I like the way you mounted the rod holders very good idea. As I have a canoe mine will sit much higher so tackle boxes will slide under the crate instead trying move things around in a one person canoe. Thanks for the tips & tricks.
Great series of videos. I like the rod holder set up you have going on here. I made the swing out rod holder that you made in one of your past videos that sets in one of the single rod holders in back. Thanks for taking the time to make this series.
Won’t the rods obstruct your paddle stroke? I have mine mounted directly behind me at 45 deg angles port & starboard like a shrimp trawler. I like it because I don’t have to twist around too much to stow or retrieve my rods. I’ll switch rods around so the holder on my casting arm is empty. Works great for me.
When I was out and about in the kayak (haven't done it for 2 seasons unfortunately), I only took 3 rods, so only had to worry about snagging/hitting two of the vertical rods behind me......which I have done on occasion when casting. :)
Like this idea. I always wondered about those kayaks with rods straight up and backcasts. I mostly flyfish and no way that would work. I use low level rod holders on sides of kayak. Some great information to have. Thanks Steve! 👍
I like the additions and mods to your kayak videos. I have some similar things done to my Lure for my YakAngling channel. Great Video!! Thanks for some really great Ideas.
Can you pull out the bottom rod without having to remove tote top one first? It kind of looks that way. Not nitpicking here just something that came to mind when visualizing why I would need this. It’s perfect for avoiding vegetation and under some overpasses. Thanks for what you do. 👍
I agree it is a little awkward to get the bottom rod out. But, with the offset, you just pivot the forward reel out of the wayh by sliding your hand under it while removing the bottom rod
I see you raise the crate a few inches on pvc to keep the contents dry. I achieved the same thing by cutting a pool noodle into two half circles about a foot long each. I attached them to the bottom of the crate with a couple zip ties pulled tight. I currently have the rounded side on the bottom, but in the spring I plan to turn them 180 degrees so the flat side is on the bottom for increased stability.
You do amazing work. If ever you decide to go pro (not the camera, but the designing of neat stuff), I have two Jon boats that could use some help. The newer one is 17 years old and the older one is coming up on 34 years old. The older one is a 16’ x 48” and the younger one is a 18’x 60”. The older one is my flats skiff - with 3 substantial folks (not fat, but substantial) it will float in 4” of water. The other one is welded and is a mite too heavy to pole in the wind. So, if you ever decide to hire out ……
lI ike the idea of the rods down like that, will need to give it a go. I had to google what a bump board was, never heard of it down here, we just use a stick-on measure tape on the side of the yak. I will definitely be building that rack mount for the milk crate in your other vid. With my yak, the rear seat is sort of low so remove it and used a small cut off from a boogie board to fill the gap and make it level. the rack looks much better though.
Angling them a little is a good idea but not that much. As someone mentioned it’s very difficult to reach them when they’re like that. Just don’t overhead cast on a kayak, learn to side cast if you don’t already know how
Thank you, I just can't wrap my head around all the people on you tube who have and make rod holders that are vertical. I feel like they have never been fishing. Especially river fishing
The only problem I see to doing that way, is you have to reach back so far to take your rods in and out that it can throw you off balance in your kayak. At least it does for me. It's a great idea it just doesn't work for me
I hadn't thought about reaching the rods. I believe angling the rod holder(s) is a very good idea for exactly the reasons Steve mentioned, but I'd use a steeper angle. I nearly lost a rod/reel combo out of a nearly horizontal rod holder when the line tangled into something unbeknownst to me and yanked the rod loose when the line tightened - and that was with a rod holder similar to what he had where the reel should lock it in place. It was sheer luck that I heard it happening and managed to grab it before it went into the water. So while I really like that idea, I'll probably use a single holder at a 30-45 deg angle.
I love almost all of your recommendations but I'm not a fan of this one unfortunately for a few reasons. 1) To get that bottom rod out, you'd have to remove the top rod or really find a way to move the other rod out of the way one-handed while not losing your balance. 2) The rods would stick out BEHIND the kayak and if you drift backwards towards the bank they could get hung up in reeds. Or if you're in a marina fishing docks and turn they could hit a dock and break your rod. Love your channel just not a fan of this one. Keep the videos coming 😀👍
IMPROVED DESIGN!! After watching this, check out the improvement I made - th-cam.com/video/2eg72cGYmyI/w-d-xo.html
From this video I couldn’t help but notice all of the fans you have in your shop. Just to let you know that you have a lot of fans out here too!
lol - need to stay cool!
wow as a new Kayak fisher I appreciate this video thank you
Glad it was helpful!
This is the best yak crate video of all. Thanks
Thanks! Appreciate it!

I like hitting the rivers and lakes here in Florida. Horizontal allows us to explore without our poles catching on bush. Some paths are narrow.

I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
Cool set up

Good question - no, the rods are far enough back and do not extend beyond the side of the kayak very much.

Great tip!
I was in the 3rd infantry division in Aschaffenburg, Germany 1969. Couldn't help but notice the army patch!
I was in 2/41 FA based out of Bad Kissingen. I spent the last year with the 3rd Brigade in A-burg. That's all gone now! Rock of the Marne!
good video.... informative and helpful. TY MH
Very welcome
Super ideas. What’s your solution for all these things falling out if you tip over?
You can cut the bottom off a second crate and zip tie one side to make a lid.
Thanks for sharing

It's a good winter project!
3rd ID. Thank you for your service sir.
My pleasure
Can you explain what a bump board is and it's use? Thanks
A bump board is a measuring stick used to determine the length of a fish
Thanks

Good point, but I'll stick with my approach.

Right on
where do you get your milk crates, what brand ???
I get them at Walmart. There is only one choice there. At Lowes or Home Depot, you can get the smaller size.
Wouldn't it still be a tangled mess and obstruction when you hook a fish when the roda are horizontal?
I do not think so because it is easier to work the fish around horizontal rods.
Steve what size pvc? Sched 40? Thanks
I was using 3/4 sched 40. I think it would work with 1/2 as well.
That SIR is a Chinamart STORAGE Crate. Not a TRUE Milkcrate!!!! 😉 LOL!
Thanks for that feedback

You do have to reach back a bit. I do not change rods very often, so that is not a real obstacle for me.

Good points. It all depends on personal preference
Just take one pole cures the pole problem.
lol! Correct!!
