No beetle should be sitting around for 45 years, they’re meant to be driven. My 66 is my daily driver/work truck. Love the simplicity of the air cooled engine.
joe woodchuck The sleight downside of a 66, is that it’s a one off year, and some parts only fit the 66. I don’t know if I could find a 1300cc engine that came with that year. I don’t have the original transmission, I have a freeway flyer transmission, it’s very cool.
Take the frigging carb out and flter, clean them, take out old fuel out of the tank, install a temporary fuel tank with some gas and 2 stroke oil mix(loosening the dry rings) then start it !! Two "experts" who have no idea. After such a long service life, change the oil, change the plugs, replace the contacts, remove the ignition cable, remove the carburettor, clean the diaphragm and nozzles, check the fuel pump, replace if necessary. It is best to remove the engine, check valves and cylinder heads, if necessary, work on them, replace head gasket, additionally check clutch and replace if necessary. Everything else is nonsense, even if the engine should start someday.
I prefer the quickstart over neat fuel... Won't flood the engine. Trick is to keep spraying in small spurts while cranking and after starting until its running. But each to his own method.
@@baggieshorts1406 - By far for a car like this gasoline dribble is the way to go. Adding to that the detail that the tank has an access broad enough. My dad had a golf blue 59 beetle just like this one well into the 90s. He would buy my mom a new car every couple of years, but he kept his old bug until a guy offered him alot of money for it. I was just a teenager then and had no idea how valuable dad's old bug would be someday. I wish he would've kept it, I could be driving it today.

The first thing I learned working on VW’s, when tuning the carb with a screwdriver is don’t stick your pinky out like your drinking tea !!! That was back in the early 70’s and I had to have it sewn back on.
There are no changes for 1959 VW Bug, except for serial numbers. For 1958, the changes are: 1). Stronger fan belt, 2). Stronger reinforced frame, 3). Wider brake drum, 4). Larger rectangular rear window; windshield slightly enlarged, 5). Flatter accelerator pedal; formerly roller type, 6). Radio grille moved left a front of the driver, 7). Front turn signals moved a front of the fenders, and 8). "W" on the deck (engine) lid dropped.
My first car was a 59 in 1970. No gas gauge, just a stick with some lines. Needed rewiring, did it all in red. Had Oldsmobile rims welded on VW centers, 9.00x14 on the rear, 7.50x14 on the front. Only ran about 10 psi in the fronts or it would skate when you turned the steering wheel if there was 15 psi. Replaced it with a Mini Cooper 4 months later.
This 59 bug has the gas gauge in between the wiper and headlight knobs. That is not factory, it was an option that was installed by the dealer when the car was bought new. I’ve only seen a few bugs with it, including my 58 bug. 👍. Very cool. Check out my videos on my 58.
No, no, no to all the comments. I think they just got the car and want to try their luck by starting the engine and hearing it for any noises. Mechanics sometimes do that. They know it will eventually need a carb rebuild and will get to it. What I would say is they should look at the whole ignition circuit and if need be renew old, rusty wires, points, plugs etc. It will then fire up at first kick.
I don’t know if anyone noticed but this car has a gas gauge in between the headlight and wiper pull buttons. My 58 bug has the same thing. This gauge is not a factory item but was an option the dealer installed usually when the car was bought brand new. It’s a bit rare to see. Very nice car though.

There are no changes for the 1959 VW Bug, and everything was left for 1958, both body and mechanical changes. For 1959, VW Bug only Change is the model and serial numbers changes. If the buyer chosen to add on the aftermarket fender skirts on the 1958/59 VW Bug it look cool. I have seen aftermarket fender skirts on both 1958 and 1959 vintage VW Bugs with rear rectangular back light, since it was introduced in 1958.
Make sure you have a quality rubber seal between the engine and the body. If it's brittle and broken hot exhaust will enter the closed engine compartment. The fan will recirculate that hot air over the cylinders. Number 3 cylinder runs hot enough already!
In old cars, the fuel pump is mechanical. The engine must be running to pull fuel from the tank. On engines that are stalled for a long time, it takes time for the pump to start running at full capacity.
Adjust the valves. Rebuild the carburetor, and flush the fuel system and gas tank. Static time the distributor. And use a squirt can of gasoline and not starting fluid.

As sweet as my ‘66 Beetle!
I’m pleased they still exist and are in good hands! ❤️
Watching a vehicle as old as I am come back to life after not being driven since the last quarter of the last century, is quite amazing!!!
Despite the age, I personally love the style of the Volkswagen Bettle regardless what year it was made. And I love the sounds from them.
I live in Atlantic Canada and this was a treat to see a vehicle of that era still in one piece and tell what it is. Love it
