      I respect your perspective. You convinced me to give Gnome serious consideration for the first time in a decade and I'm really enjoying it.
      I know you are toying with NixOS. To switch from KDE to Gnome I commented three lines in my configuration.nix, added two, rebuilt, and was presented with the gdm login prompt, no reboot. After login everything was as I left it so to speak. So fast and smooth. Sadly they don't have 45 yet, but 44 is damn cool to work with.

    Even if the improvements made in Gnome Software are small, I say that they are huge changes since they significantly improve the UX for less experienced users. It's features like this that Linux is desperately missing.

    • @avhiro

      Yeah, I'm no beginner but I still prefer them

    • @michaelutech4786
      @michaelutech4786 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agree! But what is this compulsive focus on "beginners" in Linux? It sounds as if we're still fighting Windows 95. Linux lost the Desktop war when it tried to convince people that it's "also" friendly and easy to learn. All that's needed to frustrate a Beginner is that Linux is "different". It has to be different to be worth to be there, so let's forget about beginners vs. "us" and just applaud when somebody does something that works well for US.
      I also do not agree that Linux is desperately missing much of anything. It seems to have too much. Just look how systemd streamlined Linux distro's. I'm an old school UNIX guy, so I really should hate systemd, and I do hate change. But now that we have it (it's still new to me), the word "Linux" has more meaning again. At the same time, it became less UNIX, but less diversity is worth it.
      I keep switching back and forth between Linux, Windows and Mac, having spend about 10 years with each of them. The last switch was from Mac to Linux and despite the fact that it was difficult to retrain my fingers and hands this time, I actually didn't miss anything, except perhaps that Mac uses CMD, so that I can use CTRL freely in the shell without having to muddle with key mappings. I don't know what people are talking about who say that Linux has a bad UX. It looks good overall, it's perfectly usable and even ergonomic, at least if you're willing to adapt your habits. There are some flaws and annoyances, but you find similar or worse on both Mac and Windows. Also, what does it mean when you say Linux and then ignore KDE and the 50 other UI paradigms?

    • @avhiro
      @avhiro ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@michaelutech4786 I agree with your point. For me, lack of proper third party app support and a standard dev sdk and package manager (across all distro) are my pain points with linux

    • @michaelutech4786
      @michaelutech4786 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@avhiro Yes, these are certainly a pita. But then again, if you develop for iOS, API's change so much from release to release that you have to keep writing major updates every two years on top of the usual maintenance work. How many different Windows UI frameworks are there which are still supported? How many are dead and people stick to them because a rewrite is too expensive?
      Software delivery for Linux is a catastrophe. But commercial software that comes as packaged native app is a rarity these days. For my use case at least, I barely notice the change from Mac to Linux other then some muscle memory that needs to fade with time. I'm actually utterly happy to be back to Linux and getting rid of all the corporate guidance I had to endure from Apple and before that from MS. Don't get me wrong, I liked to work on both Mac and Windows, but they have their own ways to annoy their users no less than Linuxes.

      There's a few reasons why.
      First, it doesn't matter that Ubuntu implemented it. Their method is rather hacky, for gtk3 apps they ship a separate theme for each color.
      Second, there was no Freedesktop portal for accent colors until very recently. That means that even if Gnome had accent colors, that accent color wouldn't be used in other toolkits because there was no standardized way of picking the accent color.
      Third, some Gnome folks are really ideological and just do not want them. There's also some concerns about contrast and accessibility. It takes work to pick colors that work well, aren't confusing, and that will always have good contrast.

    I may not always agree with the decisions the Gnome team makes, but I have to say, Gnome 45 looks good. At least on paper. I still can't wrap my head around their refusal to implement accent colors and full vrr support, like on basically any other OS. These are bog standard features for 2023, it's not 2010 anymore. Anyway, I still prefer Plasma on my desktop, I feel like it works better with either a mouse or a keyboard (Gnome really needs both at the same time on the desktop to be a smooth experience IMO) and the customizations are still endless. But with that said, I have switched to Gnome on my laptop (a 2020 Asus Zephyrus G14, running Garuda Linux) and it's been amazing, honestly. Even if nothing else was better than Plasma, how you can navigate the UI using the touchpad gestures feels so seamless and effortless and like the future, it's not even funny. Absolutely puts Windows to shame, and IMO even beats MacOS mostly (needs a bit of setup with extensions or Touche to do that though). I really, really want to try Gnome on a laptop with a proper touchpad (the one on mine kinda sucks, mostly 'cause it's small) and with a touchscreen. Something tells me Gnome on a touchscreen device will be brilliant.

  • @mirage809
    @mirage809 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Gnome 45 is looking great. No big sweeping changes here, but a lot of refinement here. The new activities button in particular is looking very slick and the new full height sidebar might just convince me to give putting the window button on the left hand side for once. I come from Windows, so having the buttons on the right is something I'm used to.
    The end of life warning is something I wish other app stores would start doing. I recently ran into an Android app that went EoL, which was frustrating.
    Seeing goof fractional scaling finally arrive in Gnome is making me happy. Now I'm hoping VRR support gets merged into Mutter soon. It's really coming together now.

But when I heard the reason why, it was people saying that it's too much like MacOS (as a gal that is currently stuck on a Mac... *god, I wish that was true* ) and it was generally just a complete misunderstanding of what it wanted to be, people, talking about it, being a touchscreen interface, and so on, when it never really was back then (ironically, it's now growing more and more into that). I've loved gnome for a long time, and I feel like it's finally getting the praises it deserves. And that makes me happy. I'll grant you this, it also helps that the team polished it a bit, especially performance, wise, it took a while to get there, especially in the GNOME 3 days, but still.
