W is for wipers. I have my parents 58 Caddy they bought in 1960. Lifelong Southern California car, still on the road😊 Good luck guys, you have your work cut out for you.
My same exact thoughts, though I also thought maybe someone preferred the 57 front end (pretty much the same I suppose) enough to do a swap, or maybe the old 58 ones were rotting away so they put on what they could find
@@mediamain6 Other way to tell it's a '58 is the rear brake lights. They go up the length of the fin on a '57, and on a '58 they do as we see here. Briefly owned one, but I traded it for some parts for my main project car as that's been my dream car since I was a kid amd the Plymouth deserved to go to a better home.
@@mediamain6 No i do agree, just pointing out there's a lot of other clues when you know the differences, even without knowing VINs. You own one yourself, by chance?
Very cool car. Finding another Poly 318 could be a challenge, but the LA 318/360 bolts up to that transmission. Much easier engine to find in running condition. Looking forward to seeing this old beast up and running.
The LA 318 does NOT bolt to that transmission. The early poly A motors have an extended crank flange that bolts directly to the torgue converter with 8 nuts. They also have a 1 inch spacer plate between the motor and transmission. Better to find a running early poly if you want to keep the pushbutton transmission.
Judging by the eggs looks like there was a huge ant nest inside of that engine. The only way to save the block is by instaling a new sleeves. Remember, there's an added value on that engine due to the matching numbers. You can remove it and put other engine and tranny to run the car and working the original engine without hurry
The pushbutton transmission allowed direct reverse to drive without pushing neutral. This permitted rocking the car to get out of a mud hole. If you do the 360 with 727, make sure that you find a version of transmission that was originally working with a pushbutton transmission. In face it may be best to select an engine and pushbutton transmission already mated together so that you will likely have all the cable arrangements for the transmission and the kick-down linkage to a carburetor. I think 1964 down to 1960 models may be your best source for needed parts.
Single 7" headlamp is a '57. Dual 5" headlamps are '58. But that tail end is clearly a '58. So, this cars' probably had a front-end put on it sometime in it's life.
also, this same car/color, 4 door etc, can be seen in the movie, Animal House, with John Belushi , set in 1962, the car is abandoned in front of the Delta's Animal House, as a worn out wreck , even the rear bumper is hanging down like in Christine when Arnie first sees the car
@@TeenMechanic you can see it at 4:12 in this YT clip "10 Killer Facts About The '64 Lincoln Continental "Deathmobile" - Animal House" I also left a similar comment on there🤣 it's only seen in the movie for those few seconds, so just a background prop ,
I'd buy the rocker arm tensioner springs off you (the springs between the rockers on the shaft). I need some to replace the ones on my 277 poly in my '56 Savoy.
Definitely is a 58 Plymouth. Yes the fenders and headlights and fender spears are 57 but everything else is 58. The dash facia's all have little embossed stars where as the 57 had dots. The side hockey sticks are 58. The tail lights are 58... The bottom piece of the rear bumper where the tow hitch is poking through is 58.(meant to be for a reverse light). Even the hood is 58 because of the badge. So many little things says it's a 58. That trunk handle is quite rare...
My 62 plymouth has that very same engine. And I thought mine was bad, looks like you won first prize. You should have no problem findind a 318 Poly, or at least the block, everything else looks good. Found one with the help of my Mopar car club. A man in michigan had one for 500-dallors,plus it was rebuilt, he just found a 413 supper stock for his plymouth and wanted it out of the way. But anyway in my area there's quite a few of those engines in junk yards all is not lost. Don't let people tell you 318 are bad engines, they run forever if you have a good one or if done right.
Find a good running 318 poly motor. Much easier the 318 poly is a great motor has like Hemi Rocker large valve . They also have a mean exhaust note 👌🇦🇺✌️.
Cool car and you both can make it run again. When exactly depends on how far your willing to dive? One thing I see is it still has mostly the original interior and the deluxe steering wheel. Also the eye brows on the fender and upper lips have not rotted out those are very typical for 57-59 Plymouths to start rusting from. Engine is probably fubar at this point it seems humidity and mice have done there job. Best way is to consider swapping in something else that runs and has parts. Since I have a weak spot for these I will say what ever you decide to do it should be done with the future in mind.
I rebodied a 57 Belair into a 57 Plymouth. I did that because the 57 Belair floorpans are dead on almost in the width of the floor from rocker to rocker an there much easier to get an a much higher outcome an you won't have 50 million patches
@stacysanders-w3e thanks alot, just gives me more people to prove wrong. i have all the resources I need. i know someone with 3 of these as parts cars. i have welders and access too them. why are yall so negative?
Beating on an engine with hammers!?! Actually...that's a really good idea! Melt the engine down...and make some more hammers out of it! I like this car, and I hope you folks want to toss in a suitable engine and get 'er back on the road. Aloha!
Heads will clean up. Port and polish. Clean valve stems before tapping out. And valve regrind. Pull engine a tare down from below. Hone out cylinders. Knock out pistons from below. Remember. Its all content. But c crank could be good. Good luck. Tare it down is my vote.
@TeenMechanic you young Mate. You have to be professional. And not beat it with a big hammer to remove. Preserve is the word. Maybe you find a 318 block. A set of rings and you rolling again. Borrow the tools if needed. Safety first. These big cars will bite you. Good luck. 👍👍✌️
That car may have been in a flood at some point. With the plugs out, that would explain how so much dirt is in it. The rest of the car is way above average. Just find a good engine for it.
Get a 350 chevy engine..they keep the world going around!!! All this motor would be good for is to throw in a car that you're hauling to the scrap yard for weight😂😂
Idk where y'all are from but could pick up a cheap 5.7 hemi car or truck whatever for pretty cheap just some rot box rip it all out throw er in there they love giving er all the way
I think you can possibly salvage heads fuel pump cam intake manifold oil pan and crank saft if they look good I don´t know if its just me or is it because I live in Finland and not America I have very limited parts I am Repairing 56 Packard now And I have saved everything because I always can´t bay to parts from USA because the shipping it can charge you like from 30 to 200$
That’s super cool! 56. Packard is pretty neat. I feel like we’re going to end up buying a complete engine. Something that already will run as soon as it is dropped in.
@davidhusband5022 nope, just me, sure you may think your better because your an adult as all adults think they are better than children, but tell me this, what were you doing at my age? i highly doubt you were restoring cars.
I can tell you rite not. If it has Mopar in the name. Its three times the price on parts. Find a deisel set up for it. Better gas millage. Front grill . Be prepared to pay. Make your own. Expanded mess. Head lights easy. You have to rebuild all the brake system also. Inc all pipes and hoses. And shoes. And kits. You need tyres. Fuel tank. Soak seats slowley and hose down. Dry inside slowley. Good luck cool car...
its a 1958, the only parts on this car that are from a 57 is the front end. everything else points to it being a 1958. do the research I promise you wont be disappointed

Just going to say the same thing.. Depends on how the transmission condition is. Great start for a cool project.
