I don't have any experience with African cichlids, but the rule I've always followed is "if it's mouth is big enough to eat it, it will eat it"

Doubling is always good
If they are about the same size you should be ok

I've thought about doing the same thing with one of those big white things. Also I don't think I would risk sticking those fish in with the tiny ones my thoughts is you would probably lose some of them
