- The All Wood Muscle Wood log splitter along with the All Wood log staging table is a huge asset when splitting big blocks for fire wood! Rachel and I team up to turn big cotton wood rounds into small campfire splits. The bigger the round the more wood you get from it but they also require more work. This splitting table definitely makes the hard work easier! Firewood can be tough work so we are sharing our methods to save your back and make the job easier.

That looked like it went fairly well for splitting cottonwood. Here, it's usually very knotty. Fortunately, I haven't had any in years to deal with.

Heath when U get those big rounds half split and they are stuck. Leave it sit on the butt end and push it through the wedge on its side with the 4 way all the way down. Works really good

I've found that cheap, low-grade woods such as cottonwood, willow, poplar, basswood, box elder, etc suck as a campfire wood by themselves. But mix it with oak and cottonwood is a great firewood.
I agree, stand alone they aren’t great but a little bit mixed in helps with easy lighting and a better flame.

Campfire wood is where the $$ is. Heating wood is people trying to save $$. Beers and bonfires!
Least favorite wood ....ahhh id say the kind you have to buy in but thats just me cause im cheep lol. Lota work to get big rounds on the table but i think ya get better quality splits from them big rounds . Great video you guys .

That's got to be the best splittin' cottonwood I've ever seen! No cuttin', or tearin', just splittin'!- Seem to me the staging table could be a little lower. Maybe the splitter table could be bigger, then you wouldn't need that staging table at all. - Rachel does pretty well! She needs to remem that there's no right or wrong way to split wood, but there are preferred ways!!
True, everyone seems to do it a little different. I may try to lower the table a little when we set up our more permanent processing center.

Least favourite wood is poplar. But not necessarily to work with. Next, white birch. The bark makes it hard to work with. And it’s just a so so wood. Get it before it rots. We have that stringy wood here, but I don’t know what type of wood it is. It’s hard to work with. But good wood other wise.

Good video and job I don't like any thing that's full of knot's. I split them with a chain saw now I'm to old . I hate to saw down paradise trees I got my arm broke when one split. Take care, be safe and well.
I have yet to noodle a round but thinking without a tractor or skid steer mounted splitter this may be the way to go with some.

i found in the past on the big rounds the multi split wedge saves on the splits but in the same time increases chancing the splits around slowing the final splitting time down . @@hardworkingmanoutdoors
Cottonwood's the one that plugs up your Carrier a/c. And their heck if you have a swimming pool.
Oh yeah, I have a big ol cottonwood in the yard I want to drop but Rachel says no. May have to fell it when she’s gone, there’s no putting it back up once it’s down.

Hey Heath and Rachel. Not sure I would have even bothered with Cottonwood, but if it sells for you, then go for it. You may have had an easier time with the Axis.
We will be running some big rounds through the Axis soon. The cottonwood mixes in well with campfire wood but definitely wouldn’t sell it as a stand alone.
Stacking in the tote will give you a more consistent quantity in each tote plus you get more in each tote.
True but this wood will just be mixed in to our bundles and roadside stand and tossing it in is a lot faster.

Sweet gum is some of the worst I've ever split. That was quite the workout wrestling those big rounds. Good job!
I’ve never split Gum but have not heard much good about it’s splitting characteristics.
That’s some heavy work, I dread that kind to stuff with my 12-22. So much handling. Messing with That big stuff is when I wish I had an axis. I feel like that machine is ideal for breaking down the big pieces and dicing them up!
I have some big rounds to run on the Axis coming up! Also have a stack of blocks to run the 1/3rd of a cord challenge with the 12-22, we’re coming for you lol.
I think you need to mark somehow the orange wedge support so when you know the size you want at the lowest setting it can be put there within reason instead of guessing. At least until she can get use to the 4 way.
The only problem with that is each round splits a bit different depending on knots, diameter, etc. it takes a bit of learning and guessing.

We do occasionally but definitely prefer smaller stuff.
The Eastonmade Axis is equally good at processing big rounds into what every size split you desire.
I have some big rounds I plan on running through the Axis soon!

That table or any table for that matter is a nice addition but those rounds are too big to be muscling around. I'd rather take the time to noodle them down or invest in a skid steer splitter (if you have a skid steer). I can get a lot of huge rounds from a tree service and bought a Wolferidge skid steer splitter and it's saved me many back issues.
I do not have a skid steer, I’d love one. I could run that style splitter off my tractor but I don’t often deal with the big rounds. The next big rounds will go to the axis, then may try noodling.
Good idea with labeling the totes, Heath. However, for Rachel’s sake, the Axis would’ve been the better choice - no lifting those enormous rounds or splits. Believe it would’ve been faster as well. Just my opinion.
Looking back I think you may be right, the next big rounds we have will be hitting the Axis!
Heath have you considered modifying the table to Rachel's left, a flatter extension then you guys wouldn't have to chuck those pieces back over the table reducing wasted energy
I have not, I have considered slightly lowering the table but that would take quite a bit of work. However when we get our semi permanent firewood processing center set up I may recess the table into the ground a little to lower it to the perfect height.
I have never split cottonwood. For the most part your rounds didn’t split too bad. I’m not a fan of splitting Hickory! Nice work Heath and Rachel 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Todd, some Hickory splits tough for sure. This cottonwood wasn’t too bad. Some is stinky, slimy, and stringy. At least Hickory is a premium wood!!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors Yeah I have split willow and it split fine just stinks! We have so much good hardwood’s offered to us that I can afford to turn down cottonwood and elm now.

The 12-22 was tucked away in the garage, we will be getting it out here shortly for a few videos. If we had the pull back arm it would definitely be out.

John, looking back it may have been. The next big rounds we have will go on the Axis.
Heath, are you able to shorten the return stroke on that allwood? Looks like it's at 20-22"s and you're splitting 16-17"s... that makes a world of difference in time and energy...
Greg, not that I know of unless you catch it and stop the stroke yourself. It returns so fast though it’s hard to do.
Maybe you can sell a lot of wood and upgrade your muscle wood to a bigger tray and auto cycle?
Eddie, I am working on a conveyor set up right now that may make the small table okay. Autocycle is in the works!

Willow is the worst wood to work with it goes straight to the dump! Wet Cottonwood is pretty awful too.
This cottonwood wasn’t terrible but it’s been cut for a while.
How do you know, which is good wood, and fire wood.....
We burn the punky or less desirable looking wood and sell the nice clean straight splits.
Poplar, because it burns up fast (bang for buck type deal). It's alright.
I like poplar for a campfire mix!

Glad I didnt have to smell that nasty crap. At least with the bark off it didnt look all slimy. Rachel I would say cottonwood is least favorite. Wilow is a close second but does split better.
Bert, it definitely wasn’t as slimy as usual. I’ve never messed with willow. I have a tree clean up job coming up if the rain ever stops and I can get to it. A giant willow half in a pond. I don’t plan on splitting it though just removing it and piling it up for a big fire.
Cotton wood get bad reputation from all you guys with all that good wood. I don’t like residential pine blue spruce. I got some gum or elm one time. I had to 1/4 them with the saw. Cotton is my main wood. You got to have a hatched or axe next to the splitter. Nice work. I think Rachel could take ya from what I seen here 😂

@@hardworkingmanoutdoors if you want anything other then pine and cotton and popular. You got get it from people’s yards. I not sure ever seen oak tree I sure some in parks and such. It cold here and we get it done with pine and cotton wood. About only time my fire goes outs once week or 2 weeks when clean it. Fill it up shut it down and still coals in the morning.
