    Have a look at Thomann’s own brand bass recorder with me.
    At just £89 (or thereabouts at time of filming), the Thomann TRB-31B is the cheapest bass on the market, but is it any good?
    This is not a sponsored video, and all opinions are honest, and my own!
    The recorder can be found on Thomann’s website, here:
    www.thomann.de...
    I play a bit of Stranger on the Shore by Acker Bilk, so you can hear how the instrument sounds.
    If you’re a fan of the recorder, you can always subscribe to my channel, there are lots of recorder videos coming up, don’t miss a thing!

    I've had the Thomann bass for a couple of years and am quite happy with it. The Yamaha has a tighter, cleaner sound, but I actually like the soft diffuse sound of the Thomann. You play it really well!

      Thanks! One of the things I’m interested to see is how well the bass holds up over time; there must be hope if you still like yours after a couple of years! I love the soft sound of both the Thomann bass and alto, it has character 🙂

    I like the Airy aspect of this recorder's sound. Although it might be a 'cheap' sound. I play the yamaha tho and I envy the looks (and sometimes the sound) of the thomann. Keep it up!

    • @ClaythorpeMusic
      @ClaythorpeMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, exactly, it can be a perfectly pleasant sound, even if it is cheap! I’d like to get it side by side with a Yamaha for a proper comparison… but I probably shouldn’t buy it just for that 😅

    I got a cheap bass recorder off of Amazon (different brand, same cheap keys) and I've finally solved problem of the bendy keys! Looking from the top of the instrument, take a small piece of moldable putty and build up the left side of the foot-joint enough so that keys can't slip out of the channel. Also, super-gluing a wire under they key-pad and down the length makes it slightly less flexible (Just don't super-glue the key to the body!)

    Thanks for the review of the thomann bass! I think I'm going for the more expensive yamaha. But, well, nice playing. I'm also a kind of beginner searching for my instrument. I play an electronic instrument, akai ewi usb, but I want a real instrument, to be able to feel its vibration, its life?, when I play it. Thanks again.

  • @CrashLandon1

    You missed a joke opportunity at 3:50. "Remember, I'm a complete bass beginner. I've only been playing it for three, maybe four weeks, on and off, when I get a chance. So, don't try this at home!" :rimshot:
    I very much enjoy your videos. I started watching others' videos before I discovered yours, and, to b honest, I like your instrument reviews better. Some others, I think, tend to review with the critical ear of a professional who's shopping with performing in mind, while you're a fellow recreational player/learner, for whom "good enough" is good enough, and who doesn't need a concert instrument. The problem with the seventh-hole key is of interest to me, but I couldn't care less if it wouldn't be mistaken for wood, as long as the notes are true.
    I look forward to many more videos from you! And tell the pup that I said, "Good dog!" (They like that.)

    Well, I ordered one of these based on your review. Never thought I'd want to play the bass, I can't even finger the tenor effectively (I can finger the alto ok, I just play it badly anyhow). But hey, for that price, and since it's apparently easier than a tenor, I figured I'd give it a try. Enjoying your vids, thanks! (Except it depresses me that you play that well after only such a short time... oh well.)

    • @ClaythorpeMusic
      @ClaythorpeMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooooh I hope you like it! The keys do make the reach much easier. For the price I reckon it’s a great way to get into basses… problem is there’s no cheap alternative for the next size, ha! I’m glad you enjoy the vids, thank you (and I just spend far too much time practicing!).

  • @Drenalim

    Thanks for the Review. How does the loudness in general compare to a Tenor? I am currently learning Tenor and love it, but the upper register are putting a lot of stress on my ears. So i wondered how much quiter the Bass Recorder is and whether it would be a good idea to make the switch.

    • @ClaythorpeMusic
      @ClaythorpeMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, interesting question. When I first played the bass, my husband instantly commented on how loud it was. But definitely not piercing. It’s quite a big and full sound, but obviously lower than the tenor, so easier on the ears, I’d say. But then I’ll happily listen to the soprano for hours! The higher notes on the bass sound softer than the higher register on the tenor, to me 🙂

      Hi Maggie! Thank you 😊 The Aulos Symphony bass is one I don’t know much about, I’m afraid. They don’t seem to be readily available in the UK. I hope it arrives quickly for you, I’d love to know how you get on with it!

      @MagSanJon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I’ve had my Aulos bass for about a week and love it. It’s well made but heavy and I’m struggling a bit to figure the best way to hold it. (Sitting down, with bottom resting on my crossed ankles; standing with strap; using crook or blowing directly) I’m 5’2 and have to stretch more than just my fingers to reach with my right arm 😳 but I’m determined to do a few minutes each day after my alto practice.

      @ClaythorpeMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MagSanJon I’m glad it arrived safely! I think your ‘few minutes a day’ approach sounds good. I bet in a few weeks you’ll be used to it and wonder how you ever struggled to hold it! Good luck!

    @dreamer9127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for reviewing this bass! Lovely playing!! Would someone with small hands have a hard time? I am completely unable to play tenor, and even some alto models are a bit of a stretch for me. For reference, my pinky fingers are 2.75" and my middle fingers are 3". The comfortable span between my index and ring finger is about 3 inches.

    • @ClaythorpeMusic
      @ClaythorpeMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you ☺️ Hmmm, in general I find the stretch for this bass to be not too bad... but... it seems that while my fingers are shorter than yours, I do have a wider span than 3” between my index and ring finger. Having said that, the keys on the bass do help a lot! It is much less of a stretch than my tenor. I’d say the thing I struggled with the most for the bass wasn’t so much the stretch, but that the holes are quite a lot bigger than on any of my other recorders. My fingers are tiny and it can be tricky to get a good seal, so maybe consider narrowness of finger too 😅 Playing slower paced things gives plenty of time to plonk your fingers exactly where they need to be, and it is lovely to listen to!

    Question- I have been mulling over getting a recorder - never played one before - watching many videos for sounds of recorders. Most say to start with alto? Can you start on a bass recorder? Love the sound on the bass!

    • @FB-no4lr
      @FB-no4lr ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know if you've already decided, but you can really start on any recorder. There are a few quirks in the bass when it comes to higher notes, though. There will be many more method books and anthologies of pieces for the soprano or alto. Bass recorder music will be notated in bass clef instead of treble, which might be problematic later on if you get smaller instruments. I'm a former viola player, so I can read fluently in the treble, alto, or bass clef, so it's not an insurmountable problem. It really all depends on what you want to get out of it on a personal level.
      As an aside, because of my years of orchestral experience and reading transposing instrument lines, I haven't mastered reading alto recorder music at the notated pitch because my brain is just wired to say the alto is the "soprano in F"... but since I play alone and just make recordings for fun, I transpose the music on the notation software and play all the instruments as one fingering system 🙃

But it's always nice to find kind people helping people from the global south to keep studying even if it's for encouragement and saying what to look for, which books to buy and etc. You might find that we don't get to see many recorder players in Brazil, specially those who begun as an adult. And in Brazil we don't have international material available easily which means I have to import. And knowing what to look for can be a life saver.
