Hi all! I was so happy to hear you bring up the channels that YOU use for research- and pleasantly surprised to hear you shout out “Norse Magic and Beliefs”. He is definitely one of my favorite channels for all things Norse history and Norse Paganism. Couldn’t recommend the channel more highly. I love that you enjoy it too! If you (or your listeners) are into podcasts, “Saga Thing” is an excellent one. They read and analyze the sagas. And, of course, on TH-cam, Jackson Crawford is phenomenal and Arith Härgar. Thank you for always digging deep and applying real world mythology/faiths to the fantasy world created by GRRM. I don’t think you’re given enough recognition, @DavidLightbringer. You have to put in a TON of hours researching, analyzing, and scripting every single video. You do much more than any other ASOIAF channel that I’ve run across and I just wanted you to know, it IS recognized and appreciated. Anyway…. Didn’t mean to write an entire essay here. I just really wanted to say: Thanks- and I hope that you and all of the MythHead family are having a fantastic day!
Love is the death of duty might be a direct reference to Joseph Campbell who wrote and talked at great length about chivalric love, the Arthurian legend cycle and what he ultimately summed up as Credo vs Libido.
Small correction for @02:14:13, brân is Welsh for crow, the Welsh for raven is 'cigfran' (pronounced kigvran) which literally means meat/flesh-crow. But realistically brân could be used for most corvids. I'm not a fluent Welsh speaker, but I do live near Cwmbran, the valley of crows!!
Wow interesting especially since I don’t believe Bloodraven is the 3eyed crow (way to much emphasis in the story on the difference between crows and ravens) and there is another theory I heard that the 3 eyed crow is Bran communicating with himself in a time travelly way. They never mentioned that Bran’s name can be translated to crow. Bran when his 3rd eye is opened would be the 3 eyed crow!
Thanks again to everyone. I know a lot of us were busy with preparations/family stuff but we still had some excellent discussion. Have a great holiday everyone 😊
How I miss!?!? Happy Holodays! Listening to this through headphones whilst partner is snoring, nearly 4 am Christmas morning! Merry garth children of LML ❤🎉
It can be very disheartening to put all your efforts into a project and not be appreciated (aka TH-cam screwing you over) - You are doing a great job, David! Thank you so much for all the amazing content!!!
Couldn't catch this live, astonished at the amount of references and symbolism in ASOIAF. I feel very grateful for this wonderful YT channel and to you for this wonderful content.
Dang I was driving outside of cell service in the boonies of Western Australia during this! Happy to get to the party on my Christmas Day nevertheless! 🎅🎄🥳
I saw the humming in the light of brans hodoring of him. Perhaps especially because he likes dancing, likes music. I saw it as someone who has lost their song, lost their singing voice - or had it squashed down like his consciousness is when bran wargs him
@@anorangetabby If the weirwoods drink sacrificial blood, arrows made from weirwood branches could contain a source of blood magic transmuted into ice magic. And we all know that ice is super effective against dragons!
In the show, yes, but the only source of dragons versus ice in the books that I remember, (please remind me of others if I have forgotten) is Silver Wing not wanting to or not being able to fly over the wall. I see that as repellant, not a way to kill them. They aren't invincible, certainly, but they seem less vulnerable to ice magic than ice magic is to them. They have to have something though... something that will be revealed that puts them on less superior footing in the books. George doesn't do absolute heroism. Ice spears seen easy and obvious...do you think it will be ice spears like in the show though?
@@anorangetabby It was a pokémon reference! But I suppose, since the series is called A Song of Ice and Fire, these two opposite forms of magic will be able to affect each other. So hypothetically, the Others will be vulnerable to dragonfire, but dragons may also be vulnerable to ice magic. [Arrax] correction: Vermax was also said to not thrive in the North, didn't like the cold, etc., if I remember correctly.
Idk anything about Pokemon. 😂 I remember people being crazy about it when it came out, but I was too old to get into it. Vermax went North, Arrax was murdered over Storm's End by Nanna Vhagar. Poor little anxious baby dragon. 😢 You don't f*ck with Nanna though. She'll put you in your place lol.
Also, for Hodor’s hum = horn, there’s a horn involved with the Wild Hunt Odin leads and if you go to the fairy (aka ghost) ball, you’ll come back lifetimes late, if at all. And if my own adhd’s not leading me astray, I thinnnk the Hunt’s supposed to have pretty eerie, raucous music in some versions?
It just hit me... Hodor shares a name with the two Frey boys who were sent North to serve as squires, one of whom was murdered in Winterfell, and with the family patriarch, who went and spilled some, not just king's blood, but Stark king's blood, town at the Twins. Lord Walder's "higher purpose" would have been to increase his family's power and prestige... and Azor Ahai did the Awful Thing create the sword Lightbringer, Walder Frey did the Awful Thing ( violated hospitality) and sacrificed a king to his own ego, and a Walder Frey was "sacrificed" at Winterfell (most likely to the cause of installing Rickon in the seat at Winterfell) and Bran did the Awful Thing (skinchanged Hodor) to turn a guy named Walder into a doorstop, effectively sacrificing him... so either there's a blood connection to House Frey that people who share the name of the patriarch get caught up in even if not related, or the Old Gods really don't like guys named Walder... Maybe the Red Wedding resonated backward and forward in time? Is there a weirwood in the Godswood at the Twins?
It's strange how the Baldur mistletoe myth is like a combo of Persephone and Achilles myths..😮 Thank you for this awesome stream! It was riveting AND passed the time well as I was making soup that took hours!

Great stream, as always! I'm a big fan of the Baldur's Gate series, I'll try to shed some light on it for you. Baldur's Gate is a city founded by a seafaring merchant and explorer named Balduran, and the setting for the main action of the first and third games. All of the games revolve around some maniac's scheme to take up the powers of the dead god Bhaal, who is the father of the protagonist. The first game's antagonist is your evil half-brother, Sarevok, who wants to take up Bhaal's power and begin a war of conquest. All in all, it seems like the writers for the game and the setting liked the name and sliced up pieces of his story for the plot points.
36:44 if Bran is The Anvil and Jon is the Hammer that means there is also a Waters. Which makes me think about Dany and the watery Womb of the world stuff and Nissa Nissa possibly being a goddess of the summer/ Green Sea. Makes me think this is referring back to the idea of the Hammer of the Waters, and the original ritual that caused it. Makes me wonder if azir ahai also at one point needed to be carried arround by some icy giant type
Merry Christmas David... Gary from Nerdrotic just mentioned you in his Christmas Special Show with MauLer as he's a big fan of your Lore videos. Happy Holidays Lord Lightbringer
"Tuneless humming" -- Been enjoying your work and that of others you recommend. Thanks for all the fascinating content. Wanted to throw an idea out about Hodor's tuneless humming (love of music, dancing), though it might be a stretch or wishful thinking on my part. Reminded me of an idea posited by David Corngold in a lit crit of Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis." In Kafka's story, Gregor's sister plays violin and Gregor, the beetle, is strangely attracted to it, follows it. It is a reference to semiotics and the function of language -- signs which are pairings of signifiers and signifieds that convey meaning. Music is the only language system whose signs have no signified, yet music still communicates / shares something bearing meaning, whether an emotion, feeling, or spirit. In Kafka's story, Gregor's character (according to Corngold) is a metaphor for a metaphor, a "signifier" without a "signified." Maybe George R. R. Martin was playing around with the same idea with regard to Hodor? I know -- I went out on a branch (and jumped out of the tree), but I wanted to introduce the possibility.
Only found your channel recently brother, been consuming your content like crazy. The "Duck tails" woohoo bit made me laugh so much. Brilliant videos dude, thanks for your hard work. Subsribed :)
I think I forgot to include in my PyPal that a "Reed" was used to kill Baldr in the old Germanic myth and not a mistletoe (which I believe Crecganford shares near the end of his Baldr Hodr video). Ignoring my Howland Reed = Hodr tinfoil ;), curious how you think Meera and Jojen's presence as the "Reeds" play into your awesome theory of Bran (Baldr) and Hodor.
9 months late with this comment but just catching up with your videos. Bran and Hodor are a lot like Master Blaster in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. They are a unit. The little one Master is the brains, he runs underworld. Blaster is the muscle, together they can be very powerful. I had to bring it up when you said Hodor ruled the underworld.
Thanks again for a great stream. One thing I picked up at the end. I believe Bran seeing the COF as Arya fighting the wights supports the theory that Arya will give the Gift to the wights. In other words her role in Team Stark is to help Bran sever the connection between the Others and their wights. What do you think?
you mentioned Bran & Hodor together becoming a knight right after referencing Hodor’s swinging amplitude, and all i’m thinking is Bran + Hodor = The Long K/night
When you read the part about the game lord of the crossing…I realized that in storm of swords the Catelyn chapter 49 Frey says mayhaps twice before he gives rob and catelyn guest rights. Maybe foreshadowing that he plans to kill them?
Maybe Hodor’s humming has something to do with dirges? Or back to the shamanic wind? The dancing and music loving does seem to be associated with death a lot (Orpheus, Masque of the Red Death, the whole “my true lover is death” correlates since dancing is for lovers, “and the band played on” scenarios, etc), but not entirely sure of the details.
Definitely unorthodox take on bits of Norse Myth, but reading about it - never heard of these elements and it is interesting. Especially how in some of Nanna stuff has Baldr having nightmares about her when she dumps his ass
Goodness- barely 10 minutes in and this has already been so interesting... I will probably feel inclined to further comment at some point, but I just had to remark on that.
Remember reading the worst tarot card to get is ten of swords ⚔️ but it is funny seeing all the crumbs he did with Doors and Hodor. Like literally saying Hodor having trouble with doors 🚪 😂😂
Hold the door as a metaphor - the door could mean the entry into another mind or advancing Bran’s abilities to enter the Weirwood net. Also, he is “holding the door” of opportunity for Bran to go north of the wall and fulfill his self-fulfilling destiny. Sadly ironic that he has never had the agency to choose to “hold the door” for Bran’s story. His name is his metaphorical purpose.
I think this is George’s commentary about reducing the small folk or individuals to their utility as tools for those in positions of power. Because of the self-fulfilling destiny cycle of Bran Hodoring Hodor, it seems from Bran’s narrative that he only sees Hodor as a tool to metaphorically Hold the Door in order to enable Bran to fulfill his own needs and ambitions. Even when he enters Hodor’s mind, he seems to disregard Hodor’s own traumatizing experience and adverse reactions to this psychological assault/invasion, ignoring him as he “wimpers” throughout the colonization of his mind.
Hodor likes to bathe. Dunk likes to bathe. He is drowned and resurrected by an Ironborn, in the Sworn Sword. Dunk is an orphan from Flee Bottom, super strong, can take more beating than any normal human? Is he part Squisher? And part giant, perhaps?
