Thank you for the review. I was also looking at this knife but I believe my requirements are similar to yours, what are you going to or have you already replaced this knife with something else that is better for precision/fine cutting?

Hi flip, yes I have sold my Brakimo and it has been replaced. One of the knives I purchased to replace it is the Condor Straight Back Knife (SBK). The SBK is 10.5” total length, has a 3mm thick spine with a far more narrow and slicey cutting geometry. It cuts more easily and efficiently and for its purpose feels plenty capable. For me this was a good choice, the SBK is a quality cutting tool. The other one is a custom fixed blade, being made by a gentleman in Alberta, Canada and his business is called NR Blades (you can see his work on Instagram and fb). This will be 10” total length, 4mm thick spine, full flat grind with a v-cutting edge. I expect it to be a better precision cutter than the Brakimo as well. I’ll need more time using the SBK though before I feel comfortable to review it :)

thanks for the review, great bushcraft knife not everyone likes scandi grinds however for bushcraft it works well. And i agree about the high rise mount. Just put a generic drop dangler on it.
    Stay safe ATB Del

I would take a belt sander or grinder and bring the top of the scandi edge higher and grind down the spine just a tad. Give it a 90deg edge too. Perfect Bushcraft and for finer tasks

You're right, some quality time working on the edge would yield a fantastic cutting tool. Plus it'd make the Brakimo truly your own!

Spot on assessment, I had to change that micro bevel and also I stropped the grind just a little bit using bubble wrap and sandpaper. This thinned that abrupt wall some amd made the knife much more slicy .
I personally would LOVE a four inch thinner version of this knife with slightly thicker scales.
I don't know why tops insist on thin scales it really bugs the crap out of me. Joe Flowers is an awesome designer but his scales on this thing left me wondering why?
Did Tops force this decision or was it his own . ...Cause it seems that they do this to alot of good blades.
Have you considered possibly the Dragonfly 4.5 ?
I think I'd rather have bought that knife instead. It's thinner and has the same edge style but much better handle ....Its like a kephart had a baby with a Brakimo .

You make some excellent points and I appreciate the knowledge and ideas you have. I’m happy to hear that the work you put into your Brakimo made improvements to the cutting edge.
The Dragonfly never really appealed to me, but my alternative choice to this would be the Baja 4.5 as I think it more closely embodies what I’d like the Brakimo to be.

Is the sheath ambidextrous? Can the clip be repositioned to the other side? Looks like there is a place to make a hole. Thanks

I believe this is a single position clip, I don't have the Brakimo anymore so I can't confirm this - sorry! However you pointed out something I didn't notice before (which is great), the divot on the other side does make it look like you can drill out that spot and reverse the clip. It also looks like it's recessed on that side to accept hardware that won't come into contact with the blade while it's in the sheath. I think that if you research the idea you've come up with you should be able to confirm your theory. Whatever you may find, please report back as lots of people could learn from this!

So which is it? I thought this was a great slicer with the scandi grind?

    • @hazard502

That’s what I thought too and was the main reason I bought it. But that’s just not the case, the grind right off the cutting edge is just too broad. This is more of an overbuilt survival blade, and not so good at fine cutting. So, capable but not the type of performance I’m looking for in a knife this size.

I don't seem to javelin this problem with mine BUT I did modify the edge slightly. The stock secondary micro bevel is to aggressive. ..
I do agree with his assessment that this knife is a survival knife with bushcrafting abilities.
If a person doesn't have skills with reprofiling or sharpening a knife like this I wouldn't suggest buying it esp if you're wanting a true bushcrafter.

You can easily fit a dangler on the existing clip.
