Yep the problem with owning, or buying a house built before 1950 is that these are the types of problems you're going to run into. Video like this are much appreciated, because conventional dIY vids on home repair pretty much all assume you're working with newer houses built after pvc became the standard. Definitely among the best and most thorough old school toilet/flange replacement videos out there even after almost a decade.
That's a real good flange replacement job. I also hate the metal between the tank and bowl!Had to learn the hard way. Worked my way from the ghetto to the 3million dollar homes. Lot of hard work paid the price loved it all.
Great video. Great camera angles. Some people that post How-To videos don't realize that with the right camera angles, so viewers can see what you're doing, it makes learning so much easier to follow.
Thanks for the video. Been looking for this technique. The only thing i can say negatively is move your tool box and fo another one please. The main thing i needed to see was adding the lead. I picture is worth a thousand words. Impressive work. Thank you.
Based on your very thorough, competent videos, my boyfriend and I tackled a challenging repair with a great outcome. Thank you for showing us how it works. Also, your accent and awesome demeanor make me homesick for NYC!
I'm a diyer myself!! I like your style with the crescent wrench and pipe wrench... I was taught by my neighbor a long time ago to never use wrenches that have a chance to strip or scratch your plumbing parts etc!!! Some people with ocd might bitch he said lol!!! No channel locks lol... I wish he was still alive today for me to thx him!! My family careers are in the corporate world as is mine but, I really enjoy doing wood working, plumbing, whole house remodeling etc...I saved thousands with what my neighbor taught me!!! I've made some money doing diy things on the side!!! This is a great video, Ive learned something new!!!
How to Fix a Broken Cast Iron Toilet Flange by a true professional. This is a very well done video that illustrates every necessary detail involved in properly replacing a cast iron toilet flange, on a cast iron toilet drain stack. 35 minutes well invested in learning how to do it the right way.
I have been waiting since 1988 to see this. I worked for St. Mary Medical Center in Gary IN back then, was over zealous cleaning around a flange while changing a wax ring. Broke an ear off the flange. Our union plumber got mad at me, and wouldn't let me watch him put in a new flange, with lead and oakum. Thank you Steve! Great job!
First Professional plumber I have seen on You Tube. My Plumber did the same thing when my old cast iron flange broke on my new American standard toilet. IKoehler is pretty much junk IMO. I have Moen fixtures. Great video and that should last a long time. Couldn't exactly see my plumber do it because my bath is small. Thanks ! Other videos were nothing but patches and quick fixes
Hello Steven, awesome, thanks for sharing this technique, 35 years and I,ve never seen it actually done. I inherited a set of caulking irons and have never used them. I have a curved one for removing old lead I have used a few times, but always repaired with plastic. Nice job I enjoyed looking over your shoulder.
Good video. Held his composer as well. "Gunna fill this bitc..baby right up". Love it. As a man in HVAC, it is difficult at times to hold back your tongue in front of a customer. Good job Steve-o. Oh and your plumbing was on point as well.
Stellar video from start to finish. You are truly a master plumber. Watching you heat up that lead on your toolbox was awesome! This video was tremendously helpful.
I don't understand Steve, how people could give you a thumbs down, the job was done correctly you even changed out the water valve, what were they expecting for you to also do the tile work. anyway Great Job again!
my dad talked about this when his dad put in toilets and drain fields with clay pipe and lead. Never seen this done THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS! IT WAS GREAT.
Hi Steve, I'm buying a 1910 Craftsman and I can see the iron plumbing pipes. I know one toilet is slightly wobbly upstairs and I'll be taking it off to check the connection. I'm an avid watcher of your videos and you've given me and my Son a lot of knowledge from radiators and how a boiler works to how to fix a leaky toilet. Now we just need a bunch of tools, the right parts and determination! Man you are the best and your dog is cute too, btw- love that she goes with you on nice days. THANKS!!
Thank you for your posts on replacing toilets and all that goes along with it. I have watched your videos for two days, not wanting to work on my leaky toilet. How ever a job that my step-dad said the whole pluming needed to be replaced was not so bad with your instructional help. The smashing you did on another video...The green toilet was funny to watch. Thanks again!
I figured you did. You are very talented, You have mastered both plumbing and hvac. I bet you stay busy all year, Again great videos. You just got another subscriber.
Hey thanks allot for your videos. I also live in Texas (with iron pipes) and had to install a wax seal. Thankfully due to watching this and then researching more afterward I did not put in a wax ring with the plastic insert. But you know what? That was what caused my problem. Fortunately my iron flange was in good shape but if I hadn't seen your video I would never have known about the problems the wax ring with inserts cause. Yep, the old school plumbers all mirror what you said and I went wax seal only, worked like a charm. A big Thank You! for teaching us DIY'ers something important.
Glad to see you went old school. Most guys would have used an insert flange.Hack! I was tought 30 years ago by my DAD And use this method as well! Awesome Video Steve!!!
Well done Steve.. that flange is going to be around long time and we'll be likely be be expired.. great message again thank you for your work and message.. Robert Jr NJ here Asbury Park
Mr SL , I always wanted to come to The USA and do some plumbing in my youth, time has passed me by mate . Still fascinated by American plumbing, thanks for the vids mate 🇬🇧👍👌👍🇬🇧👍👌🇬🇧
In addition to the actual subject matter, thanks for all the extra handy hints (regarding pedestal sinks, Kohler, and so on) - I'm learning so much! Even if I never have the guts to do my own plumbing, your insight will help me be a better customer. :)
I don't understand the difference between using this method with the cast iron replacement flange/the oakum/melted lead, and using the PVC replacement flange on the cast iron piping. Thank you, Mr. Lavinmoniere for walking me through this and with your other vids.
Watched it out and gotta say cool vid. I've never came across a cast flange before in Canada. Have came across many a lead stub and had to 30/70 rebuild them over the years to set a new mounting flange. Have experienced pouring horizontal and vertical lead oakum joints, but never came across a toilet flange here, thanks
Great video, very helpful. As far as the toilet being level, by the looks of that house, the new closet flange is now holding up the bathroom floor. I like to clean out the nipple before installing the new shutoff; we have hard water out west and a lot of old galvanized pipes. They seem to plug off near the end at the valve. You are definitely a Master Plumber out there doing it right.
Have seen these old caulking irons before and never knew how they were used. This is a lesson in time travel that has taught me something new. Also has anyone else thought that that was an new use for a spirit level.. a leg for a lavatory 🤔
Nice job , I'm getting ready to do one in a trailer that was built in 1974 , not sure what I'm going to find . My floor around the toilet is rotten so got to do it , it's cool to watch a pro do this , thanks for posting an in depth video .👍👍
Great Video, Very helpful... I am going to attempt this tomorrow.. Looks easy enough.. I will be at plumbing store first thing in the morning.. Thanks for the video!!!
Nice work. Going in to determine what’s going on with a toilet in a 130-140 yr old house today just the video I needed hoping it’s not this major. Cheers
great video, and repair. i remember when my dad used to melt lead for cast pipe in the basement, used a propane tank with set up to support a a pot to melt lead, he poured alot of lead ,. thanks for posting
thanks a lot! this is exactly what i needed. both of the blots on mine rusted to the flange and snapped off so the toilet is free flowing. i tried removing the rust, but it was so bad that i still cant get the bolts out, and even if i could i wouldnt trust the strength of the flange. after this im definitely going to look into more of your videos. keep up the good work
That's the first time I ever seen that done and you can tell he is a professional but I was wanting to see him pour the lead in but the toolbox was in the way of the camera.Still that was a fantastic job
thanks for your time an effort on making this videos they are very helpful great work and is very nice your sharing your knowledge keep up the good work
They have those metal brackets to bolt the tank to the toilet here in the UK too, and you're right, it's a pain in the ass, rusts away in a couple yrs! Awesome to see someone still has the skills to do proper caulking
Nic vid Steve. I actually watch the entire vid. Iam not a Plummer but it was interesting to watch liked the u melt that lead and how u used it. Was cool to watch.
We had the same system at our home. Wife wanted new toilet. Instead of dealing with packing and pouring lead, I just cut the cast iron pipe with reciprocating saw and installed PVC pipe, new flange and connected to main stack with a fernco band.
LOL, nice flushing mechanism. Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks for the videos man. With my wife not working the need to DIY is critical these days. Your videos really really truly helped. Hope all goes well with you.
you gotta do a video on how to make that siphon pump. I love that thing!!! And I also love that well-seasoned nut driver and socket. Lotta years on that baby, huh? I'm an auto mechanic tool geek, forgive me haha
Thank you for another great video showing to do things right. Really puts to shame a lot of people for the crap they try to pass off as quality work. Love your accent reminds me of grandfather and his friends. May I suggest an idea? People can find you info by the about page but you might want to include it in the description of the video or at least your location. I was bummed you weren't local by a long shot. Your videos speak pretty clearly why some should hire you. Even with you showing people how to do repairs and making it seem easy, anyone with realistic self assessment can see where they need to let the pro come in and do it right.
+niklasarbast complicated ??? its a piece of cake .i seen how things are done in the u.k. different parts of the world do thing differently .this is only one way . there are many other ways to fix this problem also .
this is so old school the only thing they use now is a lead flang a brass flang and some wax. ihave heard of them using it this way for the pipes lead wool and the okum but never have i seen it done for the toilets beautiful job.
Great job there Steve! At least you didn't have the crummy tile job to work around this time. Still catching up on your vids from day one... Tons of great info in these vids!! Keep 'em coming! And keep setting off those smoke alarms! ;-) Pete
Im about to do this tomorrow. Toilet base edges started "browning". A lot of water spilling out. One closet screw busted and toilet is freely moving. wish me luck. Thanks for your helpful videos.
Damn nice work; that's how I was taught twenty years ago and still use it a couple times a month. Awesome video and great example of how to do it right.
Hey Steve Great video!! Just wondered the plumbers I worked with did whole house with cast iron they would pack all oakum then fill pipes with water to wet the oakum and ket it swell overnight then do lead next day. Ever hear of that step?

+Don Burton he got mad at you lol to funny
Those old cranky union guys were like that it was probably one of our dads lmao
This guy knows what he’s doing.
Does that make me recall the days when my dad and me put in the inside toilet at our home. Like 1958!!! Thanks for the show as always great job guy.

LOL, nice flushing mechanism. Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks for the videos man. With my wife not working the need to DIY is critical these days. Your videos really really truly helped. Hope all goes well with you.
