    Great advice on magnifying glass. I have one and always keep it covered. After seeing on the news a couch that caught fire because of a snow globe near by, I never forgot it. It’s a serious thing and we should take care not to leave those things anywhere it can catch sunlight. Thanks for mentioning it! ❤

    I use a magnifier 100% of the time when I stitch. I never gave it a thought that it could be a fire threat. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. 😮

    Another great informative FlossTube, many thanks. Yes I’m one of those Stitchers that burnt a hole in my new stitching chair due to a magnifier being in direct sunlight, uncovered. I’ve learnt my lesson and it’s always covered now but it was a sobering moment to see that hole.

    Gee thanks I only said I bought Janet Irving a few years before my daughter was born! Wow I never looked at the copyright date., Glad it is still available! Whenever I was asked, I remembered you did it so referred them to do an internet search, now I have saved your Etsy link. The colors in this are still so perfect! I still love that olive/gold color either the berry color!

    Hi Jean, greetings again from Down Under. Thank you for another great video. I look forward to purchasing Lady Catherine sometime in the near future. Thank you, also, for mentioning the care to be taken with magnifiers and fires. I lost my house in a fire 5 yrs ago (caused by possums in the roof) and, as a result, lost most of the contents and the house had to be demolished. Among my things were a number of patchwork quilt tops waiting to be quilted as well as countless cross stitch and embroidery projects - needless to say, a lot of work and expense. I cannot emphasise enough to be careful with the projects we spend countless hours on as once they are damaged or gone there is no turning back. Have a great weekend Jean, and everyone who is watching. 💕🇦🇺

    Good to see you again. I look forward to seeing your videos and learning more from you. I have been a stitcher since the 1970's but learn new things all the time from designers like you. Thank you for taking the time to educate us. I bought my Brightech magnifier from Amazon which is not specifically made for stitchers but it has its own cover made from the same material as the light. No fires here. I live in Tulsa, home of The Silver Needle. Lucky me. She's been in business since the early 80's. Have a great week.

    Great information as always! As for magnifiers, I have two floor stands with magnifiers. I have heard of fire stories so I made quilted cases to cover each of my magnifiers, they easily slip on/off and I put them on whenever I will not be immediately returning to my chair to stitch. Not worth taking a chance! Very easy to make using just quilt fabric scraps. Purchased pot holders or placements sewn together would be an option for the non-quilter.

    Hi Jean! Thank you for all the great framing tips and warning to keep our needlework looking great for future generations. Please tell me why you use Cosmo threads to stitch your models? I know it is a Japanese thread, but it is not readily available in my area. DMC has always been my mainstay, but I am willing to try new to me things.😊 oh! Also, a glass of bottle of water/soda/juice can also act just like a magnifier in direct light!! My daughter caught the upholstery in her car on fire with a clear juice bottle!! Puff!! Up in flames!!! Guard that precious linen!!

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cosmo is just the best quality cotton floss on the market. I love the color range and the consistency in dye lots. It's pricier than DMC ($1.10 to $1.15 a skein) but it's just so much better.
      I know it must be frustrating that I talk about it when the vast majority of shops don't carry it. A Stitching Shop in Denver carries it and Sassy Jacks in Weaverville is beginning to get it in. Also, if you have a good quilt shop nearby, ask for it there. Quilt designers use it more than cross stitch designers! :)

    I am enjoying your videos and all the good info. I especially liked your sheep and what to stitch first. There are so many choices like that including the question asked about how to approach changing colors in a pattern of leaves. I’ve always done a lot of white last to keep it cleaner, but someone said it’s better to do the white first when nest to darker colors so you don’t bring the dark fuzzies up when stitching it later Does it matter? All the strategies come with experience, but it would be nicer just to learn them earlier. Thanks so much for your time in your videos.

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the question of stitching light or dark colors first doesn't matter a great deal when stitching with floss. In the world of needlepoint or any embroidery using wool or the more fuzzy threads, it does matter but not so much with cross stitch. Hope this helps!

    Thank you for all the information / tutorials! I do have a question. I'm recently back to stitching after a long absence. I'm loving all the great reproduction charts. How do you handle the situation where one part of the design is a tree with several different leaf colors...do you start and stop your thread for each individual leaf?....or do you "travel" your thread to the next leaf of the same color. My concern is the "traveled" threads showing through the fabric when framed. It would make stitching so much faster if there was a trick so you did not have to start and stop for each leaf color.
    Again thank you for a great channel. I'm so glad to have found it!!!

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The topic of traveling threads is a good one and I need to get it in the "line up" soon. There are effective ways to do it. The quick answer is to travel on the diagonal as much as possible.

      Until you find something that fits well, you can use anything that covers it ... from a stocking cap to a pillowcase.

      I recently purchased one with a light that hangs around my neck. I almost threw out the cover that came with it. Glad I didn't! Now I'll make sure that I use it.

    I think I missed your explanation to Michelle about the meaning of the 54/60 count? does that mean 54 threads in one direction and 60 in the other direction? Help

    Hello I have another question for you, is it okay to use a pencil eraser and go over the pencil line or would that be too rough? I made the same mistake and used a pencil to grid a piece of fabric and then stitched over it thinking it would wash out. Of course it didn’t but it was just a piece that only I will see so I didn’t need to restart it.

      I think that the eraser will just smudge the pencil line and may make it worse. I talk about gridding in today's video (#10) which may help you navigate this topic.

    Jean, I have a question. I bought 2 samplers many years ago in La Jolla, CA. They were stitched by the same girl, one at age 10 (stitched in 1821) and the other at age 13 (stitched in 1824). I am not skilled enough to chart them. Are their folks that do this type of thing?

    Another great video with wonderful information! I, too, think visiting the Hobby House would be fun, as the pictures they have posted on social media are gorgeous. Land that We Love is beautiful. The stitching tips are so helpful. Do you know of other Scottish Samplers? Also, could you speak to how to personalize a sampler? I have seen where stitchers will change the color of a letter in the alphabet to represent a family member. Are there other personalizations? I have never stitched a sampler, so I'm gathering as much info as I can before I make a final decision on which one I will choose to stitch. Finally, thank you for the tip on magnifiers. I will be removing mine from my lamp, as at this point, I don't use it.

      There are many Scottish samplers in existence and I am sure that some have been charted for modern day stitchers. I didn't mention it today but Jannet included initials of her family in her work. You can replace hers with initials of your family members.
