    I don't know how I made my way to watch your firewood splitting videos. Now I am hooked up with it. I love to watch you splitting smaller splits with your super splitter. we don't split firewood with machines, mauls and axes are the things used out here in our region as I am from a corner of North East India called Nagaland. Keep it up 👍👏

    I have a lighter DR splitter. I know yours will splitter just about anything. People underestimate these kinetic splitters but until you operate one you won't see it. It helps that you aim for the cream of the premium firewood. That makes it almost effortless. Have a good one. See you tomorrow. I'll be 59 tomorrow.

      I agree Al. I think it makes the splitting action faster and more efficient. When you split smaller diameter rounds you can keep it whole after it is first split, pull it back, rotate, and have it quartered in no time. Joe

    We've been using a kinetik log splitter like this one for years. Absolutely great. I will say that my father had to live with only 7 fingers for the last 20 years of his life. He lost the three using this machine. The new machines come with dual switch controls for just this reason. it's slower to operate but certainly safer.

      I started in the offshore oilfield out in the Gulf of Mexico years ago in the early 70s- much of what we did all day long was repetitious in those days- - everything broke apart we broke it apart with a sledgehammer and beat it back together with a sledgehammer - in fact for a workout these days I split wood by ax and sometimes I cut it with a Crosscut saw in my old age-- I live in the country so it's my means are going to the gym for City dwellers- in the oilfield when a man was working as you were on that splitter we would say (HE'S GETTIN IT) - LOL-

    Great video. That rail was getting gummed up. Ash is bad for gumming up the blades on our sawmill as well. You wouldn't think so, considering its so dry, but it does.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SS works best in dry conditions. In this case we had a lot of snow that had just melted and there was moisture in the bark. Also I had bucked these logs in the rain and that caused a lot of the chips to stick to the bark...not to mention the lichen that was on many of the logs. I had to scrape more than normal. I have started to use random scraps to scrape the crud off since this will not scratch the beam like a metal scraper etc would. Joe

    Even if you are not a business, it’s amazing what family and friends go through when having a fire. In the fireplace, outside (especially outside) this is a lot of wood split perfectly in barely 25 minutes !! You can basically filll that trailer in 1.5 to 2 hours and there’s enough wood for a week or two of camp fires. Nice!
    I have been watching the automated systems where you can split the whole log in 4 or 6 pieces all at once but that system produces some pretty rough firewood. This, you have control to make whatever size of wood you want from each log. They don’t always split into 6 perfect pieces!! 😂😂. I have been using a cheap splitter that’s much slower than this and with the machine I have, you yearn for the automated machines. I would have split 1/2 of what you did in under 25 minutes. You can see where I would have to work for 3+ hours to fill that trailer, I think actually between 4 - 5 hours. I think my dump trailer is about the same size of yours. (Perspective is funny through the camera, for me anyway.
    Thanks for sharing! Suddenly the video was done!! Kind of mesmerizing. I can see where it’s much more fun with an appropriately fast machine!

      To the average person you made it seem so simple as you split wood but sometimes those logs come apart with explosive force- in my case there are thousands of gum trees around and it's considered trash wood- if you split it when it's green it's real stringy - so I split it when it's dry and when they split they often split at explosive force - LOL- but at times any log will split explosive force in fly in every direction - so your wife deserved that hazardous pay lol

I know it’s not as fast as a processor, but boy oh boy does that look smooth and the wood looks carved the splits are so clean. Visual appeal is “value added” indeed! Gonna order my SS in 2023 and get going on my inventory for sale. Going with the HD model and the Honda engine that I will replace with electric when I get my barn built.

      I know this from hard physical labor in the offshore oilfield - as we sweat we lose a lot of the minerals our bodies need to properly function also Studies have been done on people that live in the deserts of the world they constantly add natural salt or mineral salt to the water as they drink throughout the day they shake the water up or stir It before they drink it- that creates a negative charge to the water and minerals when they do that and our bodies really absorb the water in that state- in the oilfield we made it mandatory that the crews take salt tablets throughout the day it was to prevent them from having Strokes - also to maintain their energy level through a 12 and 16 hour day of exertion- it was just figured in that they would eat about 5 lb of uncooked beef every 6 hours they serve food every 6 hours 24 / 7 - it took that much beef to maintain their energy levels through the day- so when you're working like that if you find that you get real hungry- if you add a lot of beef to your meals that will quench that hunger- if the crews did not get the beef necessary they would not be as productive as they were- you can eat a lot of soft scrambled or soft boiled eggs and they will accomplish the same thing as beef

    • @able880
      @able880 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When Hurricane Katrina hit down here in the south we all got out on the roads and started clearing all the trees off the roads- it wasn't very long and many begin to tire out - in the oilfield vegans would come out there and they quickly found out that a vegan diet just won't work where a lot of energy is required - it was the same after Katrina many found out that beans and rice just won't cut it when you need a lot of energy beef and eggs have a lot of protein in them when I mentioned 5 lb of uncooked beef it's only about 2 lb once it's cooked but either way when you're exerting yourself our bodies require a lot of protein in the form of meat or eggs if you cook eggs at high temperatures it destroys the protein and low protein value

      Thanks Lucius and I wish the same for you. This was slilghtly more than 1/3rd cord, or a rick, or a face cord lol. Whichever you prefer. The big logs you see in this vid are somewhat slower to work with. If I split a bunch of 8-10" rounds...especially with a person handing me the logs I can fly! Joe

  • @jasone9
    @jasone9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For premium firewood this seems to be the machine for the job. I know you've mentioned the increasing need for a commercial splitter with a log lift, which would compliment your existing equipment well. Have you thought about a machine with a box wedge? I know they produce more waste than a 4 way, but no resplitting.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am unsure about the box wedge Jason. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't. I would have to spend the day with one probably to make sure I find them fun to run. I am still looking for a commercial splitter however. This Super Splitter is awesome but I still need something a little more stout, that can pick logs up etc. Joe

    • @jasone9
      @jasone9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have some reservation with the box wedge too as sometimes it appears to really tear the wood up, I'm guessing it depends on the species being split. I like that once it's on the splitter it seems like much less wrestling the round around.

    For getting the gunk off the Super Splitter rail, didn't you use a gasket scraper before? Or does a wood chip actually work better? Maybe a drill with a soft wire brush like brass would work - not one from steel!

    If you offered kindling to the small amount customers would it be better bound in twine/jute or packed into a paper lunch bag? An easy way to turn the slivers of wood created in the splitting process into something you can sell/give away as added value to the product by less labor/materials they need to create/buy from others.

    Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. You certainly got a wonderful Dec day there, its damp and slushy here today. A couple of ideas for dealing with the resin build up on the plate. Have you thought of using a gas soaked rag, which you could keep in a sealed container like a Tuppaware item, to clean the plate regularly. Alternatively use a spray brake cleaner and rag. Also, how about using a plastic windscreen scraper to remove that pesky resin, that wouldn't damage the plate.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hit the bearings with a heavy spray lube about every 2 hours and I use that on the gunk which seems to loosen it good for removal.
