We have that same charger at work. It’s about 18 years old now and still works like new. It replaced another one, same model that had been around for probably 20 years until a 983 Cat loader backed over it. We changed the wheels on it, from the little ones it came with, to a set of 14 inchers. Makes rolling it over gravel and ruts much easier.
Nice charger. I was going to get one. I was talking about it to my wife. I said yes she said no. So we compromised. She bought some plants and 10 yards of dirt. End of story. Hahaha
I use an 1970’s - 1980’s 120 volt to 12 volt converter from an old motorhome. Just added a timer switch, grounded power plug and heavy duty jumper cables for the output. These are heavy duty weighing in at about 40 pounds and will charge just about any battery even if it is completely dead. They also have a regulated 12 volt output if needed.
No wonder this battery charger is expensive. It actually works. Consumer grade battery chargers used to work fairly reliably, but that was way back when Sears Roebuck competed with Montgomery Wards.
I have a snap on I purchased around 1983. It was the largest 12 volt charger they had with a 550 amp boost and 70 amp charge plus it can be used outdoors in any weather, rain doesn't affect it. It also has the built in polarity checker in the ground clamp.
I don’t work on large engines of any kind (small engine mechanic here), but it’s nice to see some heavy duty equipment like the 12-18-24 V charger you reviewed, knowing they’re still made, and made in the USA. Buy once, cry once! Work smart, not hard!
I have one that i pulled out of the scrap pile over 20 years ago. Made some minor repairs on it and have been using it ever since. Replaced the timer a couple of years ago.
All the municipalities I have visited use that exact model of charger. Our charger is subjected to a lot of dust, salt, moisture and steady use. Paint on the bottom areas is peeling. It still functions the way it should.
You are rite on the money! The very first shop I worked at in the mid 80's had one of those chargers. Same box same wheels same handle with the cross bar to attach the cable clamps and it looked like it was 25 years old back then. Charged every thing from a four 12 volt old Pete to the shop forklift flawlessly remember it as soon as you rolled it out , VERY BEST CHARGER !
I have an Associated Charger in my home garage. Probably overkill, but I wont have to turn around in 5 years to get another one anymore. Just got tired of the cheap chargers. I'm an Amateur Astronomer and my big scopes run on car batteries. I've found that I do alot more charging for everyone in the family because they know my charger will get the job done, and fast.
On my 1999 f250 I have a boat onboard charger 2x12volt charger. Not fast but charges and maintains batteries like a braze. I can keep it hooked up and only charge them when I plug it in.
My gramps had one of these for his business. It was mostly white with red. I had no idea what an heirloom that thing was until today. Wished I had that thing even if it didnt work, I bet I could get the company to re gut it.
When I started wrenching in 1969 the place I worked for had two chargers one a sun the other was associated they were old when I started there the died 4 years later I worked there to 1976 and it still worked great we also had a starting unit in a pickup from associated it always worked and it was not new either those two were still worked well when I moved to a better job. I was living in Minnesota then so they had a workout all winter long.
All I ever use was Schumacher battery chargers and they’ve never let me down I got a couple of videos online of me, jumping off a 7.3 L power stroke and a 3.5 L Ford engine using the SC 1309
I Love this video; I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" and your automobiles performance literally "starts" with your power maintenance. Ordering, thanks for binging this! PS: Love that pup! Subbed
I'm sold. All the newer off-the-shelf "smart" chargers suck. Many won't even turn on and attempt to charge if the battery voltage is too low. Give me an old school "dumb" charger any day.
I am not opposed to tech for chraging for the "set it and forget it" factor but yeah there should be a big red "I give no sh!+s...I still want it to charge" button.
I bought two craftsman 225 or 250 amp chargers, one for myself and one for the local FD, that was in the early 80's timer switch replaced with a toggle on the FD one and both are still going strong.
I have the similar model charger from the early 80’s. The cord and leads had begun to crack and rot from age so it was being thrown away. On its way to the dumpster it took a detour into my pickup instead of the dumpster. With a little electrical tape it’s served me well for the last 7 years, and I don’t anticipate junking it any time soon.
I had to go to north west fort worth today from waco. I almost went the long country route and come by to give you a beer. But my wife was with me and......
Hello Steven, glad to see you back, I’m a tractor trailer fleet mechanic Up here on Long Island, NY and the shop I work in has that same battery charger and yes it works great, also I bought many years ago for home use the associated hand held load and alternator tester which works great. 👍🏻 Again welcome back.
Measure the handheld unit against a Volt meter and you'll find it off by almost 2 V which means the rest of the algorithms on the unit are also off. We use only midtronics for accuracy.
I just picked up a used 6006 model made by Associated. I ran across it in a classified sales site and showed it to the shop boss who wanted to lowball the seller and get it for the shop I work at. Instinct told me the seller would not haggle over price, so I just threw down on it for myself. Associated is top quality, I never even HEARD OF them before this one!
I had an old all metal Craftsman 225 on wheels that lasted over 24 years. I literally had a verbal cussing episode when it smoked and died. I bought a supposedly good but plastic POSheet from the Amazon monopoly, it lasted 2 charges. So that cost me $100 a charge. I’ve been hesitant to go the Schumacher route and now you confirmed my thoughts. I know the one I want now from Associated but it’s a grand😞
My jetta battery cables are reversed in color, positive is black and negative is red. Yea, i fried stuff in that car a couple months ago. Now i check for the + and - symbols.
Pro mechanic, need a home charger. I do quite a lot of work at home. I cannot decide between a 6010B ($466) and a 6002B ($852). I've never needed 24 Volts, but there's no option on the 6010B (discontinued A model had 12V hi, m, lo - B only has hi and lo with no stated max amperage for lo). For the 6001A vs 6002B, it's $100 difference, so no way I'm not just going all the way if I'm spending that much. Considered the US20 ($180) 10/40/200 for 12V), but it sold out while I was deciding and it has a lower end rectifier and transformer (2yr vs 5yr warranty - care less about warranty than it just being dang good). These are the only 3 I'm considering because I want FULL MANUAL (even the middle of the road Associated 6012/6009/6006AGM chargers have a PCB) and a timer after my experiences with auto chargers. For example, my DSR Schumacher "Pro" series will not charge a discharged battery, sometimes even after tricking it into starting (it will test again once into the cycle and stop, calling a good battery bad). I also very much like the thought of US made, parts availability and serviceability, and I like the color blue, ha. My old Sears 2/10/50A works great, but I need to go faster. I like the idea of being able to charge up a battery and then leave it on a trickle with the same unit (6002B on lowest 12V setting) if I want. That said, I do have the other two chargers to more delicately get to 100% state of charge, but it's a hassle to swap chargers and then potentially have to set a timer on my phone or something. On the other hand, I really like the idea of having a portable fast charger with 230A UL rated jump, and I rarely need more than that (although I do occasionally need more than the jump packs I have available - or even a well used huge one). I could throw the 6010 in my Suburban with ease for anything mobile. And then there's the issue of price, but I don't even care that much anymore after all the hassle and lost time. But on the other hand, money saved could go into a power supply fund in case I ever go down that road... but I want at least ONE big old, fully old school charger. When I decided it was time, I looked for used manual chargers. Even fine with old and lower end than associated if it is manual and works and not overpriced. I tried to buy a few, but Facebook marketplace is literally hell, and all others are 2+ hours away. Been looking hard for a while now. The ones I do find are typically asking more than what I can buy for new, or they're just overpriced for their condition. Someone push me over the edge here. Do I go 6010B or 6002B? Or do I just wait and keep searching for an acceptable used unit? I know any of these options will work, but I'm in the worst possible state of analysis paralysis. Any opinions are welcome if you took the time to read my neurotic comment, haha. Thanks and thanks for this video! Not a lot of them out there about these chargers, not even a lot on the forums that goes in depth or compares features all that much. I'll make a video about whatever I end up with. Too many of us have been bit by "smart" chargers.
I wish I would’ve seen and heard of this brand before I just bought my new charger today. I had a Schumacher that only works when it wants to,went with a Noco for here around the house
I removed the stock cables and ran 20 feet of 2/0 cable. I also removed the clamps, put 1400 amp clamps on, and put # 4 cable to each jaw so both are hot. I am not sure I would put it on high on a car on a high setting as sometimes it will put out 17 volts and pop the ECM breaker. # 2 low 13.9 volts #3 15.5 volts #4 16.6 volts Hi 17 volts Boost mode 18.5 volts
5:07 so true... I am in automotive but have ran into aftermarket setups that are dirty and use black cable both pos and neg lol. Also with equipment there is no telling if it has the right battery or the same group BUT posts reversed. Not to long ago was messing with a fork lift with a shady battery with black leads on both sides.
I Have An Associated 6 And 12 Volt Charger Since The Early 80's Still Works. I Also Have That Associated Batt. Load Tester Which Have The Good Clamps Plus I Made Custom Jumper Cables 25 Feet From Real 2 Gauge Welding Cable And I Put Associated Clamps On Them Which You Know Are The Best Clamps. I Always Have Loved Associated Since I Started As A Mechanic In 1973 That Company Is Awesome.
Great for a shop; for a non-mechanic go to Wal-Mart every five yrs & buy their best battery, right now approx $139, & you'll never be stranded. Batteries are consumables, like tires & brakes, they will need replaced over time😁 Ed c
Had one like that 20 some years ago but it only lasted about a month. Worked great until my boss ran it over with a terex scraper (may God have mercy on it's soul). Never seen a charger so flat before.....could of put it in a suitcase. Put the charger on the rear engine batteries and told the boss it should be good to go after lunch. Told him about the charger but he decided to see if it would start then backed over it and took it over to our big shop where I was going to oil change and grease it. I asked where he put the charger so I could put it back in the service truck and he said what charger? I told him about the crime the charger was first then the 100' extension cord held on for about 50' as he dragged it away. The flattened charger was dragged about 200' before it gave up. All that was left was the ground cable that hung on with super strength for the last 4000' to the big shop. Told the boss it kinda makes the ole billfold weep in silence huh. Our rule was don't move any equipment without doing a walk around....he broke that rule.....and the charger. He made that rule a year earlier when he flattened a charger with the C6 dozer he put a charger on.....kinda looked like a waffle.LOL When I started that job everyone told me, keep one eye on what your doing and the other on the boss. If I had to take an eye off anything never off the boss.......kept me alive for 40 years. But yet I couldn't win the lottery.
$1000?!!! Wow. That is more than a mortgage payment on my 2200sqft house. Great tool it may be, but too rich for my blood. Good on ya mate for being able to buy a lambo charger, and I am certain it is worth its weight in gold, but wow that is worth a lot of food stamps.
This Charger, along with many other "Transformer Based" chargers is one of the best out there if you are in a Hurry, and you know how to use the thing, watch the voltages with a volt meter, and step it down at the correct time -during the charging sequence of Bulk, Absorbtion, Float and Equalization. The best overall commercially obtainable charger that in know of on the planet is however is the Solar PL2320. Battery charging and recovery, like anything, requires some finess and is easily overdone... And yes i also work on big things with lots of batteries and i have tried at least 20 different battery chargers by now...
I've had mine since the 80s, it's been ran over twice, I've done some cosmetic repairs, I haven't had to contact them in awhile now, probably early 90s but I bet ya it's still easy to get parts for them. When I got divorced I kid you not I brought up she ran over my battery charger and air compressor lol.
I bought a Schumacher sc1400 to jump diesels in winter. It smoked 4 batteries running over 16.6 volts. Ans ive emailed factory and 0 reply.. i just want to find someone to repair it vs buying another 350.00 unit. I cant find any info on em
Hey now my Schumacher floor model is just fine for home use. Lol mine has 10,20,40,&200amp charge/start mode and works fine for my situation. It starts my 1994 ford e150 5.8l v8 no problem.
I have a wheeled gold smart charger from diehard... It works just fine if you're not an idiot. Don't expect it to charge batteries that are completely dead (and likely shot) though. I have a jury rigged chargerbfor that.. 60% of the time the battery is bad all the time.
It is a cheap price for a battery charger if you consider how many junk chargers you buy before you buy a good one and never buy the cheap junker shumacher ones.
Thanks for the plug for associated! I don't have any 24v systems on the farm, biggest I have is just a 12v skid loader Are the smaller size associated chargers as good as the big one?
Love the show thank you for being honest love to you of the battery chargers. This is so important for people to know because corporate America they love to lie so they can make a dollar but they teach the young people to grow up. Tell the truth don’t lie and see lies every day all around us, even from the top people around us this makes such a big difference so people can know and make the companies step up and do the product right because of Main product. Did you talk about they have a bad reputation right now they used to be good really good among the best, now they put out crappy service basically crappy crappy products you can’t depend on so the other company associated products or whatever you call them their top-notch right now that company nothing nobody can say that they are very expensive but you get what you pay for pay a lot of money you get a lot of product You can’t pay anything inspect to get something doesn’t quite work that way keep doing what you’re doing. I love it. I’m retired now I miss it around. The batteries have lined up for different systems. I would build and you need a good battery charger and good batteries no crappy stuff That just wears you down the crappy products. I don’t know why companies wasted time but they do because people out there looking for something for 👍👍
I HAVE 2 600B CANTSTOP THEM love 24v option as i have lot of cat 24v sys only thing i dont lie is cbles are tiff when really cold but i can live witth that great american product made in st louis mo by americans
I recently bought a new car battery charger with the Stanley name on it. Electronically controlled, it overnight blew up the battery in my F350 truck. Stanley refused to cover the battery charger under warranty and of course did not cover the battery their charger destroyed. Early 70's I bought a small portable Sears battery charger with automatic trickle charge, automatic fast charge and 50 amp boost for starting a vehicle. And it would sense when the battery was charged, decreasing the charging amps as the battery charged. I did not have to "guess" how many minutes to set the charger for. I could set it and forget it. That charger lasted over 50 years of hard use. (I was a serious home mechanic for a number of years). Now I can only find junk portable chargers. If anyone can recommend another portable brand of mechanical (electrical not electronically controlled) battery charger, please let me know. An electronic battery charger will usually have an LED display while an electrical battery charger will always only have a charge meter, not an LED display. Looking for something portable, the one in the video is too large and expensive for my use.
I'm currently considering the Associated 6010B. Portable and manual with a timer. Expensive. Almost wish the A model was still available because I don't need 24V and I'd rather have 12V hi, m, lo instead of just hi and lo. Still undecided. I've spent hours looking for manual chargers and associated is the only US made, higher output battery charger available anymore. Parts are available too. Best price I can find is 466 right now. Rizk is recommended a lot online but their website disappeared around covid time. I'm seriously considering just buying a 6002B for 852 shipped... I'm afraid we're going to hit a point where you can't even find a decent used higher amperage charger... already kind of can't, at least not within 2 hours of me. I'm fed up with my "PRO SERIES" Schumacher DSR that won't charge a discharged battery, and my super old 2/10A sears is great, but no timer and I need more amperage to get work done faster.
How do they provide 400A on a 120V circuit? That would require more than 40 amps at 120V. Does it have a built-in battery, a large capacitor bank, or does it just rely on circuit breakers being slow to trip on a 200% load?
Thanks for showing/explaining the controls... it looks horribly confusing. With the weird zig zags inter connecting, especially if you need to use it outdoors in low light to charge 4 battery Semis. Quality American product.. but poorly labeled controls.
Is the associated US20 charger any good. I was looking at all the chargers the have the DE sulfation mode and they seem to not have very good ratings. I just work on my own vehicles, tractor, lawnmowers etc... If the US20 is not that good what is minim priced charger that you would recommend for an old guy.
I have that same charger. The company that I used to work for told me to throw it out because the cord was damaged. I threw it out in the back of my truck. Put a new plug on it. That was probably 15 years ago.
Bought a Duralast 200 amp tower charger. the buttons to select type and amperage are not illuminated and there a 7 volt continuous power at the leads. The cooling fan is not turning and I've only used this several times. I looked for a fuse and didn't find one. Sprayed it with electrical cleanner to remove any foreign debris. Any advice?
I've got eight battery chargers from 20 amps all the way down to 500 milliamps all the one of those battery chargers are automatic two of them will do 12 and 24 volts at 8 amps at 4 respectively surprisingly they work pretty well for something made in China. What's the battery charger I drove 200 miles round trip to buy is the only one that is a manual battery charger that switches to automatic trickle charge once full charge is created it is 6 amps and is a harbor freight product was also the last one they had in close out inventory. The reason I decided I am one of that battery charger is because it was the only manual battery charger I could find after 2 hours of searching the internet it didn't cost $1,500 bucks and full size shop type. Continuing automatic battery chargers if they sensitive voltage is below 11 volts due to the computer processor they will go to default mode and say the battery cannot be charged in other words they shut down. Emmanuel charger does not do that the alternative is to have a battery that you know has a good voltage reading hook up your automatic battery charger to it and after it is charging the battery you know has a charge of voltage above 11 volts and then you jumper cables to charge the other battery monitoring with your multimeter or a voltmeter intermittently until the voltage reaches 11 volts or 11.5 volts and then you can put the charger directly on the weak battery.
Since 1948

Haha, while a 2 tr old post, it's 2024 and my charger IS a Montgomery Ward. Ya move the switch to 6v or 12v, - hook up, plug in - and watch the gauge
Hey dude
You got my profile!!

Do you wanna sell it? =)
@@drmalenko Probably made by us.
What model is it?
The short answer it was made in 1983, no way the quality is the same today. Everything is Chinese junk
How many payments do you have left?

I have a shop and been stuck wat too many times with dead diesels in my bay this video was perfect!
I have a Century charger over 30 years old, still works. It even has 100 amp boost to start vehicles.

I've definitely hooked them up backwards before.. And it even has a bright red plastic cover on the wire-- and I still messed it up somehow.

Mechanics such as yourself, this charger is a no brainer. Laypersons such as me, I'll call for a ride and buy two batteries. Thanks for the video.
The Smurfs have definitely moved in on that battery.
I wish I would’ve seen and heard of this brand before I just bought my new charger today. I had a Schumacher that only works when it wants to,went with a Noco for here around the house
We had an associated battery charger in the repair shop when L started turning wrenches 1967, Still working today.
I got it because of your video. I really love it. Thanks!!!
# 2 low 13.9 volts
#3 15.5 volts
#4 16.6 volts
Hi 17 volts
Boost mode 18.5 volts
5:07 so true... I am in automotive but have ran into aftermarket setups that are dirty and use black cable both pos and neg lol.
Also with equipment there is no telling if it has the right battery or the same group BUT posts reversed. Not to long ago was messing with a fork lift with a shady battery with black leads on both sides.
Picked one up at an auction for $300 I’d buy one again at full retail if I had to, flawless unit
What about luxury cars like Mercedes and BMW?
More videos like this! Very informative! Love it!
Enjoyed watching your video. Very informative.
Batteries are consumables, like tires & brakes, they will need replaced over time😁

He made that rule a year earlier when he flattened a charger with the C6 dozer he put a charger on.....kinda looked like a waffle.LOL
When I started that job everyone told me, keep one eye on what your doing and the other on the boss.
If I had to take an eye off anything never off the boss.......kept me alive for 40 years.
But yet I couldn't win the lottery.
4:03 was that the inspiration for the Alien Monster??🇬🇧🤣
I had a chance to buy one from that company for "cheap" (compared to new), but did not have the money and it got sold to someone else
Can a large charger like this do AGM battery type? Most new cars are coming with them now.
For sure best chargers! Have one on our farm and at the shop I work at, have a 6/12 volt Mac branded version at my home shop, all awesome stuff
Wish they had a small unit for people like me that collect garden tractors and have over 30 batteries in my collection LOL
they do
How can you tell when a battery is fully charged? , 12v 800 cca battery out of the car. (like the settings you have @ 20 amps)
Also what will be the fastest settings to charge a battery ? Minutes, Amps, low or high?
When you need it, and gotta have it, and it WORKS, there is no other choice.
It's hard to beat a DC welder as a battery charger.
I was thinking the very same thing. Can you give me any tips? I work on old Kenworth trucks converted to 12 volt start
Can you please do a video on A/C
My 2005 Cummins had a leak and don’t know the best way to track down location
associated is the best charger out there
Dope hoodie!! Got the same one!!
I have an super old one i dont know who made it it works great but its super old 👍 pleas make a toolbox tour pleas 👍thank you for making great Videos
These are the exact same 400 amp battery chargers that we have in the shop at the coal mine that I worked at.
I bought a Schumacher sc1400 to jump diesels in winter. It smoked 4 batteries running over 16.6 volts. Ans ive emailed factory and 0 reply.. i just want to find someone to repair it vs buying another 350.00 unit. I cant find any info on em
The newer electronic battery chargers won’t charge a flat battery, getting harder to find a deal on the old ones.
Nice. I guess I’m going to get one. Now it cost about $855
For real this is the move.
Hey now my Schumacher floor model is just fine for home use. Lol mine has 10,20,40,&200amp charge/start mode and works fine for my situation. It starts my 1994 ford e150 5.8l v8 no problem.
Golden, Thnks. Subscribed and thumbs up!!
1000 bucks. Damn. I just tinker on weekends i wonder how hard it would be to find this bad boy in the wild and the person not know what they have
How do you know when batter is fully charged will the charge turn off
The old battery chargers work well. The new crap is total garbage. I hope my old style charger never dies.
I have a wheeled gold smart charger from diehard... It works just fine if you're not an idiot. Don't expect it to charge batteries that are completely dead (and likely shot) though. I have a jury rigged chargerbfor that.. 60% of the time the battery is bad all the time.
I have a Midtronics battery charger ,One solid unit Made in USA
It is a cheap price for a battery charger if you consider how many junk chargers you buy before you buy a good one and never buy the cheap junker shumacher ones.
Thanks for the plug for associated! I don't have any 24v systems on the farm, biggest I have is just a 12v skid loader
Are the smaller size associated chargers as good as the big one?
They're all great. They make various different models that'll handle.what ever you need.
Hi S Cox . Liked and subscribed.
That thing is an arc welder lol BAD ASS !!!!
For $860, it SHOULD work pretty well, and make you some coffee while you wait! I am looking for an "accetable" under $150 one
I only have Spartan jumpers. What brand are those? Anyone know? Im bot seeing it.
I've got a Princessauto charger for $65.00. Hoping for the best, lol.
The best jumper cable ever! Are the ones i made up! There limper, thick, light. There crimped and solder on handles clamps

Thank you 👍 Get out there and fixed something Mr Stephen Cox

500 % agree, my experience
How do they provide 400A on a 120V circuit? That would require more than 40 amps at 120V. Does it have a built-in battery, a large capacitor bank, or does it just rely on circuit breakers being slow to trip on a 200% load?
Thanks for showing/explaining the controls... it looks horribly confusing. With the weird zig zags inter connecting, especially if you need to use it outdoors in low light to charge 4 battery Semis. Quality American product.. but poorly labeled controls.
I bought one today perfect condition for $30 bucks at a yard sale
this thing is $1000+ wheeew
50 years ago you could get good battery chargers that worked, oh i forget you aren't that old.
Genius (well spoken) American product
I have a Shumacher for maybe 20 yrs. + it's the best.
The us20 us a great unit and I'd definitely recommend it.
Any advice?
Good video 👍
Century was also a great charger.
Thank you!

Me: Let's convert a welder into a battery charger...
