    When I saw four languages instead of fifteen in the title I finally believed that someone can actually speak these four languages and not only say 1-2 sentences and claim to speak certain language fluently lol

      I take speaking four langugaes at a decent level over speaking only some bits in 15 languages.

      @@samykiani944 I guess it depends why you're learning languages. For some poeple it might be more valuable to know how to say "hello" in every languages in the world rather than being fluent in a few languages.

    It is so interesting how one’s personality “changes” after switching languages. You’re very cute in Italian. Your French is also good. You sound also good in Portuguese. I would believe if you told me you were born in Lisbon (Brazilian Portuguese is my native language). I’m learning Hebrew and Croatian now.

    • @EmilyStoker
      @EmilyStoker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Thanks! Yes - this is such an interesting point about how your personality changes! It never changes completely, but I'm far more likely to act a certain way through the things I say in some languages over others - of course I notice it most in Italian. For me I think it has something to do with the main person/circumstances you learn the language in :) Wow! what an interesting mix of languages - good luck!

      Thanks Quinn! That's really kind. Yes, once you start to learn romance languages, if you can get your head around the pronunciation of another one, it means you can really start to understand it! I'm sure you'd have very little trouble picking up Italian - the only annoying thing is getting words/grammatical structures mixed up. Keep practising your languages, and you're right: it's a great way to learn about different cultures! :)

    • @PierreMiniggio
      @PierreMiniggio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you know one of the romance languages, when reading you can guess a lot of what is said in any of the other romance languages, because the grammar is very similar.

    • @PierreMiniggio
      @PierreMiniggio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tishigtuoi That's because us native speakers contract words more often than you'd hear in english for example, and we use a lot of slang that isn't taught when you're learning the language.
      Like idk if you ever heard of "verlan", but that's used daily, especially by the younger generations. And verlan is quite a challenging concept you guys will have to wrap your head around to be able to recognize the words that are said and figure out if the "verlan" 'ed words has the same meaning as the original one (and for the most part, they do), or if they don't. It's so engrained in the language now that I think it should be taught a lot earlier to french learners.

      I think that mostly depends on how similar the languages are.
      I'm currently learning chinese through english, and I won't see how I could mistake english and chinese since they're completly different languages.
      I also plan to learn italian through spanish (in fact I already started and spent a few hours on this, but might as well consider it at not started yet since it's just the begining and chinese takes priority atm). And I can see how I'd confuse the 2, since the basic grammar of these 2 languages is mostly the same.

    I have so many things to say about this video that I don't even know if you'll have the patience to read everything. lol
    But let's do it anyway!
    1) I really loved your video. I always enjoy watching videos of polyglots and how they are able to just "switch" from one language to another. I am not one of them so I needed to read the subtitles to understand what you were saying, but you sounded so natural in all of the languages you spoke. Maybe you have some accent and a native can notice right off the bat but I don't see any reason to people make any kind of fun of you because of it. I bet that most of them don't know how to speak four languages. It's really impressive.
    2) I am a native Portuguese speaker, but I'm from Brazil, which makes your accent really different than mine. Nevertheless, I was perfectly able to understand everything you've said in Portuguese. Which means that you don't have a "heavy" accent. It's funny because I met some Portuguese people who I couldn't be able to understand a single word they were saying (crazy, isn't? The same language but because of the speed and the accent that were really heavy I needed to ask for them to repeat exhaustively). In your video, though, I was perfectly able to understand you!
    3) I don't speak English fluently (yet), but I'm at a pretty advanced level. However, I usually have some difficulty to understand the English/British accent because I'm way more used to the American accent. But, again, in your video, I understood everything you said in English without any subtitles. Your speech is just so clear that it makes easy to understand.
    4) You are so inspirational because as a native Portuguese speaker I feel that languages like Spanish and Italian are not that hard for me to understand. I say that because there were some parts where you were speaking in Italian and I could understand even without subtitles. This makes me want to learn those languages, you know? And, I might be wrong, but I kinda feel that sooner or later Spanish is going to be the next one for you! hahaha
    Which leads me to one question: as a polyglot do you think it's better to learn a language and master it before learning another one? I really wanted to learn Spanish, French and Italian but I don't feel that I should try it until I really master English (which is my priority at the moment).
    *I promise I'm finishing*
    I don't know if you are interested, but I recently posted on my channel my first video speaking in English. It would make me really happy to see some feedback coming from you. That's all! I apologize for that unfinishable comment! hahaha

    • @EmilyStoker
      @EmilyStoker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rafael, thank you for taking the time to leave such a long comment! I promise I appreciate it and read it all :)
      This is true - when I was teased about my languages I did not speak 4, but these are perhaps the little bad memories I can really start to let go of now ;)
      And I know what you mean about Brazilian and European Portuguese. My boyfriend has Brazilian friends who had real trouble understanding his Porto accent when they first met. I'm still a beginner in Portuguese, but I'm learning so much about the huge changes in accent and even grammar between the two versions of the language.
      Yes - I think once you learn one romance language (particularly if you are a native) it's going to help you so much in learning another one, to the point where you can even understand the language at times without having ever learned it! THat's why I'm progressing the way I am with Portuguese with relatively little effort I would say :P and yes - I'm fairly certain Spanish will feature somewhere down the road for me, too!
      To answer your question, I think it really depends. Getting to 80% fluency is the hardest, and you're going to put in just as much effort, if not more, to reach that final 20%, so I would really recommend not obsessing over it, and it's fine to pick up a new language at this point. Especially since from your written English, you sound VERY proficient to me.
      And yes - I will check out your video and leave you a comment! :D Thanks again, and have a great day :)

      Muito obrigado pelo seu feedback, Emily. Não só por aqui, mas também no meu vídeo. Estou te respondendo desta vez em português que é para ajudar um pouquinho a praticar seus hábitos de leitura (não que você precise, mas é sempre bom).
      É engraçado que encontrei seu vídeo por acaso, mas já me tornei fã graças a ele. Espero, sinceramente, acompanhar cada vez mais seu progresso no português em vídeos futuros, mas também aprender um pouquinho das demais línguas e das culturas dos países que você visita. Espero um dia poder ter o privilégio de conhecer a Europa, mas enquanto isso não é possível você o faz por mim! :)
      Ah, e talvez isso possa soar muito "íntimo" pra você, mas brasileiros costumam se despedir com mensagens de afeto. Por isso, beijos! :)

    I studied 4 years of Russian and 2 years of ancient Gree k, but it has been some 20 years since then. I have been studying German, Spanish, and French on my own now. I started the Summer Language Club with my grandchildren, and we are having a great time on Zoom. We started this by having Russian tea every week. That was mostly culture. I am hoping to do more language with them.

    I've been teaching myself Portuguese recently and always search polyglot on youtube when I need inspiration. When i was watching I thought, hang on I recognise this woman... then the penny dropped. We were in a school play when i was like 13/14 and you were in sixth form i think? I’m a native french speaker, your french is really good, of course the pronounciation could be better but there are almost no grammar mistakes which is quite tough in french (even for us lmao)
    I learned english mostly by myself (at school it helped a bit as well but mostly from the internet), I also learned german for 12 years at school (but somehow I still can’t make a sentence fluently), and finally italian by myself as well (tho it could be improved by far)
    I’m now learning swedish because I’ll be going there on holiday, and Finnish because I find it nice.
    Would love to learn more languages like portugese, dutch (mostly for flemish in belgium), maybye a slavic language too but I don’t have time for all that x)

      Emily Stoker Maybe you can make videos about how you learn languages bc to some people, especially those raised in monolingual countries, it’s an alien concept.
      Like the process you take, the grammar + exercise books you recommend, tips to practice your accent (even if that’s just a 2 min vid), how you learn + remember vocabulary, how you get your head around tricky sentence formations or certain verbs, ermm reccomendations on books/music/films/podcasts/ in x language. I’d love to see things like that :-).

    • @Samchocolate11
      @Samchocolate11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emily Stoker ooh also random question but do you find that you can now access insider knowledge about certain cultures due to knowing the language?
      For an example, i’d like to learn Italian to be able to read Italian cookbooks & food blogs to learn how to cook Italian meals from natives/from the source. If I learnt Italian fluently from a young age, I would have liked to gone to an Italian university to study Italian architecture as I’m absolutely in love with Italian + classical architecture.

    • @EmilyStoker
      @EmilyStoker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely get "insider knowledge" on a culture when you can communicate with the people in their mother tongue! It's often the little details in a culture that someone from the country might not even think to tell you, because they don't realise how specific it is to their culture, that you pick up on from speaking to people! I learned more about Italian cooking from watching and helping my Italian friends cook than I did from reading books/watching TH-cam videos about it :)

    Eu sou também poliglota, mas em muitos casos não foi por ter aprendido na escola (simplesmente porque nasci numa cultura diferente).
    Consigo falar português (nativo), galego (mais ou menos, mas não necessitam, já que eles entendem perfeitamente o português e eu também os entendo), espanhol (nunca estudei, mas sou fluente), francês (um pouco, mas consigo o básico) e inglês (como é óbvio, é a língua franca).
    Continua com os estudos! O teu português está fantástico. Qualquer dia falas como uma nortenha! :)

    Sentire la qualità della tua pronuncia (per una madrelingua inglese è molto difficile) è impressionante, oltretutto dopo soli 5 anni di studio, immagino non tutti vissuti in Italia, sei veramente brava; conosco moltissimi americani e inglesi che vivono in Italia da anni, gente che lo comprende alla perfezione e riesce a parlarlo (relativamente) bene, che non si avvicina minimamente alla tua pronuncia, complimenti.

  • @alexcortot
    @alexcortot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was a very delightful talk. You seem to be a very sympathetic person with a communicative enthusiasm for multilingualism. Keep on the good work for at only 24 you have a fairly good command of the three languages you chose to take on. Others will follow I guess. Multilingualism is a never ending path and your are on good tracks. People laughing at foreign accents, along with those telling you that you are "lucky" to be a multilingual person (regardless of the years of commitment it takes to achieve such a goal) can sometimes grind you down. But you should not not pay so much attention to them. To the contrary your accent should let people remember how hard one has to work to be able to express oneself in a foreign language.
    Ecouter ce qui pour toi a été le "déclic" vers l'envie d'apprendre des langues m'a particulièrement touché car j'ai eu une expérience assez similaire. A onze ans mes parents se sont installés en Côte d'Ivoire et je me suis retrouvé en contact quotidien à l'école avec des enfants parlant certes le français mes aussi d'autres langues que je ne comprenais pas (le baoulé, le bété, certains l'arabe aussi etc...). Cela me donnait souvent l'impression frustrante d'être un peu stupide. Je décidai alors de ne pas rater l'occasion d'apprendre sérieusement les langues au cours de ma scolarité. Ce furent d'abord l'anglais et l'espagnol, que je parle couramment, et le russe, langue assez difficile mais dans laquelle je peux avoir des conversations basiques.
    Avevo 24 anni cuando ho iniziato imparare il giapponese dopo di avere incontrato mia moglie in Francia. E la lingua giapponesa che mi ha fatto davvero attraversare la soglia del multilingualismo. Adesso 42, vivo nel questo paese e ovvio, a forza di praticarlo tutta la giornata, il giapponese è diventato la mia seconda lingua. Ma davvero, potere parlare almeno 4 lingue falicilita molto l'aprendimento di lingue suplementari. Pertanto ho iniziato studiare da solo l'italiano (non molto difficile se gia capisci il francese e lo spagnolo), il tedesco (e le sue declinazioni adjectivali tanto problematichi!) e piu recentemente l'olandese. Lavoro in un centro d'informazioni turistiche, una posizione che mi permette praticare tutte le mie lingue nel quotidiano. E realmente una grande opportunita per gente come noi. Bruxelles è una città molto internazionale e spero che vivere qua ti aiutèra anche a trovare delle opportunità similari. E spero ovviamente che l'esito della crisi in Gran Bretagna non ti impedisca di continuare a vivere i lavorare in Europa.
    Mais, entendo, leio e falo tambêm um pouco de português mesmo que tenha menos experiênça pratica. Acho que você fala melhor que eu. Talvez as proximidades linguisticas do Italiano e do Espanhol incomodam um pouco. Mas por algumas razoes profissionais, preciso continuar de melhorar meu nivel. O prefeito da cidade onde fico esta procurando desenvolver relaçoes culturais con Portugal e è muito possivel que algum dia eu tenha de fazer o interpreta. Por as mesmas raçoes trato de aprender as linguas dos paises vizinhos do Japao como o chineso ou o coreano.
    Foi muito interessante de ouvir você. Muito obrigado e mais outra vez, Parabens !

    My story because you asked for it:
    I am a native Dutch speaker. It's my mother tongue and I don't think I will ever lose it. My dialect, Limburgish, is also sort of a language of it's own. We will put it between brackets for now, because it's not an official language. Next, as you can read, I'm fluent in English. I realised that not speaking English in a connected world is like gonna make my life impossible, so I practiced and practiced and practiced. Because I live at the border with Germany, I had German classes for 4 years. My listening is very good, my speaking is okay and my writing needs some practice (especially German grammar, help!). Since November, I've been practicing Spanish. It's the world's 2nd language after Mandarin Chinese, and not many people realise that. I am internationally minded and I NEED myself to know Spanish for Latin/South American countries.
    Side note: I am 17, so I hope to learn 1-2 more languages

    Emily, you have a great talent, really you do! Amazing! Not to detract from you incredible skill but I would love to see you venture out of your Latin comfort zone and have a go at some languages from outside that group to find your true potential.

    Liked the video very much. I'm not so much into language learning myself, but I find that these polyglot videos definitely deepen my understanding of etymology of the languages I know, which is great. As an ex musician I was even more fascinated by the timbre of your voice. Has anyone ever told you you would make a fine singer? I think you might. If I'm not badly mistaken, your voice type may be what is called dramatic soprano.

    Hello Emily. This video is awesome. :) I really enjoy listening to your italian accent as well.. :) I'm an audio engineer and I noticed that when you are speaking there is a natural click at times when you speak. It is very hard to explain but maybe someone with better audio skills can help me explain this concept much better. But either way, it is super cool and your voice is very relaxing as well. I'd love to hear an update video as well. Also I love your articluation as well.

    Hey! Just came across your channel because I want to travel or even move abroad whenever it's possible again. Obviously I also like languages and would like to practice them again!
    My mother tongue is French so it is kind of a blessing because I do not have to go through the hassle of learning it 😅
    I also speak English, although German was my first foreign language at school. My 3rd foreign language was Spanish, which I also learned at school. Then I took Italian at the university but I only stayed there for about three weeks before leaving studies altogether. Fast forward to 2 years later I restarted learning Italian online and I also had an impromptu 3.5-month stay in Lisbon last year which allowed me not only to discover Portuguese, but also to practice my other languages on a regular basis in language exchanges (You may know the place called Anjos70?)
    I remember at first it was truly difficult to switch between Italian, Portuguese and Spanish but I eventually got used to it. Obviously I still sometimes get mixed up but I am eager to go back to Portugal because I miss it... And Italy is a strong contestant!
