ESSAY ON | Moral Relativism in No Country For Old Men

  • A breakdown of the Coen Brothers' film, No Country For Old Men, as a broader conversation about moral relativism.
    In today's climate of absolutism and political correctness gone awry, we stand to benefit from the nuanced subtleties of moral relativism - the concept that 'moral judgments are true or false only relative to some particular standpoint (for instance, that of a culture or a historical period) and that no standpoint is uniquely privileged over all others.' Simply put, everything is subjective.

    Carter Burwell
    All clips of the Coen Brothers' film, No Country For Old Men, is the property of Miramax, Paramount Vantage and Scott Rudin Productions, and the use of the film in this video is purely intended for educational purposes.

    What a brilliant essay, and what great analysis.
    But, the question is;
    Is Anton Chigurh a force of nature or just psychopathic killer, who follows his own rules ?

      That question is answered in the car crash. His chances of death are just as equal to anyone else’s. He’s just a man

    This strikes me as one of the finest, most succinct and brilliant film analyses I have ever seen (or read for that matter). Focusing on a key philosophical concept grounds the commentary. I look for many more reviews. Note: I have not read any of the other comments as of this writing, but I'm sure that someone has already mentioned that the metaphorical nooses are fan belts.

    It isn't that the world is becoming more 'evil' - it's simply mankind's struggle, though failing, to not return to the wild where morality does not exist, nor within should it. Isn't it so curious that we often look upon the wilderness of the world with awe and reverence which is devoid of applied laws of any sort, yet still the epitome of the peace and order we utterly fail at bringing amongst ourselves?

    I've watched several essays analyzing parts or the whole of this movie. I think this was the deepest, and also the most insightful, dive into the film. Most essayists tend to focus on the final line, "And then I woke up," as a declaration of hopelessness. Obviously there's some ambivalence, and I assume neither Cormac nor Joel and Ethan have any interest in clarifying. But I personally prefer the hopeful interpretation. So thanks for that.

    • @EssaysonFrame
      @EssaysonFrame  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ted Naifeh thank you for the incredibly kind feedback. Any films you'd suggest we discuss? We're always excited to hear from other engaged film fans.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tough one. I'd say that a popular current film would boost your brand, and so something like Wonder Woman might be interesting. If you had a unique take on it, of course. But any film would be interesting, especially if you think you could examine it from an unusual angle. As a fan of these video essays, I've noticed that what gives them a boost is some specific critique, like the essay about Marvel's mediocre movie scores, or color grading (which I thought was off the mark, but it gave Patrick Willems good exposure) or Tony Zhou's examination of Edgar Wright's use of editing for comedy. Nerdwriter's examination of intertextuality. These made the rounds on social media.
      I don't know how interested you are in exposure, but I find that the videos that pop up the most on facebook are the ones with the snappy angle no one else is commenting on. I feel like you could do something like that as well as anyone. There's always room for a fresh take on great films. Like the one you did on Jurassic Park, for example. Great job.
      But if you really want to pin me down to a specific movie, I'd say Labyrinth. I feel like everyone loves that one, and no one knows why (other than David Bowie's bulge, of course.) But there's a lot more going on with that movie than people give it credit for. It's cheesy, yes, but it's also a great, complex coming of age story that gets at things most princessy 'girl growing up' stories ignore. Might be worth your time.

    • @EssaysonFrame
      @EssaysonFrame  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ted Naifeh Labyrinth is a solid pick - I have a few friends who have a lifelong appreciation for that film. I was a latecomer (first watched it a couple of years ago), and loved it. But, you're right - explaining 'why' is harder to specify. Will consider. Thanks for the feedback - I already consider this essay endeavor a success when it brings me into contact with fellow film fans. Thanks!

    Great analysis. The gas station scene fascinates me. I have bipolar, and I know what it's like to experience delusions, where principles can dominate anything in the real world. This paradigm was a lense that was my own construction. It was entirely subjective what they were, but totally objective following them once established. And it was the combination of the 2 that lead to an existence that was equally logical and isolating.
    In short, when people say he's crazy, he is. Specifically he's psychotic, and even more specifically, delusional. And yes, delusional people are following their own morals.

    I agree with you, but not totally, Anton gets antagonistic with the clerk after he points out he came from Dallas after see noticed the car plates, he doesn't want to be seen, and if someone "sees him" it is better if he turns dead. The accountant might have lived or might have died, it all depends of his answer to Anton, and how convincing he was to Anton as he answered the question "did you see me?"

    This essay gets off on the wrong foot ... Ed Tom isn't worried about moral uncertainty. He knows immorality with he sees it! He's just shocked at the level of evil that's come along.
    Moral Relativism isn't even taught by most good philosophy departments anymore because it's so full of internal inconsistency. It's not worthy of teaching. You might say Chigurh operates on different moral principles than those around him, but moral disagreements don't imply moral relativism, which is the view that literally no one is right, and no one is wrong, when it comes to moral assertions. Just as disagreement about the shape of the earth, God's existence, or climate change does not imply no one is ultimately right or wrong about those questions.

    • @whatkey6463
      @whatkey6463 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appleblade The problem with a criticism of moral relativism is, you are never outside of the box.

    • @Appleblade
      @Appleblade 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      By 'outside the box' I assume you mean you have to rely on your own judgment instead of direct contact with public reality or something? Isn't that true of everything? 2 + 2 = 4, blue is a color, etc.?

    This move is worthy as an American take on Dostoyevsky and Nitsche
    It shows u what hPpens as a alternative
    It is even called Nihilism taking over Usa.
    Just like roskolnikpff murders a old pawnshop lady for apparently no reason.abut then we figure out what his motives were .(crime and punishment)

  • @pumpkin6429
    @pumpkin6429 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You aren't even old enough to be watching these fucking movies. Go enjoy your youth. Stop trying to be older than you are. You'll regret it once you are an adult and realise that you spent your childhood trying to appeal to those who don't care one way or the other.
    They act as if they care. They make you feel as if they care. But they don't care.
    I've been there. You don't wanna be there.
