He does NOT get jealous, but he knows he must set her straight on "Dear Mr. Wickham." She has misjudged both men because of her Pride. She thinks Darcy is the lesser man, but it is absolutely the opposite way around. Note how, later in the movie, she finds out from her sister that Darcy secretly helped them. She feels horrible because she has misjudged Darcy.
@@raindrops21_9 that's so interesting, I didn't know that. It works so well, not only is it fittingly earnest of him, but you can see her raw surprise & head spinning from anger to being in the moment with him. It also really elevates the dialogue, which is all about finally getting past their assumptions, laying the truth bare, and being honest about their emotions. The classic English lit plots that turn on the emotional suppression of their characters, Austen's included, seem otherworldly enough to be unrelatable. This performance brings the characters right into your heart because you can totally relate to the dynamic of being angry with someone you love, and with being confused by attraction and conflict. Matthew's move at the end also served to return the focus on Darcy's expression of love, despite his disappointment and passive aggressive final line.
3:30 untill 3:40 when u can see that they both really want to kiss, but pride prevents them, is so romantic....sigh!! strangly more romantic then if they had!!!
The way I love you comes out.. as if it he had been suppressing it, and now finally he was saying it with both fear and relief.. and I’m in love with it. I wish for that someday, to hear someone say they love me so assuredly
Though I didn’t like many of the liberties the movie took that is far from the original source material, this scene is one of the few that I did like and love. The gorgeous backdrop/scenery, the perfect timing of the thunder when Darcy insulted her father (Lizzie being very close to her father), the acting, the chemistry, confusion…. Just everything. Even the way he said “Wickham” had so much gravitas and context. Darcy here was thrown in such a loop that he was both angry, unsettled, and infatuated all at the same time. And as a viewer, I was going through the same confusion wondering why is he still compelled to seemingly want to kiss her after all that toxicity? Brilliant scene caught on camera. I know many say that this version of Darcy was not fully true to how it was written. But I’d like to think that had Jane Austin seen Matthew Macfadyen play the role, she would have rewritten the novel to be like this version’s Darcy.
i love it how back in that time, a man wouldn't even touch a woman without her permission. He didn't even look wrongly at her. Didn't kiss her, didn't touch her, even though no one else was even close to them. I wish there were more guys like that in this century...
Although it's nice to romanticize such a "better time" men throughout history have committed assault against women no matter the age, country, or religion. Darcy us fictional and written by a woman, that's why we love him so much.
Truly one of the greatest love scenes in cinematic history. See how she recoils at the very end, when he has walked away. She suddenly realizes she has just made the greatest mistake of her life.
It’s a great scene but it takes her a good long while to warm up to him. So far in the story he has been the most tremendous arse to her, her sister and as far as she knows at this point her friend Wickham. She recoils at the end because she was very shocked by his proposal, he was equally shocked by her rejection.
she didn't recoil because shes made the biggest mistake of her life by rejecting him lmao. Till this point Darcy appeared extremely unlikable to both Lizzy and the reader. She recoiled perhaps, because of the way she lost her composure. During this time her outburst would have been considered hysterical, you were supposed to be awfully composed at all times. That, or she was just shocked by the unexpected nature of his proposal. Till this point it had seemed that Darcy despised everyone around him including her
Are you serious? He was rude and arrogant and despite her attraction to him, she is genuinely repulsed by his words. He's the one that made a mistake here.
Although the 1995 version is beautifully acted and true to the book this 2005 version is magnificent drama! It somehow captures and pulls you in more than previous versions. In either case, we thank you Jane Austen!!
This is true...I don't know if can be said but this may be the only story could be the debated with it's authenticity with the cinematography versions and which one is better. Fans will always debate.
even after she said those harsh statements, you could see that they were aching to kiss each other, what she said mattered but in that one moment they were just enveloped in passion ,it wasn’t heat ,just the passion of love.
I think this scene is an attempt to present another wet Mr Darcy after the massive success the wet Colin Firth (Mr Darcy in the 1995 adaptation) has received. I dare say they nailed it!!!
Girl...I'm like you. This is my happy and sad movie. I bombed on a test for school and cried my eyes out. This was the only thing that could give me good vibes

That's one of the reasons I think this scene is the best in the movie to me! It's an agony to see this xD However, in a good way... This scene is simply wonderful *-----*
I've seen this movie twice and this scene is the best, the proposal is the best that a man could ever say to woman and the british accent makes it better.

Although I love this 2005 movie version, I wish they kept some of the more compelling convos that they had in that series.
Brilliant and wonderful movie, beautiful actors... the Ox however, expert actors as they are... second to none, does a wonderful job as they all do, at sensitivity and vulnerability... but in the real world OMG... hard as nails with, no I won't say too much here, give too much away. Well they don't fool everyone LOL.
i'm sorry but how can some people not see that kylo and rey's relationship was soooo similar in case of the scenery, feelings, overall presence. to be clear i'm not comparing these stories, movies or whatever it's just that there is resemblence, and inspiration was for sure taken from this movie to star wars
this scene is proof that desire doesn't need to come with nudity. his eyes show it all.
Desire comes in any way🙄. Stop the futile comparison
Note the poster said "doesn't need to" come with nudity.
INDEED
very beautifully rendered complexity of emotion
This is the hottest no contact, fully clothed scene in film history
Laura Vander Horst yes this and Jane Eyre 2011 adaptation fire scene.

apparently that was ALL Matthew. He wasn't told to lean in like that - it just happened due to his chemistry with Kiera!

Love this scene. He has the prettiest blue eyes. And the rain just makes it that much more intense for some reason :D

the most painful confusion of feeling.
Finally she recovers.)
LIZZIE: (voice shaking) Sir, I
appreciate the struggle you have
been through, and I am very sorry
to have caused you pain.
Believe me, it was unconsciously done.
(A silence.)
DARCY: (stares) Is this your reply?
LIZZIE: Yes, sir.
DARCY: Are you laughing at me?
LIZZIE: No!
DARCY: Are you rejecting me?
LIZZIE: (pause) I'm sure that the
feelings which, as you've told

will help you in overcoming it.
(A silence, as this sinks in.
Neither of them move.
At last, Darcy speaks. He is very pale.)
DARCY: Might I ask why,
with so little endeavour at
civility, I am thus repulsed?
LIZZIE: (trembling with emotion)
I might as well enquire why, with so
evident a design of insulting me, you
chose to tell me that you liked me
against your better judgement. If I
was uncivil, that was some excuse -
DARCY: Believe me, I didn't mean
LIZZIE: But I have other
reasons, you know I have!
DARCY: What reasons?
LIZZIE: Do you think that anything
might tempt me to accept the man who
has ruined, perhaps for ever, the
happiness of a most beloved sister?
(Silence. Darcy looks as if he's
been struck across the face.)
LIZZIE: (cont'd) Do you deny it, Mr
Darcy? That you've separated a young
couple who loved each other, exposing
your friend to the censure of the
world for caprice, and my sister
to its derision for disappointed
hopes, and involving them both
in misery of the acutest kind?
DARCY: I do not deny it.
LIZZIE: (blurts out)
How could you do it?
DARCY: Because I believed your
sister indifferent to him.
LIZZIE: Indifferent?
DARCY: I watched them most carefully,
and realized his attachment
was much deeper than hers.
LIZZIE: That's because she's shy!
DARCY: Bingley too is modest,
and was persuaded that she
didn't feel strongly for him.
LIZZIE: Because you suggested it!
DARCY: I did it for his own good.
LIZZIE: My sister hardly shows her
true feelings to me! (pause, takes a
breath) I suppose you suspect that his
fortune had same bearing on the matter?
DARCY: (Sharply) No! I wouldn't
do your sister the dishonour.
Though it was suggested (stops)
LIZZIE: What was?
DARCY: It was made perfectly
clear that...
An advantageous marriage. . . (stops)
LIZZIE: Did my sister
give that impression?
DARCY: No!
(An awkward pause.)
DARCY: (cont'd) There was,
however, I have to admit...
the matter of your family.
LIZZIE: Our want of connection? Mr
Bingley didn't vex himself about that!
DARCY: No, it was more than that.
LIZZIE: How, sir?
DARCY: (pause, very uncomfortable) It
pains me to say this, but it was the
lack of propriety shown by your mother,
your three younger sisters - even, on
occasion, your father. Forgive me.
(Lizzie blushes. He has hit
home. Darcy paces up and down.)
DARCY: (cont'd) You and your sister
- I must exclude from this...
(Darcy stops. He is in turmoil.
Lizzie glares at him, ablaze.)
LIZZIE: (icy) And what about Mr Wickham?
DARCY: Mr Wickham?
LIZZIE: What excuse can you
give for your behaviour to him?
DARCY: You take an eager interest
in that gentleman's concerns!
LIZZIE: He told me of his misfortunes.
DARCY: Oh yes, his misfortunes
have been very great indeed!
LIZZIE: You have ruined his chances,
and yet treat him with sarcasm?
DARCY: So this is your opinion
of me! Thank you for explaining
so fully. Perhaps these offences
might have been overlooked, if
your pride had not been hurt -
LIZZIE: My pride?
DARCY: - by my honesty in admitting
scruples about our relationship.
Could you expect me to rejoice in the
inferiority of your circumstances?
LIZZIE: And those are the words of a
gentleman? From the first moment I
met you, your arrogance and conceit,
your selfish disdain of the feelings
of others, made me realize that you
were the last man in the world I could
ever be prevailed upon to marry.
(Darcy recoils, as if
slapped. A terrible silence.)
DARCY: Forgive me, madam, for
taking up so much of your time.
(He leaves, abruptly.)
(Lizzie watches him stride
away, through the rain.)

Me and my wife are gonna try our hand in acting by replicating this scene! Since the acting, dialog and emotion has to be the greatest of all time.
Every month on the day I am crying in bed from my period pain, I come back to this scene!
Lizzy.... She is one fiery girl! 🙌 Gives as good as she gets 👏👏👏
omg, I think I'm in love with mr. Darcy..
Did you notice him saying “please” before he said “Forgive me…?” 🔥
