It's really simple. The Canon T3i Rebel/600D for users more interested in film; the Nikon D5100 for people more into photography. If you want both, Canon T3i/600D all the way.
They're pretty much the same. I both love these cameras. And I believe photos depends on the photographers not on cameras. Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just tools. Just go around and enjoy taking pictures. Photography is really fun :)
I know that this is an older video. But I've been browsing some photography videos talking about various lenses. Kind of crazy that the D5100 is now what...12 years old? I started with the D5100 and it's what I learned in college while getting my bachelor of science in Graphic Design. I still use the camera to this day. I even took it with me to Ireland in 2018 and got some amazing once in a life time shots.
In 20% of the things Canon is maybe better. In the rest 80% Nikon is definitely better. I did very extensive research and am super happy with the D5100 even after 2 years of use.

+Truong Nguyen actually for the most part Nikon is known to have warmer colors and Canon is generally neutral tone. I think just in this case it was the opposite, but generally between the two Nikon has the warmer colors. I noticed it when I had a D80 and notice this with their full frame low cost DSLR's. The other exception to Canon is the 7D, it's very contrasty and not neutral
***** Depends on the type on Canon camera that you have. A canon that is not a DSLR has Auto focus. DSLR's have Manual Focus unless you have a lense that is AF.
great share You can get this camera on sale now on www.photolg.com/canoneosrebelt3i for anyone looking for it with the lens kit. Canons are great for hd
And that the Nikon doesn't have in-body metering so you have to make sure you're using lenses with meters built into them and that it doesn't have full manual control for video.
D5100 is a great camera. The Nikon D5100 brings the high quality 16.2 megapixel sensor, great low-light performance, and full HD video. Click for pricing info : #amzn.to/1fsGSof
I have used Canon and Nikon for the rest of my photographer life. And I found out the differences between the two. When taking pictures, Canon capture it so dramatic. While Nikon capture it with full of emotions, full of life. When it comes to video filming, Canon is the best thing you can use. Clearer and smoother than Nikon. Experiencing Nikon's video is not so good as Canon's. Better to use a phone's video instead of Nikon. Just saying'. But all in all, I'd say that Nikon takes pictures better than Canon. But still Canon can take pictures like how Nikon do, but in a dramatic way. But Canon takes videos and films way better than Nikon.
The news was out Nov.6. The biggest improvement is the 24.1 effective megapixels. It could be out in American market in early 2013. The Nikon D5200 body weighs 505g and will be available in black, red and bronze upon its December release date. The Nikon D5200 price body only will be £719.99 / €899.00, while the D5200 price tag jumps to £819.99 / €1029.00 for the 18-55mm VR lens kit.
Ponselgraphy you are technically right. But fiddling around with ugly Nikon colors in Lightroom is not fun as well I heard in some reviews... But why so few people have Nikon ... must be the lenses... I started with Canon and a system change would be pricey
Brilliant channel, you do sound a bit like that nice tv presenter on Top Gear, Jonathan ... I lived in HK for 11 years love your vid's..I am about to purchase the Canon Rebel 3ti....What's new???where did you train and where did you grow up.
I'm getting a 600D soon and I chose it over the nikon mostly because of video mode since I do car spotting and fully adjustable audio settings and good audio quality are a must.
Such great video! Thank you. Only now i way more confused. everyone recommend to buy the nikon D5100, but after comparing it to Canon camera i realized that i find Canon colors much more to my taste. The colors are more strong and deep, you can see way better the light and the dark areas in the picture. Nikon colors are very bright so the picture look very flat to my opinion. so i don't know which one to choose. any advice? please...
600D, due the better video quality. And if video is important to you I would say you get at least a 650D, because of the auto-focus in video mode functionality.
I started out with a T3i about 15 months ago, with almost no knowledge of DSLRs at all. But with a bit of advice from my dad, and about 2 hours of Kai talking about random crap, I have now progressed immensely, even to sell 3 photos (from my T3i) to shutterfly for a good amount of money. With that (and "some" extra) I bought a 7D, and i still often go back to my T3i.
I own the T3i and recently I had a chance to play with the Nikon D5100. At first glance they appear very similar, As soon as I grabbed the Nikon to check the swivel screen, it was lighter. The construction of the D5100 seems flimsier, the Canon is more solid. The free availability of Magic Lantern was the reason I went with the Canon. The two together make a film camera equal to those that cost $3-4000 or more, and the 4-2-0 luma / chroma ratio is the best you can dream of at this price.
Still in doubt, which one should I buy? I am going to do street photography, skateboarding, levitation, long exposures, and stuff like that. Are there any features that the Canon has and the Nikon not, or the Nikon has and the Canon not? And is it possible to do double exposures with one of these or not? Thanks a lot!
This is the worst comparison of two cameras. You didn't tell anything unique from your experience. You did not compare photos nor videos. Your conclusion was super stupid. Unsubscribing.
I have the Nikon D5100 and I love it, but honestly both cameras are really good so you will be happy with either. I would make a decision depending on which high-end camera you might upgrade to and potential lenses you plan on buying.
To answer your question, the Canon can record at 60 fps in 720p compared to only 30 fps of the Nikon. If you're looking for a good comparison, type Canon T3i Rebel vs Nikon D5100 into google and check out the first hit by cameralabs
Ridingx Villain don't know, every camera has its pro's and cons i guess... it just need to fit yourself i guess I like the canon 600d too ( i now have sony bridgecamera hx 300 and want to get the 600d )
I did what Alambi said. I went to the store and had a look at the two cameras. Before I went, I was convinced that the Canon 600D was better, but I changed my mind when I picked up the Nikon. I liked the grip better, the autofocus was more useful and I really liked the effects on the Nikon. Deffo getting a Nikon D5100.
To me, yes it is a good dslr camera for beginners to understand how to use dslr for their first time. I recently brought the 60d because i already know the basic on how to use ISO.shutter speed, and aperture. Plus it's my first dslr i own. So Yes i recommend you get the t3i for video/film with the TECHICOLOR cinestyle color grading to help you get that film look. Also with the cinestyle added to your T3i you can take photo's to help you get that nice color grading you want. Ask me for more Q's!
I can recommend both for you, but It's up to you for the decision because it's what suites you.. :) the key factors should be: 1. Price 2. Comfort in the hands 3. Ease of use.. I have used both and I say that I really like them both, but for me I sealed the deal with a 600D because it fits my hand properly and the button placement is really nice for me, the D5100 was also a good camera, but I didn't choose it because I found the grip quite small.. but I did enjoy the experience..
i used to be in ur situation, but finally i figured out the best choice for me. If you gonna shoot a lot of video, go for D5100 bc it has the flip-out screen which gonna come in handy when it comes to shoot at tricky angles If slow motion video is VERY IMPORTANT to you then go for the d3200 because it can shoot 720p at 60fps which is ideal for slow motion video. I chose the D3200 because i wanna get used to shooting without flippy screen and do slow mo videos(pro dslrs dont have flippy screen)
What Kai says to pick is what he would use. Most people misunderstand reviews and get the camera they like. A review is basically a review of the cameras [hence the title] and saying the different priorities: take this for example, the Nikon D5100 can't change the aperture in video mode, while the Canon 600D can. If you're into video, the canon 600D is probably the better choice for you.
aren't there certain settings that allow more muted colour renditions? and for editing purposes, i would think that raw files would be used more in place of jpg.. so the difference in ease (or difficulty) between the two would be minimalized. just my two cents', correct me if im wrong, learning too!
Why are you not going back? I am currently in the market for a new DSLR, I have been considering the Nikon 5100 but I am also interested in doing some movie shooting on the side. I have heard that cannons are better for movies. Any advice?
I'm not bored by the shutter speed, aperture and ISO etc. I'm going to buy the Nikon D5100 because I think it will help me learn a bit more, and also i tried them both out and prefer the grip of the Nikon like Kai.
I'm trying to figure out which one of these to buy for video shooting. I'm shooting short movies and I decided to upgrade the gear I have. However, I have the same question that most of the people are asking here. Which one is better for video shooting. I mean I think nikon is one step ahead with the auto focus feature however, is there anything else that I should consider before buying one of these? Thank you in advance. Great video.
Seems the nikon is a bit more "beginner" The canon video manual focus can force you to become better with focusing lenses, thereby better with a camera. Are you using kit lenses on both cams? Was the noise that far apart on the two?
Also if you're into film making the 600d is is fantastic. Make sure you get a nice prime lens and you're good to go. These SLRs have a natural shallow depth of field and if you muck about with the ISO you can get some choice low-light shots.
so which one would you buy , Im planning to do cars panning and long exposures photos, but I would also like to take landscapes video to turn them into dreamscene animated backgrounds. . . And to be honest, its really hard to choose between these two .. so what you think? (BTW I can edit pictures) I'm more preoccupied about noise ! I HATE IT
I am going to Germany this Summer and am completely stuck with which one of these cameras I want! While I am there I will use the camera for scenery and maybe some portraits. I also have horses and really want a camera that would be good with action shots. Which one is better for that canon or Nikon?
The biggest decider between these two is what range of cameras and lenses you want to commit to down the road. These cameras perform VERY similarly and are inexpensive. But switching over for your next body... That said, in this flat light Nikon's images look particularly flat. Mostly to do with Canon's aggressive in-camera lighting compensation and colour repro, I suspect.
Technical question here. I heard something about the canon rebels using an APS-C sensor which gives it an x1.6 zoom, making 50mm lenses look like how an 81mm lens would look in a 35mm camera. Is this the same case for the Nikon?? I might just get a nikon the next time..
This is completely off topic; but, I was wondering do you use a 4k display or do you go with a 1080 display? If you don't do you think it is neccesary to get one to monitor 4k footage?
I am considering these two cameras for some astrophotography and some amateur music videos. Swivel lcd of these two comes in handy for both the purposes. What do you people suggest??
I record video with the d5100. it doesn't suck that bad. audio level adjustments? I use an external audio recorder, much higher quality than any dslr with a mic input. manual settings? well if you use ais, afd, or any lens with an aperture ring, you get control over the aperture. manual exposure for video? just use exposure compensation. sure manual settings for video aren't how they should be, but the camera is still just as capable. and the low light performance is better than the canon.
Hey Kai, i dont know if you will reply but i really need your help! Im leading up to buying my first dslr and i am going to get on of these two cameras but i donmt know wich one to buy :( i am doing photography in school and i will be taking pictures of skateboarding. i will probably use the video more as i want to film skateboarding and short films so i need slow motion. thanks for reading. i appreiciate your opinion
Just bought the 5100 brand new for only $450. The cheapest I could find the T3i new, factory sealed was $520 (plus tax on this one, so $565). $115 difference really helped make it an easy choice :)
You again. The Nikons menus and layout is more user friendly -in general. My stated focusing feature was not the highlight nor thesis of my initial statement.
I don't know whether to get a Canon 600D or the new Nikon D5200? Can someone please get back to me, as I would like to know which one is better for videography and photography + low light performance, if you could tell me then that would be great!
I wanna shoot crisp movies like the rebel seems to have, but I also wanna take real good pictures like the Nikon..Is there any clear advantage to either that should make me want to buy one over the other??
Kai's point in this video is that they're both good cameras. The reason why his reviews are good is that he doesn't bring statistics into the mix, he just goes by what he feels and notices which is really the only important thing. Technically I think the D5100 is superior because it uses the same sensor as the more expensive D7000. But really, it's about the person taking photos. If you're beginning photography, you probably won't appreciate features that have trivial differences.
At the moment i have a Canon 1100D and its a brilliant camera, but i now want to upgrade to a better more advanced camera. I don't know whether to stick to canon and go for something like the Canon 600D or change to Nikon and go for the Nikon D5100.
How do they compare to the Canon Rebel T5i? The salesclerk at our local camera shop is really pushing the Rebel as the best beginner DSLR. Been putting off the purchase for almost 3 months now. Seems every expert has a complete opposite review then the next expert. Would love to hear your guys' thoughts.
I bought both lol, used ones, first bought T3i and like it, then saw ocasion so bought that Nicon D5100 also used, now I try them both, and will decide in future which one to keep, so far I can tell that Canon's picture is more clear but not did yet much photos
Probably more people would recommend a Canon. The image quality seems to be a bit better, but this may be a subjective call, as it could depend on the settings. Also Canon is known to produce a slightly warm image, if you like that, which I do. I'd try the two out in-store if you can, get a feel for the controls, then go with whichever one feels more intuitive for YOU, whichever one feels more comfortable to you. If you listen, the camera will speak.
I bought myself 600d and i tested both before my decision... there is a huuuuge gap between two... not only to taking pictures but more to photoshop or lightroom
Yeah! I'm getting the kit lens 18-55mm for wide angle shots and getting the 35mm F1.8 (Or 50mm depends on how much money I will have) and 70-300mm for telephoto! These are the best lenses I found for $200 or less! BTW... since you own a D5100 Can you use a Crop Mode when recording videos?? It's 1.5 by default but some people increase it to 2.5 when recording videos on specific cameras to get more range... (Like shooting the moon)
D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000 , the D5100 handles low light images very well for it's price tag, the fact that it does not have an inbuilt motor is not something to be put off by as you can always focus manually and it's best to do that any way or to at least learn how :)
I don't see the big difference I have had both and the Nikon is more crisp while the t3i is sorta the same but more washed out but the canon is more expensive as soon as I got to play around with this cam I sold the t3i so fast........
Obviously I'm not Kai, but I do know that the Canon can shoot in 720p at 60fps, which is good for slow motion. As far as I'm aware, the Nikon doesn't do that, but I could be wrong.
I brought my D5100 to a party this weekend. It performs much much much better in photography than the Lumix GH1, if anyone is interested. I used the same lens, Helios 44-2, and can compare the difference.
Wichita camara should I buy I think both a really good cause I wanted to buy one to record my friends while when theyr bmxing. What kind of camara make the walls or something close circular ?
I am looking to purchase a dslr mainly for shooting video (skateboarding videos to be exact) and i am wondering if i should get the nikon d5100 or t3i. Any advice?
actually as a photographer ... the best tip that i can give to you all is when you at the camera shop try to hold both of camera .... choose the one that make you comfortable .. that the best tips i can give to you .. doesnt care about the brand ...
Well, you can pick base on nikon and canon performances. Nikon has a nice rich color(warm) that can be useful for taking great photos. While canon is great for filming because you can install the techicolor cinestyle for that great film look! Nikon of course has better overall quality of photo's while Canon has better quality in film/video. So now your thinking, what do i want photo or video?
im am debating on the two but since the nikon has 2 megapixels less than the canon does it still make the photography better than the canon? help please!
i was in the store and had to make that exakt choice. finally i bought the nikon. i´m pretty happy with it. i think espacially the effects are very cool when it comes to making videos (eg the selective colour and the silhouette effects are pretty cool in films). but the main problem about the nikon is, that when it comes to dark areas, the iso isn´t performing good enough in my opinion.
Yahoo won't allowed internet link, but do your DD on Google on "Nikon D5200" I have an Nikon D5100 with an Tamron 18-270mm. If you don't have a budget for an higher price and / or you want to know if it suit your usage, D5100 is a good bet.
It's really simple. The Canon T3i Rebel/600D for users more interested in film; the Nikon D5100 for people more into photography. If you want both, Canon T3i/600D all the way.
I swear, I took a picture of the sun and the Canon T5i said "This needs flash!"
+Lasley Media Group hahahahahaha

Because of strong back lighting?
They're pretty much the same. I both love these cameras. And I believe photos depends on the photographers not on cameras. Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just tools. Just go around and enjoy taking pictures. Photography is really fun :)

Look, I love nikon... but 600D obviously had superior color. Was it set to a more vibrant setting? If so, unfair review.
No, it wasn't. I made my decision to buy canon based on this. Canon seems to have a warmer color whereas nikon is cooler. Some people might like that.

I've never really understood it, I own the D7000 and it's pretty good. But Nikons really don't live up to the Canons when shooting video.
Can u make a video comparing Nikon d5200 and canon 600d with a final result about which one to buy.
First appearance of Alamby?

if your doing video get the t3i because it shoots 60fps in 720p and 30fps in 1080p
The nikon only shoots 25fps in both 1080 and 720
haha thats the same reason why im getting a camera :P

the 5100 only shoots 25 i have it

i second that, nice profile photo as well, love the S13
R.S. Macs thanks. (180sx actually) Funny thing related to the video is that I took the photo with a Nikon d5100.

Yes my friend has a Canon 6D and I always felt that the colours were a bit too bright. I'm still swaying between the D5100 & the 600D though.
i used to be in ur situation, but finally i figured out the best choice for me.
If you gonna shoot a lot of video, go for D5100 bc it has the flip-out screen which gonna come in handy when it comes to shoot at tricky angles
If slow motion video is VERY IMPORTANT to you then go for the d3200 because it can shoot 720p at 60fps which is ideal for slow motion video.
Any advice?
Would you say that either the d5100 or 600d would be the best beginner dslr cameras?
Im deciding between the two, i mostly want it for making youtube video vlogs and stuff. i would take pics too, but which one would you recommend?
I did some comprehensive research and asking around a number of people and decided on the Nikon D5100. Bought it yesterday, it's a nice camera.
May I know why? I'm just confused to select between these two.. Could you please tell me what makes you to like Nikon D5100?
Seems the nikon is a bit more "beginner"
The canon video manual focus can force you to become better with focusing lenses, thereby better with a camera.
Liked your video and comparisons, one question what camera did you use for shooting this video?
If you want a camera for video, get the Sony a57. It shoots 1080/60p. It also auto focuses way faster.
Would it be worth to chose one of these Cameras over the other if there is some Gadgets like lenses in the Family?
You again. The Nikons menus and layout is more user friendly -in general. My stated focusing feature was not the highlight nor thesis of my initial statement.
Wich of those two is better for close up videos of machinery and macro shots of electronic boards?
Hey, i would be glad if you did a video for Canon 650D and Nikon 5200 since both are upgrades to the ones you've done.
I want a camera which can take quality pictures. Which one do u suggest out of these two
At the moment i have a Canon 1100D and its a brilliant camera, but i now want to upgrade to a better more advanced camera.
Would love to hear your guys' thoughts.
is it worth the money in terms of image quality when compared to a modern smartphone?
Nikon D5100 vs Canon EOS 4000 ? See them around the same price, give or take (former a bit more). Entry level hobbyist asking. Thanks
Hi Kai, I'm upgrading from D3000, not sure if I should go D5100 or be brave and go D7000? Great Vid dude
Yeah!
I'm getting the kit lens 18-55mm for wide angle shots and getting the 35mm F1.8 (Or 50mm depends on how much money I will have) and 70-300mm for telephoto!
These are the best lenses I found for $200 or less!
BTW... since you own a D5100
Can you use a Crop Mode when recording videos??
It's 1.5 by default but some people increase it to 2.5 when recording videos on specific cameras to get more range... (Like shooting the moon)
D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000 , the D5100 handles low light images very well for it's price tag, the fact that it does not have an inbuilt motor is not something to be put off by as you can always focus manually and it's best to do that any way or to at least learn how :)
Do you think a canon camera like the 600d could be used to film a whole film?
It's so funny to me to see an asian guy with Buckingam Palace accent. You make good reviews, funny and well made. Continue!
which one is good to take pictures of moving object and still have a sharp picture
I don't see the big difference I have had both and the Nikon is more crisp while the t3i is sorta the same but more washed out but the canon is more expensive as soon as I got to play around with this cam I sold the t3i so fast........
Are both cameras ready for an external microphone?
Obviously I'm not Kai, but I do know that the Canon can shoot in 720p at 60fps, which is good for slow motion. As far as I'm aware, the Nikon doesn't do that, but I could be wrong.
I brought my D5100 to a party this weekend. It performs much much much better in photography than the Lumix GH1, if anyone is interested. I used the same lens, Helios 44-2, and can compare the difference.
Panasonic G1/G2/GH2/G3 the 2x crop factor making your 300mm lens 600mm and so light weiht your arm doesn't drop off is just awsome.
I LOVE your videos for when Im trying to decide things to buy... informative and hilarious :)
Any advice?
actually as a photographer ... the best tip that i can give to you all is when you at the camera shop try to hold both of camera .... choose the one that make you comfortable .. that the best tips i can give to you .. doesnt care about the brand ...
the brand kinda matters, cuz you'll probably be investing in glass and upgrade bodies, so think what you wanna be sticking with.
There is another thing to note about the noise handling. The EOS 600D is an entry level and the D5100 is mid range. So the results are reasonable.
Yahoo won't allowed internet link, but do your DD on Google on "Nikon D5200"
I have an Nikon D5100 with an Tamron 18-270mm. If you don't have a budget for an higher price and / or you want to know if it suit your usage, D5100 is a good bet.
