Dr. Ellie Sattler | The Most Important Character of Jurassic Park
On this edition of Essays on Frame, we take a fresh look at a familiar classic - Jurassic Park. Sure, we understand the power behind the film's special effects, its cinematography, its writing and its score. But, we're here to argue that, perhaps, the film owes a great deal of its success to a certain paleobotanist...Dr. Ellie Sattler.
Allow us to explain...
Mike Hill's breakdown of the film (as mentioned in the video):

ESSAY ON | Anatomy of Character in L.A. Confidential
มุมมอง 25K7 ปีที่แล้ว
On the 20th Anniversary of the film's release, we honor its status as a contemporary classic by asking one simple question - how did it earn such regard? While there are several possible reasons, we explore the complex and compelling arcs of the film's three main characters. Specifically, we tackle their perspectives through the lens of sociology. Enjoy! All film footage is the property of Warn...
ESSAY ON | Moral Relativism in No Country For Old Men
มุมมอง 19K8 ปีที่แล้ว
A breakdown of the Coen Brothers' film, No Country For Old Men, as a broader conversation about moral relativism. In today's climate of absolutism and political correctness gone awry, we stand to benefit from the nuanced subtleties of moral relativism - the concept that 'moral judgments are true or false only relative to some particular standpoint (for instance, that of a culture or a historica...

For someone who ends up in a place, maybe through no fault of their own, that many would consider dark or dirty Boogie Nights IS an expositional story. I grew up in a very shitty neighborhood-or The Hood if you wanna go that route. I wasn’t a success story that worked hard in school and got out, in fact I did just about everything wrong a young male in the city could: had a child at 15, basically limiting both the mother’s life and my child’s life by being a part-time father. I got involved with a group of kids who were all on their way to being lifelong criminals, and got locked up when I was 16 in one of the worst juvenile detention facilities in the country. Through all this, and into my 20s when the shit going down got real, there were always people with a story, looking for redemption or worse: looking for notoriety. I’ve met some horrible people in my time but you’d be surprised how many of them had one or two redeeming qualities. Boogie Nights shows the characters as they are, some are just naive, some have ulterior motives, and some are just wounded people looking for something to heal their soul. I love this movie cuz it showed me another world like the one I lived in: with moral gray areas and people that don’t care about hurting others if it suits their purpose, but it also showed me a family like a few of my friends and I became. I’m in my 40s now, and out of the 25-30 kids I called friends as a teenager there’s 2 of us that are still alive and not doing a life bid. The funny part is Boogie Nights was both of our favorite movies.

Ellie stays in my heart as one of the best characters I have ever seen on screen, as well as the woman that told me women in stem are possible. I didn't go into a stem field, but have an intense interest, and I thank her for that. It's amazing to see her and Laura Dern get the recognition they deserve.

Great video :) Boogie Nights is in my top 3 fave films of all time and I never tire of revisiting it's many many layers of story, and as you say, it is ostensibly Dirk's story, but every character has an arc told so beautifully, nothing ever feels like exposition, you always feel like you as a viewer are a voyeur on these peoples intimate moments of connection and Dirk has so much interesting, twisted, fragile humanity swirling around him (in Rollergirls case, literally!) that even characters he never meets have arcs, wonderful film making indeed. This was a great essay, love your work :)

No… More what happens if morality collapses. This move is worthy as an American take on Dostoyevsky and Nitsche It shows u what hPpens as a alternative It is even called Nihilism taking over Usa. Just like roskolnikpff murders a old pawnshop lady for apparently no reason.abut then we figure out what his motives were .(crime and punishment)
