    For decades, I stitched with a hoop using the "stick and stab" method. A few months ago, I decided to take my work out of the hoop and stitch without it. I didn't realize this was actually something other people did, so I didn't tell anyone, feeling I'd be criticized if I did. Now I find that there's many of us that do it this way! I find I work a lot faster sewing in hand using the sewing method. It's, of course, personal preference. There's no right or wrong way, but this works best for me too!
    PS: thank you so much for showing us all of these great tips. You've saved me so much frustration and time, especially by showing us how to pull small threads through the backs of our pieces using another piece of thread instead of trying to get that small amount back into the needle.

    Thank you for another great video! I stitch in hand for small projects, as well as with hoops. Q-snaps, and scroll frames with split rails [so there is no basting needed to hold my project], (and especially use them for large projects). I have bases (2 sizes) that I use with my scroll frames and Q-snaps as well as a floor stand that folds and I can carry with me. I also have a small folding footstool that goes with me so I can be more comfortable. Thank you for emphasizing the need for a comfortable place to stitch. As a retired physical therapist I know the importance of a firm, comfortable seat with good support. As a hint when you don’t have a lumbar pillow take a bath towel and fold it to make the width you need and then roll it tightly. Place a few rubber bands or elastic headbands around the towel to hold it in place. You can take it apart to wash or adjust the size to fit your back better! Thanks again for a great video!

    Jean, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for your videos and all the experience and information you so willing share with us. I recently used your tip/technique to stitch a guide line
    around the perimeter of my finished needlework in preparation for pinning. This tip saved me the
    time and frustration of re-pinning several times to get the border evenly aligned. I will be using this
    technique for every project I frame. Thank you again.

    Hi Jean! I am also a recliner stitcher & I stitch about 8-10 hours a day…every day. I retired last summer & enjoying being able to stitch as I recover from a 2 part, 10 hour back surgery. (Still recovering 😕). I stitch with a 6” spring hoop from Hobby Lobby. I don’t have any issues getting out the hoop marks, but I take my stitching out of the hoop when I’m not stitching. I haven’t had any issue with floss bleeding and I spritz the back of my stitching when I’m done with best press, very lightly. I guess I’ve been very fortunate, I do this with DMC & overdyeds. I’ve never pre-washed my fabric or even thought about doing that, I may do that in the future. I started stitching in the early 80’s. Took a several year break to quilt & later was the sole caregiver for my mother. She passed away in 2017 & stitching has helped fill my void. Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful.

    Great video, Jean. Those trips sound awesome. I really enjoy the Denver and Grand Junction areas. And I have not been to a lot of those Parks. I'm definitely looking that up! My favorite place to stitch is in my vehicle. I rest one corner of my scroll frame on the car door and one in the edge of the steering wheel. I have infinite adjustment with my seatback and moving forward and backward. It's especially nice in the spring and fall when I can roll the windows down. In the house I will sit Indian fashion on the sofa. I will rest the scroll frame on my knees and work between the fabric and the scroll frame if the fabric is narrow enough. Otherwise I will prop the scroll frame on throw pillows on each side of me and use that as a stand.

    Another lovely podcast as usual Jean. I knit & crochet in a reclining chair, but can’t cross stitch in a recliner as I need to follow my chart closely & mark off what I have just stitched, or I get lost. I can’t find a place for all those things where they are comfortable & easily accessible to me while I have my feet up 🤨. I also stitch in hand. I have tried a hoop & just find that nothing is as comfortable to me as in hand stitching. So that’s what I do. Your trip sounds amazing, enjoy, cheers 😘🥰❤️💕😍😊

    Thank you so much, Jean! I've learned a lot from you even if I am not a beginner. I've done a lot of satin stitch projects and cross stitch on Aida (both in hand and with a hoop).
    I am new to stitching on linen though, and I feel a little intimidated by the prospect of holding a big piece of soft linen in hand and keeping my stitching even, not deforming the fabric That was my biggest question. I also sit in a recliner because of my back problems. My arthritis doesn't allow me to hold any tools in my hand for a long time either.
    So, I will keep practicing, hoping to master the new skill with the help of your videos.
    At an old age, stitching is such an enjoyable hobby, when other ones are no longer possible. Sigh...

    I am so glad I started watching your channel! You’re one of the few Stitchers to actually teach us something. While you are continuing and refining your episodes on the washing and bleeding of floss, what about hand-dyed fabric? That is what is so popular and so many of us use now. Do you pre-wash your hand-dyed fabric? And from what I hear, the fabric then shrinks and becomes a tighter weave.
    I believe one of your conclusions on the previous number 45 episode, was that you were going to stick to Weeks Dyeworks, (and DMC?) Because they had the least (or no) bleeding. So what happens when a pattern calls for Classic Colorworks or some other brand, do you do your own color conversion two weeks or DMC?
    What did you suggest to the person whose wet Band-Aid made her floss bleed? Did she wash the sampler at that point? Did the stain come out?
    Thank you for all of your time and information, it is very helpful.

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For "regular floss," I stitch exclusively with Cosmo floss, not DMC. So far, I have never had a Cosmo color bleed. I plan to design some things with Weeks Dye Works and will pre-wash the colors I choose until I have complete confidence in the brand. I cannot afford to stock all the brands so I decided to focus on Weeks based on my experiment.
      The wet bandaid stitcher decided to camouflage the spot with stitches rather than try to eliminate it.

    Anyway, I had a question unrelated to cross-stitching. Hope you can share. I noticed a doll or perhaps a stuffed animal on your left. With striped legs. Can you share what that is? And a pattern if you know. I'm a long-time quilter, have made many fabric crafts, and make doll clothes now. Thank you for such informative videos, I enjoy watching your videos and always learn something new.
    A question I have is, are cross stitch heirloom type pieces, for instance reproduction samplers appraised?
    This comes from a conversation with my daughter who does not do any kind of needlework. I mentioned to her I want to accomplish a sampler wall for my bedroom, and when that time comes to pass them onto her, that she doesn’t donate them to Goodwill, they are much too valuable. I am also a quilter knowing there are quilt appraisals, but I would like to know if needlework is appraised as well.
    Thank you again for wonderful videos!

    Thank you so much for reviewing these overdyed flosses. It seems that many designers are using them in their designs with little worry about color fastness. I have a question about overdyed fabric which many designers are using. While researching them I found dyers who said not to wash these fabrics or store them in plastic bags because the color will change. In the first case you would be washing out the dye and in the second case there would be a chemical reaction between the plastic and the dyes used. It looks like we should not only be concerned about the flosses we use, but also the overdyed fabrics that are in style right now. Do you ever use overdyed fabrics and what do you know about them? Any advice?

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I talk about this just a bit in episode #47 but let me add this: for my personal stitching time, I'm not going to stitch on a fabric that comes with instructions that say the color will change if I wash it. That's just silly (which is southern-speak for another word).
