Emil saying "no one knows DLC more than us" says a lot about the internal attitude at BGS. To me it reads "we're so far up our own ass that anything we do is gold," which, as you explained, just isn't true anymore. As creatives and producers you still need to keep up and push boundaries. Similar story here. I hated Fallout 76, didn't defend it. But everything before that I loved. I have so many Bethesda games, thousands of hours sunk into them, including Fallout 4. But after 76 I was skeptical, and when Starfield came out I only managed to play for about 40 hours and then I just... couldn't stand it anymore. And I waited a year for Shattered Space to fix everything. In a year they fully transformed Fallout 4 -- it had SIX DLC in that time, some VERY good. But here with Starfield, I got 1 DLC and it didn't do ANYTHING to help resolve the base game's problems. At this point, I'm just done with Bethesda. They've lost me. They shoved me out the door and closed it, and I'm not looking for a way back in. I'll stay gone until a review says one of their games is the best thing ever, nearly flawless. Only then will I come back, because they've burned bridges with me too much.

The "DLCs" you describe are really just what was traditionally called an "expansion". BG 2's Shadows of Amn, "Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep" for Borderlands 2, all the expansions for various MMOs, and so on... The smaller bits were referred to as micro-transactions, even if they were barely ever priced at an actual micro level. Stuff like the Warden's Keep in DA:O, Fire in the Sky for ME2, and so on. But yeah, Shattered Space falls more into the "micro-transaction" area of DLC than an expansion, but is priced at expansion levels.
But honestly, I look at how people reacted to Starfield, and then at Bethesda's reaction to that reaction. I look at how lackluster the patches were, despite the glaring problems in Starfield. I look at how they once again try to monetize mods. It was obvious Shattered Space was going to be bad. Mind you, I think Bethesda really needed it to be good, for the sake of ES6 hype, but, well, the company is incapable of putting in the time and effort required to salvage their faltering reputation.

It's ironically almost certainly not Xbox's fault; I work at a MS owned studio, and if anything, the fault is a too hands-off approach from MS.
It's frustrating to me; I am in the business and DO know exactly what it would take to make meaningful improvements and don't understand how they haven't. Literally even one designer, one modeler, not even an engineer for a year should have been able to more meaningfully improve the game since launch than it has with Shattered Sky, 500 developers, in that same year.
I take no pleasure in saying this; Bethesda has been one of my favorite studios. I have almost 1800 hours in Fallout 4 alone, let alone Skyrim, let alone close to 500 hours in Starfield. I want to like Starfield; I really, really do. But it's so tough to see very simple, very cheap improvements that would drastically improve the game just not prioritized.

I recently noticed that myself, and I was shocked at how little content Starfield really has a year after release in comparison. Most of their past games had most or all of their major DLC add-ons released within a year after the base game's release, but what does Starfield have? It's not "toxic" to be honest. If something is bad, it's toxic to only talk about the good parts and minimize the negative parts. It would be equally as toxic to lie or exaggerate how bad something is when it's really not that big of a problem. DISHONESTY is what's toxic, not negativity.
Be negative, if that's what a game deserves. Tear into it... and do it _honestly._ Don't tell me Starfield "didn't click" with people or that Shattered Space "didn't connect with" its audience. Neither of those statements are honest. It's not that the audience didn't "vibe" with the game or the DLC. That is a false framing that blames the customers for the product being mediocre. It's toxic marketing-speak, and I'm sick of hearing it. Call something what it is and either blame or praise the producers accordingly. Nothing will ever improve if we're mired in toxic positivity.

I apologize if my speech is misunderstood by many. I am a Russian speaker and do not know English well).
In general, the longer I play Shattered Space, the more I don't understand all the negativity around DLS and such a low rating of the expansion. I don't understand even more than I didn't understand most of the negativity towards the base game (such a tautology).
The addition is very, very good.
The atmosphere (the most subjective thing) went with a bang for me. Inon Zur has written quite a few new excellent ambient, full of cosmic mysticism and occultism. In combination with local design, an abundance of various kinds of obelisks of bizarre shapes and sanctuaries, the surfaces of which are streaked with various kinds of hieroglyphs. All this breathes a Lovecraftian atmosphere. Bethesda loves to make references to its universe, here I fully agree with the tastes of the studio's artists. "Ph'nglui mglv'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh vgah'nagl fhtagn")).
A well-designed map and I did not experience problems with moving around the map on the Buggy (probably it is worth playing the game, probably it is worth learning and adapting to the peculiarities of transport and landscape in order to feel like a fish in water behind the wheel? A lot of new locations with a ton of interactive stories, Easter eggs, notes, audio recordings that help to understand the history of this world. Many locations are very pleasing with their elaboration and scale, yesterday probably about 1-1.5 hours I explored an underground farm (well, and its above-ground part), a bunch of notes, audio recordings, which as a result clarified the history of this location well, and some kind of quest appeared in the journal related to the characters who worked on this farm, and such a frail pack of enemies. The DLS perfectly conveys the classic mechanics of exploring the world in the spirit of Bethesda: you climb somewhere higher, look around, and see some.
There is a good quest aimed at exploring the world in an extremely classic style, well, Morrowind fans should have enjoyed it (Or are many only verbal fans of Morra, because respected uncles say that this is the Magnum opus of the Arbors and their opinion should be unconditionally broadcast everywhere, and they themselves have not really touched this creation?). The Path of Redemption: you just read the book and the path described in detail in it, follow this path in search of the right shrines, along the way finding a lot of new locations and stories. And in general, the quests in DLS are very good, I have not completed everything, but what I have already seen leaves positive emotions. The same quest with a dementia grandfather and a ghost following him in a ruined orphanage, if you are not one of those who just fly forward for loot, then you will see a close connection between these quests. The beginning of the dls itself was very intriguing, but after spending 5 hours on it, I didn't really touch the main plot, leaving it for later. I haven't touched it so much that I still can't buy anything from local merchants.
But no, everyone listens to their favorite bloggers and collapses the rating of the add-on to the point of absurdity, justifying themselves with a small number of weapons and armor and the lack of new parts for the ship... point-blank not noticing a lot of good quests, a variable story, a well-developed map and a bunch of new, diverse entries.
Suddenly, there were not enough guns for everyone in the game... Willy-nilly, you will believe in the schizophrenic conspiracy theories that some people who went here and there express in the comments, that competitors are deliberately sinking the studio...)) Well, many people believe in a manual comparing some game that needs to be sold with Mass Effect 2. It's time to believe about the manual of the wretchedness of DLS because of the number of weapons and armor🌚 in it, and to dump on all other aspects of the add-on what kind of objective (NO) - Boring.....

Cut content, polished and repackaged to be sold as DLC is something of an insult to the intelligence of the players in my view. But that’s been the bass ackwards model Bethesda has obtusely clung to with Starfield since its inception.
Instead of coming up with a great story and a compelling protagonist to play as, in a universe populated by other compelling characters, with a world that has internal logic and makes sense, Bethesda thought the, “ambition,” of giving us 1,000 planets and dealing with the technical difficulties that presents would win them a medal or something.
They didn’t even achieve that goal, which is why all the loading screens. And they expect Modders to fix it all for them, whilst charging players for that privilege! And if you play on XBox you’re stuffed.
And any constructive criticism is met with either flat out anger or passive aggression. Their chief story writer didn’t even KNOW that ALL stories begin with the protagonist and the characters FIRST! You build your world around them! They just came up with a sterile bunch of loading screens and badly animated, barely varying creatures to catalogue; starting on a planet which is the home base for these, “explorers,” who have not even, “explored,” let alone catalogued and recorded, all the wild animals and plants that are LITERALLY on their DOORSTEP!
This game makes me so angry! It could have been great! If they’d just hired a half decent WRITER! This game is illogical, childish, patronisingly, offensively, “inoffensive,” and populated by characters who make no sense, break the internal logic of their universe with every other sentence and only get in the way of you take them anywhere!
Such a wasted opportunity and an exploitative business model deserves to flop.

There are actually people that praise Starfield as a very deep game and think that the 97% of bad reviews are people with no imagination. You place Emil around these people and he will pump and grind out masterpieces for these people. I am ok with this as to each their own but for me I will not even reinstall it to try out the DLC. Great video. Bethesda needs to be pressured into either A. Making great games again or B. Letting a more competent developer like Obsidian (Fall Out New Vegas anyone?) make some games with their IP’s. They hoard their beloved IP’s while squandering their fans trust & money on nonsense like Fallout 76 & Starfield. 2 bland, soulless, boring, crappy games. Imagine a timeline where they didn’t do that, and instead made ES6 (what their fans actually f-cking wanted) and embraced the best aspects of Fallout New Vegas into their subsequent games. The missed opportunity is staggering. We should stop giving this company money until things change, I for one have made that decision already. I’ll be over here playing Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3 & Cyberpunk 2.0 & other great games and will only support Bethesda when/if they get their sh*t together

Most of us aren't asking Bethesda for a masterpiece. We just want a competent game.
Bethesda has only delivered disappointment and boredom with Fallout 4, F76, and Starfield. Ok Fallout 4 was almost playable after a billion mods but still it was a mediocre Fallout game.
I actually liked all Fallout 4, F76, and yes I liked Starfield... but they feel abysmal compared to my first time playing Morrowind and Skyrim.

    @RandomWandrer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Very fair. I actually loved Starfield. I had zero expectations, and it blew me away. I played a few hundred hours before I was done and moved on. I was always going to return for DLC.
I had really high hopes for Shattered Space. It looked like it would be scary (i love Dead Space), and when they said "hand crafted" i was imagining a fallout map full of stories and depth and grit. Certainly a whole year and 30 dollars was enough for that.
The last DLC i bought for 30 dollars was the Tales of Arise expansion. It was wonderful. It was 20ish hours more of great story, exploring what happens in a world still healing after the 'hero' ends the 'big bad'. And they actually redesigned every city in the world, to show the change and new issues, when a whole culture is released from slavery, so i could see how my hero's journey changed everything. It was so good.
Shattered space was... well... i guess it was more starfield. They added a major city, on par with Akhila or Atlantis or Neon or the Key. With its own similar faction questline and similar amount of side content. So i would place its "value" around 15 dollars (a bit less than a quarter of the base game).
I took my time with it, exploring all the stuff outside the city. There are good little surprises and side quests. But... i dunno. I wasnt hungry for more. The writing was just really dry. It was hard to care about anyone from varuun. Its passion thats missing.
Sometimes i play games that are 10-20 years old. Being dated really doesn't matter when the writing is stellar and the stakes are high and i fear for characters. Look at the old resident evil (biohazard) games, or chrono games, or final fantasy 6/7/8. They look rough theae days.
But, OH, the stories they tell!
Its impressive how much Emil writes. But a whole team of passionate writers are needed to offer sprawling epic stories with truly different characters.

Note - When Oblivion came out, a lot of us were disappointed that we went from the crazy but believable world of Morrowind to a generic European fantasy setting. Shivering Isles was a direct answer to 'this world is too bland.' THAT'S the difference - in 2006, Bethesda listened to player concerns, took them seriously, and gave us gorgeous DLC that mixed things up a little. Skyrim trended toward some of the simplification woes we have discussed a lot, but the Dragonborn DLC, beside giving us a new story, was a love letter to Morrowind, and gave the players a million Morrowind references and assets to love and mod. They used to work WITH us. Now they're like Blizzard, telling us if we don't like the content there's something wrong with us, not the content.

I confess: the main story and some secondary ones (the faction, for example) are very good in my opinion, even if the execution is a bit questionable. Even after finishing the other activities, no other ones were provided. Regrettable.
