is a talented actress who can work well in both comedic and dramatic roles. But based on the roles I've seen her take, it doesn't really seem like going for an Oscar is that much a priority for her. Or if she ever were to be nominated, I doubt it'd be because she was actively going for it.

    Lol 😂
I’m watching this well AFTER I saw her win for Everything Everywhere all at once!
All I knew her for was mainly for Freaky Friday & True Lies.
Now, I still think that Stephanie Hsu should have won, BUT I’m soooo glad Curtis got the Oscar. I’m glad the movie itself got the award and won big!
Everything everywhere all at once was EASILY Amy favorite movie of 2022.
If I had a ranked ballot I would have ranked it like this.
    1. Stephanie Hsu for everything everywhere all at once
    2. Jamie Lee Curtis for everything everywhere all at once
    3. Angela Bassett for Black Panther
    4. Hong Chau for The Whale
    5. Kerry Condon for the Banshees of Inisherin
    Congratulations Jamie Lee Curtis!!!

Her dance scene in True Lies was misogynistic???
That was the point of the scene. She was pretending to be a hooker dancing for a guy who just liked to watch.

As I watched the Oscars this year, I realized that every actor who _won_ did so in a role that downplayed their beauty. In retrospect, the same was true of Charlize Theron for _Monster._
In an industry that thrives on _image, youth, and beauty,_ it's a big risk to willingly play _ugly_ or _plain_ or _old,_ but every winner in 2023 was a multi-decade industry veteran, who...for some if not all of their Oscar-winning performance...looked like hell. Of course, they each _also_ portrayed the entire gamut of human emotion in a single film, so...there's that.
P.S. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. In particular, I now have to re-watch (yet again) _A Fish Called Wanda_ and _True Lies_ and _Knives Out_ and (of course) _Trading Places._

A Fish Called Wanda would have been a perfect film for her to be nominated for. Kevin Kline won the Academy Award and John Cleese was nominated for writing, which I think he should have won for, it would have been cool to see Jamie Lee Curtis up for Best Actress. John Cleese was great, but I think Best Actor was a bit crowded for him to be nominated at the Oscars and that was defiantly Dustin Hoffman’s year for Rain Man, but the writing deserved the nomination. Unfortunately, since Curtis has done a lot of Genre films, the Academy usually ignores those films and doesn’t always acknowledge those who are great when expanding beyond such films.

I'll tell you why she won. She campaigned for it on social media. But not for herself, per se. She posted nothing but positive, supportive pictures and posts of her cast mates and the movie, but not too many so as to be annoying, right up to that Sunday night. It was a brilliant public relations campaign that kept her on everyone's mind, but not in a way that was calling attention to herself. And I say, "Well done."

I love that when you're about to say something that makes you angry your pitch goes up 🤭 I feel you, those Oscar voters make me angry almost every year too. Jamie Lee is such a nice person, she's loved by her peers, she's friends with lots of them. She's funny, a quality I think she got from her dad. You know better than I the record the academy has with comedy actors. It didn't happen for her with "A fish called Wanda" or "Knives Out", don't think it'll happen with "Everything.." , that movie is a huge hit with critics but not a massive audience hit. In my country it flopped at the box office. She may get lucky at the Critics Choice Awards with a supporting nomination and at SAG for ensemble, but that's about it in my opinion. Also, that movie came out too early in the year, you know the drill 🤨

Curtis is amazing! She should have been nominated by now, but the academy never rewards actions outside of technical categories, almost never rewards horror and rarely rewards comedy. She doesn’t have a chance for EEAAO - if it gets supporting, it will go to Hsu. Yeah will be nominated I think. But Curtis has the love and admiration of the audience.

I am forward to it. Her best film role may be in the Manchurian candidate, but she had impossible odds against her this year - Patty Duke. However Death on the Nile - she was amazing and not even nominated. She should have won against Maggi Smith this year (I have seen California suite). Interestingly, M. Smith was also in Death on the Nile (that film is great in my opinion).

I actually watched Halloween (1978) for the first time in my life this weekend. I didn't find it scary at all, I was very surprised. xD There wasn't even any blood on the knife after Micheal used it to stab the teenage boy, or Curtis used it to stab him while in the closet. It was nice, haha

Honestly for the 1995 Oscars Curtis should’ve taken Jodie Foster’s slot for Nell because Nell isn’t that great of a film and it’s very generous to say that Jodie Foster was the lead cause Natasha Richardson and her male co-star were the leads. I can also say similar with Miranda Richardson’s film Tom and Viv. It barely got nominated for awards and made nothing at the box office. Critics and audiences hated Tom and Viv. And it just seems like Miranda Richardson’s performance was forgettable compared to Jodie Foster’s as Nell cause Jodie does give a good performance.

Another actress I feel is long overdue for an Oscar would be Michelle Pfeiffer. While she doesn’t have the numbers of Adams or Close, her 3 nominations are great performances (and in my opinion she’s been snubbed of at least a nomination more than a few times)

While I do agree that Jamie has had some iconic roles, I disagree with the idea that she 'deserves' a nom/win now 'just because'. The fact is that back when she was being nominated for awards, it was a time of MERIT, and the BEST won. The excuse that she was not nominated because they were unsure of which category she should be nommed in was stupid. We see from Ms. Weaver's noms in BOTH best actress (Aliens) and best supporting actress in the SAME year that it is no difficulty on their part to figure out the category. Sorry, but as it was it other greats before her (Barbara Stanwyck and Roselyn Russell) Jamie is just going to have to settle for the 'life time achievement' award they GIVE to those who do great, but unrecognized jobs in Hollywood.

I was fine with the nomination, but the win? It’s a legend/nepo/swept up in EEAAO win that, IMHO, kind of cheapens the awards. And I’m a huge horror fan and genuinely like her. But the performance? It’s just not there. Id’ve gone with Kerry Condon. Your thoughts, Brian??

I was shocked Jamie won HELL Jamie was shocked she won. The fact that she was even nominated was a shocker. Jamie Curtis acting is good but that is it she is no Angela Basset. Most of America did not see Halloween the final movie it slunk out of theaters grossing 64 million world wide. Angela Basset in black panther2 858 million world wide. As for her performance most of the audience were moved to tears.... yeah!

@@My2CentsYall I'm sorry but had Angela won it would have been same like Jamie's. A CAREER LEGACY WIN. Angela was good but nothing screamed "Oscar performance". Also, Jamie can open films, Angela cannot. Black Panther is a Marvel film not Angela film. The only reason people started thinking about Angela's Oscar was that two non industry awards Golden Globes and Critics Choice gave her win as those two shows are desperate Oscar predictors. Golden Goldes additionally gave her because of the Black voters controversy to shrugg off the racist claims. In short both would have been lagacy wins, but EEAAO was super strong so it helped Jamie. I'm super happy for Jamie because she is team player, always praising others. Unlike Angela who thrashed Holly Hunter and now Jamie's win with her behavior. But I hope Jordan Peele or some pther black director casts hercin a great movie so that she can win in 2026.

@@moviemarvel7450 I politely disagree her movies all of this time are good that is it. She has been in good films and has done good work she does not stand out in any of her works. I do not know what you mean by open film do you mean lead role because Angela has done that in many films "how stella got her grove back"," supernova" just off the top of my head. AB is more versatile than jamie lee. Let say this Jamie lee Curtis was nominated for a film EEAAO acronym a film nobody even knew she was in. A film that had moderate success at the box office. People are getting tired of OSCAR they do some foul shaite to people. The golden globes got it right, the academy (her peers) got it right but not the Oscar. Look its f up they did not even follow the rules of oscar, film gross, consistency, notoriety. People are not watching this crap anymore because the stuff the committee does. We know this was jamies last chance to get one it does not mean she deserve it for that ONE performance.

@@My2CentsYall Jamie Lee curtis has been a box office pull. Angela is a flop. Black Panther is not hit because of her. EEAAO was heavily pushed by Jamie Lee Curtis' box office pull. Jamie was cast for that readon. Jamie promoted the hell out of that film. Good performances win Oscars all the time, you don't need to give Sophie's Choice level acting to win Oscars all the time. Someone you can win Oscar for decent performances. Jamie too has been snubbed 3 times before at the Oscara yet she never showed her jealousy or arrogance like Angela. So STFU.

How funny, I was watching A Fish Called Wanda the other day and couldn't for the life of me figure why that wasn't at least nominated. For me the biggest and only reason is genre bias. Jamie tends to do a lot of comedy and horror, which the academy notoriously snubs and overlooks, but Jamie has proven time and again the academy's stupidity and bias, where countless performances of hers have gone overlooked.
