  • A popular matrix used in protein blotting because of their high protein-binding affinity, compatibility with a variety of detection methods (chemiluminescence, chromogenic, and fluorescence), and the ability to immobilize proteins, glycoproteins, or nucleic acids.
Nitrocellulose (cellulose nitrate) is a highly flammable compound formed by nitrating cellulose through exposure to a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. One of its first major uses was as guncotton, a replacement for gunpowder as propellant in firearms.
Each glucose unit in the cellulose polymer is esterified with three nitrate groups, and these nitrate groups are responsible for both the negative charge of nitrocellulose at neutral pH and the unusual flammability of dry nitrocellulose.
