    I have successfully monitored with Apple AirPods with the Shure MV88. It works.

      That's so great, mrbrown. Did you have to troubleshoot any particular settings, or was it pretty much automatic?

      Ryan Trauman Hi. No settings required. It just worked. Audio was pumped into the AirPods and the iPhone used the MV88 for recording. Quite pleased with that setup, actually.

      A good reason to get AirPods… hmmm… Shure's support and their documentation say audio from the MV-88 can't be monitored with Bluetooth headphones, and my experience proved that to be correct. There must be something special about how AirPods handle the audio; I guess they aren't merely another set of regular Bluetooth headphones. Neat!

    • @mrbrown
      @mrbrown 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry for the confusion. I just checked my gear again and indeed you can't monitor with the AirPods while recording with the MV88. What we did was to check audio with the AirPods, after recording with the MV88. We wore the AirPods during the filming session so we didn't have to unplug the MV88 each time we wanted to listen to the audio of the recorded clip.
      I apologize for the wrong information. I blame the New Year booze.

    I bought one of these after watching TH-cam videos of people testing this mic against the Røde mics. I thought this one sounded better every time. Of course, that's TH-cam, but I intended to use it in making videos for TH-cam, so watching TH-cam videos was the perfect test for my purposes. …plus, it's tiny, app-enabled, and mounts easily in the lightning port without the need for mounting hardware. 😀

    Thanks for this review, been meaning to do one myself and compare with a boom and Tascam Uni mics. I love this little Shure! It has so many great uses: music, podcasts, meeting recordings. But I am using it mainly as a backup Audio track to my boom mic for TH-cam videos since I have a table in front of me. The audio is so good, I am considering using it as the primary audio source.

    I kind of like the fact that the mid/side setting allows you the flexibility of switching between mono cardioid and stereo (in post) without having to stop your video recording to change the polar signal.

    Excellent review of an amazing device from Shure. I have captured a few chamber music concerts with the Mid/Side mode and love the quality. Please let your viewers know the need to set the phone on Airplane and Do not Disturb mode to prevent interference.
    I have asked Shure through their forums and customer feedback modalities to please implement a software update to allow Bluetooth monitoring of recordings on the i7 models. Perhaps they will be more receptive if more of us ask them for it.

      Thanks Jon, great to hear your experience with the MV88. I just heard from another person here that the EarPods evidently do allow you to monitor with the Motiv app. I'll contact Shure and see what they know about it.

    Thanks for yet another super helpful review Curtis. Keep it up. I'd love to know if it suffers from the same problem as many other clip on iPhone mics, which is radio interference from the phone. I recently sold my RØDE Videomic Me because it could only be used when my phone was in airplane mode. I've been searching high and low for a decent mic I can use when broadcasting live video using my iPhone, during which I obviously can't have it in airplane mode. Have you come across anything suitable in your travels?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for asking! The Motiv app shows a message encouraging you to change the phone to airplane mode and turn on the "Do not disturb" mode. In many cases I forgot to do that and did not experience any RF that I can detect. I didn't receive any phone calls but did receive several text messages while in use.

    • @Tingman
      @Tingman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curtis Judd Thanks that's great to know. This does look like the best one out there but I'd really like to be sure of the RF interference before sinking my teeth (and wallet) into it.

    Good review of what appears to be an excellent mic. I have a Rode iXY-L for my iPhone 6, that and the Rode Rec app are very nice. But... had this Shure mic existed at the time I bought the iXY, I would have bought the MV88 as it is far more flexible. When using this type of mic you must remember to put the phone in airplane mode. I had a 30 minute irreplaceable interview ruined by cellphone RF racket that occurred because the phone is constantly communicating with a cell tower and that gets in the mic. Also regarding the commenter who said can't use this mic with a case, true but I very carefully cut out a rectangular slot in my case to allow for the Rode mic to snap on and that works well. Same could be done for the Shure mic. I wondered why you did not show the iPhone upside down with mic at top which is how I use mine but maybe that is obvious to your viewers. And lastly your comments about iPhone losing the headphone jack just makes me crazy all over again. As a sound professional I have many cable sets, accessories, and mics that connect to the HP jack so I am stuck forever with a 6 or 6S. Apple is so stupid sometimes, many times, as they ditch one open system after another closing up their products from third party use. The 7 with a single Lightning connector is completely idiotic. You can't use wired earbuds and charge the phone at the same time. And yes I know about Belkin but good grief what a cable mess that is. Anyway, I have to get hold of myself and calm down.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +RallenMan thanks, good advice on phone position and airplane mode. I agree, not thrilled with Apple's decision to drop the analogue jack. That move solves a problem I do not have and added a bunch of problems which I now have as a sound guy. I get the clear message that iPhone is aimed primary at consumers. Pros can use it if they're willing to adapt, quit literally in this case.

    Always helpful videos thanks Curtis!
    Any chance you have XLR boundary mics? If so could you possibly make a video on them? When they can be best used? Which would be good for plant micing for film, inc. polar patterns etc? I've read of boundary mics placed onto the inside ceiling/roof of a car, but never heard tests. It seems to be a vital mic needed in every kit, and essential for interior car dialogue.
    Keep up the great work :)

    Have you ever given a mic a bad review?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do not publish the ones that I thought would be a waste of time for viewers. So there are some which I have tested but did not end up publishing because I felt that viewers would not be getting their money's worth if they bought it.
      Also, the more I test, the more my opinion evolves. For example, I'm not a huge fan of the RODE smartLav+ but I do still have 2 of them in my kit in case I don't have a lot of other options. My original review was favorable. But now that I've tried many others, I have found some which I prefer. So my plan is to do meta-reviews periodically. I did one on microphones earlier this year.
      I can also tell you which microphones I have opted to just return back to B&H after review (they lend many of these to me for review). I did not purchase the following: Samson C02, Shure MV88, Sennheiser MKH50, AKG Blue Line CK93, Audix SCX1HC, and others I don't remember off the top of my head. That does not mean that I do not think they are good mics, just that I didn't see a place for them in my kit given the type of shooting I do. Or I didn't have the budget to purchase them (I would like a Sennheiser MKH50 but don't *need* it given that I have the AT4053b and would like to try other supercardioids before I commit to a $1000+ microphone).

      Yes, it'll be interesting to see how RODE responds.

    • @RyanTrauman
      @RyanTrauman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It hasn't really been that long since Rode updated it's iXY mic to a lightning connector, so I'm guessing it will be a while before (or if) they update again. Personally, I think the iXY sounds beautiful, but it's not nearly as versatile as the mv88.

    I have been using my MV 88 for several Months now. My biggest complaint is that it can fall off the iPhone. I like to keep it attached to the iPhone while walking around. If something rubs against it, it can knock it off and hit the ground. This is a big con in my opinion. You have to be so careful with it. Not good for "run and gun".

    Curtis, thanks for the great video. I have one question that I didn't see addressed in either the video or any of the previous comments. On the microphone setup screen there is an icon that can be activated to engage headphone monitoring, which works great for audio recording. However I found that using my IPad's camera for video recording the headphone monitoring is not enabled. Is there a way to work around this? Thanks again.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phil, I believe that the app must have a feature to enable monitoring while recording. I don't believe the default camera app on iOS is capable of that, unfortunately. Perhaps Shure support has some suggestions. Best wishes!

    Hi Curtis, cheers for the video!
    For the half-r'se weekend warrior film maker, do you think the phone with this sort of mic and the phone Lav mic is a plausible option compared to something like the basic Zoom recorders and mics ? Obviously, I already have the phone, so I'm saying up spending an additional $200-300 vs the Zoom (or similar).

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think so. Some people get super fussy about having the most noise-free audio and for those people, they may not love this mic. But I think one can create a lot of compelling pieces and most audiences won't notice that there might be 3 dB more self-noise with this vs. a much bigger, more expensive audio rig. If shooting paid work for a client, I'd still go with a proper audio recorder in most cases.

    4:43 How is your phone and mic situated for this stereo shot? I would have thought if you were holding the phone sideways, that the camera and mic would be too far separated...Like if the camera lens was left of the microphone, that something (ie:your feet walking through the snow) could pass to the right side of the frame as the camera sees it but still be on the left side of the mic..

    • @curtisjudd

      The phone was oriented horizontally (sideways). The mic and camera lens are close enough that you still get the stereo effect.

      Candy Arts CIC I have a Quad Lock case, and I used a rotary (Dremmel-type) tool to grind off the plastic that prevented my MV-88 from connecting fully. …which sounds difficult, but it took less than 30 seconds and now works perfectly.
      Alternatively, you can buy a lightning extension cable to plug into the phone, and then plug in any accessories that doesn't work with a case. A bit wonky to hold a phone and a mic, but you don't have to mod or remove your case.

    When done recording a video with the mv88 but still have it plugged to my iPhone, can I listen to my playback that I just shot?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mitch, I don't have the MV88 on hand anymore to test it, but here's my guess: You *might* be able to play to Airpods. But for EarPods, you'll need to remove the MV88 to plug in the EarPods to listen back.

    • @MitchRKicks
      @MitchRKicks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curtis Judd I figure that would be the case since I have the mv88 still connected. I sometime shoot a clip and like to see it and hear it before I move on. So it’s a little annoying if I have to take the mic off every time I decide to do this. Any suggestions ?

      @@curtisjudd I am able to monitor a recording using the AirPods Pro on an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Very little delay! I like it a lot as I don't have wires dangling around.

    Hey from Dublin. Great video. Thank you
    Any tips for me in "settings" if I want to use this with my IPhone 7 video camera to record loud Bass Guitar / Live Rock Music Gigs. Cheers. Niall

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Niall, I would go with the music setting (guitar icon) and reduce the input pretty close to the bottom to keep from clipping. I had to send this mic back (I borrowed it for the review) so I'm not sure if there is a pad in the settings, but if so, I'd try that when recording concerts. Good luck!

    I still don’t understand it one thing. Could you explain it? If we plug MV88 each other software record by MV or main board microphone?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you plug the MV88 into your phone, the recording app records from the MV88, not the iPhone microphone.

    • @omnitron
      @omnitron 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curtis Judd thank you, so all settings are stored in microphone but encoding and final file type is going from application? Can I record also from both apps together? MV88 sound app and video and replace audio in video software like Final Cut Pro?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael, correct, you change the configuration of the mic in the Shure app, but can record with any camera or audio recording app. I don't believe you can record with two apps at the same time. But there isn't a need to do that, the camera app will capture the audio with the MV88 so no need to sync in post. Best wishes!

    Does anyone know if this would work for recording zoom.us calls/meetings? If I plug into the mic to monitor, would I only hear what's going into the mic, or also the audio from the cellphone (the other people on the zoom call)? Thanks!

      True for many cases. I use the apple case and it isn't a problem with that because the bottom is not covered except at the corners. But many other cases would be so you make a good point. Thanks.

      I use a CableJive dockStubz to make space for my Survivor case. It’s not perfect, but I never take the case off in use. Using has no impact on sound or usability - nor does a two-foot dockXtender cable, either.

    stupid apple removes 3.5mm plug to save space and now you hav to buy such a huge mic instead of small 3.5mm one :D

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still have mixed feelings about the removal of the 3.5mm jack. It may have been a courageous decision, but I'm not sure it served all of their customers well.
      That aside, this is a pretty nice mic :)

    Terrible noise floor and "tinny" sound.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. The noise floor is mostly actual sound from the room vs. self-noise. The pickup pattern, even at its narrowest requires that you work in close for the best sound.
