There's actually a reason why the native peoples of Peru are so short. The lack of oxygen takes less of a toll on shorter people as it is easier to oxygenate the body.
Please Louis read this! Im peruvian, from Lima. Whenever you go to cusco or puno or cities that are relly high in altitude you MUST take a pill called sorochipill. Altitude sickness is called soroche in peru, so that pill battles it. It is sold in almost any pharmacy and its safe and common product here. You also take gravol for nausea if needed, but sorochipill provides a little bit of help in that department too. Hope this helps in any way. For further reference you should start taking the pill 8h before the flight to the planned destination. If not you can take it once youre there. It will also work for Cusco as you have to climb in machu picchu and other activities. Thumbs up so he can read this! Good luck Louis! :)
When my wife moved to Colorado from Los Angeles she was 7 months pregnant. We moved from sea level to just over 9 thousand feet. I did fine but she was horribly sick for some time trying to adjust. It affects people differently. I have been to LaPaz, Bolivia which is much higher in elevation, one of the highest cities on earth and did just fine where others struggled. Hopefully you will be fine Louis. Enjoy and stay safe always. Respect from Castle Rock Colorado USA.
altitude sickness can start from 2500m amsl, and if you fly in to 3800m, you're almost certain to feel some effects - your body is working really hard to produce more red bloodcells, so you can process more oxygen, to compensate for the lower air pressure. I've been up at altitude a few times (ie summits of Aconcagua, Denali, Ama Dablam), I know what it feels like :-)
+NeverNotFlying Can you please do Delta or Westjet Boeing 757 or 737? P.S. I love your videos. Thank you and now I am more and more interested in planes because of you.
Raya is right. It doesn't matter what attitude you hit. If it's sudden, like with a plane, this is always gonna happen. The body needs time do get used to being deprived of oxygen and create more red blood cells.
Above 2500 meters altitude sickness can occur but more severe sickness occurs from 3600 meters. La Paz (Bolivia, 3650 m), Lhasa (China, 3650 m), and Cusco (Peru, 3400 m) is a few extreme cases.
Louis Peru is amazing , this is the only place in the world that has all the kinds of ecosystems, all divided in three regions . The coast , the mountains and the jungle . So there's a lot to explore. Every region of Peru has its own culture , different ways of living life . It's huge and beatiful . In consequence , It has a lot of food diversity . The food is amazing , top of the world , unique , delicious even if you dont like one there are a tons of choices . Peruvian food is starting to get known all over the world. Finally , I don't how long you will stay there , but I can only say that you got to explore as much as you can . And if this trip is not enough, you should come back .
I'm feeling "homesick" watching this 😭 I was lucky enough to call Peru my home for nine months last year and got to travel all around the country, I flew straight from Lima to Cusco on two occasions but only got altitude sickness the first time. I hope you go to Arequipa and Iquitos, my two favourite cities! I'm dying to go back and so gutted you didn't make the trip over while I was still there haha
I get altitude sickness but have learned how to make sure the affects are minimal. Suck on water at all times. I'm talking at least 2 bottles an hour for the first few hours. If you start getting headaches keep drinking but sugar drinks orange juice. I've never been above 14k for more than 8 hours so I can't speak for days that high above the sea.
I think we are quite a few days behind you but if you're still struggling with altitude sickness. Try 4-5 rounds of the Whim Hoff breathing method. I think it helped me when I got sick in Colca Canyon a few weeks ago.
This happened a few years ago in La Paz , Bolivia . I had dizziness, weakness throughout the body and difficulty breathing . I take Optalgin and it helped a little but trouble breathing remained throughout the stay and I moved to Peru . There are special balls heights but should take them several days before reaching such heights . Feel Good
You feel the lack of oxygen after crossing 10000ft and Juliaca,Peru is at 12500ft so you would definitely feel the lack of oxygen...After 8000ft it's better that you gain max 3000ft a day so a road trip is better option.... Flying from Lima at 5000ft to Juliaca, There is a serious chance of getting altitude sickness due to the massive change in altitude..... Last summer we went to Ladakh region of INDIA...at highest point we reached 18300ft ....Luckily we didn't feel the altitude sickness as we started our road trip at 6000ft and chose strategic stopovers so that we didn't gain altitude rapidly....What matter most is at what altitude you sleep, so plan your stopovers carefully and have rice for your meals, it Helps..Peace Out ✌️✌️
Salt Lake City Utah and Denver Colorado both have extremely high altitudes. I live in salt lake, so I've been used to it my whole life. But when I traveled to Denver for the first time I wasn't used to it at all. It was awful! Get feeling better soon!! All of you!
hi louis! so happy you are enjoying your trip, i´m from Peru :) I know you are vegan and finding places to eat in lima as a vegan can be a little hard, so here are a bunch of places you can go! : Armonica cafe, Quinoa, La balanza, La plazita miraflores, Sana, Punto organico, Oliva & Tomato, Raw Cafe Club, Bendito PAN, el pan de la chola.
We sometimes have tourists get altitude sickness in Park City but we're around 7,000 feet or around 2100 meters. Usually you drink a ton of water! Also if your sinuses are acting up because of it eucalyptus oil really helps too. Other then that you're already doing other things to help it along! Feel better!
I was in Cusco a few years ago and couldn't enjoy the town because I was always feeling grumpy, tired, out of breath, and sick to my stomach. Indeed coca leaves infusion did help a lot, but still altitude sickness is so annoying!
I live in boulder colorado which is 5-6 thousand meters and I usually get altitude sick or out of breath around 14 thousand feet. What I usually do is take some Tylenol or some other painkiller and then try to rest and drink lots of water and the sickness goes away after awhile.
I've visited Huaraz, Peru with a similar altitude. And got sick like you all did. The only thing that made feel better was the coca tea. It really works. Hope you are all feeling better and enjoy my beautiful country.
Lost my brother while he was in Argentina on his way up to the Anconcague, he was at a base camp over 5400m and was not able to make it back down in time. Altitude is dangerous especially when the lungs are effected as you don't get the typical headache and sickness as when the brain is effected, which makes you faster aware off it and to return to a lower height. But I guess you won't get into such extreme height and you have the oxygen spray which hopefully will be helpful enough until you lot have acclimatised. All the best and good fun at your adventure
I've just been travelling around Costa Rica so wasn't far away! We went up a few volcanoes in Costa Rica and it's crazy how the altitude makes the smallest of tasks so much harder. I've fallen behind with TH-cam so was so excited to catch up and see there was another Contiki trip! Oh yes!
Coca is not cocaine. In fact the coca leaf produce the same effect as caffeine. You guys are stupidly wrong about almost everything, start studying, watching videos everyday it's not helping you at all.
Having been to Peru, I can feel your altitude sickness. We started from Lima and ascended gradually on a span of 2 weeks. We spent the last days at 4000m above sea level, in Titicaca. I got the same result as if I would've had Gastro, so I basically emptied my stomach out. I was knocked out for 1 whole day, even if getting to 4000m was gradual. But hey, good luck! Peru's great!
When I went from Lima to Cusco I had mild altitude sickness too. It wasn't too bad, I just felt like sleeping and had a headache. After about a day I was fine. My mum got really ill and was bed bound for a few days but my Dad who is from Peru wasn't affected at all.
I travelled around the whole of Peru, but we slowly went higher and higher. So we went from Lima to (paracas, ica, nasca and then) Arequipa, then (after the colca canyon) Puno, Cuzco and Machu Picchu. I didn't experience any kind of sickness... I ate a lot of coca leaves and drank a lot of coca tea too
I've had altitude sickness several times, it is the worst feeling in the world. I lived in La Paz, Bolivia then, I think it's about 11 thousand feet or so. I always felt better after I got sick.
I visited Peru as I have family there I also visited Machu piccu and I suffered with altitude sickness from the second I got of plane I didn't feel but was still able to enjoy the incredible views. There isn't much you can do for it :/ have an amazing time !!!
I went to Peru and felt woozy at Cuzco, Macchu Picchu and I was pretty much acclimatised when I went to Lake Titti Kaka and the Coca leaves/ tea do help
Man! We are totally fans of this channel and also world travelers. We just left Puno on May 5th. Back when you were in Langkawi, we missed you by one day also. Dangit! One of these days we are going to fist bump you, Louie!
i got mild altitude sickness when i went to the summit of mauna kea on the big island, hawaii(14,000 feet). i was light headed and felt a bit dizzy. they warn you at the visitors center that getting sick could happen but i was in the mindset of, "it won't happen to me" haha i was wrong. i'd say i was up there for at least half an hour before leaving.
i traveled to peru last summer, hiked up to 5200meters and you could definitely feel the altitude! you can get the coco leaves as candy too which is pretty helpful :)
When I went to Peru, we flew from Lima to Arequipa, which was alright at 2400 m, but then, during our bus ride to Puno over the mountains we all felt it more and more, the whole thing ending in disaster when we had to stop at 4200 m for about an hour as one of the girls got really ill and needed oxygen - then of course, we all got sick from staying at 4200 for so long - still had a great time in Peru though!
Louis, the guys fron Contiki should have give you coca tea before flying to Puno because, the tea helps woth the high altitude sickness but, it takes time. Also after landing you need to rest for a couple of hours in order to help your body familiarize with the high. Good vlog and hope you are enjoying my beautiful country.
Hey! Just so you know ( probably never gonna watch this but it's worth to try) you do have fans in Peru, at least me. I've been wishing for you to come and see al Peru has to offer for the longest time ever. Hope you feel better and come back. Greetings!! 🤗 (Wish I had run into you while you were in Lima 🙈😔)
i went to colorado. first time ever. we stayed up in the mountains and i got hit with altitude sickness. i felt really dizzy. then the youth group i went with made us climb a 13,000 ft. mountain. didn't have any oxygen in me whatsoever. so scary but the view after was amazing.
Is there a camera that has one lense in the front and one in the back, like two sides camera? Because it'll make vloggers easier to shoot their face and then push a single switch button to the front camera so they can also shoot the views...

When I went to Cusco, Peru I got really bad altitude sickness and had to go to the hospital and we didn't speak any Spanish so my mom was struggling and try to call back home in Canada while I took a 4 hour nap
You can also chew the coca leaves, thats what people that live there do all the time. You were supposed to rest as soon as you got there and you cant eat much because de digestion is slower there. Thats what peruvians do when we go to the highlands 😁
my sister lived in a really high village in Peru for some months and she felt just like you described it in the video, she definately said mate de coca helped but one of her friends couldn't even walk without falling for weeks because of the height.
I got altitude sickness in Colorado..I seriously almost died, and it was awful. My advice is to drink the coca tea, and drink a lot a lot a lot of water!
You guys went from sea level to 12,800ft, 3900 meters all at once. Whew!! When I was 30, I drove to Denver, Co. Stayed there for 4 days. Drove to Colorado Springs, camped out at 8000ft for a night. Drove up Pikes Peak to 13,700ft till the road was closed from snow. Then RAN on foot, 3 miles, to 14350ft at the top. I guess I was fine because of the gradual climb over 6 - 7 days time.
I love all the characters that louis shows, just around town, its really cool how people of different cultures dress and function.
There's actually a reason why the native peoples of Peru are so short. The lack of oxygen takes less of a toll on shorter people as it is easier to oxygenate the body.
+Tyler Gray I was thinking that, no wonder our 7 foot palm tree is having trouble...

Good luck to your husband! 👍
Heard several Climbers died on Everest recently, including a girl who was a vegetarian.

Nothing better than 2 FunForLouis Vlogs In One Day.
its so funny the way Louis tells us that stat and then literally films every woman he walks past..😂😂
I honestly thought that guy with the oxygen was offering you drugs
and I was right.

Oh man seriously?! That's rough!! Hope you enjoyed Utah other than the puking though ;)
Absolutely LOVING these Perú vlogs! Hope y'all are having fun!
Favourite quote from this vlog
"I just breathed some oxygen"
I'm in Cusco today, and feeling the affects. Louis vlog teached me a lot about what to expect in Peru.

Aha! That would make for some very weird and creative vlogs!

9:00 "Ohh yeah, it does taste a little bit like cocain!" got me! :'D Nice one
Are you going to Cusco? You really shouldn't miss Machu Picchu !
Dang I really miss Peru. I really do. I MISS IT SO BAD.
I went from kathmandu to everest base camp at the age of ten and altitude sickness was a struggle. Feeling lethargic and physically drained constantly
I visited Peru as I have family there I also visited Machu piccu and I suffered with altitude sickness from the second I got of plane I didn't feel but was still able to enjoy the incredible views. There isn't much you can do for it :/
have an amazing time !!!
Anyone know the song playing at 1:06? He has the artists linked in the description but I've been searching all the tracks and no luck...
It sounds like the ind of feeling you get when you jump in the snow after a sauna! That's cool, loving your vlogs
I went to Peru and felt woozy at Cuzco, Macchu Picchu and I was pretty much acclimatised when I went to Lake Titti Kaka and the Coca leaves/ tea do help

Louis, why are you still buying fur? :(
+gabyenbsas recent vlog!
+Jessica Ⓥ Bloody vegans...
***** you can only murder another human being. As much as i'd love to wear a skin suit and eat human thighs my meat habit is not murder.
+jim broadbent my comment does not affect you. Move along.
+Jessica Ⓥ if you are talking about the coat he bought in Iceland then don't worry, that was faux fur.
There was a time when Louis looked like he was traveling like it was a job but now his vlogs have been more entertaining!!
I also get Soroche walking in mountains around La Paz ! Strange feeling !
i want to meet you Louis!!! when you come back to Lima????
7:10 Louis must've loved feeling himself.. Sorry I had to xD 😂 😂
In Leh which is in the northern part of India u do feel altitude sickness if ur new to that terrain
You can definitely get altitude sickness here in Flagstaff, Arizona. We are 7000ft above sea level (about 2134m).
i went to colorado. first time ever. we stayed up in the mountains and i got hit with altitude sickness. i felt really dizzy. then the youth group i went with made us climb a 13,000 ft. mountain. didn't have any oxygen in me whatsoever. so scary but the view after was amazing.
I'm going to Peru and Bolivia in August... Don't know what to expect about altitude, it scares me
Aww I love Evan! I'm excited for his vlog on this day :)
Felt a little bit out of breath just watching this. Hope you guys feel better soon
Please come to Birmingham!!!!!! I really want to meet you!!!
leh ladakh which is in India is 5,753 m altitude from sea level and it's very beautiful place u should come there I can guide u
You should watch the "Departures" episode in Peru where Justin Lukach gets altitude sickness. Not fun at all.
Departures was my favourite show!
Is there a camera that has one lense in the front and one in the back, like two sides camera? Because it'll make vloggers easier to shoot their face and then push a single switch button to the front camera so they can also shoot the views...
+Shara Some android camera's can do this
TheLegend500 I mean like professional camera
I had it really bad in Ecuador but altitude sickeness works in really different ways every time. You can be fine at 4000m one time and go up again and feel awful the next. Very strange.
When I was in Peru last year we were driving to colca canyon and we went through a section that was at 4900metres. I am quite glad I didn't get any altitude sickness
This upload rate is the greatest, keep it up Louis.
I am going to Peru in a few weeks and after seeing this vlog I talked to my doctor and he actually has some sort medicine I can take to prevent altitude sickness so hopefully I won't experience too many symptoms...
Louis accent gets me every time, love to hear him speak :)
1:12 she was straight up chilling' with that bag of crisps.
Had the same experience at 6:18 with a bong many years ago :-)
I wish I was with you guys...it looks like fun!
It happened to my husband in Bogota, Colombia. He was raised in Florida so the altitude hit him hard!
I love in Denver, CO and I have got altitude sickness in woodland park Colorado at 9500 feet of elevation.
When I went to Cusco, Peru I got really bad altitude sickness and had to go to the hospital and we didn't speak any Spanish so my mom was struggling and try to call back home in Canada while I took a 4 hour nap
What program do you use to edit your videos? And specialy the intro with the paper flyer?
You can also chew the coca leaves, thats what people that live there do all the time. You were supposed to rest as soon as you got there and you cant eat much because de digestion is slower there. Thats what peruvians do when we go to the highlands 😁
Aspen, Colorado can affect people. There are lots of oxygen bars around town.
Didn't know you guys were there.. I am going to Peru next week to see Machu Picchu too :)
In Cusco you will also feel that way actually! So hopefully you get used to the altitude quickly and drink a lot of " Mate / coca tea "
Pro tip: never have coca tea before any drug test because coca tea shows up as having used cocaine.

my sister lived in a really high village in Peru for some months and she felt just like you described it in the video, she definately said mate de coca helped but one of her friends couldn't even walk without falling for weeks because of the height.
I got altitude sickness in Colorado..I seriously almost died, and it was awful. My advice is to drink the coca tea, and drink a lot a lot a lot of water!
go fur-free louis
You guys went from sea level to 12,800ft, 3900 meters all at once. Whew!! When I was 30, I drove to Denver, Co. Stayed there for 4 days. Drove to Colorado Springs, camped out at 8000ft for a night. Drove up Pikes Peak to 13,700ft till the road was closed from snow. Then RAN on foot, 3 miles, to 14350ft at the top. I guess I was fine because of the gradual climb over 6 - 7 days time.
louis at 6:38 that feeling is what weed feels like (at least for me)
