I am delighted to have the Shihan answer my question. I do not know if the translation is auto generated, some of it is unfortunately incomprehensible. What I gathered, after watching the video several times, is that the rigid structure necessary for the transfer of energy from the Center of Gravity (COG) to the target is achieved by a wrist turn (here referred to as "torque). Hence there is no slowing down and no losing acceleration due to a "kime" type arm and fist tension. The firm arm structure is achieved through the correct alignment and final wrist twist, not through muscular tension. If anyone here speaks Japanese, please comment if I understood the video correctly.

As I understand it, The tip of a whipped towel becomes rigid enough to cut a person without the need of a muscle in the towel to clench. The position of the wrist and hand are loosely guided so that they accelerate and snap into place without squeezing the muscles of the forearm. The mass of the bones in the arm become smaller as they reach the outer limit of extension, just like the wet towel becomes smaller as it as it comes to a corner. This facilitates the whipping effect. If positioned and guided correctly the punch itself causes the solid structure in the hand at the end of the punch. The structure is created simply by the fact that the arm reaches the end of its length. You just have to guide the wrist and hand so that the stopping energy can be gathered into the desired point. The benefits of this other than the speed is that fact that the shorter the period of time the hand and wrist are contracted the greater force can be transferred to the target. The wrist turn is just one way to guide this whipping effect into the desired track. Easier said than done.

We do not use towels, even wet ones, as a walking stick, because you cannot lean on a towel. This type of punch (as in the video) will be an arm punch, using the weight of the arm, not the whole body. A fast punch for sure, but of very limited energy. Boxers are told to become like stone at the end of the punch, it slows down, but speed is not everything, featherweights hit faster than heavyweights, but their punches are much weaker. Funakoshi must have realized that, when he introduced kime, but for sports karate it only slows down. A powerful punch must create a structure you can rest your body on, just like during a pushup, you cannot do a pushup on a relaxed arm . Arakaki's divine speed punches look fast, but weak, never saw anyone break boards or bricks with this type of punch. May be I am wrong, but in his book he initially advocated whip like arm action plus body fall forward (as in Jack Dampsy's trigger step) never explaining how a whiplike arm can create a structure solid enough to support bodyweight without collapsing. This video is supposed to be an answer, but he does not talk at all about the connection between the fist and the hora, the COG, never talks about the necessity of a bridge between the fist and the COG and how a relaxed arm can be such a bridge, only that tensing slows you down. He talks about penetration, yes a towel can penetrate some, but compare being hit by a wet towel, even fast, and being pocked by a rigid stick, with body weight behind it, even slow. I'd rather be hit by a towel, than pocked by a stick thrust. Most weapons are not flexible, but rigid, and for a good reason.@@vincentcobb1037

You can never get a convincing answer from Arakaki. It's because most of his theories are completly nonsense and I think he knows it. I hope you know what I mean.

@@rheni8419 @Rheni He does fallow the old okinawan concept of "dead tree"-increase the striking power through a controlled fall forward. It has been used in the past by western pugilism and the Chinese art of xing yi. But he tries to combine it with a whipping arm that would collapse at the wrist and/or elbow without muscular support. Yes ,tensing the muscles slows you down, he is right, but you cannot transfer the bodyweight momentum unless the arm can withstand the target recoil-for every action there is an equal opposite reaction. I do not see a makiwara in his dojo and you just do not get that good a feedback on a punching bag, though even though the arm may bent by striking such a bag as well. His American students almost never comment on his videos or his FB posts and neither does Shihan Arakaki himself. Hope to catch up with him in Utah some day and keep watching the vids!

I guess you learned from Yamashiro Yoshitomo sensei. He teaches tightening the fist makes COG transfer to the target and connects the arm with the torso. But his style Tomari-te is descended from the new-school Naha-te such as Uechi-ryu and Gojyu-ryu (Taht’s why they do Seisan like Sanchin). So, there is a little bit difference in the way of Tsuki from Arakaki sensei(His style is Shuri-te).
To make penetration,it’s necessary to make the arm rigid. But Kime or putting strength into the arm makes Tsuki slow. So,Arakaki sensei says they use “torque”. It is archived not by turning the fist at the time of impact, but twisting it in the process of Tsuki like squeezing a wet rag (6:54 and 7:18). This enables Tsuki to have both the speed and rigidness.
He doesn’t use “torque” to transfer the COG to the target. Because ,even without “torque”, if the correct posture(Nihanchi or Kiba dachi) is made, moving the arm can transfer the COG. And,to transfer the COG more powefuly, he uses “dead-tree”method (=倒木法). You can learn it from his other videos.
This is my summary and translation. So,there may be misunderstanding or mistranslation. Then this is just for your reference, may not be what he actually says.
