    The more I dig into DigitalRev's older video the more I like them.
    It seems like back then it was about the comedy while teaching some concepts and showing good results(really like these portraits!) but these days it's more comedy-only stuff sadly.
    Hope they bring back the concepts like these older videos!

      Style, whether in fashion, art, or design, is often transient and subject to change with trends and time. In contrast, personalities are more intrinsic and unique to individuals, making them far more difficult to replicate or replace.

    You have to love this guy's sense of humor and it really does work. I produced an amazing swimwear shot at sunset using just my SB 700 speedlight triggered by my on-camera flash. All I used was the little bounce card that comes with the flash so that light wasn't so direct. It's amazing what you can do with minimal equipment if you know how to use your camera and flash setttings. Great video for students or anyone starting out!

    I use single flash portraits almost entirely. I love it. It gives me tons of power and tons of control, especially at night. I'm amazed at, with the right angles, how good of lighting you can get with just one flash and a little umbrella.
    With that being said, I have two flashes and do do multiple flash set ups too, but that's beside the point. When I'm doing individual portraits, it's a single flash. If it's during the day, I add a reflector that I balance with my foot (it's like an acrobat!)

Informative yet entertaining, but not ridiculously overdone like the vids of the past few months that lacked useful information and saturated with clothing most probably cant afford (which in addition to the over the top fooling around) contributed to the disconnect with your loyal viewers. utilizing the Nikon CLS (all modern Nikon DSLRs have this function) you can put the camera's on-flash unit into Commander mode and have it set to not contribute it's flash output to the lighting of the subject (in other words, pre-flash control flashes only). i use that mode frequently and it works wonders. when you own Nikon you get a free wireless flash control system - years ahead of everyone else. next time try using Commander mode that way. thanks for the great tutorial.

    So for the SB-900 the optical slave trigger isn't the red section. The red section is the light meter. Its actually the little circle on the right side. Helpful if your trying to trigger it and it doesn't seem to be working.

    the on camera flash won't be seen in the pictures, it fires a split second (speed of light) before the off camera flash so it won't be seen.

    • @anzaeria
      @anzaeria 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My experiments showed otherwise. I used my Panasonic G6's pop up flash to trigger my speedlight which was lighting my subject from the side. I placed a piece of card over the pop up flash but even so, the flash still penetrated through the card. My photos ended up having a small bar of orange light in them.

    • @joeverweire6095
      @joeverweire6095 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +anzaeria What shutter speed were you using?

    • @anzaeria
      @anzaeria 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera's shutter speed was 1/160, and the speedlight's flash duration was 1/32 power. Yea I wasn't happy about that little bar of orange light ending up in the photos. I'm going to have to remove it with Photoshop. I didn't think to turn down the internal flash power at the time but I doubt that would have made a huge difference anyway.

    • @joeverweire6095
      @joeverweire6095 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +anzaeria That's so odd. sounds like the sync speed is off just a hair. I hope you can get the issue resolved.

    • @anzaeria
      @anzaeria 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yea it really put me off using the pop up flash to trigger my speedlight. I had also bought a flash trigger along with the speedlight but couldn't get it to work with the camera - though it communicates fine with the speedlight. It might be that the extra pins on the flash trigger are preventing it from sliding all the way in the hotshoe. Looks like I might have to remove those pins and then I can hopefully say goodbye to using the dreaded pop up flash as a trigger.

    @J03x91 Settings don't matter. The settings I use in the beach will probably make your photos worse because of the different lighting conditions. Don't think about the settings too much as they're all different for whatever effect you want - for example do you want the subject to be sharp while the background is blurry? Just think about the effect you want and then change your settings to how you want it.

    This was actually a great video. I love all of the vids but most seem to be more geared towards being humorous than actually teaching you anything. You obviously know your stuff.

    Also you don't really need that cup modifier, there is a built in zoom feature on the speedlight that gives you control over the light directions.

    Depends on your camera. Eos 550D for example doesn't have this master function, but with the 600D or 650D it works. With higher classes it should work, too.

    is there any tutorial on taking good photos with the built-in flash? Cause I really can't afford a pro flash now.

  • @Patrick_559
    @Patrick_559 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can use the onboard flash as a master to trigger the off camera flash as a slave while its in slave mode. The light from the onboard tells the off camera when to fire basically.

    I really enjoyed this one. Most of everything you used in this video I have already. Except that I prefer to use my 5D for portraits and it doesn't have an pop up flash. So I would have to use my 40D or get wireless remote which I going to get as soon as I have the money. The info is pretty basic but sometimes you need to review fundamentals from time to time. Thanks again Kai.

    6:22, what flash do you need to deport flash like this ? is it wireless/infrared flash or ??...
    I have a Yongnuo 658 ex ii and i need a emitter/receptor module (Yongnuo 622) to make this kind of wireless and wondering why he hasn't this kind of module ??

    • @killjoyshidae1208
      @killjoyshidae1208 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's using the pop up flash as the commander and the flash is in remote mode.

    • @killjoyshidae1208
      @killjoyshidae1208 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oops, my bad. He's using optical slave mode, so all you need is a pop up. I'm pretty sure the YN-568II has a slave mode, but the triggers you mention just enable you to use radio frequency to have your flash adjust to your camera settings. Personally, I would get the triggers, since it's not dependent on line-of-sight. Also, I suggest getting the YN-622-TX. You have more features like remote manual mode, so you don't have to constantly go back and forth to change your flash settings, while having complete control.

    With the price of the SB-900, you can already make a 3-light set-up. You're in Hong Kong, the cheapest light modifiers are available there.

    I stop at 1:39 btw. When you do portrait photography out doors. What is the best setting to use? I tried one at the beach today and i use av mode and i felt that i could have done better. I am currently using the kit lenses on a canon eos t3 rebel wich i know it isn't all that great but i know i still can do better with it.

    Hi DRTV team, I could see a couple of nice improvements on this new video, but can you make a little bigger the box for the settings? Thanks, DRTV Rocks!

  • @TomShootsPhoto
    @TomShootsPhoto 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @7b0ne No, the d3100 doesn't have a remote flash option. You just have to use the flash as normal, set it to M and stop in down to the lowest settings. (On camera) .
    On the flash, you have to set it to SU-4 to be triggered with the other flash.

  • @Neopulse00
    @Neopulse00 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a 50mm 1.4/1.8G. But on a Nikon D3100 it becomes a 75mm instead because it has a "crop sensor" since it's a DX-line camera instead of an FX (full-frame) which the lens is "meant" for. Since it's an FX lens, it has a 50% more reach.

    The built-in flash can be set to -- in the commander mode setup screen. Then it will not sync with the main flash.
