I've been watching a lot of photography-centric TH-cam videos and yours by far are the most easily-digestible and informative. Great work. Just subscribed.
@syton745 - No, that's only aperture priority control. You can't control the shutter speed AND aperture for video on the D5100 which is what manual control refers to.
Thank you for this one! I read a dozen other reviews and comparisons, and still could not understand what is going on.. You put it simple and to the point. Great!
@amccune - You can't do video in manual mode on the D3100. It will still be controlling the exposure during video recording. You can manually focus your lens.
@podchong - the Sony A580 does have the same sensor as the D5100 and D7000, but you're much more limited with the Sony lens line-up. Another thing to consider is re-sale value. There's a lot more market for used Nikon or Canon gear than for Sony. If you're ok with that, go for it.
Matt, thanks for posting all these video's and doing these reviews. You have helped me tremendously. I'm curious what type of mic you are using in these vids.
@FrodoDojo - Yes, the Fuji X100 is nice and certainly has it's place. The major limiting factor from what I've heard from people who have shot it is the auto focus which is not as good as one would hope from a camera in this price range. Don't expect auto focus to be anywhere near what you'd get from a Nikon or Canon DSLR.
Like u said, Canon for Video, Nikon for photography. So which one is better in overall? I'm having problem in choosing both of the DSLR to buy. Thanks.
The Nikon D5100 you might be able to get around the video problem buy using old Nikin lens that have the old aperture ring. But you still need manual control of ISO and white balance. Philip Bloom just using the presets for white balance when he's filming outside because he said you do not want to take away what the sun is giving you.
i'm a novice, quick question to anyone who knows, can you control or set the shutter speed in video mode on Nikon D5100. Like 24 fps or 30 fps and set the shutter speed as double the frame rate: 1/48 and 1/60?
@dbrowntown - That's a work-around to lock the exposure. It's not manual exposure. The Nikon D5100 doesn't do manual exposure for video. That's the problem. :-(
Thanks for the video, your channel is great. When I compare the D5100 with the 600D, however, I find that the latter is inferior in almost every way. I am into video AND photography, but I can't really take the 600D knowing the D5100 is better at almost everything, except having manual exp. controls for video. What should I do?
@twinkerzzz - No, I said for photography the D5100 is superior, BUT if anyone wants to do video and photography, or primarily video, the T3i 600D is VASTLY superior. The Nikon D5100 's lack of manual control for video makes it useless as a video DSLR.
This was a pretty big help. I have a Canon and a Nikon coolpix and am looking for a more professional photography camera, but I'm into film as well. My Nikon takes forever to snap a shot though which is why i got the Canon, if the subject moved the picture would blur. How long does it take to snap a photo between the T3i & D5100? Also, I saw a video with a few comparison shots & I found the Canon to have brighter coloring in daylight shots.
How long does it take to snap a photo between the T3i & D5100? Cause I have a Nikon Coolpix which takes too long to take photos so I got a Canon which is better. I also saw a video comparing different shots, and I found the T3i photos to have brighter colors. I'm looking for a primarily still camera but am into film. Would you still recommend a T3i?
After using the 600D for 3 years i would recommend it and put it up there as one of the top of the line "entry level DSLR's" For both photography and video. Not to mention you can get it super cheap these days! The picture quality on both cameras is not even noticeable, Not even the largest of pixel peppers can tell tare them apart. But if you really want to get the best picture quality out of your camera then you need to invest in some good glass.
nice review... but then, i would like to ask that 60d is still much better than 600d isn't it?? i heard that taking video from dslr camera will make the censor of the camera hot or spoil, is it true?? thanks...:)
@ArtoftheImage How about Sony Alpha580 ? I need to buy a new camera very soon too and i'm in confused about A580 D5100 and 600D and i known that A580 used the same CMOS as D7000 and D5100 Thanks for your time ^^
you didn't mention that the T3i has a flash commander for off camera flash and the d5100 doesn't....seems like a huge advantage to the canon for photography.
So I have recently purchased a t3i and I'm liking my canon. However I only do pictures for now but would maybe in the future do video. So I got the right camera? 👍 btw thanks for the video.
Jennifer Bingham I have the Canon T3I and It's awesome for video! But recently I've been struggling to find proper exposure when shooting in broad daylight. I'm definitely going to get a variable ND filter, so I can adjust how much light comes into my sensor... That's one of the seriously annoying this about the T3I. Overall, T3I is awesome!
I FINALLY saved up enough money for either one. This will be my FIRST DSLR camera..i've never used one so i don't know exactly how to work it, but i need an honest opinion form someone on which one i should get as a beginner?
This is completely off topic; but, I was wondering do you use a 4k display or do you go with a 1080 display? If you don't do you think it is neccesary to get one to monitor 4k footage?
DXO SNESOR RATINGS PUT: the D5100 way up top at a rating of 80 and just 12th position from the top spot whilst 42 cameras on down the DXO rankings the 600dD sits 53rd position . That means the D5100 is up there with the best for sensor image quality. Sensor wise DXO doesn't think Canon is comparable with Sony or Nikon. It thinks Canon is lagging behind the competition. I think you failed to get across this big gap between the two camera sensors in this review.
i really have to thank you because I'm a skateboarding filmer and i have a nikon and the video on the nikon isn't really that good as i hoped it would be. i decited to get the t3i because of the video quality and the fact i can also shoot photos. I'm sorry for the super long comment
Can we find samples (of the same photos) between these two cameras to compare? except for the classic studio test of dpreview. Thanx also... very useful video
raaaaah, it's so hard to switch sides. It's not like switching from ATI or Nvidia where the GPU is universal in any PC, for camera's, the lenses aren't! I don't really need the features of the D7000, and the D5100 would have been more than enough for me coming from a D40X. But yeah, the video problem kinda bothers me now and now I'm lost.
@Mozo901 - I don't agree, and I'm not hiding. I'm the one putting out videos constantly for people. I don't get paid to do these. Less than 5% of people actually vote or leave comments, and usually it's those that are negative. I know from how stupid or vulgar a lot of the comments I get are that these are also people doing the negative voting. If the voting was truly representative of all the people that view, then I wouldn't mind. It's not, so I decided to not bother with it.
@ArtoftheImage thx for video canon is good but when it come to pic i see bad image not happy with canon dslr i am not pro but in low light i see lots of gain in iso if i go more then 800 iso... its like all snow effect in pics... which i dont see in nikon... even in low light the gain is very less... this is why i am confused what to do... canon good for video nikon good for pic... i want quality video of canon and and pic quality of nikon...
I am interested in both videos and pictures. You said in this case get the 600D, but I don't think I will get deeply into videography.. I am quite confused. I will use this camera to record youtube videos like the ones I already do. Please help.
what will be ur judgement about Nikon D5200 and canon 600d? . Because i m looking forward among these and really confused. Because i m mostly into photography but feel that someday videos r smth i will go for......pls comment ...really need help....
THIX FOR INFO... i want best video and best pic... with best auto focus... which one should i get... after seeing ur video now i am confused coz one got good pic and auto focus and other one got good... video can guide me to any other model which has all in one... for me prise is not important i want best of both world help me
hey guys can anyone help me out. im planning on getting the d5100 its gonna be my first dslr. just askin but in video mode can the auto focus be turned off. cos looking at sample videos its noisy when the cameras focusing especially when your moving the camera.
I think people who always use the argument that a DSLR should be used for photography and videocameras should be used for video don't understand the market. Many people would rather have a single DSLR that takes both good stills AND video in one unit instead of buying two separate pieces of equipment. For one I could use the SAME lenses that I buy for a DSLR for pictures and video. Also everybody knows that videocameras take crappy pictures so DLSRs that take great video makes more sense.
@ArtoftheImage No sir, i think you did, US is not AMERICA, Canada is part of AMERICA too. I´m from Chile, i´m american. Don´t confuse geography with bad habits.
no doubt why nikon is behind the canon and the sony. canon eats them out. Im a nikon user, In still photography iits very good, but in video "canon" monsters nikon. wake up nikon!. If I'm about to get my next camera. It would be CANON! great for video and good for photography. overall its nice. I also found that canon controls is much better is some ways like ISO. In my D700 the ISO is hard to reach when using 70-200 2.8. In canon you can change iso using only right hand.
I hate this hole video thing, its a DSLR which are made PHOTOGRAPHY not for taking videos. You can not judge a DSLR camera on its video quality. If it takes better PHOTOS than it's a better camera, since the Nikon D5100 takes better photos, it's a no brainer that it's a better camera. I've been watching a lot of photography-centric TH-cam videos and yours by far are the most easily-digestible and informative. Great work. Just subscribed.
thanks! I would go for the t3i since i love both photography and video.

@xx1315 - The D7000 does full manual exposure for video and is a very nice DSLR for video.
Matt, thanks for posting all these video's and doing these reviews. You have helped me tremendously. I'm curious what type of mic you are using in these vids.
@amccune - That's manual focus you're talking about on your D3100 with the old non-ai lens, not manual exposure. BIG difference.
@FrodoDojo - Yes, the Fuji X100 is nice and certainly has it's place. The major limiting factor from what I've heard from people who have shot it is the auto focus which is not as good as one would hope from a camera in this price range. Like u said, Canon for Video, Nikon for photography. So which one is better in overall? I'm having problem in choosing both of the DSLR to buy. Thanks.

This was exactly what i was looking for.
Thanks for this.

But you still need manual control of ISO and white balance. Philip Bloom just using the presets for white balance when he's filming outside because he said you do not want to take away what the sun is giving you.
@stupid0rigami - No, the only the Nikon 50mm f1.4G is AF-S. The new recently announced Nikon 50mm f1.8G is AF-S but it isn't available yet.
@PFULMTL - The Nikon D7000 gives you lots of camera to grow into. It's an excellent DSLR.
@XaiQ - Obviously you can reduce noise better with a RAW file than a jpg, but the Nikon D7000 still beats the Canon 60D noticeably at high ISO.
Very nice video. I want to setup a vlog /youtube channel so which Dslr should I buy d5100 or 600d.
i'm a novice, quick question to anyone who knows, can you control or set the shutter speed in video mode on Nikon D5100. Like 24 fps or 30 fps and set the shutter speed as double the frame rate: 1/48 and 1/60?

@tomyloveu - As I said in the video, if video and photography are both equally important, go with the Canon T3i 600D (or the 60D or 7D).
@TriggErEyE - Yes, but you'll have to wait until the Nikon 50mm f1.8G is available.
@XaiQ - Yes, the Canon 60D is nosier at higher ISO than the Nikon D7000.

is there any difference between cannon 600D and cannon T3i 600D
ok cool thanks for the info
technically you are wrong. you can use manual control for video recording...however you need to make the adjustments before you turn on live view.
After using the 600D for 3 years i would recommend it and put it up there as one of the top of the line "entry level DSLR's" For both photography and video. @ItsNaqiuHere - Not in North America my friend. :-)
nice review... but then, i would like to ask that 60d is still much better than 600d isn't it?? i heard that taking video from dslr camera will make the censor of the camera hot or spoil, is it true?? thanks...:)
Its not too much of a swayer for me, but what type of artistic filters does the T3i have versus the D5100?
Could you please do a comparison between D3100 and D5100?
7000 & 5100 suppose to have the same sensor and ISO quality. Have you got a chance to test them out ? Thanks.
Is the manual video control something Nikon could add to the d5100 in the future via firmware update, in your opinion?
@ArtoftheImage How about Sony Alpha580 ?
I need to buy a new camera very soon too
and i'm in confused about A580 D5100 and 600D

@ArtoftheImage White background! Hurrah!
I just got the canon one and I am still learning how to take good pictures any advice. great videos man
So I have recently purchased a t3i and I'm liking my canon. However I only do pictures for now but would maybe in the future do video. So I got the right camera? 👍 btw thanks for the video.
The Canon T3i is a great little DSLR. Good choice!
Great! Thanks again.

The T3i is far superior for video during the day, but the d5100 is better at night due to its better ISO capabilities.
I FINALLY saved up enough money for either one.
This will be my FIRST DSLR camera..i've never used one so i don't know exactly how to work it, but i need an honest opinion form someone on which one i should get as a beginner?
@guyplay - I use the Zoom H2. Really awesome audio quality!
This is completely off topic; but, I was wondering do you use a 4k display or do you go with a 1080 display? If you don't do you think it is neccesary to get one to monitor 4k footage?
What kind of mic are you using? The audio sounds really good!
Looks like a zoom h2n. I have one and it looks just like that.
Which is better Nikon d5300 or canon 700d

New subbie, u were so good and down to earth in explaining. T3i for me
@ArtoftheImage thank you for you information. I'll wait for f1.8G to release.
@ArtoftheImage can one disable the auto focus function during video mode??? that irritating lens noise creeps in everytime... help pls!!!
i really have to thank you because I'm a skateboarding filmer and i have a nikon and the video on the nikon isn't really that good as i hoped it would be. i decited to get the t3i because of the video quality and the fact i can also shoot photos. I'm sorry for the super long comment
this is a realy good video, now i know what camera buy. this video was decisive.
thanks man was pulling my hair out - manual focus was the big deal
but in video d5100 has auto focus but i think t3i does not have it?
Maybe you should mention that the 600D does not autofocus when shooting video, while the D5100 does....
Can we find samples (of the same photos) between these two cameras to compare? except for the classic studio test of dpreview. Thanx also... very useful video

Did any 50mm f1.8 with autofocus that suit nikon D5100?
@johanneswingerlang - Had a lot of problems with internet trolls lately. Decided it was easier to just disable the ratings.

can you make a comparison between nikon d5100 and canon 1200d?
i am much confused between these
d5100 is better 100%!
@TriggErEyE - Nope... the Nikon D5100 will only auto focus with AF-S lenses.
thank you so much
@ArtoftheImage thank u... i go got it...
thanks. this vid was really helpfull. im gonna go with the canon
@ArtoftheImage how abt d7000?
@tomyloveu - The Nikon D7000 does very good video and is a superb photography camera.
hey guys can anyone help me out. im planning on getting the d5100 its gonna be my first dslr. just askin but in video mode can the auto focus be turned off. cos looking at sample videos its noisy when the cameras focusing especially when your moving the camera.
@ArtoftheImage Any cheap 50mm with f1.8 with auto focus suit D5100? thanks
@kibbles1 - Thanks!
I BUY A Fotocamera for PHOTOS not for VIDEO ! Recording to Snapsort.com the d5100 is much much better than 600d 96 pt vs 70pt i think.
Why disable rating? O.o
@CyberJuanito - Failed geography did we? :-)
@ArtoftheImage Horrible habit if you ask me lol, btw i really like your channel, very good work you´ve done so far :)

@do0wop - but what?
@arrow1archer - LOL... I'm not American. :-)
Thank you
Thank you!!! You saved my money :)
@unprofessionalvids - LOL... it's back! :-)
@humxa24 - The Nikon D5100 video auto focus is so bad it's not even worth mentioning. TOTALLY unusable. Same with the D7000 and the D3100.
If you are going for recreation, get the 600D. If you have a profession of photography, get the D5100.
@ArtoftheImage haha nikon should sounds like neekon :) sorta ?
You should just buy a CAMCORDER maybe you'll get better better footage.
good...
@ArtoftheImage No sir, i think you did, US is not AMERICA, Canada is part of AMERICA too. I´m from Chile, i´m american. Don´t confuse geography with bad habits.
Good
@izgil82 - Sounds like a good idea. :-)
@CyberJuanito - LOL... I guess you're right. We're all AMERICANS in the context you put it. Good point! :-)
@ArtoftheImage oh ok lol
no doubt why nikon is behind the canon and the sony.
canon eats them out.
Im a nikon user, In still photography iits very good, but in video "canon" monsters nikon. wake up nikon!. If I'm about to get my next camera. It would be CANON!
great for video and good for photography. overall its nice.

@stupid0rigami - no
But...
