Periphery - Reptile (Drum Cover // Lockdown Challenge)

- This was my personal challenge for the lockdown. Since all gigs were cancelled, there was a lot of time to practice. Although I have always been into prog, I only discovered Periphery at the end of last year. I've never played a blast beat before and with all the technical parts in Reptile I chose this song as one of my goals to achieve by August. It's not perfect yet and not 100% identical to the original drum parts, but a deadline is a deadline ;) I tried to cover the most important fills and grooves and add my own style to it.

Came for the two breakdowns/chugging parts, stayed for the whole damn thing. I’ve loved this song ever since I heard it, and while I love to play it, it’s still taking some listening/studying to get everything down. You however, have absolutely nailed it!

You know someone is legit when they make it look almost effortless. Awesome cover man. Have decided I'm gonna give it a shot and maybe split it in 2 sections kinda like the song. Halpern is one of my faves and I worked my ass off to get Garden in the Bones down earlier this year. Looks very challenging but cant wait!

Nicht meine Musik, aber immer wieder faszinierend zu beobachten, wie mühelos das Spiel aussieht. Elegant aus den Handgelenken gespielt, die Unterarme sind fast bewegungslos, selbst Aktionen rund um das gesamte Drumset sehen nie nach Hektik und Zeitnot aus.
Ich glaube, diese Art zu spielen hat viele Vorteile. Sieht jedenfalls sehr beeindruckend aus.
Manchmal bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob es für den Sound nicht besser wäre noch mehr Energie aus den Armen zu holen. Allerdings muss ich mich da super krass drauf konzentrieren…

THIS. IS. INSAAAAAAANELY GOOD!!! Did you transcribe and map the parts yourself? Huge kudos for the solo stab section work across the high-hat, as that seems to be the hardest part to break down from my perspective. The kit sounds awesome too!! :) Toms are superbly tuned, but I'd love a bit more bass drum love, both in the mix but also....get a camera on that bad boy! :) Overall - This is the drum cover I've been waiting for with good playing, production, set and lighting. Massive congratulations to you! - This video will surely fly high. :)
Thank you so much! I agree with you that the kick could stick a little more out in the mix. I mixed this during vacation on headphones. As I'm always tempted to mix the kick too loud on headphones I corrected it a little. Unfortunately too much. You never stop learning:) I will add a kick drum cam for sure next time.
