You could also run it through a silica column after slight acidification. Practically all food colorings are retained, and the caffeine should move through.
One time I bought caffeine anhydrous powder and that was the closest I’ve ever been to caffeine poisoning. Headache, anxiety, and crazy heart palpitations. Stay safe.

It really depends on what but it usually entails a lot of google searching. For some things there are procedures online, but for other things I have to almost totally make it up.

Simply learning about it at college and performing a few extremely rushed labs are cool and all, but application obviously seems for one, more fun, and secondly, it gives a better understanding of reactions and how to actually use them.
