    Hi Jason, I feel very lucky to find your channel as I'm starting to record myself doing some singing and all the info you're sharing is coming super handy.
    I've got a couple of questions, sorry if they sound a bit silly but I can't find a clear answer and I think you'rethe rightpersonto ask to:
    1- I have a focusrite scarlet 2i2 and it has only 1 bottom to activate phantom power (48V), I already have a condenser mic that comes with the whole bundle, if I plug that mic and a dynamic mic, could the phantom power damage the dynamic mic?
    2- which dynamic mic would you recommend out of shure SM58 and shure beta 58A?
    Thanks a lot in advance for your answer and please keep posting this videos to help lost people like me 😅
    Take care and stay safe 😉

      Hey Saro. Thanks for kind words. And it's a great question actually: 1) Phantom Power will not damage your Dynamic mic; I'm assuming you're planning on connecting a dynamic mic via the Instrument input on the 2i2? Just be mindful when adjusting gain there, but outside of that, you'll be fine. 2) I still use SM58s but I absolutely LOVE the Beta58a. Again, slightly different sounds (depending on voice) but I would personally choose the Beta58. Both great mics, but the Beta has just a little extra (particularly for voices)

      @@jasonlevinevideo great!!! Beta 58A it is!!!
      Ok, let me give you a bit more "complex" situation: same focusrite 2i2, Beta 58A plugged to input 1 to record my voice (heavy/power metal kinda stratovarius let's say) and to input 2 the condenser mic to simultaneously record my acoustic guitar, which means 48V has to be on, will that work all connected like that without having to plug/unplug anything or with the risk of damaging anything?
      Again, super grateful for your help and pleasantly surprised for your quick response

      Phantom Power (48v) is typically meant to power the XLR inputs on a device; so in this case, you would switch the order here, with your condenser mic (via XLR) into input 1 and the Beta mic (via a 1/4" connection/adaptor) into Input 2.

    I am unsure of how to find the microphone for my voice. What do you do if you sound like a child(boy) through a microphone when you are an adult woman? My voice is a little bit lower than some women. And I want to know is there something to look for in a microphone or something I can do in eq or some setting I can change? Or is it just trial and error to find a mic that won't do this? I have lots of other criteria's for a microphone that I want but this is the hardest to figure out for me. I know if a mic has a gain knob, mute button, mic monitoring, volume knob, multiple polar patterns, sound settings like a limiter, de popper, compressor, gate, eq settings, as well as XLR for the future and USB but how can a mic make me sound more like an adult. I have tried out a few microphones, Samson Q2U, it makes my voice sound brighter, I do think this microphone sounds nice, a yeti classic and nano which sounded good(both have sound settings like the gate, compressor, limiter and so on), and then a razer seiren x which I did not like, it made my voice sound muddy and lower. Could a preamp with an XLR mic like the samson Q2U help with this? Not the samson in particular but a preamp and xlr combo. The elgato wave xlr and the Focusrite Scarlett come to mind. As they are on the lower end. I haven't seen a lot under 100 so far.

    Hi Jason.. which is better neuman u87 vs sennheiser mkh 416.. presently i use samson q2u a dynamic mic, should i change my mic or not for voice overs?.. also thanks a lot for all the audio series on adobe audition..

    • @jasonlevinevideo
      @jasonlevinevideo  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Neumann U87 is an industry standard, and a truly flawless microphone (particularly for vocals). It's a bit overkill for VO (because of cost) but it's an instantly recognizable, magical sound. MKH416 (which I also have) is also an industry standard for live dialog capture (mainly for film). It's a ok VO mic, but it's a totally different sound because it's not a large diaphragm condenser (like the Neumann). It won't be as 'big/rich' sounding, but it does automatically reject unwanted frequencies common to voice. I'm not as familiar with the q2u, but if you're getting a good sound, stick with it. As I say in the video, everyone's voice will sound a little different on each mic. I typically recommend large diaphragm condensers for VO (ie, commercials) but for dialog replacement (ADR), you may want something like an MKH416 given its somewhat neutral frequency signature and extremely narrow polar pattern.

    Hi Jason! I run a music school and have a group recital coming up that I want to livestream to our Facebook group. I want to record a vocal group of 9 young teenagers (backing track accompaniment). My choice of mics are Audio Technica AT2020 VGA or AKG C10005 and also have dynamic mics and a 4 pack wireless mic set (bought cheaply on Wish). Was hoping you could steer me in the right direction on how to best mic/record this for livestream 👉👆👈👇✌️

    • @jasonlevinevideo
      @jasonlevinevideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gabrielle. So if I'm understanding correctly, you'll be streaming 9 singers live and the plan is to have them all singing together? While the C1000 *can* be used for vocals, a large diaphragm side-address condenser (like the 2020) is preferable, particularly if you'll have people in a semi-circle around it, singing ensemble. Ideally, if you had a multi-pattern condenser (that did Figure-8) you could have half the group on one side of the mic and the other half facing them... but the 2020 only does Cardioid. I don't know what your sound device is, but if it has enough inputs to support (6) microphones, that might be better for a 'recording'... but to be honest, there's nothing like a truly organic, natural blend of voices all crowded around a microphone (where the physical space/placement is key in delivering a homogenized/unified vocal sound)... If you have the space, you could do all nine in front of the 2020, spaced probably 3-5 feet back (depending on the room). I'd do a test and see how it sounds. While you could have multiple people sing into the C1000, it just isn't designed for this...but it could work. So you could have 1/2 on the 2020 and the other half on the C1000 (top-address) which could create a nice L/R stereo image. LMK.

      @@jasonlevinevideo Thanks Jason! Yes, that's correct, I have 9 young teenage voices singing together with a backing track - in parts we break it down but always minimum 3 voices. Would you clump the groups of 3 together, or space them out equally across the group of 9? Sounds like the 2020 3-5 feet away from mic will be the simplest given it's my first livestream recording. I agree that an organic, natural blend of voices crowded around a mic is pretty special, especially given their age and ability. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain how it all works, We'll test it out this weekend!

      @@jasonlevinevideo The audio worked well with the 2020 and the CanonM50 video quality was great too but streaming it directly to Facebook in a test run had some syncing issues. Hey Jason, what do you think about using a Zoom H1 as a voice over pod cast mic with processing?

    • @jasonlevinevideo
      @jasonlevinevideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Neon. I'm guessing you're using the X/Y mic for you and a guest (presumably)? I've got the H1 and I think the capture is certainly good enough/clean enough for Podcast... in the right environment. The mic capsules can be a bit sensitive and less forgiving in ambient environments; but in a dry, deadened space, I think they're absolutely legit (with a little processing after the fact)

I'm a live playing kinda dude anyway, but it would be nice to be able to sequence stuff every now and again :) adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911314-audition/suggestions/35212846-midi-and-vst-support
