My brother was the creative director for this spot and the whole "The Night Belongs to Michelob" series. I have a session tape. The stories he had were so much fun - I remember my mom telling me, "Pete is working with Eric Carlton?" Mom, Clapton?! The platinum album bears my brother's name - he passed away in August of this year.
I'm Class of 1986, I was talking to a woman and she said she was Class 0f 88, and I said when I think of 88 I think of Michelob beer and this song. Her eyes lit up and she remembered the commercials. 1988 was the glory days, now I drink Arnold palmers and hang out at Lowes instead of the bar.
This is suck a kickass version of writer JJ Cale and artist Eric Clapton 'After Midnight'. I just heard it on New Zealand radio station 'The Sound' [ www.thesound.co.nz/home.html ] Southland frequency 98.0FM, with DJ Dave White on deck. Now after the song had ended Dave gave we listeners the info that the version of 'After Midnight' that had just aired/played was and I quote 'An alternative 1988 remix]. So as I believed it was such an awesome version [the CRACK/meatier] sound of the snare drum was what particularly caught my attention. So congratulations to your brother Pete, he definitely knows his stuff/audio engineering skills. Omg I just read the end sentence of your comment and am so sorry to learn your bro passed away. Condolences Katherine Bauer that is so sad. Nevertheless I bet your wonderful bro led a full life. Audio engineers are special people. Can remember watching many films/documentaries on television of various rock star artists of the '60s/'70s/'80s era and seeing audio engineers in music making studios working hard while simultaneously puffing away like puffing Billy on cigs - so loving their work. Wow your bro worked some big time cheeses alright v fortunate man. And like I say this version of After Midnight really caught my ear today [16/07/2021] here in New Zealand - it clearly stood out to all other versions I have heard. I have loved music all my life. Bought my very first vinyl LP at the age of 12 with money I earned working a milk vendor round in the morning/afternoon, got paid $12 week in 1976 and it was good money and we worked hard for it too - I was only a small teenager, we worked in all weathers and where I live [bottom of the South Island] it can get real cold & wet especially in winter. I could carry 2 hand-held crates of 6 bottles of full 600ml milk each, one in each hand and run at the same time. We never walked. It got me really fit and I won the Intermediate School Form 2 Cross Country race for boys that year - quite a feat. It was the start of my 24 year sporting career. It came to abrupt end in 1990 at the height when I was a very successful road cyclist, triathlete and marathon runner - when I had my near-death motorcycle accident that ultimately resulted in me losing my entire left leg as high up as hip and left side of my pelvis, plus I suffered several serious internal injuries as well. But I had no head injuries and my spinal chord wasn't damaged. Doctors & surgeons who saved my life believed my high fitness level helped considerably in my surviving. Spent 101 days in 2 hospitals. Have suffered ever since from chronic stump neuropathic nerve pain that can be debilitating. However I continued in sport. In 1994 I set the World's Fastest Time for a lower limb amputee using crutches without a prosthesis or just on my one good right leg over the Marathon. My time of 5 hours 58 minutes 13 seconds remained unbeaten for 19 years and the amputee who beat it used hi-tech advanced crutches with built-in shock absorbers that provide a definite advantage over standard hospital crutches that I used. Between 1991 and 1998 I completed 6 half and 6 full Marathons on crutches on one leg. However such extreme performance doesn't come without a cost. In 2010 I had my good right leg hip joint replaced. I am married to the most amazing wife/woman/person in the world who is obviously my rock. She is easily my equal and has kept me in line when I stray sometimes...Oh and the first vinyl LP I ever bought when I was 12 was and I still have it in my collection: Deep Purple 'Machine Head'...In 1988 I traveled to London on my O.E. [overseas experience] when I was 25. I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd play Wembley Stadium on Saturday August 6th 1988. Some songs were just too fast in the old days. Glad he came up with this version. Same thing for the Foo Fighters with "Times Like These". The slow acoustic version is so much better.
Holy hell!! I LOVE this version! People often overlook Clapton in the late 80s, but the stuff he did in the late 80s is FIRE!!! Usally when I listen to this, my neighbors do too. :)
I have been listening to Clapton for almost 50 years. There are few words that actually describe his music. I have been blessed and humbled to listen to his music.
I always preferred this version. It sounded more like what I wanted to hear while drinking a beer at 1am. The orig version sounded like something to listen to during the day.
I imagine somebody at Anheuser-Busch thought something similar when they first heard this version. They might not have used the word "prowls," but I bet the idea for "the night belongs to Michelob" wasn't far behind. 😎 Now that I've heard the "prowls" description, I'll have to wear a "Manther" tattoo (just a temporary one) when I sing it at karaoke. 😁
This has got to be one of my all time favorites from Eric Clapton. He's been one of my favorite artists since his inception into the rock & roll world! One great talent he is. One of the "Guitar Gods" for sure. Thank you Eric for great music.
I remember when this slower version first came out. Immediately I liked it better than the original. It sounded a little harder and rougher . Very good.......
Only EC could cover a great tune true to the original JJ Cale masterpiece and then cover it in a way only a true bluesman could. The 1988 alternative version is truly a work of art. A timeless classic that just blows my mind every time I hear it. The 1st time was on MTV and my jaw hit the floor, it was an amazing experience sitting on my couch in Houston, Tejas and had to shake, jump and shout. And it wasn't even midnight more like 10 on a Saturday morning...
I first picked up a guitar as a teenager after hearing this song. Is it the best song ever? No. But, it just stuck me as right, and it still does. Sorry I can't explain it better.
I admire EC immensely. I think of him as a superb technician but pushing the music to the edge like Stevie Ray Vaughn comes hard to him. This is a superb instance when Eric 'let it fly'. Bravo!
hands down the best version of this song. so much more grit and balls to it!!! i crank up my surround sound when i play this or when it comes on the radio.
Clapton's instrumental prowess is what everyone focuses on and his vocals are hardly ever commented on......so let me the first to say I also love his singing, too
As Clapton aged he became more relaxed and let more of himself out through his music. He was pretty good when he was younger but now he's phenomenal. What a great artist.
My brother Inlaw passed away about 4 years ago just after midnight. I was ask to do the memorial service. What song do you think I played? You got it! What a Celebration of life! Thank you Eric for blessing us with Perfection!!!
Oh, this gave me goosebumps - my late brother was the creative director for DDB Needham who produced the Night Belongs to Michelob series. He was awarded a platinum album and is credited as the producer of this version.
Phenomenal! The last time I actually purchased something based on a commercial I'd seen on TV was the Michelob/Eric Clapton collaboration. That's all I would drink at jazz clubs or at home for years. God bless Eric Clapton, a legend if ever there was one!
@2:04 That is the sound of 80s blues guitar. Sparkly overdrive saturated in chorus effect. It ain't a bad thing. It's like ZZ Top/Billy Gibbons on a Stratocaster. Love it.
A jj Cale fan since his first album in 1972. It's obvios that Clapton is too. I loved this song when it first came out, but i wasn't that crazy about Clapton's first version of this song. I think this time he's got it where he wanted it in the first place. Love it. Could have come out of the 70's like the original.
This is talent,,, change the kind of sound,, from one version to another ,,,,, only few can do anything like this,,, Clapton, Page, Frampton, Gilmour, Richards,Harrison, Knopfler, Gibbons, Hendrix, Santana, Halen, The Edge, Petty, etc. etc.
My dad bought me the Crossroads Box Set in 1987 (I was 6) because I saw the Michelob commercials with this version and was caught by the groove and feel. I found an E.C 8 track at the house and it had the original version. I put it in and was disappointed that it sounded nothing like this. My dad's favorite guitarist was E.C. and he knew this was on the Crossroads set. He, being on Social Security Disability and having jack shit for a stipend, dropped $50 for me to have this four-cassette box set. He died the next year, at age 34. Luckily I have a great long-term memory, and I remember this all vividly. We went to Audio Wizard on South Main Street and he dropped fifty bucks. This was a lot of money I 1987, and especially a lot of money for him. I wanted this box set for this song, and also."White Room" from the Cream era, because it was on a "Freedom Rock" commercial that played on TV when I would go and see him. We would make fun of the hippies who had a likeness to Cheech and Chong. I look back all these years later and realize what a sacrifice it was for him to buy this for me. I realize that despite the fucked up arrangement that his life had become, he did love me and care about me. He also bought me Led Zeppelin IV, and I remember not being into it until two years after he died, and then I wore it out. This version will always have a special place in my heart. It isn't often that I truly miss my dad, because it happened so young, but when it hits, it hits deep. So, when I hear this song, the night belongs not to Michelob, but to J. Kevin Taylor, 1955-1989. Forever in my heart.
My dad always loved this song in the early 90's and it was hard to find, that was before the internet, but he found it on a cd... i LOVE this version so much better then the other.....
Saw you in Concert 1988 and this rendition sent me out of New Hampshire to take on a recording engineering focus. You changed my life EC - now and forever!
ive seen santana live a couple times out in vegas and he still is so great, but what brought me to this song was the jerry garcia band, i never knew this was a clapton song, but its still a completely different song than ive been used to hearing

This version blows away the original release. I honestly can't even really listen to the original one ever since I heard this one.
I agree 100 percent
I will be 69 years old Thursday. I've listened to this legend over 50 years. They call me OG, original granny. I still dance
Rock it GIRL. THE BEST MUSIC OF history
69 years young !
absolutely the best version ever, 31 years later this song is timeless !!
Wow 31 years it's bin??
Only man to recreate his older music into something new! And sell it hard to a new generation.
Some songs were just too fast in the old days. Glad he came up with this version. Same thing for the Foo Fighters with "Times Like These". The slow acoustic version is so much better.

Indeed...But I am just turning 55( double nickels)😉
By far the greatest music of all time.... Bar none
I always preferred this version. It sounded more like what I wanted to hear while drinking a beer at 1am. The orig version sounded like something to listen to during the day.
Absolutely a guitar wizard. Eric Clapton is hands down a gifted singer, musician and composer. The best of all time. My opinion.
Most of his songs are Jj cale covers
This song so kicks ass, that guitar is tight!!!
Shit yes
The original version is cool, but this version just PROWLS!! Love it!
Pure Swagger
...just PROWELS is a fantastic description of this song, but watch with the man who wrote it JJ Cale talk about slow hand.
@@diablosarm9092 agree..
Perfect description. My favorite version of this song

This song is so intense to me, it just keeps on building, bad ass song
The song will take you back to the good days the 80s. Back when music was music and Eric Clapton was the king of the Stratocaster
He still is...
I went on a winning streak at a dice table in Vegas after this song came on. Can it get any better than this?
OMG, the bass player is right on, whoa. This is the best version ever done, soulful and sweet just like JJ would have loved.
Nathan East rocks that bass
Is this Jeff Porcaro on drums?
@@TheBassgoddess Wow, thanks for that info
@@kai326 I think it's Andy Newmark?
I'm sure JJ heard it.

Maxoman427 .. u gotta love the manic goofball solo of the original though..
And it's become here a serious blues tune!
Original was done by its writer, JJ Cale
@@TracySmith-xy9tq That's the best version ~ the original JJ Cale one. Can't touch that (and I love Clapton).
I agree
Haven’t heard it in years. This was always my favorite version.
we walked into a bar around june/july 1988 and this song came on the music channel on tv amd right away i was blown away by this version
This spoiled the original version for me forever... So bluesy..just amazing.
I love the guitar solo....tempo is perfect

Kick ass version! Love it

Eric's homage to JJ Cale's original version. Clearly an exquisite composition.
My favorite version. I broke a drum stick while playing it! Bad ass whiskey blues!

this is a damn good remake! done by the Maestro himself! Listen to that full bass line from Nathan East!
