    ♥️ Thank you, I adore Sigourney. It’s interesting that Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver, where classmates at Yale Drama School, at Yale Streep was the golden child, adored by her teachers/mentors, hailed by her peers. She stepped out of Yale and right onto the stage at Lincoln Center, earning immediate praise from the New York theatre community and propelling her into an awarded acting career. Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver toiled in the shadows. Unable to win lead roles in school productions (the Yale teachers called her "talentless") which had a huge affect on her confidence. After Yale, Weaver auditioned and auditioned in her native Manhattan, like most young performers taking whatever jobs she could get. It wasn't until Ridley Scott cast her in his inauspicious sci-fi horror film Alien that her career took off. Both women are individually talented and unique.

    Sigourney is my all-time favorite actress by a long shot. She was nominated 3 times for the Oscar and she deserved to win three times. I'm still mad they didn't nominate her for Copycat (1995), The Ice Storm (1997), A Map of the World (1999), Imaginary Heroes (2004) and specially Snow Cake (2006) where she played a high-functioning autistic woman. Stellar performances! Sometimes I think these "academics" just have something against her. Just like they didn't nominate Madonna songs because it was Madonna. Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder, Nastassja Kinski and Glenn Close are another criminally underrated actresses by the Academy.

      Sigourney was great in Aliens, but that was the only deserving oscar win she could have. Her performance is very good in Working Girl, but she wasn't better than Geena Davis (she was the perfect balance of supporting and lead), but she wouldn't deserve against Meryl and Glenn. By the way, Jodie won that year, and only because of the rape scene. Her work was still better than Sigourney.

    I adore Sigourney Weaver. Her performance in Aliens is a favourite for a reason - she projects resilience, grit, maternal compassion, fear. Ripley is the ultimate action hero precisely because Weaver grounds her as a real, lived-in presence. Taken out of context, 'Get away from her you bitch' could be a silly, throwaway one liner. But it's totally deserved, and Weaver's delivery of that line (and in the context of everything the character has gone through) is one of the most exhilarating, punch the air moments of 80s cinema.
    Also, every interview snippet (and her Golden Globes acceptance speeches in particular) confirm what we already knew - that she's a true class act. Love her ❤

I know she was disappointed when she lost to Davis for supporting actress in 1989. She had an expectation to win since it worked out that way previously with Jessica Lange, Teresa Wright, Fay Bainter and the two nominations in one year. She said her parents came with her, so she was kinda bummed for them. The look on her face when she loses to Davis was like oh well damnit lol. For decades, Viven Leigh's Scarlett O'Hara has been called the 'greatest female screen heroine in cinema' - but history is proving out that Sigourney Weaver's Ripley holds the title. Her '87 Oscar loss mirrors Peter O'Toole's loss for _Lawrence Of Arabia_ (as well as his subsequent career losses), and like O'Toole, Weaver will likely win an honorary Oscar at some point but not a straight win - no present day nom will be ever enough to acknowledge an actor who has long since transcended the award's inherent value & fickle pageantry. Oscar favorites & wins are ephemeral - there are winners and there are icons of the medium - Weaver (as Ripley) is the latter. Oscars are given to honor those who climb the mountain with rare & extraordinary excellence, sometimes to honor those who expertly endure the climb itself (like Jeff Bridges) - but there is little inclination to honor those who are already sat upon the mountaintop. That's Weaver.
    _The Ice Storm_ was an outlier because it was an unusually brilliant performance that offered a new side of Weaver - should've been an easy nom & win (Basinger was a headscratcher). Cool to see someone remembers Weaver's incredible, bold turn in _Snow White._

    I ruined the day. It burns my eyes. I read that it is a characteristic of some eyes that they suddenly light up. Ever since I admired Sigourney. And didn't I notice the narrowing of her eyes until now? Shines as they say: the sun shines through the clouds. I have loved the sun ever since. Made peace with the day. This was also given by Sigourney's mysterious power. Eternal May and June. Sigourney is blooming spring and summer.

    If you think about it, 1988 was a killer for actresses, the nominees were fire in both categories - and yet, while both eventual winners are wonderful actresses, the result is a bit disappointing. Thinking it could've been Glenn and Sigourney. Or Melanie and Michelle, mix it up as you wish.

  • @mnpollio
    @mnpollio ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Weaver's loss for Working Girl was inexcusable. It had long been the tradition that when an actor/actress copped Best Performer and Best Supporting nods, then they would at least walk away with the supporting Oscar. The fact that they changed tradition on her was appalling since she was the odds on favorite to win in the supporting category. Afterwards, the prevailing wisdom was that Geena Davis won because hers was a lead performance masquerading as a supporting performance and Joan Cusack's co-nomination from Working Girl helped cancel out Weaver. Rubbish! I normally enjoy Davis, but she was miscast. Muriel is supposed to be dowdy and unattractive, but Davis is radiant and model beautiful. When the cast in her film keep asking Bill Hurt what he sees in her - you're like "Huh? Are you blind?" By contrast, Weaver's performance was a veritable text book on what an award worthy supporting role should be: 1) it was really a supporting role and 2) when she is off screen, you cannot wait for her to return.

  • @hernar2
    @hernar2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It should have been Sigourney Weaver for BSA and Glenn Close for BA that year. Geena Davis role on The Accidental Tourist was a leading role. The Academy wanted to award her and the only way to do it was to nominate her in the supporting role.

    I think that a factor that isn’t mentioned is Siskel and Ebert. They may have just been movie critics to some, but they were THE movie critics. Hollywood listened to them. Having your film get two thumbs up really meant something. Siskel and Ebert really thought that Geena Davis deserved to win and were very vocal about it.

Sigourney now seems more just ubiquitous and using name recognition thanks to blockbusters from decades ago to still get work in Hollywood. But never say never.
