A First Look At Fedora 36 i3 Spin (If I Get It Installed)

  • Fedora 36 has been released and instead of looking at the flagship GNOME edition of Fedora, today I'm taking a first look at Fedora 36 i3 Spin. Fedora i3 would make a perfect starting point for those wanting a minimal Fedora installation where they want to build their desktop from the ground up.

    Yes, I missed the 'liveinst' instructions in the terminal. But I think many if not most users would miss this, because why would I open a terminal and expect to find instructions on how to launch a GRAPHICAL installer? I wouldn't. The real problem is there are no instructions referring to 'liveinst' anywhere on the Fedora website. I don't think anyone would look for instructions on launching a GUI app in a terminal. I mentioned that this distro seems more like an automated spin with vanilla i3 thrown on top of Fedora. If this distro has any real devs though, they need to seriously add some documentation. And they need to add an easier to find launcher for the installer, or simply have the installer autostart in the live environment. Or create a simple welcome application that autostarts and points to the docs and the installer.

    • @TBV4050
      @TBV4050 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I lucked into finding the liveinst. Opened terminal to check uname -r and then was confused why the terminal was so chatty on first open.
      It's definitely tucked away, but with that said this is exactly what I was hoping for with a super minimal i3 fedora setup.

      Not to argue or anything, more just listing personal experience. The first thing I would have done was open a terminal.
      Just out of instinct really. Ctlr+Alt+T -> ls is the first thing I do on any new machine I'm on.
      They prolly should have set the terminal as an autostart if it's that important tho.

    • @AndersJackson
      @AndersJackson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@pako4555 more like wasting 8 minutes because there are not a 20-30 line of Readme.txt file shown on first login in live and/or installed Fedora.
      And autostart a terminal.
      That is basically the minimal one would expect the installation should start with.
      Minimal installation is fine, it definitivt have a place in the Fedora world. That isn't the problem.
      As comming from another minimal distribution, I need something to get started and understand the Fedora i3 disto.

Is someone to type "liveinst" or "liveinst and press enter". Any why can't they call it "liveinstall" the full word ? What value do they get by omitting 3 letters ???? Disk setup failed because it was automatically selected, so when you clicked on the disk the first time around, it deselected it. For the password you had to click done twice, because on the first click it gave a warning for the weak password, which you had to confirm with the second click. The placement of the warning at the bottom is unfortunate. Fedora is working on a revamped UI for Anaconda, though, which I'm excited for.

    I run Fedora with the Cinnamon desktop. Really the taskbar plus a few desktop icons (I know - looks a bit like Windows) works great for me. The workspace switcher actually is pretty cool, IMO. I don't have a standard keyboard with a Windows key, so that's a problem for me in Gnome. I started with Linux Mint but switched to Fedora because I am a developer, I just didn't like waiting for a long time for updates to the kernel, etc. Funny thing is I loved the graphical update program in Mint, but quickly came to like dnf and how it shows updates in the terminal. I don't miss the idea of a "software store" at all - it's just so easy to figure out what packages you need anyway by searching Google. Mostly Fedora has worked well for me, though after the 36 upgrade I had a few hard freezes. There were some updates and I'm waiting to see if I'll still have those.

    I think the only thing to possibly add is that the i3 spin is based on the XFCE spin. So configuration should work via XFCE settings apps and such, and you should also get Thunar and other XFCE-family applications out of the box. In theory (I haven't tried it) you should be able to open the XFCE settings app for wallpapers and make all your adjustments there.
    However I do share your sensibilities with TWMs - all respect due to the devs and people who love i3, but I find it clunky and unergonomic. Perhaps that's because I got heavily into XMonad back in the day and the autotiling experience is just so nice and easy by comparison. At least for me. I wish rather than an i3 spin it was more like a "tiling" spin with a few lightweight GUIs at or near install-time for selecting which tiler you want to use. I'm thinking something like gnome-initial-setup that runs when there are no user accounts, same thing - install, reboot, the initial-setup app runs and then you can pick i3, sway, awesome, XMonad, etc. Would be nice.

    I really wanted to try out fedora in virt-manager but somehow the installer works but is extremely slow, to the point where one click takes 5 minutes to do something, making it impossible to install. Interestingly i had the same issues even in the text based installer. Does anyone have a clue on how to fix it? Trying on vanilla Arch with qemu and virt-manager installed according to some Arch install guide. Pop-os works flawlessly so my setup does not seem to be completely messed up. Never seen any other installer than fedora act up like this before.

So, I tried to do the KDE spin of Fedora. I had problems installing, but finally got it to run. Maybe one time out of 3 or 4, it would give me an Anodai crash and idbus errors as soon as the DE loaded. I really expected Fedora's KDE spin to be just as flawless as their flagship. I was wrong and I am back on Arch this morning.

    • @Livity.
      @Livity. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same. I don't like Gnome, but I find it to be the most stable.
      The KDE install freezes but continues after parient waiting, in my tries. But still...
      There is a Fedora Everything package.
      It is a 670mb image. You'll download the distro during the boot install instead of the normal method (pre-made to USB).
      The target machine needs a lan connection.
      It comes with options to install any DE you want. You could install KDE from there. Although it's still Anaconda, this method seems more stable.
      Or you could use the Minimal install option which does not install a DE with Fedora. I'm sure as an Arch user, you'll know how to handle it from there afterward.
