Dark Souls Lore: Gwyn The Lord of Sunlight

- This Dark Souls Lore video primarily covers the timeline of Lordran with a focus on Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight. Some of the lore chosen is speculation, some is not. The Legends of Lordran Dark Souls Lore videos series also tend to attempt to enter the psyche of the character the video is focusing on; imagining the Lore of Lordran from their perspective. So if some of the lore seems inaccurate it may be due to the fact that it IS false because the subject of the video (Gwyn in this case) is misinformed or does not know the whole truth.

Also, Subscribe, I make videos all of the time and I'm going to go buckeded wild when Dark Souls 2 is released.
This video might be the last Dark Souls lore video, but I have a feeling it's actually the genesis to some Dark Souls 2 lore.
Thanks.

That slowed down music is... heavenly... 10/10 would praise it all day
I see many people referring to Gwyn as a Tyrant but I don't think that as entirely true. Gwyn has done and ordered cruel things but he did not do them out of cruelty. I believe that Gwyn tried doing what he thought was best for humanity by attempting to save humanity from itself. Keeping humans in the light and stoking the fire to keep the shadows at bay. I'd go as far to say that Gywn is the most human character in the game despite being considered a god. The Abyssal Sorceries and the Abyss itself are things harmful to all life and reflect the evil that all humanity is capable of. The Abyss corroded Artorias and mutated the Oolicians to frightfully cruel creatures.New Londo had to have been his cruelest order but as you explored it's depths did you not see what horrors still survived the flood? The ghosts, the mass of souls, the dark wraiths and of course.. the Four Kings who still hunger for humanity.
Left unchecked it surely would have been Oolacile all over again.. Gywn's actions were extreme, there's no questioning that. It's no wonder some humans planned a revolt against the gods but I believe that he had humanities best interest at heart. In the end he burned himself into a husk if only to give us one last light to look to, even if it was a dying flame. If Gwyn is guilty of anything it is that he did not go gentle into that 'good' night. To me and a few others Gwyn is the most human character in Dark Souls.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night-Dylan Thomas
I like a lot of what you have to say and it's one of the most interesting comments I've ever received.
That being said, the mutated humans of Oolacile are not a result of the Abyss or Darkness, under the metal skeletal mask of a Darkwraith is just a man's face. The mutations of the Oolacile people is a result of Manus' influence over humanity which every human is thought to possess and humanity is also believed to be fragments of the Dark Souls -- The Pygmy's Lord Soul. The Pygmy is also believed to be Manus, hence his great influence and ability to contort and mutate those who possess it.
This is mostly just my speculation, but there is some proof. New Londo acts like a control group in the experiment of what effects the abyss has on humans. The people of New Londo were not mutating and neither were the Darkwraiths who actually had direct contact with the Darkness. The only true difference between the Abyss in New Londo and the Abyss in Oolacile is Manus and his influence over humanity.
I'll give you the soulmass creatures... I have no idea what the hell they are but I've always thought of them as like the congealed hatred manifestation of the dead bodies of humans who died during the flood. As for the Four Kings, I have a huge theory on them and how they're actually the greatest saviors of the lore (which I'll never share officially), but if I stay grounded to only slightly wild speculation, I just think they were mutated because they were in possession of a fragment of the Light Lord Soul (Gwyn's Lord Soul) and it didn't mix so well when they joined the dark.
Anyway, love your insights and by no means is my video or theories on Dark Souls the end-all-be-all, that's the beauty of Dark Souls lore.
Brent Ramsten Interesting stuff, I've heard a lot about the theories and workings of sorceries and whatnot, they're definitely fun to theorize about.
But no, what I'm talking about is actually called Mass of Souls -- the blackend, tar-like lump of human bodies that don't respawn after being killed. They're in New Londo after you drain the city. darksouls.wikidot.com/mass-of-souls
My bad, that's what I meant by "soulmass."
A tyrant is a tyrant. It doesn't matter how benign their motivations. "Convictions are sometimes worse enemies of truth than lies" -Nietzsche
Brent Ramsten We might find out more about them in Dark Souls 2, there seems to be a creature that's comprised only of human bodies in the latest trailer:
It's at about 1:50 Dark Souls II - PS3/X360/PC - Cursed (Trailer)
Eerily similar to an illustration I made years ago I might add. =)
stevenbednarz.daportfolio.com/gallery/762626#12
tiakpark He also said "No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."
Knowing what happened in Oolacile, would you rather be a mutated cruel monster? Robbed from what it is to be human and be a slave to the dark?
Sides that quote has little to do with tyranny or how power corrupts but more a commentary on how convictions or fanatical beliefs cloud people from seeing/accepting what is true. I really don't see how Gwyn was fanatical.. Every thing he did had a reason. Tyranny itself is defined by ruling with cruelty and unfairness but I don't see the unfairness in his choices. Only the burden of sacrifice, so much so that he burned his own soul for a seeming eternity to keep the fires of his light going. This is not the act of a man trying to keep himself in power but the acts of a man keeping the dark at bay. The pygmy may have fathered humanity but the way I see it Gwyn was a father to humanity... doing what ever it took to keep it safe in the light.
I'm sad this is your last video from Legends of Lordran (even though I knew), this video, among others, shows just how good of a storyteller you are and how much you care about the way you portray it (in your editing and shot choices).
Regardless of when I've agreed/disagreed with your theories, I've thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of Legends of Lordran, and think this is a fitting swan song. (To Legends of Lodran). I think I speak for many others when I say I can't wait to see what you'll have in store once Dark Souls II comes out, and I'll be just as eager as everyone else to find out.
An internet standing ovation to you, good sir!
Thanks man. =)
TerraMantis
Just make sure to write Legends of Drangleic, next.
JSPumpkinKing Yes please im only (from my guess) 29% threw darksouls so far and there are so many things i've seen that connect to the prequel.
miguels stone
Yeah and honestly I like TerraMantis Style of Presenting the Story than VaatiVidya's. Don't get me wrong I like both, but Vaati's style is a Straightforward and also he's like talking directly to us. Terra's on the other hand tells the Story using 'Books' and some other ways like in his Video of Gwyndolin and Havel's Lore. Both are Great in their own ways and Once the Date is 25th April, I really am looking forward to learn lore from both Vaati and Terra.
Final note: Keep up the Great Work Vaati, Terra! We would never want to see you guys go Hollow.

"You humans always taking what you please always resorting to force" so did Zeus & friends. Correct me if I'm wrong please but weren't the dragons just minding there own business.
+Storm Breaker what are you talking about? Look!
*finds conveniently placed knife*
They were armed!
+Storm Breaker Pretty sure the dragons just sat in their trees wondering where the fuck everyone else was. Since it was pitch black 24/7.
There was no such thing as Light or Dark, Death or Life. Only fog, stone, and dragons.
+Bubblewraposaurus Rex No light or dark means no contrast which means a) dragons can see in a way other than we do (maybe motion or maybe seismic) or b) dragons sat around blind for millenia and occasionally fell out of the arch trees.
THANK YOU!! I always hated Gwyn for that. The dragons never did anything. It was genocide.
Of all the Dark Souls lore videos I've seen, these are the best and most well thought out. It never occurred to me to think of Gwyn as a hollow but it makes perfect sense. He sacrificed his own humanity, blinded by his own desperate struggle for power. For as much as he resents humanity, he himself is quintessentially human.
You have my respect, sir.
Gwyn and the rest of the lords aren't human. Gwin didn't have humanity to offer to the flame so he used his own soul to kindle it a bit further.
You could think of it as a form of humanity since he went hollow. Though that could be an effect to whoever comes in contact with the flame?
But maybe I'm wrong.. since there's the chaos witches who do represent life :/
You blend your speculation seamlessly with what is known to create an incredibly believable version of this story. Deep and full. You clearly love Dark Souls. Well done
dat pic
***** ive no clue how it does that
Incredible narrative. You covered the scope of the story very well, and stated convincing evidence of Gwyn's distain for humans.
I like how you pointed out the counterbalance of each soul found in the First Flame--death vs life, and light vs dark--and their corresponding founders. I never considered the Witch of Izalith as the Lord of Life until now; she founded pyromancy and bore children, whereas Nito simply spreads death. You nailed the important contrasts of Gwyn's Lord Soul to the Dark Soul. The Dark Soul threatens the Age of Fire, but ironically can be used to prolong it.
I also found it interesting that "where humans thrive in great concentration," the light in the Age of Fire fades, inching closer towards the Age of Dark. Yet despite this fact, Gwyn overlooked the noble traits in humans.
Dude you're awsome. I think hawkeye Gough said it best. " one's demise is always one own doing" . i still love this game and the lore attached. Great job
I would say Gwyn's comrades hating humans is speculation since the clips you used to narrate the disdain those close to Gwyn had towards humans is usually, well, after you attack them lol
Usually I like to turn down the game volume and soul grind while listening to lore narratives and theories in the background but you did such an awesome job on these, I just have to watch. Much respect to the all the work you put into all these videos
Your best lore video yet. Well done.
Incredible video. This is the best telling of the Age of Ancients and the Age of Fire out there. Thanks a lot for the effort Terra.
I always fucking love these. Something about the writing, your voice, and the subtle music in the background just gives me chills. Keep it up.
Oh, man, that last shot of Drangleic being the beginning of a new age. As if I wasn't hyped enough.
Wheres your anime avatar from? She is just like :3
Man, you have a gift with storytelling. You deserve more subscribers.
Brilliant video as always TerraMantis, your storytelling never ceases to amaze!
Gwyn is such an awesome character. On the one hand, he's a callous tyrant, so afraid of the dark and his own downfall, he'd be willing to burn himself alive in a desperate act of pride. On the other, he's a 'magnificent father', who would sacrifice himself out of hope for the salvation of the world he cherished, and the people he loved. I'm gonna miss him in Dark Souls 2. :'(
Dark souls 2 is a prequel. So there is a huge chance that he will be there.
This is all speculation, if he's a tyrant or a great father we dont know
Ben Koby I don't think its a prequel.
Ben Koby It's not a prequel.Watch the videos of VaatyVidya and you will understand why.
1128nesecret
I hope there will be another badass boss like artorias (not exactly like him thought lol) surely my favourite boss with manus and man lore wise he's just awesome
Your best video Terramantis...and kudos for using a more narrative voice and not the overly dramatic voiceover you used on the Manus video.
I try to have my voice suit the atmosphere of the video, if it's more informative like this then I speak more punctually. In the case of Manus... I would go stick my head in an oven for about 15 minutes between takes... you know, method acting.
This is the best lore video I have seen, and I'm subscribed to many dark souls lore tellers. You have done such an excellent job with this series. You no longer have to suck it TerraMantis, you have earned a break :D
Thanks
\O/
Dat Ending...so emotional! Well Done!
i really love how you did this. your version of the story makes it sound even sadder.
"prepare for unforeseen consequences.." g-man told Gwyn to link the first flame so he could bring about the age of dark.. HL3 confirmed
Your best one yet. I love the Dark Souls 2 clip at the end, especially with the genesis line
Very well done
The Lords + The Scaleless = ultimate gankers
That ending was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard
"and from the Dark they came and found the souls of lords within the flame"
Why is it that Gwyn feared the Dark so? After all, he too originated there. But, is it even possible that he remembers his origin? Before the flame?
Love the picture from Berserk that you used when talking about the chaos demons. The way DS alludes to Berserk so much makes me like it even more. Especially like that Artorias is based off of Guts.
Well done, as always. I look forward to your incite on dark souls II.
Man, your lore Videos are perfect to sleep to! And this is of course meant as a compliment! Just like Tales i used to listen to when i was younger :D
the narration gave me chills ver good TerraMantis I hope more lore videos will come with dark souls 2 keep it up
Your videos always strike me where it counts man great work
Thank you for this videos. This is just nice, seeing this Info after debating 2 hours with someone, about what really happened in Lordran. But I think the best part was the cut to Drangleic. Very nice indeed.
I think that last party was truly beautiful and it describes humanity the real humanity very well, are you sure you're not a philosopher if not you should take up a job as one.
Well-made! Great pace and music & stuff. It makes a little more sense now :D
OMG that Drangleic tease at the end ;_; Incredible video! Subbed : )
Holy crap this video is nicely put together, nice stuff!
I don't know if anyone picked up on it, but there was a mistake regarding the Witch of Izalith's attempt to duplicate the First Flame. This video says she used her Lord Soul and Pyromancy to do so, but Pyromancy didn't exist until after the attempt failed consuming the Witch of Izalith and creating a chaotic flame and the Bed of Chaos from which all demons come from and creating pyromancy. Before all this, the Witch of Izalith and the Daughters of Chaos wielded Fire Sorceries that were lost when they were consumed by the Flame of Chaos.
You can verify this through the dialogue of Quelana.
One item says that "Quelana of Izalith" is the "mother of pyromancy", and if you're the mother of something then you gave birth to it. Another item contradicts this by saying the Witch of Izalith (The Lord) was the mother of pyromancy when she was engulfed in her attempt to recreate the First Flame. I didn't get it wrong, I just chose which one I thought was canon because the game made the choice available. Item descriptions themselves are not always fact, they are legends of Lordran in and of themselves and legends aren't always accurate.
Ascended Pyromancy Flame:
Pyromancy flame drawing upon the latent power
of Quelana of Izalith, mother of pyromancy.
For the pyromancer, a flame is a precious
thing indeed, to be nurtured, often for an
entire lifetime. When the flame is shared, it
creates an eternal bond between the parties.
Demon's Catalyst:
Demon catalyst formed from Izalith molten
rock. Can be used as fire weapon.
The Demon Firesage was the first demon,
and the last master of the original fire
arts before the Witch of Izalith was
engulfed by Chaos, creating pyromancy
Check out my Witch of Izalith video.
TerraMantis The word "mistake" was a poor choice of words. I should have said "inaccuracy based on my understanding". But it is true. The Witch of Izalith didn't use pyromancy to create a new First Flame. Pyromancy was created when the witch failed to control what she created thus creating chaos which engulfed her and gave rise to pyromancy. In other words, it was Chaos, not the Witch of Izalith, that created pyromancy. Being that she did create Chaos, she is more like a grandmother of Pyromancy dispute what the item descriptions say
This is what happens when the lore is left purposely vague so that people can draw there own conclusions.
It did exist but as sorcery. Then it became regular pyromancy as we see in game
I really enjoyed this lore series, the legend of the abyss walker was hands down the best. I'm looking forward to your content for dark souls 2
Another epic piece TerraMantis. Cant wait for your videos on dark souls 2! :D
the ending was awesome
great work, as always
what a beautiful video TerraMantis... I am in awe :) you tell things so poetic that it gives me goosebumps
Very well done. Especcialy the ending was great. Your second best lore video in my opinion, I liked Artorias' video the most.
I'm in awe of this one. Best video yet and the end with Drangleic....wow. I love VaatiVidya's video. But, you have far surpassed even his level of quality in my opinion. It's going to be hard for anyone to top this one.
Damm these videos give me chills. Great job man.
Man... this is one of the best videos I've ever seen, u're a genius ;3;
Brilliant editing, great work mate.
Amazing stuff as usual. Can't wait for you to produce Dark Souls 2 content
This video actually brought tears to my eyes. Bravo.
Breath taking, absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for this video!
That voice almost as good as David Attenborough
Oh wow, I must've just got here as it finished uploading.
Been looking forward to this though for a while now though.
I keep coming back and watching this every couple of days leading up to Dark Souls 2. My level of hype has reached epic proportions. My copy is fully paid for and all of my midterms for this semester are out of the way now. Nothing left but excitement to occupy my mind for the next week. Gamestop isn't having a midnight release here. I'm considering attempting to bribe an employee.
So thankful for this upload, much props
Damn near made me tear up at the end there
I love that there's a dark souls 2 commercial before this. So PUMPED!!!
He didn't make many mistakes, he was simply crushed by the inevitable.
What a good video, this is like the hole lore in a nutshell, this prepare me to embrace dark souls 2!
This lore explanation ws beautiful... So glad I found your channel and subscribed.
one of the best lore vids of dark souls i have ever seen !
Great job dude!! Keep doing this series!
Knocked it out of the fuckin park my man, well done!
Your videos are truly amazing and thought provoking. Subbed.
Hey TerraMantis,
I only discovered you today and binged some of your content. It looks like you haven't uploaded anything for a while so I just wanted to remind you that you're a great story-teller. If you're not doing anything with that in your life right now, maybe reconsider. I'm glad I found you and hope you're well.
Your videos are almost to good man.
Me too. I am hoping that they elaborate on the dragon covenant, and allow one to become closer to a dragon like a form of drake. All the things to hope for, and all to be seen...
man this adds so much more drama and anticipation for dks2! i cant wait for new lore.
i just came back to see some of the comment chains ive been a part of and wow, isnt it wonderful that there is a talk going on about whether a boss we meet in game one time and who is not talked about in any dialogue (and when he is its about his actions not the man himself) is being actively argued about whether or not he was a tyrant?
thats amazing to me.
I don't think gwyn regrets what he did tbh.
The ending was amazing, so awesome, and awe inspiring.
That...that was just beautiful. I'm simply at a loss for any other words.
This video alone shows how much amazing story there is to the Souls series if you just dig deep enough
those r sum good narration skills u got there
There is only one thing that could surpass your ability; if Morgan Freeman was the narrator. Your music is great, your attitude in the videos is great and your logic is sound. Thank you for making such a great video series.
im surprised you didnt give seath a mention, he played a large part in his brethrens downfall after all. anyway great video, wish you´d do even more of these, I like DS1 best.
Gotta say among all the dark souls lore videos out there, terramantis makes the best. Hands down.
Thanks for the subtitles..very helpful
TerraMantis...you are a genius!!
7:36 - 9:01 Song name?
I think it's acoustic labs- depth. Yeah I'm 5 years late
I love his stories, but I something inside me always nitpicks. "The world was unformed, until it wasn't". I know that no one knows what happened, but it still sounds a little ridiculous. And do you think the Lords were as they are before they found the Lord Souls, or did the Souls give them power and being? And where the Hell did Gwyn's knights come from?
gwyn was just a random dude who happened to find the flame and the 4 knights were 4 elite who received a soul of a lord from gwyn
very well done! best lore video i've ever seen!
masterpice after masterpice! dude this is awesome
"in the dark the world was unformed... until it wasn't." lol great explanation
What I'd like is a Souls game not focused on the end of an age, but its beginning. Not a tale of a nation about to die, but of one that is yet to be forged by flame. That would be nice
My deepest respect for Gwyn, I gladly sacrificed my char to continue the Age of Fire in his name.
drangleic was a good touch at the end 10/10 would reccomend
2:20 this has to be the best videogame-soundtrack i heard in a very long time!
not many can even try to compete, the only ones i can think of are 'icarus' from DX;HR, and the soundtrack of the game Bastion.
simply amazing
The music is from the amazing acoustic labs channel, not from dark souls. However Gwyns boss theme and the "nameless song" from the game are really good.
ya, figured that out as well, after going through the credits later on ;D
but thanks anyway, mate :)
and i agree, gwyns theme, the "nameless song" and the music playing whilst entering the kiln ("faithful black knigths" i believe) are extremely good, as well as the "hidden track" which partially played in some of the trailers
tisgoodjuju
oh and how could i forget the most epic one?! "the ancient dragon", the one playing at the ash lake. silly me ^^
You're very good at setting the mood
Magnificent ending, sir ! Just... Purely... Magnificent !
BEST LORE VIDEO PERIOD. FLAWLESS VICTORY
The ending is such a good tie in.
this produced a teardrop on me.
damnit.
Once again, great job.
Bravo Bra-freakn'vo...that was awesome
exactly my thoughts...amazing clip my friend.Amazing..
Got to admit, that was some powerful stuff.
I used this video as a guide to create a short story based on this video's lore of lordran in high school and i got an 'A' thanks terramantis
If it is really a loop then too would the coming age of darkness end and another age of fire begin.
+Nyghtking this is really interesting because considering what we now know of dark souls III, players don't use humanity, they restore their embers. Maybe the game's story happens in the new age of fire?
reset
Maybe, they never explain what would happen after 1000 years of darkness, if it is just a loop where dark follows light and is in turn followed by light.
Really good video, I'll subscribe!
thank you sir, u just brightened my morning
this is so relaxing ,i am drawing siegmeyer and listening to this it's awesome
MY GOD DUDE YOURE SO DEEP!!! +TerraMantis
So mooch wow, grate feelz
+Scott Isom ayy lmao?
Your butt has indeed fallen off from laughter.
I feel like a lot of trouble could have been avoided if someone had given Gwyn a nightlight.
