Perhaps the most heartbreaking thing about this show is that a good portion of the studio that made this anime lost their lives a firebombing attack on their studio by a madman.
As a studio, they are known for how fairly they treat their artists yet still producing the highest quality animations but the attack devastated their studio.

      IDK man..
Besides the fire incident, kyoani just producing some mediocre anime except for this violet evergarden.
They even kinda ruined Silent Voice movie btw.
Oh and also.. they better make more of nichijou anime.
Besides it's their most amazing anime, it's also much cheaper. Simplistic art. Except for the 3D effect scenes😅

Ah. I see you wanted to cry alot. Violet Evergarden is easily the most beautifully animated anime ever made. And I mean nothing else even comes close to the quality throughout. Not to mention how good the script is. and the music. Evan call did the OST for this show, and its magical. (he is also doing Frieren's OST's and did My Happy Marriage. the mans a genius). I always thought my husband was terrible with words. After he passed, my son spoke so briefly at his funeral, some guests were rudely whispering that the thought he was disrespecting his father. But what he said so true, I can’t imagine anything would have been better. It reminded me of the last gift he left me… it was a silly pun on my name but to my son, his father’s gifts where always a reminder of who he is and what he could be. Parents giving a birthday present of the flower she’s named after.. just after she requested they watch over her a little longer. “No matter how ugly you feel inside, remember you are our cherished flower and want to watch you grow. Remember who you are to us.”

Praise be to Akiko Takase, the supervising animation director for the series. When the series entered production, even her coworkers at KyoAni teased her that she wouldn't be able to maintain the level of detail in character design that she had done for the novels or the trailers, but she proved all of them wrong. Another shout out to Evan Call, the composer for the series whose music made every moment all the more impactful.
Make sure to watch the movie. The first one is simply a side-story, but the second one wraps up the main story.

Violet Evergarden does something that is VERY hard to do, and it does it WELL. What I'm talking about is the emotion "bittersweet" it's easy to make a story sad like it's easy to make one sweet, but making a story that hurts AND is sweet is a whole other level

I completely agree with you. And once you get halfway through the series, you KNOW that there a chance the next episode will make you cry. So you expect there to be sad scenes. But even if it is obvious what happens next like in episode 10, the way the story is written plus the visuals will make you cry anyways.

At the beginning of the story, we see Violet at a turning point in her life. Up until this point, she was a weapon of war, a super soldier, used by the military to win battles. Now that the war is over, Violet loses her purpose in life. And without Major Gilbert Bougainvillea and his orders, she doesn't know what to do. We see in episodes 8 and 9 how dependent she was on him, how he took her in, the 10 year old girl she was at the time, tried to save her from being used as a weapon, gave her a name, raised her, taught her to read and write and tried to make her see the beauty in life. At the young age of 25, he treated her like a human being, a child, which she was.
He wants to give her a future, a life without war, especially evident in the scene between him and Claudia Hodgins in the tent where he asked him to help Violet in case he died in battle. He became her adoptive father, although she clearly sees more in him. He is not only her father, he is her mother, her friend, her teacher, her mentor, her superior, her everything. He was the first person in her life who was kind to her.
But apart from the love Gilbert felt for his adopted daughter Violet, he also feels guilt and remorse. When Violet follows him onto the battlefield against his will for the first time, he hesitates to give orders. Watching her fight hurts him. We see him inspecting Violet's wounds when he wants to thank her for her actions on the battlefield and, due to remorse, he has to take a few steps to suppress this feeling. We see him unable to accept Violet's thanks to him as he buys the brooch at the market in Machtig and attaches it to her because he took her to the battlefield and used her as the weapon she was seen as by everyone else.
That she couldn't see herself as a human being with feelings, that she didn't question her current situation as a used weapon and bluntly followed Gilbert's orders and couldn't think about a time after the war, frustrated Gilbert, simply made him angry, but in the end blamed himself for not having shown her enough good, for still using her in the war. In the battle, in his last moments, he told her that he wanted her to live, that he loved her and showed that he was willing to sacrifice himself to protect her.
Violet is completely lost without Gilbert and only manages to keep on going through Hodgins' deception that Gilbert is alive. Taking Violet to Leiden to fulfill Gilbert's last wish and command shows the friendship and trust the two shared. In the course of the story, we also see how Hodgins becomes more and more protective of Violet, and is increasingly concerned about her well-being. The anime draws strong parallels here between Violet and Hodgin's wish for a child of his own, a daughter to be precise.
Violet arrives in Leiden and only manages to grasp a new goal after she hears the words "I love you" again in the post office, to find out their meaning, the meaning behind the last words of Gilbert to her. Over time, she manages to better understand the emotions of others and herself, as well as becoming more independent and following her feelings. She realizes the weight of her actions in the war and the importance of her work so she is able to carry on to make amends.
Nevertheless, the information that Gilbert is missing in action causes her world to collapse. Overcoming this pain and carrying on was a difficult experience for her. Ultimately, however, she has grown into her own person, matching her name. And even without orders to continue living with her own free will, she was able to prove herself as a human being even to Gilbert's brother Dietfried, who saw her as a weapon for the longest time and developed a huge fury towards her because he blamed her for his brother's death. The fact that in the two final episodes he is confronted with the fact that she is possibly human after all, as Gilbert saw it from the beginning and treated her accordingly, forces him to reconsider his behavior towards her. In the end, he has become the person who fights the hardest for a long happy life for Violet.
With this development, with all the experience Violet has gained, she can finally formulate an answer to Gilbert's last words to her. Nevertheless, Violet hopes that Gilbert is living a happy life somewhere far away, that he is still alive, although it seems unlikely. The anime manages to convey this feeling to the viewer to perfection. Since episode 1, Gilbert's disappearance and his unknown life status have been used to keep the attentive viewer speculating. In the last two episodes in particular, a hopeful viewer is repeatedly led to believe that he will show up now, but never does.
We feel exactly like Violet, unable to accept Gilbert's death, that he must live somewhere, that he will just spontaneously appear out of nowhere, but he never will as with many other characters before, be it opera singer Irma waiting for her lover, be it Leon waiting for his parents to return. In many shows, the element of a missing body is used to bring the character back at a later point in the story. Here it is used to give the viewer hope for the character's return.
Like Oscar, Anne and Maria, we are forced to accept the death of our loved one, to carry their love for us in our hearts and to live on and carry on. But without the certain confirmation that the loved one is really dead, we cannot, a typical phenomenon of missing persons in war, environmental disasters and tragedies.
The anime stands for me as a masterpiece in its exploration of loss, hope, love and the enduring spirit of humanity. It leaves us with a lingering sense of expectation for the return of a lost loved one, much like Violet's unwavering hope for the return of Major Gilbert. Thus, as the final frame fades away, we are left with the echo of Violet's hope reverberating in our hearts, a hope that transcends the confines of the screen and resonates with the universal longing for love and reunion.

Fun fact: The country name "Leidenschaftlich" means 'passionate' in German, and the capital's name "Leiden" means 'suffering'. As a German, I really appreciate the clever use of these words for this story, since it is exploring all the different forms of love and passionate feelings while showing that there is always suffering lying within as well ("Leiden-schaftlich"). And on the other hand, the capital "Leiden" is surrounded by the rest of the country "Leidenschaftlich", like the suffering that is shown in the series is always recontextrualized and framed by a much bigger feeling of love.
It is a beautiful show with gorgeous music and visuals and a brilliant story, and I really enjoyed watching your reaction to it :)

I really enjoyed this reaction and the inputs the two of you had when discussing the epsiodes! I watched it over a few days.
A few thoughts I'd like to share:
28:53 - "What's wrong?": My headcanon is that the way Violet was typing reminded Cattleya of a machine gun and asking her to type quietly was just a deflection. She seemed a bit panicked. Gilbertt telling her "you and me both" are also burning regarding his words to Violet gives weight to that, I feel.
3:34:23 - "Why is he calling him a hypocrite?": Gilbert's superior is pointing out that Gilbert's an officer. He's supposed to be used to sending teenaged boys to their deaths. In WW1 and 2, ostensibly, only boys above 17 years old could enlist, but recruiters often waived that requirement and boys as young as 12 (like Sidney Lewis) managed to make it to the front lines.

@2:01:47, in the Philippines, there is a gesture called a "mano" that is very similar to that. The younger person bows slightly and raises the elder's hand so that the back of the elder's hand presses against the younger person's forehead. This is something that one does for elders as a sign of asking for their blessing - be it upon entering a home, meeting them, etc.. One could (possibly) view it similarly to "kissing the ring" to show deference/respect to the one offering their hand. Though this is probably doesn't pull from that tradition, I wouldn't think that it's within proper etiquette that a princess does that gesture to someone of "low birth."
It just made me feel happy for a princess to show a court lady such respect.

    • @morlock2012
      @morlock2012 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a beautiful scene.
You're right, the power of the moment comes from the princess offering about the highest degree of respect she could to someone of such different social status. It's the reverse of the mano, in that aspect, where the respect goes to the elder. But the ingredients are much the same.
In a way, the formality of the gesture is more touching, since it's showing that Alberta has taught her well, compared to eg a very informal/outrageous hug.
It also seems to me the touching of the forehead symbolically treats the recipient as a parent (unlike kissing the ring, which I feel is more like respecting a job.)
I'm especially glad the scene has such relatable meaning to people from different traditions (even given this is a 'european' gesture in a Japanese medium)

26:28 Before it was animated, Violet Evergarden was a light novel written by Kana Akatsuki. There are a lot of missing plots from the original that delve more into Violet's origin that the producers of the anime decided not to put in. This is because KyoAni, wanted the anime to be more human and relatable to their audience. Gilbert's brother, Dietfried, is in the navy and during an enemy encounter, he and his crew were force to dock at an unknown island and that's where he found Violet, who seems to be about 10yrs old at the time. Dietfried had no idea why there was an orphaned child on a secluded island, so he decided to take her on board the ship out of pity, but things went south when his crew tried to make moves on Violet. Out of pure self-defense, Violet started killing the men that were handsy on her and started hunting each crew member one by one. Leaving Dietfried the last man standing. The novel also hinted that she had superhuman strength and she later fought with a giant battle axe called Witchcraft during her time in the war.
1:36 Violet in Japanese is 'Sumire' which the kanji character translate to "sincerity and love.' It's also a flower use to gift as a way to say 'thank-you.'

Damn, you know I've seen this show too many times when my first thoughts were "The music in this first scene seems off" and then they said something and I realized everything was pitch changed. Some oddly small details, the book that she's reading to Ann about the thief is the same book that she returns to Gilbert after she finishes it during the flashback where he's teaching her to read/write and speak. Also in the last episode up until after the air show she doesn't move her left arm because it's basically just an inert posable prosthetic until she can get it fully replaced.

2:27:05 - It was quite common in past wars that captured solders would be kept in POW camps(and before that as slaves) for years in extreme cases even decades until the two sides managed to exchange POWs or make a deal about handing them over(it was also common that POW died as captives and families never got a word about them)... so it isn't that out of the ordinary that it may take time for soldiers to get home even though the war ended months or years ago...

This anime is a very emotional inducing story for only 13 episodes. Though after the final episode, they have two more movies telling of her action afterwards. The first one will deal with the loose Gilbert story threads, and the second would be a look at a second/third generation perspective of violet impact on a former client.

"It's weird to me to start a show after a war" you say at the start. That's precisely why it needed a story like this. Because war isn't over when it ends. Peace is the ideal result of a war, but it doesn't heal your wounds, or undo trauma, or erase scars. Not all of them tied to the war, like the writer who lost his daughter to cancer. But you'll need people who understand, and you'll need to convey the feelings you feel even if it's hard to put to words. The scene that always gets me is her jumping the lake. She was invested in a children's story for the first time, and she pretty much jumps the lake out of childish innocence. For the first time she gets to be a dumb kid, and she overestimates what she can do and faiils miserably. And the animators felt that feeling and made it beautiful. They're the kinds of people who animate days passing with a man manually lighting the street lights, just to pass the time. Yet they'll rip your hearts out in some of these scenes. And even small details... Like Claudia keeping the 2 other plushies that Violet didn't pick on his desk. Really, check his desk, they're there. He wants Violet to have every option, no matter what.

Episode 11, Gilbert knew him to write (he taught Violet) so he wouldn't need a Doll, the point of the series us that at the time in history many people didn't know how to write - thus they hired Dolls to write for them.

For typewriters, if you make a mistake then you might be lucky and the document isn’t so important so you can use whiteout (or the correcting tape they have here in Japan) to correct the mistake. Then Violet goes on this journey to discover her own feelings and self worth, the main focus is the emotional aspect of humans, like our relationships with our loved ones and the inner turmoil the characters have. I really like the show cause it shows real life problems and situations.

This is crazy how this story is suddenly relevant now in my country. And it will only become more relevant once the war is over. For me in Russia frontline is kinda distant and I have a luxury of protection from being drafted. The moment it started I was doomscrolling like crazy. Now I don't do that but I still hear some stories. When you started talking about how solders of WW1 never wanted to kill each other and even talked with each other through the front line. It reminded me a story I've read recently. It's said there is randomly happened to exist a chat in a messenger where solders from the both sides talk with each other. And there they confirm they gonna kill each other in a fight. But they talk with no animosity. And then they proceed to ask each other what to loot from each other, you know, which belt kit is good and which night-vision goggles are shit and stuff like that. No hate. Just respectful "we're gonna kill you". "Same".

It's funny how they believe that Violet has a low EQ at first, and later on it turns out the only thing higher than her IQ is her EQ actually.
Also, the Anime omits a lot of lore, like Violet's more detailed past, her possible connection to Benedict, the details of her relationship with Gilbert, how Violet was found in the first place, and what her connection with Dietfried is, or just how deadly she was already as a child basically. The anime also added quite a few anime original characters, and altered other characters' past history.
Also, the typewriters. Though the anime takes place in an alternate universe Germany (The country and city names are a giveaway of that) the anime has its own alphabet which is shown on the typewriter keys. Someone already translated the alphabet somewhere online

Violet was a feral child living on a desert island. Early in the war, Naval Captain Dietfried Bougainvillea (Gilbert’s brother) was shipwrecked on her island. He decided to give her to his men to use as a camp whore. Violet disagreed, and slaughtered all of her attackers single-handedly and unarmed. Dietfried realized that she had left him alive because he was the only one who hadn’t tried to force himself on her. He found that she understood his language, and was fantastic at following and obeying orders, as long as the order was anything besides “open your legs.”
After Dietfried gifted Violet to him, Gilbert both trained and civilized her. Because the men under his command, despite his orders, kept trying to take her, Gilbert eventually had to move her into his own tent, as she kept killing every man who tried her mettle, and Gilbert was tired of losing more men to Violet than to the enemy. Even on the eve of the final battle of the war, there were still men in his unit who would try to force her, but Gilbert knew that the war would soon be over and he could take Violet away from that life, so he concentrated more on winning the battle than on discouraging men who refused to refrain from tempting fate.
